How to Make an Ellipse Template Jig / Oval Template Jig
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 авг 2018
- In this woodworking video, I show you how to make a jig and draws ellipses.
Unlike circles, ovals and ellipses can be a challenge to draw, are easy with an ellipse template jig like this one, for things like door and window openings, oval table tops or picture frames and you can even use the jig for making arcs and other woodworking design works.

Thanks God you're always there Colin.. Seriously you're the one.

Yess 👍👍
Neat action on that little beauty of a jig. 👍
Is your watch made of wood? Looks awesome. 👌
You're Welcome, Bill! Yes, It's wood. I'll talk about it more in a future video.
Nice 👍
Thank You!
You are a genius
Thank you for sharing, these highly skilled and advanced wood working skill.
I am not a wood worker but enjoy watching your videos, from UK.
Long may it last!
Looks like I found this week ends shop project. Prolly make two - one for small ovals & one for larger ovals...
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting,
Thank You!
very nice colin
Thank you!
Hey, wich distance did you selected for the holes ?
I make same but small version for my "like Dremel" mini engraver/router.
And little question - Colin, I seen you have wooden watch on your left hand?
BE CAREFUL with the wooden watch. The links are quite fragile. I have one and have caught the band and broken it twice. Don't wear it in the workshop. But they are beautiful. Nice Jig and video as always.
Great little jig Colin! Question: Will that also work making circles? Or do you need to tweak it a bit? Thanks........... :)
A circle has only one radius. This is a maximum and minimum radius with variation in between. The bar could be used to make circles just pick the proper pin for the center and not use the slotted board.
Circles can actually make with common shop tools Steve. I have an example here: ruclips.net/video/wqRVFL5wjhY/видео.html
I can look at doing more circle examples in a future video.
I'm waiting to see how you made the wooden watch Colin.
I won't lie, I bought it ... the price was right. I'll talk more about it in a future video
I figured as much looks quite good on screen though :) :)
In fact called a Trammel of Archimedes, for drawing ellipses... or an interesting toy or fidget spinner if you search...
You can do the same thing with a loop of string and a couple of nails ;0)
Not as elegant but does the job, and you can use a router with that trick too (with a bit of care)
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
I was shown this years ago by the guy that taxidermied my bass. He mounts them on perfect ellipses.
Yeah that's how i do it.
That's how the taxidermus did it when he mounted my bass.
You could point out that the distances from the pencil to the pivot bolts are A) 1/2 the overall desired length of the ellipse and 1/2 the desired width the other.
Hi Colin 👍
Thanks for watching!
colin can you tell me the dimension of the board you used,,,,i need to make a oval about 15x28
Hello,
You ave a wood watch?
It's very beautiful.
J'adore ce que vous faites.
Un Français....
Yes, I have a wood watch. I'll talk more about in a future video. Thanks for watching!
Ok, Thank you very much!
It wasn't until I was making an exterior door from white oak and made a similar jig for the glass did I realize ovals aren't necessarily ellipses. [My glass happened to be a 'squashed ellipse'.]
I have just worked out that the length of the semi-major axis of the ellipse is the distance between the pen and the farthest bolt (on a slider).
The length of the semi-minor axis is the distance between the pen and the nearest bolt.
The total length of the ellipse is twice the semi-major axis; the total width is twice the semi-minor axis.
What is the material your using. Whats it called and where do I get it?
It's just a scrap piece of laminated wood. Any piece of laminated wood of the right thickness will work.
Look for an Arabian guy around under ''geometric forms with a router'' you'll like it too . :)
It would have been useful to have shown how the shape changes with a change in the location of the pins. The size has to do with the location of the marker on the arm.. It is all relative.
Thanks for the input, Roy. Maybe I'll do it in the future video.
And mount a router...
No dado head or rebate cutters allowed in europe
I didn't know that.
What they dont know dosen't hurt them. Get er done. Merica!
There is a much simpler way to do ovals/ ellipses. All you need is 2 nails and a piece of string
String method is not as accurate as this one..string sometimes extends little due to more tension by hand.
you are right string method is not correct method for accuracy
8:04 "You can use them for openings for windows" ...
I note that hobbits all have round doors and windows. Would they, perhaps, like a variation of _elliptical_ doors and windows? Are hobbits keen to experiment a bit, or are they too conservative in their views and would they regard oval doors and windows as too avant-garde?
you never mentioned the fact that your jig you made for making ovals was invented by Leanardo Da Vinci. Give credit where credits due man!
My understanding is this is a Chinese invention that predates da Vinci. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant!
Thank You!
Nice
