As a long time viewer of the Bonsai Zone I really appreciate the time and attention given to pot selection over the past several seasons. When a tree gets transplanted out of its training or nursery pot into a beautiful bonsai pot it truly starts its journey as a work of art. Thanks, keep growing
I love pomegranates. The colour of the first leafs, the flowers, the bark... I have experienced that it is not possible to keep them warm indoors all year. The "nana" variety on the other hand is growing like crazy indoors for 3 years now.
I got a pomegranate form the local nursery for the only reason that the root base was really cool and gnarly! Straight, boring trunk with no branching that is useful, so I will have to airlayer off the top, but that will give me 2 trees, so wins all round. This one looks much more promising, with that gentle movement and branching low down. (And that pot is beautiful!)
Mine are mostly awake now and growing strong. Still a few sleepyheads still dormant. Great planting! That pot will look great with that tree as it develops. Even in fall colours!
Nice pot! I'm pleased to hear your comment of pot selection being personal. Great tree too. Thank you for sharing. How are you liking that american bonsai soil pick?
I had a very unfortunate experience with chopping some of the tap root off on one of the fruit plants(I don't know which plant but it had a 5 inch stem and almost 8-10 inch long tap root).. Since the plant had sprouted randomly and had grown into a good looking one, I decided to report it in a nicer pot and let it grow properly.. The new pot was a smaller one, as compared to the plant's previous home(a half broken plastic bucket, and random sticky soil) and the root wouldn't fit.. So I chopped the tap root into half(ensuring that the upper part had some root hair that could sustain the plant) But a week later, the plant died out.. I've been afraid of chopping(or even pruning) any tap root since that experience..
my Pomegranate does fine in winter even when we have snow but we don't go below -10C as far as i know i have them around the house the are like weeds 😅i have to keep cuting them this year i finaly got a cuting to and make it root! my tho have all leafs by now, it keep realy hot this year, heck it didn't snow at all.
Trees tend to slow down in growth in a bonsai pot (generally). If you want to grow the tree more rapidly, a taller pot is best, if you want to slow the growth, a shallow pot helps. A general rule is that roots that are growing straight down become very vigorous and roots that grow more horizontally grow slower. It's not so much a bonsai pot vs. a regular garden pot, but the shape and style of the pot.
@TheBonsaiZone lemme tell ya something awesome I saw a old potted dwarf pomegranate something I barely ever see grow in Minnesota and one day i was walking past a family owned Asian restaurant and ask the manager about the plant and saw a spoiled fruit the size of a golf ball I ask if I could have it? he was like take it! now I have seeds germinating!
@@TheBonsaiZone I live in Croatia and they are all over the place here. I love them, the fruit and everything. Is there a way to send you a few pictures from where I live? I have found some great examples that you might be able to incorporate into your designs. Not just pommegranates by the way.

Much appreciated, thanks Matt!!
A nice simple root pruning and repotting of this little Pom in a cool pot.
Beautiful pot! I find plastic pots so incredibly depressing that it is a great relief every time a plant gets a real pot.

Always love your videos Nigel thank you for sharing

Thanks Rebecca, I'm wondering how much it will grow this year!
CRUD! Just missed the premier. Hope everyone has had a great day! Hopefully I'll catch tomorrow's.
That's such a nice pot! Can't wait to work on my seed grown pomegranates next spring

I 100% agree with the pot. To me dark blue and green looks the best with pomegranate.
What a gorgeous pot! I just got a pomegranate tree recently! I plan to make a medium to large bonsai with it! Thanks!
So nice of you, thanks!!
wow! what a sweetheart! and i love that pot!
Nice pot choice for this tree. I'll be interested is watching future videos about this tree's development.
That looks perfect Mr Saunders
You were listening to my girlfriend and I discussing what color pot to plant our western redbuds in lol 😂

I was kind of hoping you'd choose another one of those scary, naturalistic bear pots, like in yesterday's video....
Yes, this one is a bit more traditional as opposed to naturistic! Lol!

Good to know!
My pomegranate looked old very quickly, to the point that it’s dead.
😂
Not a good kind of old!
Bugga lol, sotty😢
Sorry
I've said before that the pot is part of the composition. if the first thing you see is the pot, it's the worng pot.
How do you decide when a tree is ready to transition from regular pot to bonsai pot? Great videos keep it up 👍

@@TheBonsaiZone 🤔 interesting and makes sense. Thank you
what is your soil mixture?
Foist
Nice
What soil mixture are you using
I use perlite and fired clay particles, mixed 50/50!
Not Foist.
Dwarf pomegranate?
Yes, I have two and both are doing well!!

Pommegranat are Mediterranean not tropical. They loose their leaves in fall.
Yes, exactly!
