Flyers missed the playoffs by 1 single point last season, then added Michkov.
Most expect a step back this season, but dead last in the East would be crazy.
They're such a wildcard you know? I think expectations would be the worst thing for them. They'll thrive under the desire to prove everyone wrong, just like they did last season.
They also could very well finish last, it's not impossible, but I agree a last-place finish is probably just as unlikely as it is for them to qualify for postseason play
And hey, if they DO finish last, 2025 is the draft class they have the most stake/picks in
@@HatTrkPatrk I just find it absurd to project any team other than Columbus to finish last in the East. They were the worst team in the conference by a mile last year…
@TheHockeyGuy I almost always agree with your takes, however I can’t get onboard with the Flyers finishing last in the East. They missed the wildcard by one point last season in a stacked Eastern Conference, and only did so by collapsing down the stretch losing 8 out of their last 10. They traded Sean Walker for a 1st at the deadline for their rebuild and replaced him with the corpse of Ryan Johansen, so their young core of defenseman was overtaxed and hurt. They also lost Errson and had to throw in the rookie Fedotov in some big games down the stretch. They added Michkov this offseason, so at least they are getting an influx of top end scoring talent to help push them over the hump. All this to say I think they’ll be better than last in the East.
i hope to see some of Buffalo Ottawa Utah and Detroit break the playoff droughts this year.
Utah deserves an end to their long wait.😂

The Bruins bring in one of the top two way centers in the league in Lindholm, and get Poitras back from injury to solve their center problem. They also bring in a top defenseman in Zadorov, as well as Lohrei now up for the whole year. They've improved on both offense and defense. They give up Ullmark in goal, but Swayman had moved past him as the number one goalie anyways, resulting in little change in goal. Last year's rookies, Beecher and Brazeau, and this year's rookies Merkulov and Lysell have breakout potential. They've improved and you have them moving down? They should once again challenge for 1st, and will be better set up for the playoffs with increased speed and size, and they won't have $5M in salary sitting on the bench in Ullmark.

Shannon…thanks for putting the Sabres #1 in the thumbnail, it means a lot.
If the Sabres can get their scoring from two years ago back, which i fully believe they will by buying out the defensive blackhole that is Skinner that Tuch and Thompson had to cover for him will allow them to be offensive more, especially with Peterka up there with them, in combination with way better team D from their bottom 6 and Dahlin taking the next step into the Norris convo and UPL going off, like he did since January, the whole year and Sabres could be well above the playoff line IMO
It’s literally going to depend on how your goalies perform. All the pieces are there.
I like the Sabres chances more then the Red Wings.
@jacoblaurain8911 I fully believe that UPL has found that next step, I think keeping Levi up here, unless he struggles early on in his chances in the net, and sending Reimer down is the best tandem IMO but I wouldn't be mad if Levi goes down, as it would be easier even though I doubt any team is taking Reimer on waivers for a million one way lol, and Reimer stays up to back up UPL but Reimer better be ready himself. Should be better than some think, definite recency bias here
@AmosDohms Red Wings do this every year and it doesn't help lol. You could argue that they are crawling up the standing little by little but it's even smaller margin than Buffalo IMO
@@SabresGuy87 The wings strategy this off season is a bit different than the last 2 that you’re referring to. The new additions so far that will play are Talbot, Tarasenko, Motte, and Gustafsson. They lost Sprong, Ghost, Walman, Fabbri, Perron, and Czarnik. They’re bringing up Edvinsson, Johansson, and Berggren to fill new roles, finally. They didn’t have any rookie play a significant role last year.
They arguably are worse on paper than last year. They lost a lot of talent. They’re hoping Berggren and Edvinsson can play top 9 and top 4 roles, which is the first time they have high rookie expectations since Raymond/Mo 3 years ago!
"its hot as hell outside" I love you Shannon
Ottawa has new ownership in place to start the season, a new GM, a new coach, and Staios has cleaned up several messes leftover from Dorion. Plus, he also acquired Ullmark. All advance stats show that if Ottawa had over .900 save percentage last year, they would have made the playoffs. I know, I know, there were issues with the whole team last year (Pinto suspended 41 games for instance), but I really think if they make another move or two to get veteran D-Man and/or forward, I believe that they bill finish 10 ten or better in the East. But that's just my opinion. Can't wait for the season to start!! Love your content Shannon, keep up the great work. How on earth do you put the Capitals in 9th though?! Cheers

The only one I definitely disagree with is Vegas. They lost 2 top 6 forwards one of which is a consistent 40 goal scorer and Conn Smythe winner AND didn't replace him. I mean I guess you got Hertl? In my opinion though, Stephenson is definitely a better player with a better contract than Hertl. The Hertl trade was bad... on the bright side though Hanifin is great for them. I wouldn't see this roster as being one competing for a cup though or even being higher in the standings even when Stone gets hurt in February. I like Utahs odds being 6th more than I like Vegas being 6th. I just don't see it.
True, but they had major injuries last season. Hertl never really even played for them healthy. Plus, if Stone, Eichel and Theodore play full seasons it will make a big difference, I think.
@jeffreym.8957 bro you can go compare Hertls stats and Stephensons stats and Stephenson has better stats, and he's getting paid 2 AAV less than Hertl. You can say this and that about injuries but every team has injuries every year. Vegas might have had more than a lot of teams but they still lost in the first round with being 10 mil over the cap. I'm not trying to be rude man, I just really don't see the explanation for it. Before too long they're gunna be the new Pittsburg senior citizens.

@@Corey-zn8kd this is the stupidest comment I've ever seen.
Marchessault isn't a consistent 40 goal scorer. He's a consistent 25-30 goal scorer. Stephenson as a player falls off pretty noticeably when not playing with Stone. Stone is the play driver and Stephenson's speed complimented him.
Hertl was always replacing Stephenson and the hope is a player like Dorofeyev can get 15-20 goals. It's not perfect but it's definitely not crippling.
They also added Hanafin to their blue line giving them the ability to make a forward for defense trade.
if you look at the stanley cups from the past 10 years, it's only 6-4 east vs west, and fewer east teams have actually taken it all, due to 2 separate repeats
As a Sharks fan, it's hard to imagine being dead last again, but its even harder to pick out teams the Sharks might actually leap frog. I think Calgary is the only one they have a shot at.
Hey, as a Devils fan after the disaster of this year, I’ll sign on for 4th in the East. As always, good job HG!
I’m honestly shocked you picked Philly for 16th! Was not expecting that
Hey, I have that jersey. Once again, the Admirals unfortunately do not play the Canucks this season.
For me your pretty close woth the esst and west...tho id have it oiler then dallas then Colorado...it will always come down to injuroes tho
Injuries are one of the variables you can't account for. My example is New Jersey from last year.
Yeah I think NJ will bounce back to around 100 points.
A very small jump forward for Anaheim after a weak free agency and trade moves. I’m hoping this young team does make some growth and the team can find some chemistry.
COLORADO let's go!!!!!
I wasn't expecting you to put CO 1st
I was acting expecting oiler dallas then Colorado but I agree with those as the top 3
Can you put the magnets directly on the cats, I feel like that would improve the videos quality.
All I know going off previous trends, Dallas will have 15+ OTL’s this year 🎉

I think the Avs are actually in trouble. Their uncertain cap leaves them literally one injury from disaster at every position. They could really end up struggling.

@@Corey-zn8kd mkay... did you reply to the wrong thing by any chance?
I think you can say that about any team if they have enough major injuries. The Avs forward depth is only really matched by EDM(even without Landeskog, who by all reports is looking good) and their defensive depth is probably top 5 maybe top 10. The only glaring weakness is goalie, which is a pretty big weakness tbh and could hold them back.
@@ianjenkinson5282 and im saying ONE major injury for the Avs and its quits. I dont like what I see.
This is why I dont like YT discussions: you either willingly ignored the comment you replied to... or just didnt understand it. I even emphasized the single injury with a useless 'literally' and you somehow still missed it?
Colorado is the biggest what if, because of Landeskog and Nichushkin.
Nice to see the Milwaukee Admirals jersey
Colorado I'm interested to see what they're gonna do to their cap situation. Interesting season coming on both sides I was expecting RW to return to PO in last season Sens even Sabers might return to PO if everything works, but only time will tell.
I agree with THG that the Rangers and Florida will be at the top in the East. However, I think he should have stuck with Edmonton and Dallas in the West.
Has a Habs fan I can't see us being outside of that 14-16 spot in the East. But we could end up anywhere in those 3 spots. So I would say you nailed it.
It's a question of the defense getting better defensively to help the goaltending. Everything else seems to be going better....patience .....
@@JPBelanger Exactly. Patience is key. At the end of last season the freaking media had a bunch of articles like ''How's Martin St-Louis going to handle the pressure next season when the team is expecting to take a big step forwards''
And all I'm thinking is, how can you actually expect to take a big step when we have exactly the same team?
Just tchill, let the young D's develop and once our real offensive prospects get into the lineup and have a year or two of NHL experience then you can make an argument about expecting to take a big step forwards.
@@electrohouselover07 the media: failed junior coaches and fourth liners.
My only worry is that coaches have a shelf life. I'd really like to see MSL get a real chance. But that's a meta game worry.
Always happy when you don't commit the fatal error of putting a team at the top. In this case Vancouver. 5th is a modest realistic expectation and it still puts them in a playoff position. Well played HG! Well played.
I don’t think the sharks will be dead last again. But as a sharks fan I’m all for it
I think the Flyers love the fact you put them last. They'll be very happy to prove you wrong
Colorado first is wild. Cap situation a complete mess, Nuke and Landeskog giant question marks. We will see!
I'd have them 5th. Van Dal EDM top 3 imo
Wouldn’t call it any more wild than putting them 5th. They still have MacKinnon Rantanen and Makar plus a legit 2C at the start of the year for the first time since kadri.
Start of the year yeah it’s gonna be interesting with the question marks, but they will be answered by the deadline.
I do agree with you though first is incredibly generous, but not 5th haha.
There's no way Dallas is top 3 in the West this year. Their blue line isn't improved in any way and they've lost Tanev, they've lost Pavelski, Robo was getting points but was extremely quiet throughout the playoffs, and Dallas is relying on an extremely young core peppered with rookies and sophomores, all while still having cap issues this season and the question of what happens with Benn's (their Captain) contract.
We'll see flashes of brilliance and a foreshadowing of things to come but they aren't going to have the finish, endurance, or solidarity that they've had the last several years. I have them in 4th in the West, with Nashville in 3rd, and out of the playoffs by the end of round 2.
This’ll be a make or break year for DeBoer, they can’t afford another disappointing conference finals exit, he’ll be on the chopping block if he fails again
lmao talk about bias Colorado as 5th????????????
How do you put a one line team Colorado over Dallas?
coming from a massive flames fan, I think the leafs should be way higher, probably 2nd or 3rd in east
My standings purely looking at the line ups as things stand right now:
East: Metro: 1) NYR 2) Carolina 3) Pittsburgh 4) NYI 5) NJD 6) Washington 7) Philadelphia 8) Columbus (only the top 3 will make the playoffs, but NYR will take 1st in the conference again); Atlantic: 1) Florida 2) Toronto 3) Boston 4) Detroit 5) Tampa Bay 6) Ottawa 7) Montreal 8) Buffalo (the top 5 will make the playoffs with Tampa getting NYR in the first round and Detroit getting Florida).
West: Pacific: 1) Edmonton 2) Vegas 3) Vancouver 4) Los Angeles 5) Seattle 6) San Jose 7) Anaheim 8) Calgary (top 4 make the playoffs and Edmonton will take the President's trophy, but LA will end up being the lower seed wild card); Central: 1) Nashville 2) Dallas 3) Winnipeg 4) Colorado 5) St. Louis 6) Chicago 7) Minnesota 8) Utah (top 4 make the playoffs and Colorado gets the higher seed wild card).
Playoffs: First Round: NYR over Tampa Bay; Carolina over Pittsburgh; Detroit over Florida (calling an upset); Toronto over Boston; Edmonton over LA; Vancouver over Vegas; Nashville over Colorado; Winnipeg over Dallas.
Division Finals: Carolina over NYR; Detroit over Toronto (calling a Cinderella run); Edmonton over Vancouver; Nashville over Winnipeg.
Conference Finals: Carolina over Detroit; Edmonton over Nashville.
Stanley Cup Finals: Edmonton over Carolina.
As a Kings fan. Thank you for not giving us the Shannon jinx. Kings in the playoffs for sure now. 😂

What is that jersey you have on?
Yo that Preds hat is so clean
I have that same admirals jersey. It's sweet
good insight but i garuntee like every other nhl season there will be suprises, and i hope the suprise is the habs proving everyone wrong and making the playoffs
Capitals could definitely at least hold steady at 8th. Their goalie tandem is very good (probably even underrated) and the defense is solid. If they can get more scoring from somewhere (perhaps PLD does a good job at passing to Ovi) and if they can stay healthy, I could see them being even a bit better than last year. Certainly not contender status or anything like that, but a playoff team.
Boston I think is going to fall. No scoring, no depth at forward, too much pressure on Swayman and a pretty good defense, but not game-breakingly good. I don't know if I see them falling out of the playoffs, but I could see it happen. Canes and Tampa are also going to fall down, again maybe not out of the playoffs, but closer to the line at least, so maybe the competition for playoff spots 5-8 in the East is going to be the thriller late in the season.
Playoff teams in the West could be the exact same teams, but if I had to bet on one team falling on their face, I would bet on Canucks.
Washington was lucky last year. It boggles the mind that they can have a goal differential of -37 and make the playoffs. They won't be so lucky this season. Also the addition of Dubois is a big red flag.
I dont see colorado finishing at the top. As it stands today i would guess 104 points. They finish behind dallas and ahead of nashville. Now is that 2nd, 3rd, or 4th....id guess 4th
Yeah, crazy to put Colorado in the top spot. My picks for the West are: 1. Edmonton, 2. Dallas, 3. Colorado, 4. Nashville, 5. Vancouver, 6. Winnipeg, 7. LA, 8. Vegas
I have absolutely no expectations for next year, some of the best teams lost a lot of players while some worse teams improved quite a bit, so almost anything could happen and I wouldn’t be too surprised ngl
