I do like how Luke told the guards to escape the Death Star and even help one of them escape does show his compassion and care for even his enemies
This is the Luke we deserved in the sequels. A compassionate man who would help others.
He didn't waste time on pity when he sent so many living victims into the Sarlaac's maw not long before his sojourn aboard the Death Star 2 😱
@@neilmurphy966 He warned Jabba and by extension his lackeys more than once. Once the choice was made by the Hutt for himself and his retinue, Luke acted to save his friends. Jabba and his pals thought it better to have a laugh than act in their own self-interest, right up until it was too late.

@@The_Lucent_Archangel I have to agree with you on this one. He does give multiple warnings. However, that's not the case with the gomorrean guard that Luke force chokes.

I did not know it started THAT quickly.
Just goes to show that the Emperor *was* the Empire. Everything about the system was devoted to him in one shape or another. The second he died everything began to fall apart because really there was nothing else that held The Empire together.
Is because palpatine mainly appointed 2 types of people to important positions of power: the overly ambitious and the blindly loyal.
When he died the ambitious moffs and admirals decided to carve territory in a gambit to become the new emperor, meanwhile the blindly loyal obeyed operation cinder which means they destroyed many loyal imperial worlds.

Luke telling the guards to escape with their lives and saving RG is really wholesome and shows just the kind of compassionate and caring Jedi he is.
Exactly! Not the kind of guy that tries to kill instead of save his nephew.
It shows how naive he is. Saving a guy who will grieve over a dead emperor who was terrorizing the galaxy. But it's also just a continuation of the general rhetorical argument RotJ is making, that if you do nonviolent protest hard enough, your enemy will come over to your side. An argument that very often does not hold up in RL history when considering powerful entities that are as cruel as the empire is in SW.

Kind of reminds me of the guards who stood outside of Stalin’s room when he had a stroke and dared not enter for a whole day.
And when they returned, stalin had died, same with the emperor. "Ironic"

That’s a very interesting comparison.
Its the ultimate flaw of authoritarian leadership; eventually all of the lack of trust and atmosphere of fear causes the whole hierarchy or organization to implode.

Honestly would be an interesting story about a Red Guard trying to find his purpose in the galaxy. Going in adventures, participating in epic battles, character cameos, and possibly a really nice end.
The former protector of the Emperor now living a peaceful life, with a wife and child on a humble home, sitting on a bench while watching the sun set.
Basically just Kir Kanos to a degree
If he joined the New Republican he would immediately be put into their Special Forces or Intelligence, his knowledge of the Emperor's operations surpass no else. He would be a great asset to the New Republic.
It could be titled "My Honor is My Loyalty".

I once comtemplated a story about a Royal Guard that basically escaped the destruction of the Second Death Star and basically runs around in patched up Royal Guard gear fighting pirates and criminal syndicates and former Empire associates.
This was before this story the video shown here was made...

Almost every NPC in a game series called the The Legend of Heroes: Trails has some kind of background story that can be explored over the course of multiple games. Here's one of the examples in the Trails series that I can think of off the top of my head (there are some spoilers here for these NPCs, but I doubt most people care about NPC spoilers, sooo...):
In the prologue for Trails in the Sky FC, there is a young man named Armand who, if you choose to talk to him, will mention a young woman named Ellie who he is interested in. If you continue to talk to him through various points in the prologue (every time the story advances the NPCs in Trails will have new dialog/be doing something different than they were doing before), you'll eventually reach a point where he asks her to date him. Hesitant at first, she eventually agrees, and later on in Trails in the Sky FC you can meet them in another part of the country of Liberl (which is where the Sky games take place in), seeing that they had grown closer to one another throughout the course of the story. In the direct sequel to Trails in the Sky FC, called Trails in the Sky SC, there is a side quest you can do that, upon completion, will see them get married. In the direct sequel to Sky SC, called Trails in the Sky the 3rd, you can find them discussing buying a house and starting a family. Armand's only regret is that his father was unable to attend his wedding. This is mainly due to the fact that his parents divorced when he was a child, and he hasn't seen his father since.
Aside from the side quests you can do for Armand/Ellie, there really isn't any reason to interact with them throughout the course of the Sky trilogy. They'll inevitably end up doing all of this stuff on their own, regardless of whether or not you choose to interact with them. But choosing to do so gives you a fair bit of insight into who they are as characters, how they eventually fell in love, and how/why they got married.
The next game in the series called Trails from Zero takes place in Crossbell (which neighbors Liberl). Throughout the course of the story, you eventually meet a man named Gable. And while you don't know it yet when you first meet him, he is in fact Armand's father. While his role in the story is actually more important than Armand's/Ellie's role is in the Sky trilogy, in the end he is still mostly a background NPC outside of one or two very specific instances. Gable is actually part of one of two major political factions in Crossbell, but due to a corruption scandal that he was involved in prior to the start of the Zero's prologue, he is forced to fake an illness and hide in a hospital throughout the course of the game. Your interactions with him are limited to whether or not you bother to visit his hospital room whenever you drop by. If you choose to do so, you quickly find out that he is a creep attempting to leverage his political power to get away with behaving however he wants. It doesn't really go well for him though, as the nurses are aware that he isn't actually sick, and thus don't put up with his nonsense. There eventually comes a moment in the story where he is forced to accept that he has been abandoned by the political faction that he once supported, which leads into the direct sequel for this game.
In the direct sequel to Trails from Zero called Trails to Azure, you meet him again (this time you are required to by the story), living in the downtown district of Crossbell. Initially abrasive towards everyone he meets due to his status hitting rock bottom, you eventually see signs of him becoming more and more humble throughout the course of the game if you choose to interact with him, even warming up to his new neighbors who he had (at one point in time) saw as being beneath him. But the real turning point for his character is when Armand and Ellie, along with their new baby, come to Crossbell in an attempt to find him. He is initially terrified by thoughts of seeing his son who he admits he had abandoned and attempts to go into hiding out of shame. It isn't until you go through the effort to reunite them via a quest that you find out Armand just wanted his father to meet his wife and son. It is a touching reunion, especially so if you bother to interact with all of the characters involved throughout the course of these 5 games.
Gable actually returns in future entries in the series, but his role is largely diminished by that point. Again, you don't have to interact with any of these characters outside of some minor story events and optional sidequests. It's something that is easily missed by most people playing the games. And there are a ton of other NPC stories like this in the Trails series.
In conclusion: Star Wars isn't the only series out there that explores obscure background characters. Even a series like Trails, which I doubt most of the people reading this have heard of, can give indepth backstories for background characters. =P

RG is at a moral quandary of a crossroads as having giving everything to serving and protecting the emperor as a royal guard. Has everything he believed in and torn down by the events of the second death star duel and the actions of Luke. No wonder he had no idea as to what to do next in the aftermath of such a life changing moment.
Anyone here read the Crimson Empire comics? Those were pretty cool. Made me respect the Red Guards a lot more when I learned they trained with Vader.

I read all the issues and they were awesome, I still wonder where Kanos is these days, hope he never ran into the yuuzhan vong.

Kir Kanos was a legitimate badass and I wish they’d used him more
Darth Vader didn't really train with the Royal Guards, he was more of a motivator to them by killing off the best while the rest watched so that they'd do even better. But Darth Vader does personally oversees the building of their Custom TIE Interceptors.
This is what happened when you are raised to follow a supposed all-powerful and all-knowing ruler with blind loyalty and obedience.

Kinda neat Luke saved one of the guards at the end and aided in his escape because of that.
Hope the guard was able to find peace with himself and start a new life in spite of the first death of Palpatine and the fall of the Galactic Empire!

But that said, I do still like TFA, but TLJ and TROS should have been far better.
@kingwilly8041 Same thing happened in Legends and, if I remember correctly, Palps actually died and came back a couple of times there, unlike the current canon where he only came back once.
@CloneCommanderCrater1102 I had heard that, and I also heard people say not everything in Legends was good just because it was Legends. You have to pick and choose and, as usual, disney didn't choose correctly.

Wait... so you mean to tell me that Luke Skywalker was kind enough to save some random royal guard whose directive was to kill him... but not his own nephew?
Well as little as the plot point in TLJ can be justified, it should be clarified that Ben’s side of the story was “yeah Luke straight up tried to kill me” but what actually happened was that Luke activated his lightsaber in a split second of worry, immediately got over it (and to be clear, never tried to attack him), and got seen by Ben before he could leave, who then assumed the worst.
Doesn’t make things much better but still, he never tried to kill Ben.

Being the Elites of the Imperial soldiers, I thought that they would've had former Imperial Guards leading the First Order in the Sequels. Of course there were Admirals, Grand Admirals, and Moffs to contend with but the IGs should've been a force to reckon with.
The is a story in ACPOV return of the jedi about one of the characters in the first order.
Being good combatants wouldn't necessarily make them good leaders.
For some reason i feel happy for him because you see, he gained a new life like shedding his identity and became a wondering mercenary for hire, life is not wasted but renewed
I always enjoy hearing the stories you find espeicially ones like these , i feel it gives more depth to the universe in star wars and shows a lot more how the main story affects other minor characters throughout the galaxy, regardless of their place in it.
Nice to know the guard escaped DS2. I feel like too many of these stories I've heard about of side characters getting some limelight just end with them being killed shortly after their revelation or whatever like some grand cosmic joke

Luke telling the Royal Guards to flee for their lives is so perfectly in-character. It reminds me of his appearance in EA Battlefront II.

In the old continuity since it took 6 years to beat the Empire after Endor the royal guards split into factions since a lot of the empire did splinter, but when Palpatine came back they united like the rest of the Empire under him. All the Empire needed was an Heir to the Empire

This would make a good movie, two Royal Guards going through the gruelling training, doing missions together becoming good comrades and on their final one, it ends in betrayal and death, with one left to wonder what happens next.
I always did wonder if any imperials tried facing luke & vader during the battle. I remember fighting them and their deadly carrot spears

I now feel like there needs to be a Star Wars video game that has a level Exclusively about trying to save Vader aboard the second death star. As Luke is struggling to get Vader to Safety, we see imperials either stopping to fight him, or possibly getting stuck where they are, and Luke has the choice to abandon them, or to help them escape. This intern would add to the lives saved by Luke that day

Can you imagine how terrifying Luke skywalker would’ve been for the average imperial after this? He went into a room with the two most powerful men in the galaxy and, as far as anyone else knows, was the only one to leave.
Read the Truce at Bakura (an EU book that takes place directly after this) Many Rebels were in awe of Luke after this final showdown

Makes me think of the stories where guards who werent present on the death star either took their own lives or swore revenge against the rebel alliance and joined imperial forces in fighting the new republic.

Outside the throne room, the guards were thinking... man, I really wish I could turn my head in this thing.
A mini-series or something like that following “RG” in the immediate post-imperial era would kinda be fire. Imagine seeing this guy trying to adjust and move on, but not let anyone find out about his past either. Would be a cool concept.

Don’t know if it’s cannon anymore but years ago I read that the royal gaurds were twins that had to rely on each other to survive training and on the last day had to battle each other the the death and the winner become a royal guard for me that was a true geek moment and have never forgotten it as someone once said impressive most impressive
This is better writing than the Last Jedi throne room fight, why would Snokes guards start fighting after their leader was dead? What did they think would happen if they won? Kylo was the obvious successor.

Crimson empire was a fantastic comic series from the 90s. Kir Kanos and his buddy Carnor Jax. Would make for a dope ass One season series.
I really hate how they give Royal Guards both a story about the most insane of training regimens, making Clone troopers look like babies… but also make them cannon fodder.

The story itself is from the book "From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi". Many of the images used for the visuals come from various comics, but the main ones used are from an obscure Korean comic released shortly after Disney bought Lucasfilm. The exact name of the series is "Star Wars: LINE Webtoon" if you want to look more into it.

3:07 Unbreakable bond? I don't think there is trust or bond between Sith lord and Sith apprentice. There is fear. Apprentice's goal is to kill the Lord and become a new Sith lord. Lots of sith apprentice secretly train their apprentice for that purpose. So they rise to level of Sith Lord and their apprentice becomes Sith. And If Lord finds stronger apprentice they get rid of the existing one and get the stronger one as apprentice, even if he knows, apprentice will try to kill him one day.

one of the best non-main character SW comics was Crimson Empire and Crimson Empire II. Kir Kanos was a memorable character.
Remember me old comic series, my fav from SW, Crimson Empire, where last loyal guard hunt who guard who betray Palp by kill his clones and themselve decide to be next emperor.

Kneeling over his father in grief, and even saving the life of the royal guard, his enemy, is so Luke.

Ironic to Palpatine, Vader was able to continue the Rule of Two, then died minutes after being the master
Kinda reminds me of the Bible Story of Ehud and King Eglon of Moab, where Ehud was sent to deliver the Tribe of Benjamin's tribute to the fat king, and had a dagger with him. When he arrived, he told the king he had a message from God for the king to hear in private. After having him searched for a weapon on his left side, the King ordered everybody out. And once they were alone, Ehud revealed the dagger on his right side, the guards making a huge mistake by assuming he was right-handed like everybody else when Ehud was in reality a lefty. He stabbed Eglon right in the stomach, the sheer fat swallowing the blade all the way even with the hilt, before Ehud locked the doors and escaped in the sewer. Apparently, the smell was so bad all Eglon's servants and guards assumed the king was going to the bathroom, so nobody realized what happened until a long time later.
