And here I am after years and years of blast beats, double pedal patterns, meshuggah stuff and 3 recorded albums of death metal learning the subtleties of ghost notes and shuffle grooves.
Sounds awesome and the feel is there in your playing. Even though I prefer to create my own exercises and stuff to play at this point in my playing, getting notifications of a new video of yours ALWAYS brings inspiration. Thank you!
I've been playing drums for... How long now? 23 years or something? And even the paradiddle-diddle groove had me figuring it out for a minute or two. Like of course I know the rudiment itself like a second nature, but I honestly never ever thought about making it a triplet groove. Feel kinda embarrassed by that, but there you go. I'm not even going to try the para-paradiddle right now and DEFINITELY not the inverted doubles one, but I am sure as hell practicing those in the coming days and weeks. All of them sounded surprisingly great with the inverted doubles groove being a no joke jaw dropper. It's not every day that I find something on RUclips that's THIS simple idea-wise, but SO challenging execution-wise. Love it. Thanks for this.
Thank you. This is fantastic. Drummers always say “there’s so much you can do with “even a paradiddle” thanks for actually doing So and showing us all.
Not that I’m much of a teacher, but when I’ve worked on basic sticking and rudiments with folks, not many grasped the purpose of the paradiddle. THIS however, will be my proof to them how useful (and fun) it is.
As I was watching this, I enjoyed it it made me smile, but also is the way you’re teaching the lesson you’re giving is confidence you telling us don’t rush yourself slow down and take your time that’s what I got out of it and also sometimes we make mistakes we all do even you did in the video that’s what you were teaching & and also you’re a really good teacher you motivate us and also the way you were showing how to do that it was really cool and it sounds awesome yes rudimental who some people take rudiments for granted and also rudiments can you use around the drum get so much like you were teaching us. I appreciate that.
I took this lesson on your course so I was prepared for the first 3 grooves, but the inverted doubles one made me realize I'm not out of the woods yet 😅
Ewwwwww SNAP! These are definitely going to be fun and challenging. I just started learning the Purdie Shuffle, (YES, I’ve never played it hehe), so this little lesson is going to fit right in. You played this so well Mike. Your ability and hard work that you’ve put it makes these difficult grooves sound incredible and easy to play. Strap on your seat belt my fellow skin slayers. These are going to take some time. 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Great challenge this one on triplets with that shuffle feel. To get the booms spot on, I found that just slowing your uTube video to half speed worked best for me…….and yes, we still love you! Peter
Great video Mike! Definitely some spice with those metric modulated doubles at the end 😅 Gonna add this to the list and hopefully knock it out one day. What would be a great song for us to play these shuffles with?
That last sticking, the inverted doubles, sounds like a groove I have been trying to demystify for a few years now! Listen to Nate Smith’s “Pocket Change”, he does something very similar, if not identical. Thanks for the lesson!!
Hey Mike! Awesome way to present these! Isolating parts of the groove! Thanks for sharing your approach. It really helps me as a teacher (and I’m still a student too! 😉) Ok one question off topic… What’s your current cymbal setup? Is that your signature pack? I’m thinking of getting a set for studio. I have very complete Paiste and Bosphorus cymbal sets but really love the sound you get with Meinl!
Those are challenging! I got the first two down ok, more or less. The third one is harder than frozen apples! After some fumbling around, I got so I could play it slowly, but it's tricky! That one needs some work. These are good exercises for anyone who wants to get over the tendency of the right hand and right foot to play together. Sometimes the right foot and right hand are playing together (easy) but then two beats later the right foot is playing with the left hand. Also, sometimes the right foot is playing on unaccented ghost notes. That's tricky too.
Mike do you by chance have a Groovescribe for that last one? I’ve finally got the accented left after the ghost note feeling good but I’m not keeping place very well. For some reason it’s warping my brain.😂
"harder than frozen apples" "dorked by the dangling ship lap of doom" I love all the silly phrases Mike throws in, especially the various forms of shiggitta boops 😂
Been enjoying your videos recently and think you are a sick drummer much respect .... but could we have some tabs ? im very much a visual learner and need to count being only playing for 3 years
Man, I have taught these thousands of times over the past 3 decades. There's always someone that hasn't learned them yet so they deserve to be taught over and over again. It's all about bringing the information that we all have access to to new people in a new way :)
If im really diggin deep to get a sticking dialed in my eyes are shut. I see im not alone 😑 thank you for acknowledging that it's difficult. People need to know it takes time. 👍
Heck yeah every time it’s a habit to play the halftime shuffle to a halftime nanigo to a triplet groove and go around to a dancehall … all in one tempo
Well...thank you for reminding how low my metronome goes. I knocked the first two out like a damn pro. Then I drove off a cliff. This is amazing, and I needed this. Been very uninspired lately. Now I'm mad, that works for me.
Practicing 6 stroke rolls with a right hand lead and a left hand lead will help this( inverted double triplets ) . That’s really all it is played back to back .
And here I am after years and years of blast beats, double pedal patterns, meshuggah stuff and 3 recorded albums of death metal learning the subtleties of ghost notes and shuffle grooves.
Wow yes, those inverted doubles demand proper respect! Great grooves and challenges. This video was a blast, Mike!
Sounds awesome Mike. Looks like a fun one to work on. You rock!!
Much appreciated my friend! 🙏🍵🍵🙏

Love this and something I’m currently working on. Can’t wait to chew on this for a while!
YES! And please don’t hate me when you get to those inverted doubles, lol.
Never hate, just 100% fun!!!!
0:32 Oh come on now, who doesn't love Mike? 😄
Awe! lol. Much appreciated my friend :)
Cracking grooves & variations on the halftime shuffle, Mike.
I really like the way you break things down in your videos.
Much respect, brutha!
I think I’ve watched for around 10 years…. I don’t even I know anymore. You’ve always been brilliant mate. Thank you f❤
Love your lessons Mike!!! Thank you for making us better
Thank YOU for taking the time to watch the lessons!
@@mikeslessons thanks for taking the time to reply🙏🏻

Mike where I love about your lessons as you show the reality of it
It amazes me, every time I watch you Mike either here on RUclips or on your website, how you make drumming really fun. Thank you 👍

That inverted doubles groove is SO sick!

My brother! You are about to have one hell of an adventure. It will be a blast. Enjoy Justin, and THANKS for the kind words.
Killer twists on the halftime shuffle Mike, thx!!!
Thanks Mike! Gonna work on these!

Holy sizzle-chain! How did you know I needed some triplet grooves in my diet?! Thank you Mike......so, so, so cool!

That's absolutely amazing stuff
Way Too Cool Mr Johnston, Everytime I watch your videos I learn something new that was absolutely superb💎👏💎🥁🔥🥁💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

Thank you for not going too slowly . Inspiring
I made it to the end with ya Mike, drum brothers forever 🤣
Whew that last one ! Haha. Great video! Will spend some time with these for sure. Thanks Mike!
I like to play the double paradiddle groove with the kick pattern from RATM People of the son. It slaps!
A well edited video using craftsman like lead in sound links. Nothing more needs to be said about the marvellous quality of pedagogy.
Is sheet music for this available anywhere? I've always found it easy to look at sheet music to see where things line up

6:11 “I got dorked by the dangling ship lap of doom” should be my first tattoo.
And a great and tastefull musician
Ciao fabio
This is a half-time Shuffle like feels I like it
Just noticed the new tats. Good lesson.
LMAO! "You need to practice...." Awesome vid, Mike!
Been enjoying your videos recently and think you are a sick drummer much respect .... but could we have some tabs ? im very much a visual learner and need to count being only playing for 3 years
What's the name of your metronome app?
It’s in the description of this video. Hope that helps :)
About 4 or 5 years ago you taught these already?
You can always purchase a membership and gain access to more content if you're that interested 😮

А что ноты перестал писать? Сидеть, и как пионер снимать визуально я уже не буду и её хочу. Шоу маст гоу он... 🫤
