  • Recorded when Karen was 20 years old, "Maybe It's You" is a song composed by John Bettis and Richard Carpenter. It was originally released on August 19, 1970 on the Carpenters' second album, "Close to You." It was subsequently released on December 23, 1971 as the B-side of the single "Hurting Each Other".
    Maybe It's You
(lyrics by John Bettis, music by Richard Carpenter)
Maybe it's you, maybe it's me
Maybe it's just the constant rhythm of the sea
Maybe it's just that I have never been the kind
Who can pass a lucky penny by
Maybe it's wise, maybe it's not
Maybe it's you who brought the caring I forgot
Isn't it nice to talk about the special way
That you smile whenever I'm around?
Rising on the shore the ocean came
Walks along the waves of velveteen
His only thought was love for me
Couldn't we stay or must you go?
Couldn't we stay and watch the splashing rocks we throw?
Only a fool would want to leave the paradise
That I find whenever you're around
    Only a fool
    Only a fool

I can't imagine how many beautiful songs we never were not able to hear over the past 40 years since she left us so early. Her and Richard would stillbe performing today. I'm so sad we missed so much.

Add my vote for the finest female vocalist of all time and for my tastes, the finest regardless of gender. It's what her voice does to my soul, resonating with me on a spiritual level.

This is one of the sweetest, most beautiful songs in The Carpenters song catalog. I think tremendously underrated, the harmonies and arrangement coupled with Karen's angelic vocals are why this song is special.❤❤

Cannot get enough of this tune, listened to this and other tunes off the Close to You album at Christmas, 1970. I just stared at the beautiful tree all the while enchanted and mesmerized by her voice. It was almost holy. This was long before they recorded their Christmas songs. Still sounds like the holidays to me. Miss you Karen so much......

I used to sing this to my children. My voice sounds like a croak compared to hers, lol!
