My 120 v6 has 250 klms on her and still runs like a dream . Oil changes every 5000 klm ,regular coolant changes . Has new Dobinsons suspension all round . Just replaced lower control arms . She’s not going anywhere. And thanks to you and all the great information you give us prado owners it makes it so much easier to do the majority of the work ourselves. Cheers mate..

What's your consumption on the Highway? I'm thinking buying V6 they are cheaper and easy to maintain. I dont do more than 12-15k year. I think I'll have problem with diesel with short trips...

Ive had my GXL desel Prado since new 2005 and its still going strong. 415,000 kms. Done about 100,000 kms off road and still am amazed where they will go if you go easily and carefully. A bit too much plastic though but overall a good vehicle. Oil change every 5,000 kms and filters replaced when scheduled. Consistently get 11km per litre. Run my BF Goodrich A/Ts at 40psi and get good mileage from them. Lacks a bit of punch when towing heavy loads. Great all round versatile and capable vehicle and looking to keep Betsy for years to come. Should see me out!!!

my opinion , get house paid for, get your kids educated for their future and set yourself up. Cars are not an asset, they are a liability. Too many times i see people going into debt they cannot afford, will their priorities of family suffer. You don't need the latest of everything cause you want to keep up with the Jones. Older cars are best for those off road adventures without breaking the budget and having others suffer for your greed.

  • @Baggmanau
    @Baggmanau 3 года назад +6

I agree with the comments of others although my 120 is up to "only" 250,000 - doesn't burn any oil at all. It rattles over rough roads like any other car but not once it's back on the bitumen. The indicator and wiper controls, hand brake and steering all feel as-new. (Lower control arm bushes already done). Many cars that feel old and sloppy just need new shocks and maybe springs. My car has an auto transmission oil cooler (modification) and has pulled a 2 tonne caravan over man thousands of kilometers trouble-free. Not all 4WDs will fare as well with heavy towing. Replace the auto fluid every 50,000 or so and the gearbox will have a good chance of lasting as long as the engine.

I picked up a stock 1kz prado from a grandma in country NSW with 230k on the clock--it was serviced every 5k for its whole life and garaged. The car just ticked over the 300K mark with no issues. I almost sold it for something else but decided it had never let me down and just seemed like it would keep going. I gave the car a nice birthday with new injectors, an intake manifold clean, new radiator, timing belt/water pump, tensioners, bearings, and a few other bits. Engine is purring and ready for another 300K. I've added in a bull bar, snorkel, drawers, a 1.5 inch lift and new control arms over the journey. Love it.

Just to reinforce what you are saying about buying Prado's with higher Km's. I bought my 2012 150 GXL in October 2018 and it had 415,000 km's on it. It has full service history and drives like a new car. It has just turned over to 430,000 km's. New lower control arms just fitted due to fitting a lift kit and 1 cam bolt was seized causing issues with the bushes. Oil changes ever 5000 km's. EGR Valve just cleaned and is now like new.
I'll be running this until I get bored with it or I can't drive any more. I'll just do the maintenance, take care of it and fully expect to see it clock up a million km's.

I bought my Prado, a 10/08 manufactured 120 1kdf, second hand with 110 thousand on the clock, the rear door hinges had been repaired as by Toyota, it was a x Qfleet vehicle, when ordered by Qfleet, it had a full suspension upgrade, factory bullbar, snorkel and towbar fitted, after seeing your views on them, it's made me feel so good I did, with your vote of confidence and expertise. I've replaced left front drive line boots, duel tank connector hose, timing belt, alternator, fan belt, next after watching your very informative post's, I'll be doing the injectors and seals, I now have 170 thousand on it and loving it.

Made a new front grill and so on and so on. Taking care of it and it takes care of me. Maybe I will sell it never. Just thinking of converting it to electric as our diesel costs over 2,20€ now.

Interesting topic this one. We are waiting for a 2015 Kakadu to be shipped from SA to Vic (got it at a great price) that is just shy of 200k km's. We were happy with the service history. But the main reason I am not worried about the km's is I have a 2001 V6 Camry (manual touring, of course, lol) who I won't be selling, that has clocked in 440,000 km's, had her since 160,000 km's and other than the A/C compressor (I run the A/C all the time) and standard maintenance, runs like a dream, still getting the same fuel economy I did when I got her etc. Km's on a well looked after car isn't a big of an issue, it's mainly those that have been poorly looked after.

My 2007 120 is still going strong 16 years and 550,000 kms. With the way the government is going I am going to keep this Prado going until the government puts me off the road. By then we should have an idea what way the vehicle power plants are going to go, I doubt Lithium will play a role in batteries. But more importantly my Prado doesn't have a load of so called safety features, which I consider down right dangerous, like my wife's new Mazda 3 that slams on the brakes randomly cause it thinks there is some kind of emergency about to happen. I reckon I might even put a new engine in it when this one dies, that's if the government doesn't put diesels off the road by then. Thanks to a rampaging Emu I now have a new bullbar, fog lights, spotlights and light bar as well as a new set of headlights. 🤣

Sounds great that problem with the Mazda not uncommon that’s what all these stupid radar cruise control vehicles do but that’s not as bad as automatically putting it self into park position like the 300 series did the other day all the pieces went flying off into the bush imagine you spend $150,000 and your holiday ended with that disaster wise decision like I said to many people stick with the last of the best sit tight and see what happens. Spend some money on it look after it and say thank you to the emu.

Hi Anthony, Thank you for the great videos full of information.
Your videos have been a great help with narrowing my search and finding the right car for me and my needs and help me out immensely.
I've been looking at buying a 4x4 for a while now and done heaps of research.
I have a question for you and I apologise if you have already covered it one of your previous videos.
In your opinion, am I better off getting a second hand / used 150 Prado 2013-2015 (last of the 1KD's) or a brand new 2020/2021 150 Prado 1GD update?
If second hand how many km's should I be looking at?
I currently drive a 2010 Subaru forester XT and have found that we have reached its limits and would like to move into a true 4x4 to tour off road with the young family.
Upgrading to a Prado from the Forester is going to be a long term investment and we are planning on keeping the car for at least 10 years.
I love the look and tech available in the new Prado but from what I understand the reliability is much better on the 1KD engine over the 1GD engine. My understanding from your videos is that the transmission runs very hot with the 1GD v's the 1KD and this has a potential to have issues in future years.
We plan to have this car as a daily driver being the family bus during the week hence the available safety tech and 7 seats are desirable and then hit the open roads on the weekends to go bush.
We have a 2015 corolla (runabout) that we use without the kids, and is a great little car and serves us well.
Have you had a chance to test drive the new Prado with the minor upgrade to the 1GD engine and compared it to your 1KD and 1GD cars?
I look forward to receiving your response.
    Regards,
    Thanasi
    (Future Prado 150 owner)

With so many motor, transmissions types, all the electronic upgrades, traction control, stability control, and the list goes on and on. I will be buying a lux very soon, at first I thought maybe 2012/ 2013 ( best ever generations) new auto’s etc.
But then I find the 2015 lux, has all the whizz bang electronics that make you an expert four wheeler. So what is the best generation, the best motor, best transmission, the best electronic’s you can’t live without! It’s a mine field, filled with generations of hilux’s , all worthy of owning, and to suit everyone’s needs and affordability. Tell me which is your dream hilux, and why you picked it!

The faster you go the more you use economy is under 100 km an hour I’m off and traveling faster than this I think it adds about a liter per hundred kilometers for every 10 km over 100
