I’m ‘bonsai curious’ I will admit, but I’m mostly just fascinated by Nigel’s enthusiasm. 😁 I am also a biologist and a gardener, so I’m close to the topic anyways. So I ‘bonsaied’ some of my house plants and generally introduced bonsai principles to how I treat all my plants from cedar hedges to African violets. This all makes sense to me from a technical/biological view AND I totally relate to the humanity. The jokes I make about the zombie apocalypse when hearing a siren have increased exponentially! 😎
In my collection I have 3 Tridents and a Trident cutting that has taken off like mad last summer!! The cutting was actually, the top off of one of the other three. When I cut it, the trunk at that cut point was 1/2" thick, and it had dozens of small branches that I cut way back, then scraped the bark on the bottom at the cut, dipped in rooting hormone, and it took off almost immediately. Its only 3" tall, has dozens and dozens of leaves right now, and is a gorgeous little Trident. It was just an attempt when I topped the bigger Trident to create taper, and decided to try and root it. It worked.. such a great surprise. Two of the three are about 12 years, one is about 8 years, and the cutting was rooted last summer. Absolutely gorgeous year round. Especially fall.
Missed the premiere again 🤦♀️I always have the chat on tho makes me feel like I'm watching the premiere 😁 the maple looks good. Everything is greening up here now in 🇬🇧 I've started repotting some of my tree's, the deciduous one's anyway. Great video thanks for sharing Nigel 👍
I live in growing zones 4-6 our winter low has been to -21°F our summer high was 121°F with 78% humidity. I offer my tree's zero protection and coming into spring now where I'm at my tree's are coming back to life and pushing buds the coniferous tree's are losing the frost blush they held all winter and bursting with greens and blue hues. I have an understanding of how the ice insulates the roots naturally and I tested the theory on doings so with my tree's being in pots. But to say the least it was a great success and am pleased with how the snow and ice nature provided added character to what I'm working with.
Always so much to do! Cute little maple! I put my dormant trees outside now! single digit negative night temperature and slightly into the plus daytime. Like tshirt weather!
Thanks for another video Nigel, I am surprised at how far your maple is leafed out. I’m all the way down in Pennsylvania and mine are nowhere near that far along even though they’re in a greenhouse.
Thank you for a fantastic update. That maple looks really good, and good match with the pot =D Awesome to see the greenhouse extend the overall growing season!
I am going to have to remember to only cut part of the tap root when I work on my chestnut seedling this year. 2/3 now leave 1/3 for next time. Not a maple so I will have to look up the specifics for the tree. Thanks Nigel.
Oh man, when I saw you carrying bags out of the little greenhouse I got so excited for you. Tomorrow or Wednesday for me. I bought a new pot for one of my maple. But Saturday morning the dog was chasing the cats around the house and knocked it down and broke it.😓 $50 down the drain. But after a glue job I at least can use it for tropical. I definitely know which side is the back now.
Yeah definitely. I think I’ve found all the pieces. Not sure if you meant “old glue trick”. Or if there is actually a glue called gold glue? Maybe you’ve got fat thumbs like me.🤣 Thanks for the encouragement.👍
Hello Nigel I'm from Quebec, and I love watching your videos. Could you make a video on the composition: of your bonsai soils (your mixes) for conifers / tropical / deciduous. Show us the identification of your bags, to fully understand! I don't understand English very well. Thanks :-)
Great video. Don't know how Canadians manage that weather. It does feel alot different at any given temperature to Scotland having the Canadian sunshine though!
That unique little pot did not stay empty long, did it? Great start on that root system. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience yet again, good sir!
Could you do a general video of what your bonsai soil compositions are for conifers/ tropics/deciduous if it wouldn't be a bother? I'd like to try to replicate your mixes for my environment so I can more successfully grow even more species in bonsai format.
35c in greenhouse. That's what it is here today early Autumn. I have leaf burn on my maples at the moment but I won't have any chance of snow on my plants here ever. ha ha
Also, thoughts on soil composition? I've always had real luck with tropics in the south with a good quality soil, whereas up north I would have needed a more proper bonsai mix for just about anything. Granted I also was a kid up north.
@@TheBonsaiZone TY sir! I learn more about bonsai from your channel than any other source. Keep up the great work, getting set to pot Japanese maple. Your latest vids very helpful.
I don't understand how you can tell a tree is still alive with no active growth, or buds without cutting it some. Honestly, I've probably thrown a few perfectly alive but didn't look alive trees away so far... how sad...

Nice cozy greenhouse. Great to sit in and relax with a nice cup of tea. Great updates seeing your trees.
I must send you some tea from Ireland Tom.

Always nice to watch you repotting in the greenhouse. Really like that glass/alum greenhouse. Gives me ideas… :)
Great job as always! My trees are all frozen to the ground… maybe by the weekend they will be free. 🤞
Tried to lift my maple forest off the ground on the weekend so I could work on it. Still frozen solid to the ground. Will have to wait.

I love your variety of maple bonsai. I only have tridents and JMs; and young ones at that! Although, time will change that . . . inevitably!
Have a few tridents and JM myself. Enjoy the journey 🌳

Try the gold glue trick like the old bonsai masters if you get borred waiting on spring

I love your root pruning ! Is the pot intentionally a little big for the tree to make it grow faster ?

Some maple seedlings just started sprouting here
Hi Nigel, if you plant back the large tap root you cut off the trident, will it grow into a tree ?
Also, thoughts on soil composition? I've always had real luck with tropics in the south with a good quality soil, whereas up north I would have needed a more proper bonsai mix for just about anything. Granted I also was a kid up north.
Use catle panels, it will make it more resistent to the weight of snow, :)
I could not work outside in that weather it's freezing to cold for me Nigel...
If it helps, they are 4 summers 3 winters trying to Yamadori mame them. Oh. 2, maybe 3 inches tall? Not sure how you measure squiggly trunk trees.
How do you tell if a deciduous is dead? My mame trees from seed are still bendy, but I don't have buds.
You can barely scratch it with your fingernail and something else and if you see green(the cambium), it should still be alive.
Just wait if still bendy properly still alive if you put you nail to bark you may see green but you may allso damage the little mame tree
Nigel, what size mesh are your sieves?
I have three sizes, large medium and small, 3, 6 and 8 mm. I could sift the large particles out, but I don't think they hurt the soil mix!

You can tell by scraching of a tiny bit of bark. If its green underneath the part of the tree is still alive.
