  • 1994 California Regionals at the newly built Pond Arena where the San Jose Sharks (Pro Hockey Team) play. This was a great high school game that featured Kris Johnson, Shea Cotton and Miles Simon. This would be the 2nd consecutive year that we played Mater Dei. They were ranked higher than use as we took two losses in a row in South Carolina (Myrtle Beach Ball Classic) with one of them coming from Simon Gratz, the former school of my NBA championship (Detroit Pistons) teammate Rasheed Wallace. Kris, Miles and I all signed with Pac-10 schools; UCLA, CAL, and Arizona. This game featured two legendary coaches in Willie West and Gary McKnight.

We use to workout together in Sacramento after our collegiate days because we had the same agent and we always touched upon the point!! Jesuit had the the height just like us and good team chemistry. That is why we played them back to back years in the State Championship!! They deserve a lot of credit as well. Both Isaac and Chris from those jesuit teams are my guys! Love them dudes!!

    It was a struggle for Mater Dei once Shea Cotton fouled out. I remember sitting in the stands and telling my brother they just lost their inside muscle. Bad officiating with that flop by Johnson. But Mater Dei couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat in the 4th quarter, with huge turnovers.

    • @Trefeezy
      @Trefeezy  2 года назад +1

      Yep it’s some truth to what you said! It was the same situation the previous year but Miles missed his free throw so with us you have to be finish the game til the buzzer sounds with a lil bit of luck as well lol but two years Of city and state titles isn’t what I would call luck!!🤷🏿‍♂️…BUT MATER DEI BEST TEAM I PLAYED IN HS HANDS DOWN!!!!’

      @@Trefeezy Oh yea for sure. I remember being in 11th grade at this time and saw the rawness in Cotton’s game and thought he was a sure fire lock to play and star at a major college program. To bad it didn’t work out for him.

    reminds me, Crenshaw hasn't won a state title in boys basketball in a quarter century, not since 1997, they used to be a beast back in the day, their program is the closest that any CA Boys Basketball program has come towards the success MD has done in boys basketball under McKnight. They also went nearly 20 years without winning a CIF section title in boys basketball, until they won back 2 back CIF section titles in 2016 and 2017, in total they have won 8 State titles and 18 CIF section titles, 16 they won under long-time former HC Willie West.
    Many people say MD under McKnight, ruined Crenshaw, Crenshaw doesn't attract or lured talented basketball athletes as much as they used to.
    Also, while McKnight is still at MD, MD is currently going through the longest state title drought in the McKnight era, they haven't won a state title since 2014, and MD is nowhere as consistent as they used to be when it comes to winning CIF section titles either, which they haven't done since 2018, it reminds me, in the first 25 years of McKnights HC at MD, MD never went more than 2 years without winning a CIF section title.

    • @Trefeezy
      @Trefeezy  Год назад +2

      Yes City and CIF at its best with the players and coaches. Both West and McKnight are Hall of Fame coaches. City basketball has changed period! Parents are sending there kids outside the city to sierra canyon etc..it’s safer and financially upholds any city school. It’s going to take some major funding for talent to stay in the hood.
      Gary is a great coach but I never lost to him so it’s hard to think coach west retired because of him. It took coach Azzam from westchester hs and coach McKnight many years to past coach west, he had been retired by the time those coaches pasted him up on titles and wins. I think hs city basketball will regain its rep in due time.

      From Oakland; the Shaw won state titles 1983, 85, 86, (88 #1 in nation and lost scif finals ), 89, 93, 94,97. I am missing one year. It was not that he won over a long period of time. He had the greatest peak ever!!! 7-15 years and in 1988 could have easily won.
