The interesting part about Monahan is how valuable he can be as a mentor. He was a wonderful mentor for Suzuki and Slafkovsky etc. I imagine he can be a great mentor to Lindstrom and Fantelli.
That was one of the few changes I would make with his list. I love Monahan. I think he’ll be captain for CBJ. And I think he would have been assistant captain or captain to any other team he would have possibly gone too. As a Blues fan i didn’t think he fit our team right now, but still wanted him anyway. So for what CBJ got him for I think it’s super cheap for what he’ll do in the long run for Columbus.
yep,Slafkovsky just broke 50 goal per season mark with Mony as a mentor... I just can't help myself to say this but Montreal is a mess. They'll never succeed with their current core.
Monny, is such a good player and I still wish he was a flames player. Wish him success and health in his time in the show.
@@wild_insomnia you clearly aren't paying attention if you think montreal is a mess
@@mikedufour4829 it is more a work in progress . So far Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovskỳ played well together , the unknown is the trio on Alex NewHook, Kirby Dach and Joshua Roy / Josh Anderson. Eventually When Ivan Demidov will join the team thing will change again !
Duclair to the islanders honestly feels like a slam dunk. Something that team could really use on the top 6 as well. I also really like that Vik Arvidsson deal for the Oilers, very good middle 6 upgrade
not sure if Duclair is that good
he should be a pred still.
@@Realistic316he played very well for the sharks and bolts. IMO it isn’t a bad deal for the islanders. Also adds much needed speed
@@Realistic316 That's my gut instinct as well about this one...
@@Windyyyyyyyyy he isn’t even going to reach 30 points
I love that contract for Matt Roy. He's a solid defenseman. Can't wait to see him play in a Caps jersey.
Marchessault is definitely motivated. Really like the Devils signing Pesce.
I would say Jeff Skinner from Sabres to Edmonton should be included in top 10.... 2 years 3M/year, Bargain
Except it’s a 1 year at 3 mil, not 2 years.
@@safertobeanonymous2224 he'll be back..
But Edmonton still has that bum who did nothing 4 of the 7 finals games ..... 🤔🤔🤔 what was his name ...... McOverrated 🤣🤣🤣
@@winkletown8828the conn smythe winner?🤔
@@de_prest The guy is either trolling or lack brain cells. You won't gain much from interacting with him :P
I can't wait to see Pesce in Jersey. He basically said in an interview that he has always wanted to be a Devil being they were his hometown team and it seems he is pumped in being there.
Also love that Tatar and Noesen are back, both were awesome in there time in Jersey and it seems they wanted to be back as well.
New coach, new D, new goaltending, Hamilton back, size up front. Looking forward to the season. LGD!
@@Cape-Dweller I think they will battle NYR for top spot in the division and come out ahead, as long as Markstrom stays solid. Carolina will take a bit of a drop to 3rd.
as a Sharks fan i’m so happy to see smart signings and contracts again.
As soon as we get out from under a vlasic we’re going to be golden
I love the free agency adds
Mike G doing really well
Really good!
Yeah buddy. I would say, The Sharks got a whole lot better.
@@yoholmes273 Even though I am an Oilers fan, I wouldn't mind seeing the Sharks in the very least, making the first round. They kind of deserve it after a good off-season so far IMO.
Heinen earned this deal. Considering that he had a PTO contract last year..
As a habs fan, I am glad we kept quiet but I will say if there is one player/contract I would have liked it would be Marchessault. Great deal for Nashville!
It was the term more than the cap hit for Montreal. 5 years is too long with the new crop of players coming up. Next year will be the year for a splash in FA.
Him and stamkos talked before signing there, so I don’t think anyone else had much of a chance signing him.
Too long term
12:03 Marchessault too long term. 2 years too long imo
the preds just got 2 insane players. i cant believe we have stamkos and marchessault now. the preds 2nd line next season will be better than our old 1st lines.
Those contracts will not age well. Don't think they were such great pickups for Nashville.
@@hockeyfan7100 thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard. u heard hocky guy. if the contracts too long u dump them. doesnt get worse than johanson and duchene.
@@deathgrinderb3284 u aint gonna dump them for free, nashvile needs to get somewhere far these next few years now because it's their cup window, after that they may be in some trouble
@@hockeyfan7100gotta agree Tampa made the right move
Nashville isn't looking longterm with these contracts. They are pushing for the next 2 to 3 years in hope to finally get over the hump before the team needs a rebuild.
I love the Martinez contract help teach the young Defenseman how to win
I'm biased, but I think the Teravainen signing is the best one. I never wanted to see him traded away, and this signing corrects that mistake. I'm happy that he was willing to return, and even happier that Bedard is getting more help. It's a good deal, too.
his homecoming feels wonderful!
Agree
Take care of him yall, we’re gonna miss him in Raleigh
Turbo is a great player, people will be shocked at how consistently good he is in all three zones, night after night. Dude almost never has a bad game
#1 Jeff Skinner in Edmonton, no matter how you look at it, it’s extremely unlikely to be a flop, even if he only did 15-20 goals, Edmonton will take that at 3 mil AAV and run away with it ... all smiles.
If uninjured and playing with Draisatl or McDavid or both, i can easily see a revival of his career at 35+ goals.
and he finally gets to make the playoffs (presumably)
Maybe. I could see him working well with RNH. If they could ever figure out wingers for McDrai, thatd be a crazy good 3rd line (Mcloed-RNH-Skinner?)
@@TheScotian82 I think the OIlers might actually run holloway with Drai. They have enough guys to spread out those guys over 3 lines now.
@@TheScotian82 They should do Skinner-McDavid-Hyman
Nuge-Leon-Arvidsson
thats fucking lethal bro💀💀
@@frankytanky5076I can't imagine Skinner was acquired to play anything but top 6 minutes, whether it is with McDavid or Draisaitl. I also think breaking up that Janmark-Henrique-Brown 3rd line isn't a good idea, that line was Edmonton's best in the finals and should get time moving forward.
Edmonton looks to be in great shape heading into next season, but I most like what Nashville has done so far in the off season. They had a fantastic first line last season and now they should have 2 very good lines. And somewhat surprisingly, still with Saros in net. Both teams looking great on paper, should be exciting for their fan bases.
Happy 4th of July to all my American friends. 🎆
Thank you to the Mr. & Mrs. Hockey Guy family for all that they do. 🫡
The best game you can name is the good old hockey game 🏒
I’m glad the Sharks and Blackhawks were active. They’re not going to be good next season, but at least they’ll be respectable.
Nope. Two more seasons, then they can take aim at respectable.
You don’t go from 32nd in Goals Allowed/32nd in Goals For like these two teams did respectively, to respectable in a few months. Has Anaheim? It’s a five-year process, three if a lot of moolah’s spent and that can be a negative if things don’t work out.
@@GizmoBeachThe Blackhawks and Sharks could be the two worst teams in the NHL again and still be respectable
@@GizmoBeachwhat were the Blackhawks worst areas? Shooting and defense. Bedard now has people to pass the puck to, so that's one big problem solved. You don't think these additions aren't going to make the better? Teuvo and Bertuzzi are going to motivate the team on both ends of the ice? When the sneak a few W's off of teams they shouldn't beat, feel free to eat your crow. I'm not saying they're playoff bound, but they're going to be a much different team than you just saw.
As far as the sharks however, they'll likely remain bottom feeders for the next 275 years or so. Losing is the culture in SJ. No single draft pick is going to remedy that. I'll happily cheer everytime they suffer another L. They d🎉deserve to have a team at this point. " we here in SJ have a plan for our 87 year rebuild" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I totally agree on that the Marchessault deal made by the Predators was the best deal! As a die hard Knights fan from day 1, my heart is broken. He will be missed terribly by fans, but even more so by his teammates! Marchy was 100% correct in saying that management did not try to keep him! $3,000,000 contract for 3 years for everything that he has become? Really? That was an insult to his and our intelligence! This is a player who has gotten stronger and better every year! In his seventh year with the Knights, he did not miss1 single game in the regular season and the 7 games of the postseason. He had more hat tricks, more goals and more assists than the other players! Karlsson, Eichel and Stone - players that they kept - spent weeks off from injury and never came back to 100%. Who was the player who had to kick in when they were on their extended time offs? Marchy was there and performed. How much is Karlsson making? How much is Stone making? How much is Eichel making? What McCrimmon did was not fair and not right! The hell of it is, he got nothing in return to replace Marchy. It will be three to four years before the Knights are looked upon as contenders for the Cup. You can’t give away half of the winning team and expect to win. Their goal is not win, but to save money! Nashville will wipe up the ice with the Knights! Go Marchy!
Good assessment. So they offered him the same crap Tampa offered Stamkos.
Now they can watch the Preds win
Sadly you shouldn't be surprised by Vegas management. Look how they treated Fleury, it was so low class. Hope Marchessault kicks it this year
Always liked Monahan, and wish him the best. Met him once in Calgary. Just seemed like such a grounded, cool guy. Wished he had gone to Edmonton this off-season, but, being reunited with his former teammate in Gaudreau, could revitalize them both.
Loved the Skinner signing in Edmonton myself. A nice change of scenery. No expectations of the world on his shoulders. A reasonable cap hit for certain. He can stay out of the spotlight in Edmonton, and just.............. play.
I have a feeling both Skinner, and Monahan, are both gonna have pretty nice seasons this year, barring any unforeseen injuries or anything.
Shannon, you're a Legend, thank you for your service, love your vids! looking forward to the next season!
Matt Roy was such an underrated pick up for washington.
He got more $$$ than I thought
@@speedyv6247 also goes to show PLD probably isn't the cancer he's cracked up to be
Roy is a solid player. Too bad Utah, Jersey or Carolina didn't open their checkbooks
Barry Trotz went all in...the Preds are gonna be an interesting team to watch
Got much older and expensive
@@samslone9457they got much more offensive firepower too. Which they desperately needed.
They're eager to go far while Saros is still in his prime.
Winning the off season never seems to actually translate to regular season success. Nashville should be good, but we will see.
Cam Atkinson to TBL for 900k is a great under-the-radar signing too. He could put up some big points there and on a very cheap contract
Arvidsson, Skinner, Henrique, Janmark in Edmonton could all be in top 20.
The sound the marker makes on the board is soo therapeutic and my favourite trade is Hakanpaa to the lafs
Shannon, you never cease to amaze me with your video ideas. This one is great, especially because I respect your opinion on both players and teams and you outline well why you think these signings are beneficial to the teams.
Nashville at this time i would think has to be considered a cup contender
The Henrique deal excites me the most. I can’t believe we pulled it off.
I like the Marchessault contract perhaps the best. He's a fun player to watch and Nashville in general is pretty exciting to watch as well. On paper they should do well this coming season if all the gears mesh. But then again....Look out! Here come the Oilers It's gonna be fun to see unfold. Now....sigh... if only my poor downtrodden Flyers could get some airspeed! Cheers Shannon, thank you sir for your hard work.
You're the best. Thanks so much for your hockey insight.
Kings are banking on Brandt Clark to fill in for Roy but with some more offensive
As a caps fan I am very excited we got roy he's been one of my random favorite players and couldn't be happier the caps got em combined with robbing Ottawa of chychrun I think the defense is gonna look a lot better this year for the caps.
Nashville is going to be scary next year trotz is doing very well as a hm
The capitals are having a fantastic offseason...
Happy fireworks everyone!!😊
Happy Independence day! Remember too look out for your fingers when ripping fireworks, my amazing southern neighbors! The more patriotism the better nowadays! May God smile on North America forever! And Hockey too!
4 former Canes on the list. Yes, Ghost counts as a former Cane as well… All quality players. Pesce has gotten slower the last cpuple seasons. That contract may not age well. Totally agree on all others. I will miss seeing Turbo, Skjei, and Neosen in Canes sweaters.
Not to mention NJD also already got Kovacevic (quite underrated) and Dillon as defensive D. Pesce at a 6x5.5 is just overkill especially considering their goalies had a bad xGSA.
i so like teuvo so much that i referred to the canes as the Teravaina Hurricanes. glad to have him back in chicago!
Great video, great list, thank you for your continuous effort and content. 🍻
My father and I call Matt Roy “Mattrick Roy”
i always instinctively pronounce his name as "wah" and have to correct myself
Warren Foegele to LA and Yakov Trenin to Minnesota and Nikita Zadorov to Boston are my top 3
Another good video as you so often do. Also, as a fellow lefty, I have to say your ability to write on a whiteboard left-handed, legibly and without smudging is very impressive.
And I like the Gostisbehere and Heinen contracts myself.
Duclair or DeBrusk are my 2 best value deals from the FA class so far
I am Canucks fan and debrusk didn't exactly come cheap. His stats don't deserve this pay but do have a feeling hi could settle in nicely. I'd like to see him with Miller.
As a bruins fan, that JD contract is going to be hit or miss. Will you get the JD that played his best season next to Krejci? Or will you get the dude that maddens you by disappearing for weeks on end. He’s very talented but disappears a lot and is a horribly streaky scorer. I’m a huge fan of the kid but I’m glad they passed on that contract
Had high hopes going into last season for the Devils but this off season seems to be different. Really cant wait to see how everything comes together
Agree about Arvidsson, but his durability really is a big question. Based on what the Kings know about him, playing a full, healthy season is not something you should count on at this point.
Cam Atkinson to the Bolts i feel was an under rated move.
Love this vid. Maybe next time include age and position. Just a thought. Also, how about a top 10 improved teams?
Hopefully I eat my words, but Imagine Dallas getting Matt Roy, or Pesce, or just about anything other than Dumba and Lyubushkin.
Preds are going to be dangerous next year.
as a kings fan, you’re damn right i’m gonna miss Roy. our blue line looks completely different now without him.
Really wished the Kings could have landed Marchessault. Still scratching my head on the Edmunson contract. And a ton of depth signings i don't really understand.
Dam the marker squeaking kills me !
Yes but it OLD SCHOOL TO IT
@@u.s.m.c.fewproudthemarines2987I remember when markers were the new school and chalk was the old school 😂
are you going to do an offseason power rankings?
I hadn't really thought about it but at this point after like what 7 or 8 years I think I've probably heard shannon ask me to subscribe well over 1000 times.
it's not you he's asking, it's the dips who haven't yet
I think the preds definitely got a great deal for Marchessault, it’s insane we were able to get him for under 6 years and 6 million.
He scores goals, he works hard, and he’s a fun, likable character. However, there are some serious holes in his game beyond that. Ideally he is the only the trigger man, because he is a turnover machine in the neutral zone, and loses a lot of battles along the boards. There is no lukewarm with him, you’ll be jumping out of your seat, or cursing him.
I definitely prefer Skinner's contract over Arvidssons. Skinner has more offensive upside, the contract is cheaper, plus Arvidsson is or at least has been a massive diver. Having said that, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the two perform in Edmoton. Both contracts could end up being massive value if their offensive numbers get the Zach Hyman treatment playing with the Oilers. Oilers' depth was massively underrated last year, and a lot of people ended up looking pretty stupid for calling them a one or two man team. I wonder what those people are going to say this year in an attempt to discredit the Oilers.
Not sure how 2 yrs @ $4m for Arvidsson carries risk, but this was fun!
He is very injury prone. If he stays healthy it’s a good signing, if he can’t then it’s not. That’s why it carries some risk
The guentzel signing should be top 10. He is gonna put up big points with TB power play and if he plays on same line as kucherov.
so happy we got pesce!!!
Shannon, you have such nice handwriting.
maybe Arvidsson is brought in for ltir shenanigans, big brain move
To be fair to RV, when healthy he is a hell of a player, very tenacious with great finish (even though he's Swedish).
@@devackroyd all swedish no finnish
The Avs re-signing Drouin and Middlestadt made me the happiest. But I'm quite excited to see what Nashville can do with the new talent.
They gave mittlestadt too much money. His QO was only 2.6
@@creamcheesewonton420 maybe, but it just felt like the right move for their second line.
I can appreciate that you are writing on the board as you go! Good work sir. Was super sad that Heinen didn't stay in Boston. Good get for VAN!!!! And I've been a huge Roy fan for years too. Had him in fantasy leagues for a couple years. Another one I wished BOS would have targeted.
Myers for $3Mx3 actually may be the low-key winner if you look at other comparable defensemen.
Sure a good deal but he doesn't count. The list is for players who signed with new teams.
Interested too see what Terror-senko does in Detroit. Or does he ask for a trade half way through the season again :P
I thought he was a solid player even if his production is less than before. He will do well in Detroit and is a smart player who plays winning hockey
I'm still shocked by the Bolts letting Sergachev go to Utah. Now that's going to help a lot.
As a division rival, I still think the Maple Leafs did a good job with the free agency signings with the sole exception being Chris Tanev's deal. Giving a long term deal to a player already in his thirties and plays a tough, defensive game has LTIR written all over it in the back end of that contract. Perhaps intentional to recoup cap?
I loved Monahan & Gaudreau in their Flames days, but their peak was about 6 years ago and I don't know if you can go back in time. It never seems to work. But if they can be 80% of what they were with Calgary, it could be a good deal. Maybe something will finally work for Columbus. You can't be wrong ALL the time.
I would have expected Teuvo to fetch more when signing with a rebuilding team.
Just a thought - Yes Edmonton had/has explosive offence but quite often I saw Warren Foegele score with his own effort and not when McDavid and Draisaidl and company was on the ice... I think he will get even more ice time with Los Angeles and will raise some eyebrows..
Yeah, he’s a hard worker. Hopefully he can continue to excel with the Kings.
I liked Foegele in Edmonton. He did have a tendency to disappear though. Hope he does well in LA.
Foegle almost completely disappeared in the playoffs when the Oilers really needed him. It was difficult to watch from how his regular season went to being an almost non factor in critical games.
Foegele only really consistently scored when he was on Drais line, this season at least. Without Drai he was very patchy. Very hard worker though, he just needs to figure out how to actually finish
Foegele is extremely prone to bad choices with the puck and has very little finish. This is why he was scratched vs Dallas. His numbers went down come playoff time unless he was stapled to Draisaitl, though every once in a while he will have a great individual effort. Good forechecker with a good motor though. Hope he does well.
Gottta be a weird feeling for you Kings fan to be proud to see the Foegele signing only to be immediately followed by two ex-Kings lol. At least you swindled the Caps in the trade (probably, you never know, but Kuemper has some great history behind hiim unlike Dubois).
I think durzi showed out on Arizona/Utah. He is much better then what LAK had him do. The freeeom of that system really let durzi flourish. The 1-3-1 the kings were running really didnt suit his skillset, but really suited Roy, which is why i think you have a better viewpoint on him.
Spot on. I couldn't argue against anything that you said. That being said, it will come down to injuries. Hopefully, these guys are healthy for a good, entertaining year in the NHL.
I can't see how Skinner's signing isn't on this list. Sure, it's 1 year, but at $3 million it's a steal.
he basically was, because the guy mentioned him , and said he was only taking 1 guy per team.
we'll miss you marchy
Skinner has never made the Playoffs... Poor fella.
Now do worst!
As a sens fan I’m glad to see Branny getting an opportunity elsewhere. He’s at least a top 6 defenseman and I still believe he can be a top 4 D. This past year his quickness and tenacity showed how he can be effective despite his smaller frame. Doesn’t really have the opportunity in Ottawa he might get on another team, but I’m worried Colorado might be a similar issue.
Foegele on the second line with
Moore - Danoult - Foegle
Pretty sure Danault going to line 3 and Byfield going line 2 center
Sean Durzi watching this video like what the hell did i do to this guy 😂
I'm a little surprised the Tarasenko signing didn't make your Top 10 list.
Shannon I do you think that Lindholm contract was a bad idea for Boston. Idk to me that looks like a gross overpay. That's a lot of term and money.
I think you're right. I like Lindholm but my first impression was that term is way WAY to long.
@@catdee609 I mean the guy was playing 3C in Vancouver. But at the same time Boston needed a center. He's really gonna have to play up to that contract.
I think its risky, but not necessarily a gross overpay. As long as he's able to bounce-back its probably not that bad, maybe a little long.
Nope not at all looking at the rest of the contracts
LA fan here. I like Sean Durzi, but I was scratching my head over the $6 million. I wish we would have kept Matt Roy, but oh well. It's a business. Thanks for the video, THG.
As a Kings fan it feels like we’re just getting worse from last year. Very disappointing
Id put Arvidsson #1. If he stays healthy he will put up 65-70 points with draisatl.
I'm hoping offloading Fabbri and replacing him with Tarasenko is going to be my favorite FA signing in Detroit. Good AAV and term in typical Yzerman fashion. Now we need to get some refinement on the blue line and decide what we're doing in the crease. Yzerman has been a hero around here since I was a kid So let's home this is what gets us to the playoffs.
You a whole new set of Kings magnets to make, bud! 😁
Jeff Skinner is best signing, it will be what the Oilers need to win the cup.
I sure hope so, if he can stay injury free
0 playoff experience jeff skinner😭😭
As a Nashville fan I'm obviously biased but I think the Marchessault deal turns out to be pretty darn good. Even if he slips to 20-25g guys that's still a solid contract especially if the cap continues to rise. I think it kind of balances out the Stamkos one and keeps it from being as rough as it could be.
All fingers crossed for Brännström. He is a great player.
The Durzi deal at 6 seems high but I think it's offset by being 4 years instead of 6-8. I'd rather overpay by a million and have medium term than longer term
Brown in Edmonton was not to bad either.
Shannon, I might be wrong, but you said no one got max term deals when you also stipulated these are only FA contracts for players who switched teams. That means that 6 years is the maximum as the team they're with would've had to have had them since the trade deadline for 8, no? Again, I am probably wrong, only wondering why the explanations would clash.
The Atkinson deal is definitely a top 3. Just phenomenal value. Even if he put 15 goals into his own net you can bury the contract. Dude has been up and down lineups and can play the roles he needs to as a support member.
Ghost deal is absolutely nuts, pissed Anaheim didn't pay 4M for 6 years.
NJ is going to be scary this season if they can muster fewer than 150 mangames lost to injury. Hopefully L. Hughes continues to get the reins so he doesn't regress in development and J. Hughes isn't forced to play with meier when we have seen it not work consistently.
Nashville will finally be less of a snooze fest to watch, stammer likely going to score hatricks every night vs tampa. I'm not dreading watching them this season which is a first.
Surprised you have Ghost that high. If Pesce was unmotivated this past season then New Jersey might have a good deal. I think there is at least a 50/50 chance the Devils get at most only one season of Carolina elite level play from Pesce.
When you gunna make a video where you build your "dream team", cap compliant and all? I'd be intrigued to see your thoughts, as well as your team name.
excellent dive brother i really liked the canucks d core upgrades too. you'll like desharnais
As a Pens fan, I'm incredibly disappointed that Danton Heinen didn't force us to extend him 2 seasons ago, given how good he was the season prior and last season.
Hopefully he fits better in Vancouver than he did here.
I have a feeling that this next season will be Lamiorello's last, as Isles GM atleast. Maybe Chris Lamiorello will be the next manager?
Thoughts on Cam Talbot to my wings?
I know it's still early in the offseason but so far, it feels hard to tell which team might end up last in the standings next year : San Jose and Chicago improved, Utah and Colombus as well, Montreal is mostly betting on their young core taking another step, so that leaves Anaheim maybe?
I don't know how you can't have as your number one the block-buster signing by the Blues of Pierre-Olivier Joseph. Cup #2 is in the bag!
As a Nashville fan I argued against acquiring marchy, stammer and skjei But I have never been as excited for my teams future as I am now! IN GMBT WE TRUST
The Monahan that currently exists is not capable of getting Johnny going.
Honestly shocked Heinen signed for under $3 on a 2 year. This was his chance to get paid. Oilers will miss Foegele, even with the skill they brought in. I'd rather have Marchessault over Monahan for equal contracts. But, Skinner was my favourite contract signing overall.
I personally disagree. He was very frustrating. If he had finish he could score 30, he finally produced stapled to a top 5 center in the league this year, but far too many turnovers at very bad times. Good forechecker with good effort level though. To me he is 3rd liner
