Thanks for having Lukkonen in your honorable mentions Shan, realistically I don't think he's top 12 worthy, but he's definitely in shouting range, he had some good numbers and great performances for us, and in front of a not so special defense at that.

Say what you will about Bob's performance in the overall finals series, but game 1 was one of the best games I've ever seen a goalie play. He had a +5.7 GSAx mark, which is absolutely loopy. When the Panthers started losing he was getting hung out to dry constantly. Not many bad goals against in that series.
At the 0:05 mark, and i can already tell this list is all wrong.
People legit under rate Bob. He's won 2 Vezinas, a Stanley Cup, been to 2 finals in a row, finalist for a 3rd Vezina at 36, and out dueled Ullmark, Swayman, Vasy, and Igor the last 2 playoffs. He's a Hall of Famer and Id take him over other names like Hank and Price.
2 years doesn’t outweigh the rest of the years Vasy and Igor were better. He **might** be a Hall of Famer but to say he’s better than Price or Henrik is crazy

I wouldn't take him over Price or Hank or Vasy. But I think a lot of the perception is linked to his contract.

Henrik Lundqvist is my favorite player of all time. Not getting him a cup will always hurt my soul. Man, I hope Igor gets one with the Rangers.

The henrik one is still heartbreaking til this day wish he would work front office or with the coaching staff and get a Stanley cup it worked with Joe Sakic being a gm and he had already won one in 2001

I hope Igor doesn’t get a Cup, I’m a dirty Devils fan. But even I can’t hate Lundqvist. He sounds like a great guy and he was always a formidable foe.
Thank you for giving Binnington his flowers in this. As a fan it's been upsetting to watch some people blame him partially or say he fell off when really the Blues would be so so much worse without him in net.
I'd only think Prime Hasek would play well in front of that defence.

Ya man I was wondering if he was gonna make Shannon's cut, he had great numbers last year. He probably was quite close, like honorable mention status. Kinda reminds me of Ullmark when we had him, he was pretty good for the defense he had in front of him.

Ullmark GSAx should stay around the same since that stat is supposed to isolate the goalies performance from the team. Ottawa and Boston advanced analytics defensively were pretty similar last season so I'm actually really interested to see how he does but ya I think it's fair to say we should expect to see a slight drop in save percentage and GAA

You may or may not know this but this off-season the Islanders hired Sergei Naumovs, who used to be Sorokin´s goalie coach in the KHL, to be the goalie coach in Bridgeport. (Piero Greco remains as Isles goalie coach). This is important because it gives Naumovs the opportunity to work with Sorokin over the summer, and Sorokin will be doing extensive work with Naumovs in the off-season to try to find his game again. Not saying it´s automatic that this works but it´s a great idea and it gives me, a big Sorokin fan, even more optimism about a return to form. I also think your ranking of Sorokin at #9 is fair and valid as I recognize your high regard for him and I think we both expect him to get back to the top three or four next year. And by the way, good luck to Demko. I love him as a goaltender. I hope he stays healthy all season.

I like your thinking on this, always thought Binnington never gets enough credit in St Louis.
I’d love to see a video on your take or analysis on how the Rangers have been able to go so long with top quality goaltending. Over the last 40 years they went from Vanbiesbruck to Richter with only a couple years off before Lundquist came in and now Shesterkin.
As a rangers fan I have to agree the goaltending is the only reason that makes us stay in it Igor can definitely give us hope I see him wining a cup with them he’s a modern version of henrik they gonna keep him around as long as they can

I like this list, with the exception being Bobrovsky. I think the Panthers team success has wildly impacted the perception of Bobrovsky. Does he win? Yes. However, he has been wildly inconsistent and quite mediocre at times. He certainly belongs on the list but 2 is too high. He isnt exactly a backbone like a Hellebuyck, Demko, or Swayman.

I find it amusing that Binnington has so many being happy that he gets recognition, and nearly as many wanting him removed. I don't like the guy much, and I think he can be way too big of a distraction at times, but there is no denying that he is a top 10 tender. He is 100% outside of the top flight guys, but for sure in that second flight

In my opinion these are the right 12 goalies tbh, I would switch the order a little bit though tbh, also I find evolving hockey is much more reliable than moneypuck for GSAx

I think 5 through 9 could be switched around and 10-12 could be switched around but only within their groups.
Bobrovsky is recency bias imo, he's great but he won't be up for the vezina next year like Demko, Hellebuyck, or Shesterkin.

Yes, this is subjective, but Vasilevskiy is on his way down as an older goalie. You cannot say you would have him instead of Swayman on your team.
The Oettinger is very good in the playoffs thing is very weird. He had one amazing series against Calgary but the next year over 3 rounds he was one of the worst goalies in the playoffs finishing 23rd/24 goalies in GSAx and the only guy ahead of him that he was even close to was Skinner. I'm glad someone is finally not overrating the hell out of him though.
I agree. Otter's playoff stats are right in line with his regular season stats if you remove that 1 series that he 'stole'. I'm a big fan of Otter but even though I'm bias the stats just don't back up the playoff reputation.
Jake vs Stwie ? I'll take Jake all day, everyday. Effort, ability and consistency matter and little stewie just ain't that guy. He had one exceptional game in the finals and honestly I'm surprised he wasn't tested after the game for drugs. He was a complete slouch night after night, then BOOM best game of his life, then back to letting everything in again. An abomination

Henrik lundqvist is still the most what if heartbreaking goalie for us ranger fans that’s one player out of all rangers I seen growing up deserved it Igor definitely has given the rangers much hope if he can win the cup the goalie torch of liberty has to passed to Igor he can definitely take us there 🔥🔵🔴
I hope that if Demko is lower on the list specifically because of repeat injuries, then when the defence rankings come out Makar should fall a little as well for the same reason.
Makar is super overrated. Awful in his own zone, as a defenseman that's kind of your one job. Talk about his offense when he gets converted to a forward but until then, there's no way he should be on any "top defenseman" list. I don't even think he's the best defenseman on the Aves.
I have one issue with Goals Agaisnt Above Expected as a stat and it may be that I don’t fully understand stand it. But it’s that it’s solely based on the expectation of what that goalie should be playing at in terms of skill and ability based on the team that’s in front of them.
I dont like the stat much but i think its still better than a lot of others. Like everything you have to take it in context.
For how it works, pretend that every really good scoring chance has a 50% chance of going it (doesnt matter who shoots it or who the goalie is). Then if it that scoring chance is a save, add .5 goals saved above expected to the goalie, and subtract .5 goals scored above expected to the shooter.
The real percentage and amount added or taken away depends on how good the scoring chance is.
Thats my interpretation of it, i might be wrong, idk
Moneypuck GSAX is a good starting point, but it's worth mentioning that by Clearsight Analytics end of the year top 5's (our best glimpse into private data numbers) there's some major shifts here. Hellebuyck goes from 33 GSAX to 16.64 by CSA's numbers (2nd best in the league) while Markström shoots up to 26.03 GSAX, leading the league last season. Demko is also very justified, he was 3rd by CSA's numbers with 15.12, ahead of Hill (14.33) and Binnington (13.94).
Overall it's a good and respectable list, the only changes i'd make are: I'd drop Bob and Vasi a bit. They were good, but not for their rankings IMO. Bump up Demko and Swayman.
As someone who uses your channel to keep me up to date on most things, I don't really have the time to delve deeper and therefore don't know what the advanced stats represent. It would be great to always get a little one line explanation. For example, goals above expected... What is expected? Is it based on former stats for the individual, expected goals by an opposing team based on their shot percentage, or just simply a base line for all goalies?
Here just to make sure Binner was included. The funny thing about the people who don’t like his attitude (and I don’t expect non STL fans to get this, since even the broadcasters don’t), he’s basically admitted that his “antics” are planned. He didn’t really have any moments last season (unless you count his defending a young D who was getting mauled nearby), and it’s almost always been when his team is down and he’s just trying to fire them up.
Glad to see Binner get some love. He's a really good goalie and people don't want to see it because they don't like him.

If Igor played the first half of the season like he did the second half, he could very well have won the Vezina instead of Helly despite the godlike season for him. His stats in the first half were that bad.
The only thing I disagree with you on is putting Demko ahead of Swayman. Otherwise great list.
Big questions around Bennington being top 15, let alone 8th overall
It’s Binnington, not Bennington. There are no E’s in Binnington.
And, absolutely, he should be in the top 10. He was instrumental in winning the Stanley Cup in 2019. He had a great season in 2020 before COVID shut it down. He almost stole the series against Colorado in the ‘22 playoffs until Kadri crashed into him and took him out. Yes, he had a down year in 22-23, but was outstanding in 23-24, even though he has a crappy D-corp in front of him.
@@OldRustySteele you talk a lot about the past. This is about ranking top goalies now for 2024/2025. Binnington with an "I" is still not top 10 tender in the league. He needs a lot more recent success than 1 outstanding playoffs appearamce 5 years to place him amongst top 10 in the league right now.
@@MrPhilYelle The PRESENT is the 2023-2024 season, and Binnington was superb behind a shitty defense (Immobile, tiny Torey Krug and others). Top 10 goalie. I trust my own eyes and THG’s a lot more than yours. But it’s good having a spirited discussion with ya’! Gotta run…Have a great day.

Gregoriev wasn't inconsistent imo. His Defense slacked too often and King George gets egg on His face. Sakic lets Rodriguez go and pow‼️ Colorado is weak at center and DNVR stays busy pointing fingers without scrutinizing Sakic.

Pretty good list, I would never have hellebyuck above vasilevsky.... ever, but hes coming back from injury. I think you can shuffle Bob, Vasi and Shesterkin depending on the day. The best list is who the NHL players think is the best goalie and it was by a mile... Vasi.

The only example I need to give here to prove otherwise is ...... Carolina...... you saw them for yourself. Not the best defense in the league, but very respectable, their goalie however, couldn't stop a beach ball. 🤣
Rangers defense didn't impress me at all in the playoffs, yet Igor still did what he was destined to do. Put Igor on Carolina and I guarantee the whole thing looks different.

He actually was pretty solid in aXG given the sorts of starts he had to deal with (watching him beat the Avs at home was fun to watch). He could get better too, especially if the blue line develops and doesn't get fucked with injuries
