Dolby Atmos or DTS-X for Gaming at 120Hz Which Do I Prefer & Why?

    I get bad audio lag with atmos, but DTS:X is perfectly in sync. That alone makes atmos a dealbreaker

      Same. I was getting horrible lag on PC with dolby atmos for home theatre. Dtsx for home theatre is solid but I had to buy a second graphics card to use its hdmi to run to the AVR.

    Dolby atmos for single games
    DTS for shooters (steps, shoots, voices, etc)

    I noticed distinctly that Dolby atmos sounds less full than Dolby digital I had to switch the setting through my entire sound system setup. Idk why it sounds so empty on atmos and dts x settings

      Not sure but just on a side note Dolby digital is compressed audio and atmos is uncompressed audio, also Dolby atmos is considered object based 3d surround sound which in theory should sound more fuller; well at least it sounds that way on paper.

      @@dahuchsi He's right, though. Pawnstar thinks the "compressed" sound sounds better because it's "louder" and giving everything a compressed, equalized loudness. It's making quiet sounds loud and loud sounds quieter.
      He's purely basing his opinion on how loud it is.

    The difference with DTS:X upmixing and the DSU is in how they extract the information they send to the height layer speakers. The vanilla DTS:X renderer is far too aggressive and at times with native 5.1/7.1 sources I’ve heard it pull dialog that was being imaged between my center channel and front right channel to the top front height and even the top middle height. The Dolby upmixer uses an exponentially more advanced means of analyzing the native sound source and determining where it should spatially place the accompanying sounds. While it’s a fact your height layer speakers are exponentially more active when using the DTS:X upmixer it’s definitely not more accurate and it’s absolutely horrendous for music compared to the DSU. You also have to take into account that the Series X is not playing back a Dolby True HD native track with Atmos metadata but rather it uses Atmos MAT 2.0 which is can get quite close to say a 4K UHD native Atmos soundtrack but it still falls short overall. What we need is for gaming studios to start taking advantage of the Dolby Atmos renderer when they’re mixing their games, I mean they have over 32 channels to work with in the studio and in my 7.4.6 Atmos system I have yet to hear one game that natively is using top fronts, top middles and top rears. DTS even admitted that their original software was rushed to market to compete with Dolby and that’s why you have DTS:X Pro now (if you have a decent AVR or Pre/Pro) which is what the original DTS X AJD Neural X were supposed to be. But even with the new format, the Series X has significant issues with accurate spatial placement of on screen objects even with the added support for up to 32 channels in the home. If you want to experience a phenomenal upmixing soundstage get yourself something that supports Auro3D in its 10.1 or 13.1 configurations, it’s a dead format here in the US but huge in Germany and Europe. It adds surround heights, front heights, a front center, a top surround quite literally almost mirroring your bed layer of speakers in order to maximize the immersive effect.

    I'm a little late to the convo, but already mentioned, you should give AuRo3D a try for gaming.

    Are you referring to console stuff or something?
    On PC, I have Windows Spatial Audio, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Sound Unbound which includes DTS Headphone: X, DTS: X, and DTS:X Home Theater.
    And on Dolby Atmos, there's 4 sections. Gaming, Movies, Music, Voice. Each one has settings for "Detailed", "Balanced" or "Warm" and for gaming, a 4th option called "Performance Mode" for enhanced spatial accuracy. And, then you can make custom equalizer settings, too.
    I have an Asus B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi II with the S1220a codec and dual OP amps so I use Realtek Audio software to control the amps and Sonic Studio III to enhance other settings.
    I like 'em all except Windows Spatial audio lol.
    Edit: But, for me, I prefer Dolby Atmos for Headphones with my Creative HS65 Surround headphones. And I don't use the USB plug for my headphones for "virtualized 7.1 surround sound." I use the onboard audio so I can use all those features I listed, including being able to use the "dual OP amps" and set them to extreme so my headphones can get loud enough to damage themselves.

      In this case for console, and for my pc has Dolby atmos capabilities for my home theater surround sounds.

    Sounds like a pretty jank setup to be honest man. I just change the settings in windows and xbox to have dolby/dts all the time, with or without headphones. Even works well on my 2.1 speakers. However, it only adds some space to the 2.1 speakers, not much positional audio. Dolby, is far more heavy handed with the bass. Like way more. Dts sounds like stereo in a wide open space. Its far easier to pick out positionals, and gauge their distance compared to dolby. It sounds to me, like you have something wonky going on. Because something like 90% of things I have read, gamers prefer dts over dolby.
    I own both, and tested both in movies, music, and cod mw2. DTS is the clear winner for me. Better soundspace, and more natural sounding audio closer to the original. Dolby sounds garbled to me in comparison with their heavy handed bass. Im not trying to mess with an equalizer all day.

    What about with headphones like the steelseries arctis Pro? Is dolby atmos better or DTX?

      Don’t have experience on headphones because I don’t want to pay a subscription to dts:xor atmos when my surround sound is better without subscription. But I’m sure I would prefer dts:x over atmos in any aspect, thanks for the question

      @@hoodeddragons I brought both and I'm liking dolby so far. Dtsx seems louder but louder doesn't mean better. I'll have to test it more lol. Thanks anyway

      Is that with speakers or headphones?
      I prefer Dolby Atmos for headphones as far as sound and sound placement.
      "Loudness" isn't an issue with my ROG SupremeFX 7.1-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC S1220A with Dual OP Amps cranked up to Extreme pushing my Corsair HS65 Surround headphones with all the power they need. Asus STRIX B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi II mobo. It has great onboard audio with lots of software to control so many aspects, including the output of the amps. These headphones are 32 ohms, so not the highest resistance which is good, but still uses 50mm drivers which need a bit of power to really push. And push them this board can do...
      Ya gotta download all your drivers and also your software to control your hardware. Realtek drivers for me, Realtek Audio Console, Sonic Suite III, etc. etc. THEN you choose between Dolby Atmos for headphones or DTS Headphones: X.
      This isn't to say I don't like DTS Headphones: X. I use it now and then but I always find myself coming back to Dolby. To each their own, of course.
      We need more games building one or the other into their engine. So few games do this. Like Metro Exodus EE natively supports Dolby Atmos.
