About this song: John Denver got a chance to visit oceanographer Jacques Cousteau onboard his ship "Calypso." The story goes is that John got on the bow of the ship and was struck by everything and wrote the song right there. He had the royalties of this song donated right to the Jacques Cousteau Foundation. The Wildlife Concert, I had the 2cd set of the concert and I listened to it everyday in high school and I still have it! Please try "Shanghai Breezes" from the concert (that was his last big hit), "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" from the concert (I posted my favorite version in the last video from the BBC show he did), and the last one I'd pick would be "Matthew." It's a hard choice to pick just a few songs but I'll add to the list more you react to them!

That voice of his. Geez. Nothing like it. So powerful. And he was in his 40's when this was recorded. One of the few performers whose voice got more powerful as he got older.

From what I understand the Calypso was saved and refurbished. She even sailed out on a voyage once more.
The song talks about how she taught them and showed them so much on her many voyages.
