The first Nigtwish album I listened to was Human Nature. I was completely hooked on it and I played it every evening when I took late night walks after discovering it. I always get goosebumps listening to it. Floor has something in her voice that just makes me tear up nearly every time I hear her. It´s a beautiful feeling that I never have experienced listening to other vocalists. So grateful to discover them.

Thank you for your passionate presentation, I was hooked to your colorful storytelling and the 18:49 went really fast. And although I have my personal favorites among the albums and songs, which are not the same as yours, I fully understand and respect your point of view. My number one record is Dark Passion Play which blew my mind when it was released. I liked Nightwish before that but was not the biggest fan of Tarja. Now I adore Tarja so feelings can change as one grows older. DPP was such a dark and symphonic album but with a new voice that gave the song in my mind a perfect balance. And among those dark heavy songs there are ballads that Anette sings so effortlessly.
A song which is among my top three and is quite underrated among reactors and maybe by Nightwish themselves is Beauty of the Beast. That song is one epic journey and is just fantastic.
I am a new follower and hope to have more Nightwish content in the future. Greetings from snowy Finland.

Hello there, I really enjoyed your critiques of the Nightwish albums.... A little background... I'm not a long haired, head banging, metal clad rocker... I'm a 59 year old man from the UK 🇬🇧.... I've recently found Nightwish, "ghost love score" hooked me, "last ride of the day" kept me on the hook and I've listened / watched the usual recommendations... Loved "Greatest show on earth", "The poet and the pendulum" moved me.. (like the homage with your ear rings)..... Watching your excellent video here has encouraged me to take that path less trodden and find out more about the history / back catalogue..... Thank you, top video, stay well, stay healthy.... Subbed and belled .....

Great video and great comments, it's nice to see some interesting points of view on Nightwish and their music. I'm one of the unpopular ones, I can't say that I have a favorite album (to any band /musician) because that will mean that I love all the songs on an album more then all the songs on another, which for me it's false. As for songs.. I can't go on a day without listening to "Ghost love score". " the siren" has something special to me. Also "music" and "shoemaker" have something that speaks to my heart. And of course the classics.. Those songs that made me say that I love this band, just because they have so many good songs. Stay safe 🤘😁🤘

Only OG Nightwish fans understand this is the only top 3 (imo Oceaborn before Century Child, but I'm splitting hairs here). Imaginaerum gets a mention as it had some compelling and unique tracks. And that being said, I love Floor, but the quality of the writing in the past decade or so has been downhill, culminating with this last album which is utter garbage. No wonder Hietala had enough of this shit (labels and promoters forcing bands to create on a schedule means the new material is forced and not creative at all), I think him leaving the band will prove to be the worst thing that ever happened to NW. Turning into a washed-up pop band with extra steps. Thankfully, we'll always have these top 3 albums; but sometimes, just like a good series, it's best to know when to end it, rather than drag things on pointlessly over a few more seasons for the $$$

Beautifully made video, guys! You’re doing such good work! Mary you gotta tell me where you find these freaking great earrings 😍
Now on the subject, for me it would have to be Imaginaerum, Once and I don’t know if Oceanborn or Century Child.
Imaginareum stuck a lot with me because, the day I heard it the first time I was walking on the beach just after ending a long relationship (Adivinhaa 😆), it was early like 8am. I had just jogging with mamãe and than I was chilling, staring at the early sun shining on a still blue sea as I heard this album. I was not sad because the world had opened up for me. The sun became warm very gently (not hellish as Rio can sometimes be) ... It was also the moment I decided I was coming to Germany that year 💕
    Once is a goddamn masterpiece.
2004 was my first concert ❤️

Those earrings were meant to be a nod to the Dark Passion Play cover art! 😄
I think Century Child is a better album than Oceanborn. However, Oceanborn was a HUGE leap forward for the band compared to Angels Fall First so it deserves credit there.

*Sorry, I have to add : "Human. :||: Nature." For Disc One they still used pre-recorded orchestral parts. Track 10 is on the second disc. It's an instrumental which consists almost only orchestral music. But you can still hear Troy and his Uillean pipe in "Moors" too. In my Limited Edition earbook there's also a third disc, which consists the instrumentals [band music, orchestral music & choirs, but no lead or backing vocals] of the tracks 1-9 from the first disc. Greetings & Stay safe.*

I can totally understand that! When they revealed Anette and I realized she wasn't a classical singer I was very excited about it because I saw it as an opportunity to explore new sounds, and they did! I liked her voice from the get go, I really enjoyed her! Her voice is a bit "child-like" which I think really goes with the aura of Nightwish for obvious reasons!

Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are my favourite albums, yet Annette seems like the least popular vocalist of Nightwish. I think they are both great albums and this video gives a really cool commentary on the details in Imaginaerum. I love both 'Scaretale' and 'Slow, Love, Slow' and I think that both of these songs suit Annette much more than either Floor or Tarja.

  • @soundslikeblue
    @soundslikeblue 4 года назад +4

Hi DC Wonders, Thank you for this video, I liked to watch your enthusiasm, even though I cannot agree that Imaginaerum can be "the most Nightwish album", For me "the most Nightwish album" has to be "Century Child" for several reasons:
1 - In terms of musical composition it was a very experimental album which still includes very heavy power metal songs like: "The Wayfarer", "Dead to the World" or "End of all hope", also some trash sound to the iconic "Slaying the dreamer", BUT more than that it includes one of the most amazing Tuomas' compositions ever, utterly underrated among the newer nightwish fans: "Beauty OF the Beast" which marks the first time a Nightwish album would have a longer more progressive track at the end. This album also includes some of the band's signature songs like "Ever Dream" or the lengendary cover of "Phantom of the Opera" (that even Andrew Loyd Webbber loved!).
2 - In terms of new elements, besides a full orchestra for the first time in a Nightwish album (already mentioned above), there is Marco's bass and vocals for the first time too, producing a perfect contrast with Tarja's powerfull voice. Plus, Tarja started to experiment more and more with her voice around this time, departing from a purer classical vocal aproach that appeared on the first 3 Nightiwhs albums to a kind of hybrid vocal technique she is been using and develloping until the present day, always taking advantage of her very dark vocal tone and classical infused techique, but adapting it more and more to different sound qualities and to fit the music (Tarja already had done that with the recording of Sleepwalker, with 2 different studio versions recorded around the same time, but a tottaly different vocal delivery, and these experiments would become even more iconic with "The Siren" from Once album). Tuomas actually explained better than anyone else the impact that Tarja's vocals had in Nightwish sound becoming heavy metal, instead of an acoustic mood music he originally had in mind, as you can see in this short interview: ruclips.net/video/3het6cmQR-k/видео.html
3 - The new song themes and new image of the band. The ideas of lost innocence and memories of childhood surfaced to Nightwish in this album (on "Ocean Soul" or "Bless the Child" for exemple), It was a very dark album but still with remains of adventure and wilderness (on "The wayfarer" or "Lagoon", for exemple), and unfulfilled Love was explored in a deeper way than ever (as can be hear in "Feel for you", "Forever Yours", "Beauty OF the Beast", or "Ever Dream"). The band showed as a matured band more than before (even if as musicians they were always extremely skilled from the very begining), all members with long hair and more stage presence, Tarja wearing her very elegant long dresses as a trademark image on Nightwish oficial photoshots and while on touring, and an overall big chemestry on stage: ruclips.net/video/s0kCxDeSYdo/видео.html (Only in 2005 at the end of the Once Tour, Tuomas and Tarja's personnal issues started to afect the whole band in my opinion, and it is unfair and false to think it had been always like that... because it clearly was not. Plus, Tarja always felt closer to Emppu and Marco until the very end of an Era, and she already performed live with Marco more recently).
So, as a long time fan of the Band I find out the Century Child album as a kind of "Source" not only from the elements that already had made the band BIG in Europe and South America at that point, but also to the newer elements that would make Nightwish even bigger abroad and would find further continuity and development with Once. Tuomas composing skills were already on point since the begining, specially with Oceanborn, but found a new maturity and soundtrack mood with Century Child (that acompained Nightwish until the Present day). "Beauty OF the Beast" also happens to be my favourite Nightwish song, alongside "Pharaoh Sails to Orion", "The Siren", "Sleeping Sun", "Ghost Love Score", "The Riddler", and "Slow Love Slow".
Sorry for writting such a long comment, but I think your video deserved a well thought answer, I will end by putting my personal TOP 5 Nightwish albuns, as well as very very nice interview to both Tuomas and Tarja right after the release of Century Child that quite matches some of my written words here: ruclips.net/video/gt0haAiGbHo/видео.html&t
So my personal top 5 Nightwish albuns is:
1 & 2 - Once / Century Child (I think its like a tie for different kinds of achievements)
    3 - Oceanborn
    4 - Imaginaerum
    5 - Wishmaster
Even if we can't agree on this list, I think we both Love Nightwish and I trully wish you all the Best! Cheers from Portugal! \m/ \m/

That was a very thoughtful response, I appreciated it a lot. Thanks for taking the time to offer such a careful contribution here!
Century Child was the first Nightwish album I ever listened to! So it has a special place in my heart. However, I see it as a transitional album - it is remarkably different from Oceanborn and Wishmaster (which were very power metal) but it was not as ambitious, bold, creative, and mature as Once. But being the first album with Marco definitely adds an importance to it as well. Ever dream and Slaying the dreamer are incredible songs. And I agree that Beauty of the Beast is underrated. It’s so beautiful!

@@dcwonders1222 Thank you so much for your kind reply! To be honest, its really difficult for me to choose between Once, Century Child and, next but very close, Oceanborn... Its almost depending on the point of view of my analysis:
Because Those 3 albuns, besides their musical achievements alone (in which Once is probably the best crafted, I must admit), they represent milestones concerning the evolution steps of the Nightwish sound as well, and as an Art Historian myself, I value a Lot those works of transition and experimentation (sometimes as much as the more "stable quality" works that usually succeed afterwards, very much like what happens on architecture or painting history).
So I always try to forget that more "personal" input while ranking them as music works, but it's hard, you know! I guess its just my reflective nature too ahah =D

I am going to be controversial here. Apart from her interpretation of GLS which only a idiot wouldn't appreciate its brilliance. Floor usually doesn't do it for me and her two albums which is by no means just her fault are dull to my ears. To my mind it's either Thomos doesn't know or care how to write for Floors voice or Floor isn't as good at phrasing original material as the other two lead singers of nightwish. I suspect a little of both. Let's take the classic Nemo. Tarja's original is brilliant in tone, the etherial quality gives the song a mystical feel a ghostly echo that Tarjas vocals are unequalled for. Annette Olson's version changes the dynamics of the song nearly 180 degrees. With Annette we have a very connected fantastic rock song and the bits she adds to the song just emphasis this song works brilliantly as a pure rock n roll track, probably my personal favorite. Floors version brings nothing new to the song in fact takes away imho. I think once is the classic nightwish album but it's run very close by both Annette's albums. Floors albums I am not a fan of thought the second one is better than the first which imho is just poor. You see I think nightwish work best as a art band with Tarja or a plain rock band with Annette. Floors version is somewhere in between and it can be a bit dull to my ears. Another controversial opinion, I also think Floor would make a brilliant lead singer of my fav band Iron Maiden. Of course you can't replace Bruce but I remember reading a bomber Harris interview whwn Bruce left the band and he was saying in looking for a new singer and he was considering a female lead singer. Imagine if that was Floor instead of Blaze and all the possibilities that would have opened up. I said it would be controversial but for me Floor Jansen is in the wrong band her voice is metal, that's when Floor is unbeatable in my opinion. Nightwish haven't been metal for a long time now.
