Well, the Jedi taught the same thing, but they don't use the Force the same way. Where the sith see it as a mere tool to be used, Jedi show a religious respect to it, and they respect life, even the life of their ennemies. They COULD crush you under a ton of rocks, but they would prefer to weaken you up to the point you agree to surrender. You may think it's a stupid, but remember that until the battle of Geonosis, Jedi were considered, and considered themselves, as the most powerful beings in existence. They were basically superheroes dealing amongst mere mortal. They HAD an advantage from the start. They were rarely pushed to their limits and never truly considered to be in a "It's me or him" situation. And their reputation was most of the time enough to intimidate their opponents, they didn't have to show off their powers to be feared or respected.
Sith don't think that way. Sith are Skyrim players exploiting the hell out of the game and using the console commands because they can, except the game is their reality.

Speaking of Anakin and the mentality he develops over the years on the Dark and Light side of the Force, there's a novel written by Ryder Windham called "The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader", which recounts the life of the Chosen One since his arrival on Tatooine at the age of 3 until his death on the Death Star II, showing Anakin's thoughts about the events and characters he witnesses and meets throughout his life. It is a quite emotional and complex book despite being intended for a young audience. Truly reccommended!

In Palpatine’s case, his saber was meant to showcase his grandiosity by using Electrum, a metal rarer than gold in the Star Wars universe. The only Jedi to use Electrum were Council Members only to signify rank. This is why Windus lightsaber changes between TPM and AOTC. He created a new design as a council member.

    • @krel3358

I think coming more to the point of it, that its like the art of war by that Chinese guy where actively engaging in physical combat with your opponent is the last thing you want to do because it puts you on an even footing where you know what kind of tools your opponent can employ. When you engage in say the battlefield of subversion and sabotage, operating in the shadows as Palpatine did, he had all the tools at his disposal to contend against the Jedi while never actually physically fighting against them until he got to a point where he had already won and the physical confrontation was just a formality for him to mock them. The Dark side is not just about casting lightning bolts at someone its spell casting in a more subtle manner of manipulating your opponents using trickery and words. Palpatine coming to the Jedi as their friend while duping them into serving his interests was the highest act of the dark side as by getting the Jedi to take part in the war they became defacto dark side users themselves as they were no longer peace keepers but active warriors fighting in political power battles trying to maintain the status quo of a corrupt beurocracy. That is fundamentally the way Palpatine beat the Jedi is they were no longer operating under the light side of the force or operating within balance or in harmony with their own principles. You can even say this when say Obi-Wan goes to kill Anakin, revenge is not the Jedi way but Obi-Wan is there to kill Anakin and take his wife from him, he then insults and goads Anakin into getting into a fight with him. Thats not very Jedi like is it?

I've always found Palpatine hating lightsabers and dueling quite interesting. On one hand, he has a point in the sense on that the force being one's greatest tool/ally instead of using a lightsaber. The Force can do much more than a lightsaber ever could and I think that is why Palapatine hated the weapon so much. No doubt this mindset came from Plagueis, since he too disliked dueling with lightsabers despite his skills. He once called them "tedious." But on the other hand, I believe in the balance of using both the force and the lightsaber.

@@brayden2254 yeah im positive that Lucas even stated somewhere at some time that vader was Palpatines superior in lightsaber dueling by the time we see him in any of the movies.
Which makes sense considering, pre-suit, anakin was the best duelist in the galaxy.
He bested dooku, who remarks in the lore that anakin was a blur of blue light he was so fast.
He was so aggressive and strong, that basically the only person who could take him in a duel and win would've Been kenobi, and that's only for 2 reasons. 1, kenobi was the master of the Ultimate defense, while anakin was the master of unstoppable offense. Unstoppable force, immovable object.
2, obi Wan knew anakin very personally as a person and duelist. They both knew each others techniques and styles inside and out.
Making each other way more predictable for one another than a usual duel.
Hence why the duel looks almost like a dance at times. Partners who know each others rhythm and moves, make a dance when they work together.
Anakin would've beaten the likes of sidious, Yoda, windu at this time in his life. Not easy fights certainly not.
But anakins too aggressive and physically strong for yoda to match, especially since yodas form of dueling is exceptionally draining on the user due to the flips and high mobility using the force.
He would've out aggressed sidious, putting him on defense the entire duel. And clearly, defense ain't papa palpy's style.
Windu is a tough match up since at this point anakin is being devoured by his dark side. But how far can windu really take a duel with anakin when anakins fighting at the pace we see in his mustafar fight. Windu just can't keep pace with that.
This is lightsaber dueling specific though. Throw in actual force usage like in this fight, and yes anakin would lose to Palpatine and yoda. Not windu though. He seems more of duelist than a force focused person like sidious and yoda.
So all that background in being a skilled duelist, plus being a clone wars general/veteran.
Then you consider that vader is actively hunting and dueling jedi all the time and Palpatine just sits in his gaming chair all day, makes a lot of sense that vader surpassed sidious as a duelist.

Ofc in episode 6 he may have become too old for fencing (he was using a cane to walk after all) and in *burp* episode 9 he just came back to be basically a zombie, but he was to proud of his mastery of the Force to even think about picking up a light saber.
You'd think, from seeing Yoda fight in the prelogy, that age wouldn't affect Palpatine that much, but Palpatine was a human and he was 84 yo in episode 6. An old man badly injured during his fight against Windu on top of that. He is still incrdibly powerful ofc, but he moves with way less ease in episode 6 than before (as does Yoda, now that I think about it => yes he is a puppet and not a CGI model but it is stil relevant in terms of storytelling).

Palpatine was right in many ways because Anakin had never used the force to its absolute full potential. He only used the force to enhance his physical attributes rather than anything else so pretty much he was focusing on one half of himself while completely disregarding the other. He always focused on lightsaber combat and treated his lightsaber as his source of power and weapon rather than the force itself because as Qui Gon once stated "the force is what gives a Jedi their power" which if you think about it was one of the key reasons he lost to obi wan on Mustafar. Obi wan despite having a low midichlorian count he mastered the force that helped him keep up with Anakin and even fight someone as dangerous and powerful as general grievous. If Anakin even dedicated the same amount of time and patience to mastering the force as obi wan or as Sidious mentioned, Anakin wouldn't have lost and his skills as a lightsaber duelist would have been far beyond anything imaginable on top of his force powers being that of a God.

Anakin's problem was his personality. He knew how to fight and how to control his abilities, he did it many times before, but he often let his temper get the best of him, or took stupid risks to show off because he underestimated his opponent (the case with Obi-Wan over and over again).
He was the complete opposite of Obi-Wan who was always calm and level headed and always played it safe in battle, biding his time and tiring his opponent out until an opportunity presented itself rather than trying to end it in one big flashy attack.
I recall for example his fight with Dooku. He was calm and focused and he won without breaking a sweat. Or against Asajj, the fight was dragging on and he was having trouble with her for quite a while and getting frustrated and clumsy...then something clicked, he focused, and in seconds it became obvious she was completely outclassed. He had the power and the skill, but he was always emotionally unstable and immature. You take Anakin and remove those emotional hangups...and you get Luke.

Anakin never grew past using his lightsaber for aggression, which is why he never developed that understanding or the rank of master.

He had to modify his form V fighting style to suit his physical abilities and limitations. Thankfully he’s mastered what Sidious taught him. Vader I believe could outfight Sidious in a duel later on. Because Vader was regarded as the best lightsaber duelist of his age. Sidious only had one thing above him and that was the force. BUT Vader is officially confirmed in both continuities (Legends canon and Disney canon) that he is 80% as powerful as Sidious. That’s actually REALLY close. I still want to see a live action version of Sidious' massacre of The Gran on Corusant. (Also, if a live action adaptation of the Darth Plagueis novel were to be made, I think Bill Skarsgard would be an excellent choice for a younger Palpatine. Your thoughts?)

The Jedi didn't over rely on their light sabers, Anakin did. Great Jedi like Obi-Wan (that left Vader for dead twice) had such a strong connection to the force that it was essentially the force that fought through him. Anakin on the other hand had an inferior connection to the force. He could USE it greatly, but it didn't work THROUGH him.

The philosophy of the Sith is so interesting it’s like saying the lightsaber is not the weapon, we are the weapon it shows that they’re not just simple Dark Jedi but a distinct order with very different principles.

It's funny how Obi-Wan spews that "We only use lightsabers cause we're awesome and prove we're better than that." high horse Jedi speech, but when push came to shove and he had to take Grievous down, he used a Blaster
