When Finn says things like 'who's out there saying ACDC/RHCP are amazing', I feel like these are the thoughts of someone who's part of a pretty small niche and doesn't realize it.
I like Finn's content, but I hate it every time he talks about topics like these from a personal point of view bc most of what he says is just straight bs and he treats his bs and opinions like they're facts it's really off putting

I just thought it was because he's not European. People still go completely apeshit for RHCP here and most of the modern fanboys will say that garbage like Stadium Arcadium is actually their best work.
Man, I'm going to straight up admit I still listen to pre-'92 AC/DC and pre-2004 RHCP..... they may have overstayed their welcome after those periods, but their work before that is legit, and if you don't get it, too bad for you.

AC/DC are massive EVERYWHERE. They fill FOOTBALL STADIUMS when they tour. Back in Black is the greatest selling hard rock album of all time. What planet does Finn live on? I'm genuinely surprised he doesn't appreciate any Bon era stuff, as that material is pretty punk in comparison to what followed.
Agreed on every point, except that even the Bon era stuff has the most boring drumming ever put down on tape.

TOOL is a great band, but the problem is they are the exactly the most accessible inaccessible band. They are jussssst normal enough to have radio singles, but weird enough to be the most advanced thing that anyone who doesn't dig into rock music beyond the radio is ever going to hear. There legitimately isn't another band that does their sound better, and their first 3 albums were all significantly different and uniquely interesting (the latest I agree sounds like total retread). EDIT: I typed all this before getting to the Olive Garden bit lol
I got into them alongside Coheed and Cambria, which has a very similar fandom, and The Mars Volta, which I guess narrowly avoided this by not actually staying on the radio very long. I quickly learned that all of these bands cited King Crimson as an influence and immediately realized the depths of the genre upon investigating them.

I'm a Mars Volta fan and I always thought Coheed and Cambria was extremely corny and cringe. They always come up in the same conversation though. I guess there are a few very superficial similarities but in my mind these bands aren't even playing the same game.

I want to mention these reaction videos from this composer guy 'Key of Geebz'. He made me re-appreciate Tool. Imo they're both simple and complex, as well as sonically great.
Deftones are easily one of the most consistent 90s bands and one of a small handful who are still actually putting out great records. If anything they are underrated they have such an original sound that so many people have tried emulating.
Music is subjective. I can’t make it through a single Deftones song.

Defines are the pinnacle of inconsistency; not one of their albums is good all the way through. They’re the only band I can think of that will make one of the best songs you’ve ever heard, and the next song on their album will be putrid and unlistenable

Not a huge Beatles fan. I do know however that it is plain stupid to call them overrated. Nirvana too, although in this case I am also a huge fan. I don't know how he did it, but Kurt was able to communicate so much raw emotion through his performance. It fascinated me as a teenager and it still does 25 years later. Also he wrote so many good songs in such a short time, how could anyone not be at least intrigued if not flat out fascinated by him. He was our generations Jimi Hendrix, he came up, changed music forever, and then died shortly after to become a legend.

In the US, I think AC/DC are rated exactly right.
They are thought of as a fun band, with a bunch of good songs that may sound the same, but are good for head-banging and learning the riffs on guitar. Nobody I’ve ever heard thinks they are a transcendent influence on music- just that they are a cool starter band for people getting into rock or cool for party music. 😎

The only people who overrate AC/DC are their fanbase who say they’re the best band ever in comment sections. Other than that what you said about them is the truth.

It's impossible to understand the impact of the Beatles today because there already was the Beatles. The only way to really measure their impact and talent is to wonder how things would have been if they never existed. That's why it's so hard to fully appreciate innovators well after their heyday. Would I put on a Beatles album today? Probably not. But if it were the 1960s and the thousands of bands they influenced had not made music yet, i'm sure i'd be a huge fan. I always make this argument abut Jimi Hendrix. Today there are plenty of guitarist who can sound like him. But listen to rock guitar before him and you will hear a lot of rhythmic strumming of chords along with the drummer and vocals and not as much composition on its own.
I think we pretty much would've gotten here (as in their influence) via another English band one way or another. A lot was happening at that time there in the music scene and someone else would've blew up globally eventually.
Just as people say Hendrix is the greatest guitarist of all time. I don't think so, he was the greatest of his time. But given how progressive guitar playing is the greatest guitar player is one who is alive right now. Guitar playing is like skateboarding. Eventually someone comes along does what was thought to be impossible or never even thought of. Once this happens people figure out how to do it and it starts to become a coming thing. Granted there are a few things only a select few can do. Buy once that door is open people start to enter.

We need a band that 1) is inventive, 2) changes direction over time, and 3) started out mainstream enough to get teen listeners on board. Lots of '60s UK bands were #1; and bands like the Who or Yardbirds were #2 as well; but #3 requires baby steps, as well as tacit approval from parents. The music scene was pretty vanilla in '63 -- heartthrob vocalists, surfer songs, and folk trios. I'm not sure either band would have passed the US 'dad test,' allowing them to get famous enough to then reinvent themselves without mainstream OK. So, if mom+dad won't let you play most UK bands, that leaves what -- the Beach Boys? They were the only band that was anywhere near that big at the time. And not the 'Pet Sounds' group: Brian Wilson might have just kept making surf music without the competition of the Lennon-McCartney catalog.
I agree. I’m an 80s kid and was a huge Duran Duran fan and I remember press asking new Fab Five? And at first being an 80s kid didn’t know what the original was. But I’m sure if I was a 50s kid just like my Duran Duran love like first three albums I would’ve been just as enthralled with the Beatles 🎉🎉🎉

I think most Tool fans are just normal people who enjoy their sound. It’s a vocal minority that are off-putting and even that is overblown. I think the meme of the Tool fan has overhyped the degree to which the fandom is actually annoying. In a sense, I think what’s actually overrated about Tool is the stereotype of their fandom. They are an objectively great band by just about any metric you can measure these things with.
I never understood TOOL until i started listening to them while Tripping. Instantly turned into my favorite band of all time. They don’t just make songs, they make an experience.
Tool is completely one of a kind it both its music and its imagery. I realize that’s exactly the type of statement that gets made fun of when ppl dunk on Tool fans, but to me it’s a true statement. I get that they aren’t for everyone, but when someone wants to act like they fail to see how this isn’t appealing at all, I want to say it strikes me as more pretentious than tool fans themselves. Then again, there are countless aspects of popular culture that I am completely oblivious to its appeal, such as musicals, graphic novels, disco music, or anything that’s ever aired on the TLC channel, while it’s probably obvious to people who enjoy that stuff. So I may not be the most qualified arbiter of ‘appeal’. I just like the band, that’s all.

As a fan I like watching peoples reactions to hearing Tool for the first time, if they don't like it that's fine, I can respect someone who's given it a chance first, it's people with preconceived notions that piss me off
I see more people bitching about Tool fans than I do...actual Tool fans....reminds me of the Rick and Morty thing tbh....we get one little incident of cringey ass Rick and Morty fans and now all of a sudden if you're even seen even so much as watching this stupid fucking cartoon you're automatically some weird shut in who must be cyber bullied immediately. Tool fans who I've actually met...generally....are just people who listen to Tool. That's it.
I feel like there was confusion between overrated versus overplayed. A lot of these bands are just overplayed.
And I would say that only SOME of their songs are overplayed. Smells like teen spirit or Highway to hell.

I think everyone but Deftones on this list are super overrated. Save for nirvana whos just a bit overrated. Acdc, imagine dragons are absolute garbage.
Man... With a band like Tool, it helps to recognize their strengths, and realize that THEY recognize their strengths and stay in their lane, so to speak. They're all about rhythm. I think Beato pointed this out for me, they're really pretty minimalistic when it comes to harmonic content, and that lets the rhythmic and percussive elements define their sound. It's like the notes are just there to embellish the rhythm. And who else hits the "psychedelic metal" nail on the head better than Tool does with this formula? Long-form, complex rhythmic masterpieces with what is essentially a glorified drone over it makes for some of the most hypnotic and surprisingly listenable metal music you'll ever find.
And if you're expecting them to be something else, then yeah, you're missing it. It's not right to say that something is overrated or otherwise not good just because it's not something else that you like. That's like saying, "potatoes are overrated because they don't taste like carrots. Everything is supposed to taste like carrots, dammit!" You can't really rate something without having a sufficient appreciation for what it is in the first place.
I really don't buy this because they never felt minimal or overly restrained in their heydey on albums like "Aenima" or "Undertow". They feel minimal and redundant now with stuff like "Fear Inoculum" because it's actually a tired rehash. So your mind has to do some gymnastics to find value in it.
@@MazaroAnonymous maybe yours does. That's probably anchor bias talking, you prefer the albums that introduced you to the band. I got into Tool with some of their later stuff, without knowing their older stuff. The first two albums were obnoxious, I thought. Maybe I'll think differently later. But I definitely never needed to do gymnastics to find value in FI. I think the sound is rich and the writing is really innovative. I could do without some of the digitized instrumental stuff, but I'll take the good with the bad. If I want perfect music I'll make it myself.

To me tool Is Maynard and Danny you don't have a band without them. Also I don't like tool because of how pretentious they come off. I like prog bands like Periphery because they have a sense of humor. Older prog bands like Rush had a sense of humor too. Tool is humorless and smug kKinda like Maynard's personality
Normally, I love Finn's takes so much on most things. Mostly due to being able to see why people might like a certain thing, even though he himself might not, and denounce gatekeepers and elitism at every turn. With all that in mind, that AC/DC analysis was really the antithesis of this. He's human though so these things happen

There are times where Finn hits the mark and other times where his bias leaks through...which i can understand. There are some musicians that one not only cant connect with but also dislikes then trying to be objective about them is a process on its own. He doesnt strike me as a yes man or people pleaser so its probably a challenge to give every musician reverence from the same place
No one regards AC/DC as a great band. No one pretends they are musically proficient, have great technical proficiency, have a wide repertoire of musical styles, have meaningful, deep lyrics etc. They are a good, hard rocking band with every album following the same formula.
I like a stack of their songs. But they are not a great band in the technical, musical proficiency sense.
He turned me off some time ago when he called Folk Metal gimmick music + most stories about bands and music are from a pure US perspective.

@@MikeIzzle_ idk man, my biggest problem with their music is that even today I think they make a very 2012 sounding style of pop music, and to be honest that was a sound that had aged poorly even by 2015. I don't necessarily blame them for this as this was around the time they blew up and were (I would argue) at the peak of their relevance, but I feel like that means their huge songs back then were markers of the time, and most of what has come after that is stuck in the past trying to replicate what catapulted them to super star status. And that to me is what makes imagine dragons such a miserable listening experience. Even when it's a new song, it already sounds like the shit they play nonstop at Kohl's, Target, Chic Fil A, etc (and the insufferable Karen vibes those places usually have). A lot of groups and artists that blew up in that era also have the problem of still sounding like nothing has changed since the early 2010s, but none have gotten the prolonged and excessive plat imagine dragons gets. Sorry for going in I may be high rn
Yep. Clear Channel in the early 2010s would overplay the shit out of them on every "adult alternative" station to the point where you'd recognize the first 3 or 4 notes and immediately viscerally reach to change the station to WDVE, NPR, ESPN, WAMO or some other station... any other station. Same deal with Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark". Every Clear Channel station and NHL team overplayed the hell out of them to the point where it was a visceral negative reaction when you'd hear the first few notes start playing.
Lost me on the Tool opinion. Maybe some fans take it to far, but from a musician stand point, they are very important. They’re a good introduction into technical/progressive music.
I'm not even s big tool fan, but I do appreciate their stuff. Especially live. My wife loves them so we've gone a few times. Great shows!

I’ve seen tool live twice and it was insanely tight. I’m not really a huge fan, but to call them mid while also calling them “phenomenal musicians” is pretty stupid. Their extremely spiritual fan base is what inclines people to say they’re overrated. I totally understand that because it turned me away from them as well. But I know/know of far too many musicians who aspire to be as good as them to say they’re mid. What those dudes are able to pull off live every show is no joke.

I feel like the "hidden meaning" crowd of Tool got a lot quieter since Maynard calling them insufferable retards became such a known thing, got 'em good.
Needless to say I'll never shut up about Tool because they're incredible musicians and artists to me.

Dunno if it's an urban legend, but I think they once said that they chose the band name so that their fans would walk around with a T-shirt reading "TOOL" in big letters.
Radiohead I would say, is NOT overrated. I thought they were an innovative indie band whom I greatly loved.
If Radiohead had only released Kid A I'd might understand someone calling them underrated, but a band who released the bends, ok computer, in rainbows and a moon shaped pool overrated? Definitely not.

@@alexmonro1711 Yeah Hail To the Thief is sorta a middle child. Kid A is brilliant(remember the context of when the album came out, and the state of rock). After Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows came out.
Number one for me will ALWAYS be Foo Fighters. They are the most watered down, mom and dad friendly, radio safe rock music out there. When I say watered down I literally mean their riffs sound purposefully watered down to not upset the moms when it gets played at the pee wee football halftime break right after the censored version of “lose yourself” by Eminem gets played for the 10000000th time at a youth sport game

Radiohead is not overated just because you feel one of their records are. All of these bands that you reviewed have a quality about them. They are popular and still being listened to for a reason. Each of these bands with the exception of the 80s rock bands, are unique. They have a sound that is very distinct. I would say the bands that copied other bands style are overated.
How I felt about him saying it’s overrated. He didn’t mention the bands other albums at all, and just hated on kid a calling it Olive Garden music. It was strange that you evaluated Radiohead by one of their albums - they’ve evolved quite a lot imo and overall make great listenable complicated music. And I think this applies to Tool - if you leave all the cult nonsense aside they make great progressive metal (without copying anyone) that appeals to a wide audience which is rare for the genre
But, that's not what the video is about.
One overlooked aspect of Radiohead and Tool is that neither of them have any sex appeal. It sounds silly, but it's actually a pretty big deal that they've made it so far based solely on their music. I'm definitely a fan of both bands, and the best concert I ever attended was Radiohead at Madison Square Garden circa 2004. Amazing show!

Im honestly extremely surprised that Deftones are even mentioned on here, ive never heard anybody say they're overrated. Especially since they dont have nearly as high of a following as most of the bands on here.
Most of the 80s Metal (Thrash, Death etc.) has so much more character in it in comparison to todays Metal, where most of it, not all of it, but most of sounds so polished and clean and predicitable with Clicktracks, Metronoms and everything perfect. Like out of a factory.

Technology tends to move forward. You can still get a raw but clean sound so many bands are doing it these days. The 80s metal bands dont compare in quality to alot of modern (raw sounding) metal without the loss of character.

I'm confused, why when talking about Radiohead, only Kid A is taken in to consideration? They have 8 other albums. This is supposed to be a video about overated bands (which I'd say Radiohead aren't), not overated albums.
Love tool and if people dont get it thats fine. i can hear the differences between the albums and depending on mood is how i choose which album to listen to. 10,000 days for example helped me in a transitional period in my life where opiate was just chill music for me

Tool deserves all the hype they get because they get 1/10th the hype of half the garbage rappers and country artists out there and produce something that is 1000 times the quality. And in all seriousness, I'm not some tool purest fan boy, I have gone years without listening to them.
I couldn’t construct a more “tool” fan response if I tried. I’m not even saying this in a bad way, I just always associated Tool with people who were more in touch with their emotional side. Glad it helped you out though, they’ve got some great music.

I love The Beatles, they were the stepping stone into the wonderful world of music and all it's types. Dad is a huge fan, particularly of Lennon, and as a child I heard a lot of their stuff... From the 70s when I was born

Objectively they can be overrated in the literal sense of the word but it is not undeserved. Classics like "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane" aside, all their other stuff is just wow. They did in 8 years what most people cant do in lifelong careers.

It's just amazing how many Beatles songs are deeply ingrained in Western pop culture. I never sat down to listen to a Beatles album, hell, I never even actively chose to listen to a Beatles song (with one exception one time I randomly played "Strawberry Fields" on YT), and yet, when Kye Smith did his 5-minute Beatles drum chronology I still recognized most of the songs

Its weird, but I respect AC/DC and The Beatles for doing the opposite thing. The Beatles rapidly evolved their sound within a decade, whereas AC/DC found a sound they liked, found an audience for it, and stuck to it for many decades.

I’m a huge Tool fan, and I know there are people who think Tool is overrated, but guess what? That’s okay. It is well known that Maynard and the guys want fans to interpret music how they see fit. Take the grunge bands for example. Of the “big 4,” Nirvana. AIC, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, Nirvana was the most recognizable. But for me, I liked them the least of the 4. Don’t get me wrong, I like Nirvana, but for me, Soundgarden was my favorite from that era, mainly because of Chris Cornell’s incredible voice.

The Beatles for starters are certainly NOT overrated. They have great song writing, innovation and certainly shifted the paradigm for music. They are not my favourite band, but do recognize their genius, and their massive influence.
Funny thing about Tool is that they, themselves, really don't seem to care about any of the stuff that their fans so rabidly fan over. I love the band for that reason among many. They just act like their entire discography is one giant shitpost, despite them knowing full well the love and care they put into their stuff. Love them or hate them, it's hard to ignore that they see the ridiculousness in it all, and they really only care about the music
Quite a few of these bands are self-absorbed but not over rated. Most of them are also very influential and maybe people don't like them but do listen to a band that was heavily influenced by them.

Deftones first album (Adrenaline) is like nothing anyone has ever done. Even Deftones cudnt recreate it. It's one of the top 5 greatest albums. Wow! How anyone cud say they were overrated, I really don't understand that. 90s music was the best ever. Deftones was one of if not the first rock bands to have a high pitch melodic singer and high pitch guitar. Deftones is by far one of the greatest bands ever!!

I'm still not sure why Finn believes that the embarassingly over-enthusiastic nerds that can be found at the core of every fandom only delegitimizes certain bands he's fond of tearing down... or damning with faint praise. He loves tossing out the 'Olive Garden' metaphor for music that uber-fans consider brilliant, but always fails to make the criticism stick by refusing to put his own tastes on the line. In this case, he neglects to provide us with his idea of the Michelin Guide 3-starred cuisine that makes Radiohead seem like Olive Garden. I'm interested in hearing who he has in mind, or if there's anyone at all.

ACDC or Acca Dacca as we call them here in Australia, have reached legendary status here that transcends music - they remain a timeless institution - while so many of their generation have becomes relics of their era. And we are talking about a band who did their last tour over a decade ago! AC-DC in THIS country is loved by young and old - have a good listen to their music - it's exceptional and timeless Hard Rock - not Metal ( AC-DC is not heavy metal).
I cannot imagine where hard rock and metal would be today if not for AC-DC - their songs are anthems on a scale that rock seldom reaches. Long after we are all gone their music will still live on - and if that's not stuff of legend then I don't know what is.
I personally don't care about the Beatles much. But then you see people like Tony Iommi, Lemmy Kilmister or Ozzy talk about how they loved their music and how much of an influence they were for them to even start to play music and you have to recognize the band's importance for rock and metal music.
Respect to AC/DC for playing the same chunky guitar riffs and anthem lyrics for 40 years that’s why even their new albums always sell great and land at #1 on the billboard sales chart which is really rare for an older legacy Rock band. ✊🏻

When people talk about overrated bands bear in mind that many people have pretty incomplete and cursory knowledge of a bands output. It's like film buffs discussing overrated films when they may have seen a few disjointed 3 minute clips of a movie. Many bands most well known songs don't showcase the full potential of them.
You can argue any band with a vocal fandom can be argued as over rated, as it's usually the fans who ruin it for the rest of us.

I've always felt Nirvana was overrated but I had a lot of friends in high school that loved them. Not sure if they're overrated or I just got sick of hearing them/about them. (I am in no way saying they're bad)

AC/DC are HUGE. I'm getting to be middle aged, but since I was a kid, AC/DC were always, well perhaps not relevant, but everpresent. They put on a great show too!
That 80's point is way too general for my taste. You can't claim that a whole decade is overrated in terms of music. Sure, there were tons of bands who were mediocre at best, but there were also a lot of bands who paved the way for others, who rode on their tail and stepped it up a notch. Bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth and Blind Guardian started out in the 80's and still play the big crowds.
And saying, that the Beatles are overrated is like saying Elvis is overrated, or the Rolling Stones, Queen and David Bowie. You can't overrate what is still considered by many to be classics.
I agree that a lot of 80's metal hasn't aged well, but man I still absolutely adore King Diamond and Mercyful Fate.
The only good Metallica is 80s Metallica. Slayer, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies.. Plenty 80s I still jam to. Pantera.

I think Radiohead and Tool *should* belong in the same boat as Green Day and Nirvana as bands that combine edgy underground influences with genuinely great pop-friendly songwriting, and absolutely deserve praise because of that. The only issue is that their aesthetics come across as more highbrow and intellectual, which makes their fans a billion times more pretentious.

And both Radiohead and Tool have songs that are genuinely really out there, but in my humble opinion their more accessible songs tend to be better. Accessibility is a strength, not a weakness.

At least Half my high school my freshman year 2006-2007. Stadium Arcadium dropped and that album was everywhere. Hands down the most popular rock band at my school. I just thought they were really meh and got so sick of Dani California and that Hey Oh song.

Mr Bungle are objectively phenomenal musicians. Quite possibly the best group of proficient musicians out of all of the ones you have mentioned in this video. You can like them or not, but every single musician in that band was top notch

Recently, I did a deep dive of Nirvana's catalogue after many years of not having heard them. I was impressed at how well the music aged, still sounded great, better than I remembered. The NY Unplugged session is sublime. Kurt may have the best rock voice

With 80's metal in general while some has definitely aged poorly, it did have the impact on inspiring Power Metal as a genre which is still going strong. I listen to a lot besides 80's inspired metal, but I love a ton of it. I definitely agree that people who will only listen to literal 80's metal are pretty ridiculous though.
Good point, also you could take all the praise and criticisms of 80s metal and apply them to Nirvana equally. both deserve credit but at the end of the day, your preference is all that stands
Plus all of these genres have the same pattern. Whether it's NWOBHM, American hardcore punk, thrash, grunge, etc., you start off with a fresh wave of innovators who create the sound, then you have the groups that follow in their wake, and then you have the bland wannabes that overwhelm the scene as it begins to die down. When people hate on one genre, they may not be aware of its earlier days. Early hair metal was certainly better than late 80's/early 90's hair metal.
The interesting thing about 80's metal is that it was the one time in history when metal conquered pop culture, and heavy metal could be described as bright, joyful, fun, sexy, and life-affirming. But after the Grundge wave knocked heavy metal off the main stage, it had a demoralizing effect on all music. Everything got darker, more neurotic. Rock music had to sound more bummed out. And after Cobain's suicide and Grunge trends fizzled out, lots of violent ghetto hip-hop filled the void. Metal fans in the 90's had to look to darker currents in the underground for inspiration: first Thrash - and then Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, etc. On the upside, we got some great extreme metal bands out of the darkening of the 90's. Lots of great death metal and black metal (and metalcore by extension). But hasn't it almost been played out? Why does metal have to keep sinking DOWN? These days, I'm too jaded to be impressed by most rock/metal bands still milking themes of "darkness." I grew up immersed in the post-grunge malaise, escaping into all the death metal, black metal, doom metal, metalcore, deathcore, and whatever I could find. But I wonder if it's grown stale for our generation. We've already heard darkness, depression, and anger done well enough through countless death and black metal acts. New albums trying too hard to sound evil or depressing just make me bored, and most of them are derivative. Lately, I've found it refreshing to look back on Glam Metal (the best of it, at least) as just another genre of extreme metal, misunderstood and unfairly dismissed. It's extreme in its unapologetic pride, confidence, glamor, audacity, and carefree, maximally euphoric 80's cool vibes approach. And it's amazingly subversive when compared to the monotonously dark, neurotic, depressing, and politically correct themes which have dominated modern rock/metal scenes ever since Cobain's self-loathing Grunge attitude influenced the entire music industry and set the tone of the future. The difference is...modern rap music may be volatile, but it doesn't doesn't often encourage weird levels of neuroticism or self-deprecation like in much depressive metal and alt-rock, so it's no surprise that prideful rap artists have become more attractive to newer generations who don't want to be bummed out all the time. Rock/metal has become the genre associated with downers, burnouts, stoners, djenty guitar nerds, and anti-social/self-hating whiny white dudes. After 30 years of this, is it possible to bring rock and metal out of the dark and add a bit of vibrancy and vitality to keep it alive? Metal shows in the 80's were bright, colorful events, packed full of fun-loving guys and beautiful women who danced and sang along to catchy anthems, excited by charasmatic lead singers and shredding guitarists. I did not see anything nearly as interesting at the last progressive deathcore show I attended. I'm not saying we should go back to Glam Metal or imitate it directly in any way, but it's very interesting to reconsider as an anidote to the current era's malaise. Maybe it could serve as some sort of inspiration to resist the trend of demoralization that began in the 90's mainstream?

Iron Maiden always deserves mention with regard to 80s rock, regardless of claims of sell-out. I do not think they ever did sell-out, but they became popular because their musical arrangements were exceptional skill-wise. Some might consider them too artsy as well lol... take "run to the hills"! It is like they give history lessons as well.
Holy shit that Radiohead take is radioactive (teehee). You can tell his Radiohead take is mid because he only talks about Kid A and not the 5 albums afterwards. Like, you can't in one breath say that The Beatles weren't overrated as a result of their auditory experimentation but then say that Radiohead's auditory experimentation isn't that experimental. And to not even mention that In Rainbows was one of the first records to be a "pay what you want" release seems to be almost purposeful. I vividly remember when In Rainbows came out and it was a groundbreaking record. He can say the music isn't that great but if you look at the critical reception and the commercial performance, it's pretty clear that Finn either didn't bother doing the research or is refusing to give credit where credit is due to generate discussion. Either way, the lack of research is pretty clear here to me.

FYI Back in Black was one of the highest sold albums of all time. They also came out with an album in 2020 that reached number one in 21 countries. It sold 1.4 million copies worldwide. Red Hot Chili Peppers just released an album debuting at number-one in 16 different countries and are about to begin a world stadium tour.
yeah this guys normally pretty spot on but calling one of the last great rock bands irrelevant was pretty stupid. Watch out or get THUNDERSTRUCK hahaha
They're one of the biggest name brand rock bands. Sonically, their music was always sound, never what I'd call low quality. Sure they wrote the samey kind of albums over and over. But some people also can't stand when bands evolve or change.
You can call them a great band without believing they're the best of all time. That's where I stand on them. I have a couple of merch items of theirs because I respect their love for rock as a genre and understand their influence on people.
I saw them live and even with Axle Rose they still put on a fantastic show. They're great but there are artists I enjoy more than them.

I still listen to a lot of 80s metal and I still think it's great music that stands the test of time. That being said, I listen to a lot of new metal as well. My musical tastes cross a variety of genres and decades...from the 30s & 40s until today, from jazz and big band to metal, punk, industrial and electronic. Good music is good music no matter when it was made or who made it.

Now I would simply say one thing that makes a difference though. Music is music, but damn that 80's SOUND with all that reverb did not age well imo. YET it's ALSO a reason as to why I still listen to it from time to time and probably not a remaster of sorts if that went down the drain. We can all agree that sometimes we know something is not good, and yet we 💖 it.
And honnestly, that sound thing is valid for all era of music (and also applies as of today) but that's also part of what makes those days part of history. (caps used as emphasis)
@@haileene703 Every era of music has it's signature sound for sure. Production techniques and the tech of the time as well as general trends in style are all reflected in an era's music. I find that all have their charm and don't undercut the value of the music or it's listenability. I mean...some of the old mono jazz recordings sound pretty bad by today's standards but the music, the emotion, the talent...it comes shining through.

IDK why the Stones get mentioned and venerated in the same breathe as The Beatles, while The Kinks were putting out more rockier and subversive hits in the same time frame.
I love ACDC, Yes they are very samey and simplistic but that's OK. I'm not saying I like all their stuff, but those first 4 albums are a seminal piece of Rock history, it's dirty, raw, and most importantly fun.
Dude Finn is on point with a lot of things but every once in a while he says something so out of touch and dumb I can’t believe he’s serious. “Who’s saying AC/DC is a great band?” EVERYONE dude. And they just had a huge hit in 2021 so.. 🤷🏻♂️

Yees! They literally sold out in Europe around 2009 and I guarantee they would sell out again in next couple of years. People love them and them not taking themsevles seriously is not necessary bad.

Imagine Dragons is what Kurt feared the world would do to Nirvana.
The constant playing of his music everywhere, as soon as a song drops it’s instantly looped and played out within 3 days. Makes you hate hearing yourself…then in turn people hate him too so it’s a lot of stress to handle being hated for trying to make great music when the media are the ones causing you to get hated.
I’ve actually heard people say that exact thing about songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit. It really sucks how a band can get a bad rep because radio stations suck.
Okay Tool is selling out Right now everywhere they go at sixty years old. They don't have an LP right now, or any songs on the radio. Yes steal they SAIL out everywhere they go, they Headlined one of the 2 biggest rock festivals last year and co headlind the other.
And you must not forget. They are the last band in rock and roll to be number one on the planet when they knock the tailor swift off. Period so I just don't know how that is overrated. Maybe a lot of people don't like it. But finally us tool obsessed. Fans have the right to stand up and say this is our Fan Card and it counts dammit.

@@ButterclawEnthusiast I don’t dislike his writing or studio singing. I think it works great with the rest of the band in the studio. But there’s so much footage of him being terrible live. And I get that bands have off nights. But I’ve seen them live twice and it was terrible. Also seen a ton of live performances online where he’s just not good. More bad than good. Makes me wonder how much magic fairy dust they put on his vocal tracks in the studio.
