As a Pole, what would you say if Denmark charged Polish ships money for passage through the natural waterways of the Store Belt and Øresund? In principle, it would be like Turkey asking for money from ships sailing across the Bosphorus. There are differences in international law between artificial and natural sea waterways. Natural sea waterways are considered international waterways around the world and are free of charge even if they are located in national territories. The only thing that states can require is the obligation to have a pilotage and that pilotage services have to be paid for by vessels. The situation is different with the use of artificial waterways (Canals), as these have to be financed and maintained by the fees. I live directly on the Kiel Canal and know what constant maintenance work is necessary. That's why a small sailing boat pays 12 euros and a 200 m large freighter costs 2,500 to 3,000 euros. In addition, there are similarly high costs for pilots and canal helmsman. That looks at 42,000 passages like a lot of money the state makes, but at least two-thirds of it goes to maintaining the canal. It will be similar with the Suez Canal, because it often silts up and the water depth has to be constantly adjusted. Greetings to the neighboring country.

What a nightmare. Reform the Montreal Treaty instead. Goodness, there is nothing more important than potable drinking water and good agricultural land. How dangerous are these "Strong men".
The Bosphorus, through which approximately 43,000 ships pass annually, is a natural waterway with a narrowest point of 698 m. The increase in tonnage in ship traffic, the increase in ship sizes as a result of technological developments, and the increase in the number of ships (tankers) carrying fuel and other similar dangerous/toxic substances pose a great pressure and threat on Istanbul. In the Bosphorus, there are sharp turns, strong currents, and vertically intersecting urban maritime traffic with transit ship traffic that risk waterway transportation. Hundreds of thousands of residents live on both sides of the Bosphorus. The Bosphorus is a place of commerce, life and transit for millions of Istanbulites during the day. The Bosphorus is becoming more dangerous every year in terms of the risks posed by the passing ship traffic. The annual number of ship transits, which was 3-4 thousand 100 years ago, has increased and has reached 45-50 thousand today. Due to the one-way traffic organization implemented to increase navigational safety, the average waiting time in the Bosphorus for large ships is approximately 14.5 for each ship stuck in hold. is the hour. The waiting time can sometimes take 3-4 days or even a week depending on the ship traffic and weather conditions and sometimes an accident or malfunction. In this framework, it has become mandatory to plan an alternative transit corridor to the Bosphorus. Safe travel for our people will be ensured by preventing the risk of fatal accidents caused by the 90-degree vertical intersection of the ships transiting the city lines, which carry 500 thousand passengers a day, with Kanal Istanbul.

Agree. They too scared

What loss for the EU? Romania and Bulgaria are the only EU countries there. If the tax on the channel becomes too much they will just drive down to Greece and ship their stuff from there.
If European media Against this Strait, it defenately good for Turkey’s economy.
Your report has not mention how dangerous is the current situation by passing the Oil and chemical huge vessels to Istanbul city this will create a desister to Istanbul in case of any accident or canal blockag be realistic
Ok because dislocating thousands of people, polluting the sea with the construction of the canal, and charging turkish people with billions of dollars is good. Wake up and dont try to justify your dictators moves.
You fail to mention that having 1 canal and increasing ship traffic will be even more dangerous for Istanbul.
Also, according to captains of tankers, the new canal should suffice regarding safe passages...

When there were 2 Suez canals, wouldn't it be a welcome thing for all the shipping companies ?
And especially a few weeks ago ?
And the Bosporus is on itself a historically rich natural canal and the heart of Istanbul.
With every passing ship, there are a lot of dangers to the city and the historical objects inside it.
When there would be a second canal, the Bosporus could breathe the first time.
It is more than understandable that Istanbul needs its 2nd canal.
No you little sheep
Yearly traffic through the canal is actually slowing down. Gas and oil imports mostly travel via pipelines.
Freighter traffic has no inclination of increasing in short or long term. There is no justification and feasibility to start such a massive project especially when economy is so bad. Besides ofc making specific oligarchs/elites richer. IF they are so hard on doing this, they should start with nationalising the canal passage and surrounding areas.
that is not true the Bosphorus has around 20k ships a year capacity .in 2019 more than 40k ships passed. By 2050 the numbers will be doubled. Even though the project has so many drawbacks, feasibility is not one of them.
sanane kardeşim bizim kanaldan
I have only see tens of people in ur report ! Where is the majority of Istanbul residents ?! Did you made an public poll ? Such way you use in your report without evidence regarding salt water 💦 and other concerns confirm that Erdogan was right when he said that Europeans doesn’t like such big project .
this is sacrifice by Turkish people for future Turkish generation.... So many countries are obstructing means you are on a right path... Also imagine ship containing Ammonium Nitrate caught fire in Bosporus that like of the coast of Sri Lanka or Beirut..
Istanbul would not be spared if a ship explodes in the new canal. yes, damage would be less. but you'll still need to change your windows.
Already Turkey has a right to inspect each ship which carries dangerous explosion materials. There are also some safety precautions on this issue. Each accident can be prevented beforehand why the accident is such a science.
@@volkanerkan3910 ah yes but they know they have a corruption problem and those who need to bribe also are the ones putting others in danger. So that option goes out the window.

You know that when Western main stream media is reporting against development you are doing something good.
German media, specifically. Germany is heavily involved in international trade, and much of that trade passes through the Turkish Straits, so of course, they aren't going to appreciate new tolls. The potential military application of this project could actually be beneficial to NATO as a whole, but Germany has shown how willing it is to disregard the interests of its allies.
Why would he want to build that? Oh, money! More money, more money! The people build it, private interests( Erdogan?) will run it and make all the money.
Why all countries makes billions from their canals..and turkey not making any?
Other countries do this but it's a problem everytime turkey does anything 😂😂😂 usa literlly use a whole country as a canal😭😭

It is understandable why the Turkish government wants to implement this project. However, I would be concerned about the negative impact the canal will have on the city of Istanbul, on the localities affected and to what extent the project can be financed in the long term, including tunnel systems for cars and trains. If it turns out that Istanbul would be threatened by flooding or something like that, I think it would be better to look for another place.
Our beloved prophet said about the city, part of the city will in the sea. And part of Istanbul will become island.
So, like or not, this canal will happen
It’s wrong when you say the majority of people... Istanbul has a population of 10 million plus... few hundred people protesting doesn’t mean the majority are against it...
