The Toyota Landcruiser is famous all over the world for being as tough as old boots. I've tracked down an unloved example to see if they're any good. In the UK it's simply called the LandCruiser, but in other parts of the world, this model is called the Prado. Thank you to the 4,763 people who commented and made me aware of this!

2 Land Rovers, one 28000km, 3 oil leaks, the other 58000km, 6 oil leaks, electric problems and engine problem. 1 Land Cruiser, 185000km, 1 bulb replaced (I think).
It's time to dump the shit box and try the Toyota, It just won't die!
Mate here in Australia, most serious offroading enthusiasts I've seen have Landcruisers, or Nissans, they stick with Japanese trucks for the most part. If they can tame the outback then they can tame the world...

Ultra reliable Land Cruiser, ours was a 2005, LC3.
Bought with 198000 miles.
It pulled our 7 meter caravan around every country in Europe for 4 years.
Eventually (regrettably) sold it, fault free with 287000 miles.
Best vehicle we ever owned.

You are very spot on with your review, which is based on some short term experience with it. Which is hard, many people would struggle to realize how incredibly amazing that vehicle is in such short taste of it.
I still have mine, bought new 2005 LC (different package names here, but using your levels it appears to be an LC4) D-4D. It rolled over 1 million km's this summer.
Currently sitting at 1,014,000 km give or take. And I'll give a 'short' rundown on the essential:
- Engine wise: Valve covers have never been taken off, never leaked, why bother. Turbo is original. Every radiator - original. Oil, fuel, and steering pumps - original. The whole fuel system in fact has only had it's injectors replaced once @~400k km's. Mostly everything in that engine bay, except consumables of course, has never been changed. Had a new alternator as a whole oem unit put in fairly recently. Got a new steering rack ~600k km's. It's had a brake master-cylinder replacement at 1 point. Uhm, not much more comes to mind. A/C original - Working good. Virtually every hose is original as well, apart from the high pressure side of the steering rack, which gave before the rack did, and was not cheap!
Of course everything has always been serviced on time, and every fluid has been changed with oem within strict mileage. Oil changes 10k or less. Every filter always with oem. Not a single leak anywhere. Driveshaft... I shit you not, the driveshaft is on it's original joints. Being factory fitted with zerk oil ports, and being always greased at every few oil changes, the driveshaft has freaking 1 million kilometers on it and is all original. No play, no vibrations. In fact, the whole vehicle drives as smooth as butter.
- Transmission: Rebuilt at 900k. After literally letting it "die on its own first" and keeping it for nearly 100k km's worth of some hard punching between gearchanges, occasional slippage and other bugs it developed at around 800k - but it would still not die, it just got too annoying. And for everything I'm describing keep in mind that the vehicle has always been driven hard, basically it's entire lifetime, be it on the road, hauling, or offroading-which it has done a lot of, extremely capable on the hard stuff (I optioned it with the rear diff lock instead of the LSD).
- Interior and misc: Everything on the inside, except the seats which got swapped out for the cloth version long ago after the leather got cracked (the cloth is actually amazing, and will outlast everything) is in EXCEPTIONAL condition. Nothing is damaged, scratched, let alone broken or non-working. No rattles, no squeaks, absolutely smooth driving experience. Dash is not cracked (plenty do, but I guess it's due to poor maintenance/cleaning or sun damage). There is not a single button that is faded or disintegrated like some cars would at 100k. Obviously the steering wheel has been redone. Twice. But you get the picture.
- And here is where you are spot on too. The only troubled area for this tank - the rust. No body rust, although there is some - ON THE INTERIOR body panels around the rear wheel arches for some reason, but not underneath. But the frame is suffering at this point. It's time to be pulled and completely redone, and it will be fine. But still, they DO rust.
There's much more to say, but nobody would read, so that's my take-away on the BEST vehicle on the planet. Been in the family for the glorious 17 years now, and it will, I imagine, never leave.

Thank you for this. I've just copied your comment for reference. I just purchased, and will, in a few days, be collecting a 2007 VX (I don't know what that would be in LC) with 325k on the clock, and as far as I could see on inspection, everything was in order. I was somewhat suspicious thinking the previous owner had done some retouches. It sounds like these machines are virtually indestructible, as long as you play your part and service them on time.
I am not an expert in off roaders but I hired a Land Cruiser Prado in Oman recently and did some proper off roading, well proper for me at least.....It was amazingly capable, did things that I couldn't believe. I got stuck once, in deep sand, but that was because I had no idea what I was doing.

Great and honest review, I'm on my fifth (19 reg) Landcruiser 80,000 on the clock 12 years of trouble free motoring and 3 of them had 350,000 never a penny spent outside of regular engine brakes tyres servicing. My livelihood deepens on these indestructible cars. As long as they make them, I'll keep buying them.

Beats Range Rover any day. Had a range rover 2009...it was a money pit and extremely thirsty.
I have EXACTLY the same car, bought new in 2003 and now with 460.000km on the clock. A couple of years ago I had to buy a Hybrid CR-V to be able to access the cities in which Euro3 diesel are not allowed here in Italy, but I decided to keep the LC for as long as it lasts... which is probably longer than me! In 18 years of ownership (with regular servicing, though) I had no issues at all, only in the last few months I had to replace the alternator and one air spring. Plans for the future include more tough off road and a long trip to the Pamir Highway, as soon as Covid allows....

Good to see the old Landcruiser still running and I had a work colleague bought one from new and swore by it, so much so he drove it from Aberdeen to Newcastle every Sunday/Monday morning for work, never maintained it , never even washed it and like oyu said - it just did the job he bought it for Work!!
I love your videos. I'm from South Africa and we have lots of Land Rovers and Cruisers. Here the Cruisers thrive, being very suited to the general conditions. When age and neglect settle in, Land Rovers tend to really struggle. Over here it's not supply and demand that determines the used vehicle price, but the reputation for reliability. Of course we also don't have such an issue with rust,which favours the Japanese...

Went on a game drive in limpopo with our 2007 prado and my uncles x5, within 6 minutes he got stuck, prado just ploughed through tho
Lets be honest though. Land Rovers are a money pit plagued by electrical gremlins, suspension issues (air struts, air compressor, height sensors, random error codes linked to ABS and speed sensors) Doesn't matter if you only drive an LR around the city, they are unreliable on and off-road. Ive owned an LR3 and 2 RR Vogues L322. Never again. Owned an LC120, 1 x LC100, 1 x LC200 and went back to buying an LX470 (best car ever, period) They look good but LR's and RR's are junk.

We used these in the Police back in early 2000s, Central Motorway Police Group in the Midlands. Initially the Colorado 4.0 petrol but they were very heavy on fuel. On a busy day you'd use 2 tankfuls Moved onto the 3.0 diesels. Great for towing, even getting 38 ton artics moving.
Absolutely bullet proof. Still going strong with 250,000 miles on the clock.

I've got a friend whose prado is nearing the half million mark. Abused like nothing but still goes strong! This is the manual diesel version though.

Mine is almost hitting 700k, bought it way back then, I think only that has broken so far was right light, and I had to replace the engine fuel, as the service guy done it wrong. Best for farmers

Have a 2006 landcruiser with 290000 miles on it . And still drives great.
Now you get how I feel about my ‘06 Tundra 4x4. Just took it on a 1600 mile road trip which involved wild camping near the Grand Canyon. Odometer now reads 171,248 miles. Not a single warning light the whole trip. Not a single hiccup. Just keeps on going and going and going. Legendary vehicles.
I've never driven a Tundra, but I like them. They're huge!
High Peak Autos ironically nowhere near as big as some trucks in the US! A Ford F-350 literally dwarfs it 😂
I like your reviews, they're honest and entertaining. I recently borrowed exactly this type of Landcruiser from a friend to haul a big trailer for a job. Same story: it was old, filthy, barely maintained, in short unloved....and after just 10 minutes behind the wheel I was absolutely loving it. It hauled a 2000+ kg trailer like it was nothing. Surprisingly underneath the thick layer of dust every gadget worked, including the air suspension and the diff lock which I'm sure never sees use. Very comfortable on bumpy roads, low noise on the highway. Nippy enough round town, that diesel and automatic just do the job. The handling is as you'd expect, but then again you're sitting high and far away from the peasants so there's never a need to rush and nobody's going to overlook a Landcruiser anyway. It makes exactly zero sense to own one here in the Netherlands unless you need it for work, the road tax alone would make you cry....but I dreaded handing back the keys to get back in my sensible economical middle class wagon. Come to think of it: my own car makes me feel at home. The Landcruiser made me feel like going on an adventure.

My friend had a landcruiser same as this and in 15 years he NEVER had any issues at all. Best car ever.
And that was just the little Landcruiser, known as the Prado here in Oz. I've been driving them for decades in the outback and yes, they are as good as unbreakable.

@@HighPeakAutos ..... It's big, and so is the price! FYI .... The tray-back D-4D "Hilux" has been the mainstay of the mining industry here for donkey's years, but is now apparently being seriously challenged by Ford's "Ranger".
@@beaugunn2632 And they are both having problems. Toyota has stuffed the design of the Hilux DPF, so they keep failing even when they've been replaced. And the less said about Rangers catching fire the better

I am an Australian and have the same car for 16 years, and it never missed a bit. I had Merc, BMW, Volvo, and other European cars. They didn't last half the years as my Parado. It is the best car I ever had and I will probably drive it until I died. It is fuel efficient, comfortable and most importantly, it has 180Lt tank and 5 levels of air suspension settings. It is so reliable that even the new ones can't match. If you ever been to the desert or rugged country, you will know which car will bring you home.
The Prado is a beauty! Mostly 3.0 Diesels for sale in my region but there are some V6 and even V8. Literally just 2 of each
Had a 2005 model that I took to every corner of remote outback in Australia. It had a very hard life towing a 2 tonne camper. 350,000km and one oil seal replacement on the transfer case. Up until recently, all Toyota Lancruiser Prados that were sold in Australia had 180 litre fuel capacity. The latest models have 150 litres of fuel but the spare wheel is mounted on the rear door to allow for the extra fuel tank. You can now choose to have an 87 litre tank with the spare wheel under the rear of the car.
There are very few LR Discos in the outback but when you do happen to see one, they are more often than not on the back of a rescue flat top truck being taken for repairs (Along with JEEPS). Yep the Disco's are very comfortable and beautifully appointed but you cannot risk being too far from a garage. Getting your car recovered from some of our desert adventures can cost upward of $20,000 so the only sensible choice is usually a Toyota.
I've got an 04 Prado Diesel....the older pre-common rail one, GX ex fleet I bought at auction. I chucked $2k at a budget off road ready makeover and the things awesome, goes anywhere and reliable as old boots.

I personally bought one of these a few years ago, petrol version as we don't have the diesel here. Had 160K kms on the clock and owned by a local construction company so wasn't in best of condition. Kept a couple of years and not a single issue. In low range dragged an old mid 90s Bentley with seized brakes which freed them off nicely! Sold on for 3 times what I paid for it! Will watch the Q7 video soon, owned a V8 and Audi's don't do well in a sub tropical climate.
On my second one - last one I had for 12 years - they are immortal.

I comment on the land lover post so i have to comment on this one too, simply because while i was having land rover's my father had one of this . I think it was a 2005-2006 model, anyway long time ago. Not a fast car , but always giving you a vacantion feeling and most important 100000 km and not a single bulb broken. Compared with the land rover's it was just unbelievable .
And that is why I will always drive TOYOTAS!!! 🙂
My brother-in-law who had a secondhand car business, amongst other businesses, lived at the top of a steep and windy driveway and used to keep a spare old land cruiser at home to use over the winter months. He used to lend it to family and friends frequently and it took a lot of abuse. On a couple of occasions I used it to drive around the narrow, bumpy and rough little backroads around rural Donegal in Ireland and it was as sure footed as a mountain goat and incredibly reliable. It was never phased by bumps, roughs surfaces, tight turns, steep roads or hollows, and was much more fuel efficient than I thought possible for such a big beast. I confess to, like you, being really pleasantly surprised. Undoubtedly, if you live somewhere with or near challenging surfaces or where it’s pretty icy in wintertime it’s a great choice. Thanks for another excellent, honest and unbiased review!

Ive had a LandCruiser (PRADO here in Australia) for 6 years, and I have to be honest, these are an absolute dream to own. They are agricultural and bland, but they are bulletrpoof, and literally unbreakable. With 8 seats (!!!) and all with 3-point seat belts, - if you get he right model, - you have something that can carry more people than a Disco, and pull the same hitch loads as well ! Get the auto, not the manual...its just easier to drive. and a Diesel is WAYYY more economical !

Great review and thanks for being honest. Had a few discovery landrovers and found them comfortable but once you put them to work trouble starts. I now use a 1998 landcruiser for work and I have this one for over 6 years and it costs little to Notting to put it through a doe test every year. It pulls a woodchipper and a trailer every day plus it's offroad a lot.

I just got a 07 LC5. Compared to my 2012 Jaguar XF I was expecting a massive downgrade in terms of the infotainment system. Surprisingly, even though primative the Land Cruisers system is really snappy and fast. I don't get any lag, and the GPS though dated Works smoothly. The Jag is super lagy and slow!

My 1995 KZJ70 Landcruiser done almost 313000 miles. I had to rebuild the engine at 211000 miles because the previous owner never serviced it.

Excellent video once again! Land Cruisers are great, driven tens of them. Good that you mentioned the issue of corrosion. In Finland, if you are looking for a Japanese car, rust is one of the first things you have to look out for. They don’t tolerate well the harsh winters and salt on the roads. Mazdas are especially prone for corrosion. Then on other side of the spectrum is Audi from where it’s difficult to spot rust even if it was produced beginning of the 90s. Don’t know if MB has improved but they used to rust easily.
160k miles only?? Come to Kenya, this beasts still be driving fiiine at 400k. And there resale value is so high compared to a 2014 rangerover.

Come to Central America (Guatemala) and you'll find many specimens of this cabiler (+ Toyota's of all kind) with 800k + miles...🤔🧐💯
I did some work with the UN in Cambodia in 1994, and pretty much every 4x4 was Japanese.. Mitsubishi Shoguns, the old Nissan Patrol(the super square one) and Landcruisers... Mostly the amazon ones.. Unstoppable they were... Loved driving it :)
Well, I can imagine they (the Japanese ) have a better dealer network & warranty in S.E Asia than Range Rover, LoL.

After 4 Discovery's I bought a LandCruiser Prado sight unseen online at Auction with 300,000 km and 15 years old. Best punt I ever had. This car was immaculate with pristine service records for $8 grand AUD. 12 months on and this thing has had an off road makeover and taken us to so many iconic places in Australia without a single issue or let down ever. It is also one the most capable 4wds I've owned and I've owned....a lot.

That Prado is really well specced. Rear seat entertainment system, wood inlays, heated+ventilated seats. Save it for your future kids.
Although the rear seat entertainment screen is dated now with kids having tablets or smartphones to keep themselves entertained..

In '92, Toyota let me take one to Spain and we drove it from the north west coast to south east coast and back again after our hols - faultless - loved it and was even more shocked that the middle of Spain is desert. Somewhat alarming and made me seriously consider the vehicle's reliability with a young son on board - turns out no need to worry one bit. But this was a brand new car at the time, so.........
Nice review! Great cars bit expensive in the UK but they are worth the money especially if living in the countryside.
Had x5,Range Rovers,and this is ones are the cheapest to maintain.
When the Land Cruiser 90 (named Colorado ) was first imported by TGB to the UK (1996) Land Rover borrowed one and could not get over how good it was -especially the 3.0 D4D engine. It took the Discovery a long while to catch up.
My father used to own one of these. It was wonderful and it had over 500k kilometers on it when he decided to cell it. The sideways opening trunk door is great for dogs, as you won't need to be afraid of cutting their tails off.

Toyota Land Cruiser is the preferred vehicle by the United Nations. Now that speaks volumes about its reliability.
More like dispensible .
Perhaps Range Rover don’t offer them (UN) enough in terms of warranty & dealer network to the places they go, not to mention the fleet discounts, LoL..

That cruiser looks pretty clean to me. Come to Ireland where almost every farmer owns one and you will find much newer totally trashed examples but they still seem to keep going.

Ive found myself here because I'm currently shopping around for this exact model here in Kenya, and the least priced I'm getting for 2004, 2005 models are upwards of 12,000 pounds. And they are all in mint condition, its 2021, that's almost 17 years of running in Japan or UK then running in Kenya! They simply don't die!
As long as you do the standard stuff like oil changes you can double that mileage without breaking a sweat.
Good video! One minor anorak point - the Cruisers of this era (Amazon, and I assume this one too) don't have "air suspension" like the Land Rovers. It's hydraulic, combined with conventional springs. It can fail but is, as these things go, a pretty good system. If it does fail, you can probably nurse yourself home on the normal springs - the vehicle will be low but won't be totally slammed like a failed full air suspension setup :)

In Australia. 2008 120 Prado GLX diesel auto with 226000km. Apart from the normal service consumables, all I have had to replaced is: a water pump, the alternator sprag clutch, a refrigerate top up and as precaution the timing belt tension bearing. Regularly driven off road.

I had 2 and to be honest the car being a Toyota is just too reliable.
The cracks in dash is a must.
I now drive a lr3 petrol 4.0l, the boxy look is out of this world, like the terrain response as well as the height controls.
But just why can't Land Rover just make their cars as reliable as the Toyotas.
So who came first? Landrover of course...but why let these hue and cry go on for this long...it's about time Landrover responded accordingly.

Things to watch out for injector seal goes on them and then the engine oil gets thick and chokes the oil pick up inside the engine, they did bring out new seals to solve the problem. 4.0 petrol was bomb proof
100% spot on. I have 1 since 2005 never a days bother with it. Got injectors and seals done on warranty by Toyota even after the warranty time was up. First class service by Toyota. Love it.

@@cryptocrusader6078 I payed mine 4.0 V6 14.5k euro in Switzerland model 2005 with 213.000km. A highest spec with digital compas, barometer, navigation and leather seats air suspension etc... in 3-4 years it is going to worth same or even a little bit more.
Enjoying the reviews. Makes me glad I am not alone. I have a 1993 Toyota surf and had it 10 years, the smaller land cruisers, prado's etc are based on the surf. I have other cars but I love my surf, it trundles on. Gets serviced every year, 3 litre does 28 mpg, well maintained and just rugged. Here is the thing, I have always wanted a Land Rover, I'm a British masochist. I see them , want one then get into my comfy surf and then think here I am, auto 3 litre, switchable 4wd, freewheel hubs, air con that really works and I have never regassed. Why would I want a draughty, under powered, sluggish tin can, still do though, go figure. Anyway another of my loves is my mercedes w126 so spend a day in one of those barges, lots of elegant fun.
Just a couple of details on that comment. The Surf only shared parts with the J70 and J90 Prados [Transmission and suspension, respectively]. It's a common misconception that either is based on the other entirely, particularly the modern iterations of them.
That said, fantastic vehicles. I've had a '99 Prado in my family for almost the entirety of the past 20 years. Sold it a couple of years ago when I upgraded to a '17 Lexus GX. And if I can get away with it, I'm going to be driving this thing for another 20 years yet.
As for the Rover, think of it this way: Land Rover's owned and built by TATA these days. Is it really still an English vehicle if the only English part about it is the British Racing Green badge on the car's grill? :P
Your comment about reliability of cars and regular maintenance is spot on.
I think so. I'm only basing that on the 100's of cars I've bought and sold
@@HighPeakAutos I drive Land Rover and Range Rovers. Never had a problem aside from wear and tear. When I was in Bosnia during the 1992 war UNPROFOR had a fleet of Land Rover Discoverys. And we had a Range Rover that took us through conflict with no problems. To many armchair critics out there.
Toyota's are pretty hard to kill. Had a 30 year old sitting for two years, whacked a battery in it and it fired right up! Love it!

I owned a 2009 Landcruiser Prado 120. It was a beast. 8.1 litres to the 100. Water fuel separator and an I drive throttle controller. Good solid car. Never let me down in the bush. Happy to now own a VX 200 2017. Twin turbo V8. Now that’s a BEAST!!

Great cars, those engines and drive train are indestructible as a AK 47.
Although top spec landcruisers are more comparable with the Range rover and G Class benz than the Disco in my opinion
About 20 years ago I owned a Hi Lux and I wouldn't be surprised it is still rocking arround somewhere in the middle east with 50. Cal machine gun mounted on it and people hanging out the windows screaming and shooting their AK 47 empty.

I've got a 2005 LC5, superb vehicle, my third Landcruiser, and had Hilux in between too, started of with a '93 3 litre 70 series, basically the same engine as that 3.0 litre D4D in the motor you tested.
Rust can be an issue, mainly chassis and exposed parts of the sills, but a lot of the problem is because they are so reliable people don't care for them as they should do in our climate, i've gone to serious lengths rustproofing mine, i want it last because there isn't a single new vehicle available normally in the UK made in the last 10 years that i would want to buy, the 120 series does everything we want, stacks of room in the back for doggies too, if it dies i might grey import a mid noughties 70 series and go old school again.
The reason that one you tested was so wallowy is because you have the TEMS adjustable shock absorbers in 'comfort' mode, move the switch to the position between normal and sport (eh? sport you say :-) and the damping will firm up considerably.
Haha its funny the fact its got a 'sport' setting on a car like this, just incase you find yourself on the Nurburgring.. Thanks for your comments - I'll try that next time I get one and see the difference :)

Why is Land cruiser better than the Prado?
Is it because the Land cruiser is built for off road capabilities whilst the Prado is built for Speed purposes?
I've owned a prado and I agree with this comment. The landcruiser is a more comfortable drive and more capable off-road.
I suspect that the fuel economy is better in the prado though.
Either way, I'd drive any of them any day!
My friend has a two door toyota land cruiser prado 2001 model it has over 400,000 km on it, still going strong apart from the passanger sun visor

I love your review - and my heart beats for both Landcruiser and Landrover/Range Rover but we have to admit Toyotas are maybe better built but certainly more reliable - mine is now 19 years - a Landcruiser 100 and I do enjoy it - especially in my environment

Out here in Qatar, the Land Cruiser has built up an unrivalled reputation for durability and reliability. Any competent mechanic can keep these beasts working, even with 200k on the clock and 10+ years service in extreme weather.
Nissan Patrol/Armada come a close second.

Like yourself I like the look of jags and land rovers but can I bring myself to buy one I'm not sure, to me the most important thing about a car is how reliable it is after all we always need to be somewhere and get back and from that point of view the Japanese are hard to beat. A Land rovers ability is immense and jags have an elegance that's hard to match (I'm biased here )because I'm proud British but there you go. Great videos by the way I like the honest warts and all approach I think it helps people make decisions more easily when they spend their hard earned so keep up the good work and thanks for the video's.
