As someone who mainly plays metal, I started practicing latin grooves a few weeks ago and I haven‘t had that much fun in way too long. Needless to say, I freaked out when I saw you posting yourself practising this on Instagram! Gonna give this a shot right now!
Love it, and thanks for the new groove to practice. World grooves are great to learn not just for independence but the feel and the immersion into different cultures of music. Plus how applicable they are in a drum solo setting. Next time you’re playing out and they go around the room introducing the band and you get to do your little 30 second solo, lead into something like Steve Gadds “late in the evening” Mozambique….Crowd will love it!
That’s exactly where I am am right now, learning singles, doubles and paradiddles over samba on the feet. Literally had the same through of self doubt 😅 thanks for the lesson
Awesome, Mike! I´m from South America and I´m convinced about how useful is to learn different grooves like these and to apply them to the music you play on a regular basis giving it a more "spicy" feel whether is rock, jazz, funk, etc. You are a great teacher, man! Thanks for posting this.
Okay so, I just started (four hours ago) to look into Latin grooves for the next bigger theme to practice, and you uploading exactly this video exactly now, I think it's a sign. :D Last time I tried, paradiddle over samba was not going well for me.. Anyway, thanks Mike!
Another great 'demonstration ', Mike... and, yes, it really challenges independence, which, as you say, and I think we all know, can only improve your skill on the kit, and translate to all genres of music. Thank you.
I learned to play Songo from your old Gospel Chops video. It was the only video I found that really broke it down enough for me to learn it. The purple and neon green walls were lit.
You want to really change your game? Get an Off-Set kick drum pedal. It physically eliminates stereo phase issues between kick & snare for your overhead microphones, so they will be rock solid center imaged, plus allows better playing ergonomics.
Thanks Mike for an awesome demonstration. World music is really cool. My brain does not go well with this. It's just way too much independence involved. But i really like the way it can sound with orchestrations and dynamics. I remember my first teacher around 1988/89 showing me the basic paradiddle/samba groove, on snare/kick/hihat, wich I spent quite much time trying to learn. I got it to sound like a total train wreck at best before I gave up. Still can't do it today 34 years later. Too much stuff is going on at the same time.
Yes Mike, Yes I Do! Definitely need to learn this stuff and open up my independence and vocabulary on the kit! Thanks as always for everything you do for us family members! 🙏🍵
That's so great to hear Dan! I would love for you to set a goal for yourself to upload a video to the Family page by October 1st of you playing the groove from lesson 6 in Mozambique Course 1. Your In?
@@mikeslessons Absolutely! I need something like this to push myself! Thank you for the inspiration and the push/challenge! Time to get to work! 🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵
Jason Bittner said during his Drumeo lesson that even though he's a metal drummer the most influential and important concept he learned during school was a Latin pattern. Try out everything at least once and you might find something you enjoy and can use for other styles.
Man, you make it look so easy. I love the way you play drums. Someone once said (I believe it was a comment on 'Fool in the rain' drums only video by John Bonham) and they didn't understand all the hype about him (J. B.) and that you have an equal if not greater talent than him. I understand what that person meant. You're an inspiration. You take drumming to a whole different level. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your content, and all of your channel, even if it's all theory for me, as it goes beyond what I am able to do on the drums. So yeah, keep it up! You rock, melodically. 👍
At the beginning of the video my mind automatically shifted the downbeat by an eigth note, I heard the "1 and" as the "1" and the hihats as offbeats. Now THAT's some spicy sauce! ... As always: great video, Mr. Johnston! =)
Agree! I’m an absolute beginner at samba, and it’s already changed my fills, I sometimes just do something, think “what the hell was that”, and i realise it’s some samba related pattern that just flew out of my hands and made noise. And the 4 limb independence- definitely. That opening to “a pattern per limb” is a whole other level of independence from your typical rock groove, and you can then do some funky stuff with a groove whilst keeping most of it simple.
Mike - I want to send you a copy of my new Afrobeats book please! But I can't get any of your team to send me any details. Can you help? PS you'd love it!
That's because there's no team, there is just me. You can email me anytime mike@mikeslessons.com or you can ship it to the studio - 705 Gold Lake Drive #320, Folsom CA, 95630
Sorry Mike, I had to unlike this video for a split second there, just so I could like it again! Great lesson, and really reinvigorating the drive to push my musicality on the kit!
6:53 - My fav Mike referencing my fav Mike. My life is complete.

Aija, that's so awesome to hear. A sign indeed. Hopefully hearing my nightmare "paradiddles over the samba" story made you feel a little better, lol.

That's a sweet samba rhythm. Nice video.
Glad to see the ExpII back in action. Is there a lesson or course at Mike's Lessons that works on the paradiddle never the samba?
That sounded brilliant, thanks for sharing that. Bob M.
