Kids should never be corrected in public if possible. It’s embarrassing and should be private. Take this constructively. If you publicize reprimands it can lead to lying and can hurt your respect bond. You wouldn’t do that to your wife.

@@IlainaM as I’m a woman and not a lesbian I wouldn’t have a wife. And no, I think it’s good to show acceptable discipline to normalize a healthy way of correcting kids. Calling out a player on a football team that’s not giving his all will hold him more accountable because his teams eyes are on him. We have far too many parents scared to discipline children because of ridiculous backlash like the asinine comment left by you. If you want scripted and by an agenda life, go watch reality tv. Eli, everyone screws up. When I was 11, I lost a bull because I forgot to shut the gate. I thought I shut it, I swore I shut it…, but he got loose. I had to drive around for a couple of hours and try to find him. Luckily, my uncle found him and got him back home, but I was so upset. This was also a time when beef prices were sky high and people would steal cattle ( in the 1960s), so I thought cost my family a fortune. We know you feel bad, but these things do happen. You were driving at 11? Then I thought about my dad left school & was working down the pits at 11, so he was probably driving at 11 too. I lived on a farm in England with 5or 6 horses, I remember many times over the years my dad shouting at me early in the morning to get up the horses had got out again, amazing how everyone knew what animals belonged to who, we only knew because people rang the farm. He would drive me there, I automatically took a bridle & half a bucket of corn, catch the ring leader, ride bare back & the rest would follow, there is me in that freezing weather holding the bucket & reins in one hand, directing traffic with the other. They went in the stables or another field. Now I whinge about the heat here in Oz lol but never the winter.

You should make sure your cats are in the mud room at night or they will be taken too. And possibly look into an LGD, while Joey might normally be a deterrent she's a shepherd dog not a guarding one she doesn't know to keep predators out and this time off year predators will take bigger risks. The ultimate responsibility for the safety of all farm animals is that of the parents.
My parents expected too much of their 13 children, to do their jobs. We ended up having a very expensive newly built barn go up in flames with all out cows burned to death, because of a firebug middle son. Then years later, after rebuilding the herd, the youngest son starved the herd to death in the middle of winter.
I was long gone, out of the nest when this happened, how they got away with not being charged with negligence is a mystery to me, but this was back when farmers had autonomy with little govt interference, unlike today.
There were 10 girls and 3 boys, I was the 5th girl, who took the barn responsibilities seriously because at that time my mother was ALWAYS with us showing what was required. The eldest boy understood his responsibility and was a great farmer. My heart goes out to Eli, not his fault

Great Pyrenees were bred centuries ago to work with peasant shepherds and herding dogs in the Pyrenees Mountains, the natural border between France and Spain. The dog’s job was to watch the flock and deter predators, whether wolves, bears, or livestock rustlers. The breed’s innate patience came in handy when sitting atop a freezing-cold mountain for days on end with nothing to do but look at sheep. Their courage when defending the flock was legendary.

It’s definitely hard to care for animals that continually work against you or do stupid things repeatedly for no apparent reason, like why would they not want to sleep at night? I have definitely had my experiences being lazy and paying the price. Just recently, I lost one of my favorite chickens, Pearl. She was a super tiny splash silkie with stunted growth for some reason, and as an adult could still fit in my hand. She was bullied by the other chickens and actually preferred to stay with the cats (our cats and chickens share a barn. We have a chicken wire wall separating their areas, and in the cats side there is a cat door for the cats to come in/out) and so Pearl lived with the cats. Once or twice the cats batted lightly at her but soon they were all like siblings because my cats are very used to chickens and know not to eat them. I would offer her chicken food but she often preferred to eat literally side by side with the cats, eating their food so I was like whatever, it’s probably fine if that’s what she likes. After a while of staying solely with the cats she hopped back and forth between chickens and cats. One night I was hanging out with a friend and we were locking up my animals together. She noticed Pearl was out with the cats and put her in with the chickens, but before we could close the door she ran back out again. Tried to put her back once more and the same thing happened. I told my friend to just let her be, she likes being with the cats, etc. and so we let her be. That was the last night I saw her. The next morning, I noticed she was gone when I was treating my chickens to some corn. If she had been in with the chickens she always ran back and forth under the other chickens legs and since I didn’t see her doing that, I looked to the cat side, fully expecting to see her waiting out there for me to give her corn because I always tried to support her (I won’t go into details but she had very good reasons for leaving the flock, and I 100% sympathized with her) and when she wasn’t there, the alarms went off. I found a bit of blood outside but nothing else. Turned out to be a raccoon that actually took one of my 3-month old Cochin chicks on a different occasion (abt a week before) and then came back a couple days after Pearls death, figured out how to use the cat door, and got into our cat and chicken food. It was such a hard lesson to learn since Pearl was one of my very favorites. She liked to cuddle a lot, I think because she still craved being social even though she wasn’t in the flock. She had her own unique Pearl noises and I loved to give her special treats and even bring her in the house occasionally (and on my farm, this is THE HIGHEST you could possibly get) and she was just overall very unique and special and sometimes if I imagine very hard, it feels like I am still holding her. I remember exactly the noise she would make when I picked her up and the way her grizzled feathers felt. Anyways if for some reason you read to the end of this, you’re awesome and thank you on behalf of Pearl. And if you read this, Eli, I just want to say that I completely understand how you feel. We’re in the same boat dude

I so enjoyed how you spent the time going with Eli. This is teaching. Yes there is loss but teaching responsibility in an accepting manner. This builds character.
My father told myself & my siblings, "those that don't make mistakes are those that don't do anything ". We were not allowed to be lazy so we made mistakes.
But this society only recognizes negative outcomes as a mistake. Few people can name a positive mistake, aka an unintended positive outcome to one's action. The name of this is serendipity.
But loss is the reason one feels badly about the negative outcome. One should learn from both positive & negative outcomes of our actions. Scientists are taught to take copious notes so that a positive outcome can be repeated.
TY for this family moment. TY for showing you as a family are looking for what manner and which animal made your livestock their meal. Many in American society do not realize farmers have to defeat natural predators. There has to be a balance brought about that allows humans to fit into the ecology.

one immediate thing you can do is get a Livestock Guard Dog, or two - because of the size of your lovely farm.
Predators are territorial. They will not come onto your property to hunt if that land is ‘already claimed’ by predators you train not to eat your livestock. Plus, in the event that they are bold enough to risk it, your LGD(s) will be equally matched to fight/scare it off

    • @graicerobertson7346
      @graicerobertson7346 Год назад

I fear them getting through the electric fence around your duck pond is proof they’re not threatened to hunt in that area, and they need to be deterred. I believe a LGD is your best bet, next to staying up all night with a shotgun 😢 it’s the circle of life but I want to see your farm thrive! it seems every upload lately has been hardships. we’re all rooting for you and your family!!

I just wanted to reach out and let you know how much I appreciate the videos that you create. It's evident that you're passionate about growing different species of birds and animals, and it's amazing to see the love and care that you put into their growth.
I wanted to express my support for your future projects, and I look forward to seeing what you'll do next. Your channel is a breath of fresh air on RUclips, and I love how you show the beauty of nature in your videos.
However, I was saddened to see your turkey attacked by wild animals in one of your recent videos. It's always tough to see something like that happen to an animal that we've grown to love and care for. I hope that the rest of your animals are safe and sound.
Anyway, I just wanted to drop you a message to express my appreciation and support for what you do. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos soon.

My four kids were athletes so their responsibilities were different but they too faltered from time to time, all part of the growing up process. So pass on this quick note to him would you? “Eli, you now know what happens when you get a little lazy and don’t make sure your farm animals and birds aren’t put away. It’s a tough way to learn a lesson, but this event will only make you realize how much they depend on you man. Shake it off Eli, we all make mistakes”. Get that aviary finished and Problem solved!!!

When I lived at my grandparents, we used peppermint and spearmint plants to detour pests from the chickens. Mind you though, peppermint and spearmint grows like a weed and if not takent care of, it'll spread everywhere, yet it does keep that area smelling good and it makes for some nice hot minty tea for the morning and night.
I hope you find whatever is killing your birds. We have a few coyotes here where I live, too, and I'm in the city! I hear them yapping sometimes, and I've seen one run across the parking lot of my apartment complex.
So stay safe and stay frosty!

We had turkey hens attacked in a pen in our yard no more than 20 feet from our house by a bobcat. They were completely enclosed and the bobcat got a leg under the turkey house and used claws to grab them. One hen died of her injuries the others survived but there were some pretty deep gashes from the claws. We've also had predators 2 time us, Owl panicking the birds and raccoon grabbing them as the try to get away.

Eli is a child, and at least Becky yelled and blamed in in the beginning of the the video. She then tells him to "walk the perimeter of the property", which your property is huge. That's not "handling it calmly". Have you as parents ever even thought that, though he may care for his family and the animals, that he might not want to be a farmer? Regardless at least Becky handled it poorly, and the both of you put a lot of responsibility on a child by himself.

Was thinking threw the whole video, that maybe you guys should have a Walkie-talkie's so you can communicate throughout doing your chores!!??...
..It would be cool to see the kids each get their own on a belt at some point.. like a bandage of honor, not to mention it would be beneficial for safety reasons and cool to hear everyone over the radio!! "Come-in to mumma base over!?.." 😂❤🤞
❤ Eli I know sometimes it's easier to take a quicker route to get chores done, We've all been there, I bet even your parents have too! 😅 But safety should be a top priority when your on a farm!
