Such good advice, Baiyina! I appreciate that you did not insult those who attempt Farmhouse. Your insertion of the word "personality" into the conversation is really helpful; helps the person feel that they are significant.
I'm country antique not "farmhouse" as it is now. I have my grandfathers crock bowls, my grandmother's hand crank coffee grinder, my moms hutch, and have built my kitchen/family room around those.
Over the years I have inherited a fair amount of furniture (just over 50%) and I was worrying that it didn't work because it didn't 'match' because the woods aren't the same or because the furniture isn't a set. But this summer I have really gotten into home style and I have realized that all my inherited pieces really give a nice curated vibe. Everything that has entered my home is there for a reason. So this idea of curating your home just resonates so much with me because it turns out it is what I was doing all along.
I'm from Paris, TX! 😄 Love your channel! You know in Paris, TX we have an Eiffel tower with a red cowboy hat on top. Maybe you could add a picture of our Eiffel tower, in color or maybe in black and white.
I call my style Cottage Eclectic. No word signs here. I live in Omemee, Ontario...couple hours from Toronto. I live in cottage country, the street I live on was once a road that lead to a few sporadic cottages...then was built up into a subdivision, I bought one of the subdivision houses...2000sq ft brick bungalow...so it's a city house in a subdivision in a rural area. You made me feel good when you said about curtain under the sink...I had an under the counter Lazy Susan that fell apart years ago...and a quick fix was curtains made out of painter drop cloth that I had on hand...it's been like that ever since...I just wash the curtains when need be...I tell myself it's charming.
I live in Georgia on an actual working farm, however my home decor is eclectic; people always seem so surprised when they come over :) I love conversational art and repurposing items into decor; However, I do find that I have to be careful not to let things get cluttered or its starts to look like a thrift store. I enjoy your style, you have a good eye for putting unique items together and have really helped me discern what to keep and what to let go of.
I agree with your ideas. Getting rid of farmhouse ‘quotes and words’ reminds me of the Progressive ad where the guy says “do we really need a sign to tell us how to live?” And throws out the gal’s sign that says ‘live laugh love’. So true. And I love what you said about curating not decorating!
I don't do farmhouse and I live literally in a 120 year old farmhouse. But I don't do French art deco either. Clean lines, simple trim, bright colors, curated unique art.
I love Farmhouse style. I have the churn my grandmother used, crockery from my mom, as well as antique furniture and I have at least one useful household item from EACH of my mom’s 7 sisters (9 siblings who lived to adulthood.) many things from both grandmothers, as well as quilts, embroidered linens, and some glass items. I live in southwest central Arkansas on a 6 acre hobby farm that has been in my family for over 50 years. My husband even owns his father’s only new truck he EVER owned, which is now an antique.
My parents are European and they decorated with very formal, expensive stuff. So naturally I have gravitated toward the opposite. I shop mostly at antique stores, consignment shops and Etsy (for rugs). We are about to move to Tennessee and want to live in the country. I can't say my taste is farmhouse, though I do like decorating from the earlier times when farmhouses looked like what today's farmhouse design is trying to copy. So my request of you, Baiyina, if you wouldn't mind doing more how-to's on curating your decorating style. I have already learned so much from you. Like just recently, I started buying art for the frames and then replacing it with my own art. Thank you for that tip! Older frames just have more mystery, and the newer larger pieces of art I find in Consignment shops are actually affordable, so I can use them with my own art. I love your channel. Thank you so much.
Well done. I also appreciate the smaller environmental impact of vintage. Many of the objects from Homegoods & other big chains are made in places where terrible toxins are allowed into the environment.
I have heard people make the comments that decorating channels are all about purchasing new items. I don't think that's true. If someone knows their style and has a budget they can make their home look nice by not buying everything because it's on sale. They will only choose items that fit their home, budget and their style. Nobody wants to do a zoom meeting and see the exact picture and wall sconces in someone's home that you have. I am so glad that you did not put down farm house. (it's not my aesthetic either) I am glad you gave some solutions in keeping farm house style but making it personal to an individual.
I'm in Alabama and I've never owned one of these signs - even the GEICO commercial gives that advice, "do we need a sign that says....", HAHA love your channel and ideas!!
I am not into farmhouse style, but I love that you showed and gave great tips to incorporate it into someone home. Often, videos about farmhouse is just the basic, dont put up word art, but they dont really give good alternative. I think the tip to consider your location is also really great for any style. Loved it!
Since I found your channel some months ago I have been looking forward to each week's video!!! I don't do farm house style but I still found today's video interesting and enjoyable because I love your way of presenting and I appreciate your endeavour to support people in finding their very own style. My impression is that the more I listen to your advice and ideas the more I understand the concept. Now I try to see more clearly what my own style might be and what elements of my experience I could incorporate! Thank you so much!
I grew up in a farm house, I see little mass decor that reminds me of my childhood home. I am not farm house decor fan, I use real antiques in my decor choices. I live in northern Idaho. Love your channel ❤️
I live in the midwest- Iowa specifically. I am somewhere between farm house, rustic, cabin, industrial, Scandinavian/hygge- and the African pillows you showed I can totally see fitting into my vibe. I feel like there's some similarities between all those that I am drawn to, even if I can't name it. I have several things in my home that are truly from old farm houses/barns. I also have a husband who is exceptionally talented with woodworking who has made me some really neat furniture/art to fit my hodge podge of likes. It truly wasn't until I started watching you that I started embracing my tastes. I think one of your first videos I watched you said to start decorating by noticing what you love in your space (probably not perfectly quoted), so I've been weeding out what I don't like and adding things I love as I can afford it. Unrelated, that is an adorable hat! Hats can be hard to make look natural, and that one 'fits' you perfectly.
You gave some good tips. I’m not really farmhouse, but I like rustic touches. I also liked the sofa you showed in the beginning. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
I live in Massachusetts. I use more dark colors. Different from farm house. I have actually gotten vintage things from tag sales. And I was into word art for a while 🤣. Not into that anymore. I want quality pieces and personal items. It helps that my daughter is an artist.
Great tips! Even for those of us who don't partake in the farmhouse aesthetic. Just basically how to make the most authentic to self house. Definitely curate!
Hi Baiyina. You nailed it on how to authentically pull off this style. I love how you’re successfully adding Texas elements to your home without it being over the top. As a Texan, I use outdoor plants and flowers that thrive here by season.
Hi, I live in Michigan. I've always been drawn to the farmhouse style, but I call my home decor "Formal Country". I mix in a lot of traditional pieces with my shaker inspired wood ones. I love the black and white vibe of farmhouse, but also mix in red and turquoise accents. And my collection of MacKenzie-Childs pieces adds a nice touch to my decor and definitely shows off my personality.
I do not have a farm house decorated house. My home leans toward traditional style with a modern twist. I like more of a European farm house style if I had to choose a style. By the way, I am in central Virginia.
My style leans more to vintage Southern style, botanical prints, and old rusty things for the garden. I’m incorporating a few “boho” pieces to update my decor. I live on the Texas coast so I’m on the lookout for vintage boat or coastal paintings. ( I haven’t found any vintage oil rig decor as yet- lol). The coast has it’s own equivalent of farmhouse decor-lighthouses, sailboats, starfish, buoys-everywhere!
What a wonderful video full of great advice!!! Thank u! Can’t wait to put them into practice. I have a love for the farmhouse style but have bought very little because i don’t want to buy a bunch of tacky stuff from a big box store
Although we didn't farm, I grew up in farm country in Virginia and what is called "farmhouse" nowadays is nothing like the actual houses of my friends whose parents farmed. I remember simple architecture added on to over decades, tall ceilings and tall windows, white-painted wainscoting used as paneling, handed down antiques well-cared for. Anything "rustic" was kept in storage sheds in the back yard.
I have followed your videos for a couple of years now. Your advice is always easy to implement. As a 58 year old teacher, I have to say that you are a delight to watch. You are articulate, warm and authentic. Your ability to conmunicate so well with followers of so many diverse styles is amazing. I have enjoyed every video. Best wishes to you!
I live in a farmhouse built in 1913, we live in northern Michigan, on 5 acres in the country. I would say I curate my things. I enjoy your tips about getting art that has something to do with where we live. I have some beautiful photography of Michigan scenery on the walls. I am an artist too, so I will be painting some landscapes of the local area for the walls. I have nothing with words all over it, I hate that cheesy crap. I buy all my furniture on Facebook marketplace, I have gotten great deals. I've even garbage picked a few things that I repainted and reupholstered. I love your channel, even though your style is different I get a lot of good tips from you and enjoy all the great info you share! Thanks!
I love this video! My whole decorating mood is "Comfort/Casual" packed with our personality--but we love minimalism. My husband likes traditional, we both love craftsman/mission style, he leans more toward contemporary, and I also love mid-century modern. He prefers stained wood, and I love painted wood, so we use both. We love pottery, natural stone and fibers, and I love aged and rustic metals, and he loves shiny silver. Yikes, to blending what we love! We live in Utah. This is our 7th home and the 13th place we've lived, and have only been here 5 years. We decided we'd try to only place in it personal things we love, and the harmony we're seeing from doing that is amazing. We've enlarged and framed photos of places we've traveled too, and blended in some treasured pieces of furniture we've inherited of found, or created and built pieces ourselves. I worked mostly in furniture businesses and have designed several of our pieces. Together we've designed and added architectural features to our home to eliminate the cookie-cutter vibes a new-build home can have. We have one "welcome" sign hanging in the mudroom where only my husband and I enter our home, because we've created the tradition of always welcoming ourselves home every time we return. We rely on who we are and our personalities and connections to others when they enter our home through the front door, and don't feel like a word should do it for us! I love your videos and enthusiasm and love for decorating, and the tips and suggestions you give!
I watched that same NYC apartment tour and loved the personal touches. Their place was more French country than farmhouse. To me, most of the farmhouse mass produced decor seems inauthentic because you see it everywhere: Hobby Lobby, Walmart, Dollar General, etc.and it is all made in China! I live in Texas but have lived in France. Italy, Spain and California, so I have stuff from all my travels. If I were to define my style I'd have to say eclectic, with a European beachy vibe. My kids call my condo the Zen Den. I love your style and content!
I love your take on this. Although farmhouse style isnt my favorite, a lot of online influencers make people who love seem weird or crazy, but I think you did a really good job at HONESTLY trying to help the style look a bit more elevated and authentic!
I’m not farmhouse but I get why ppl like it. I think they are trying to go for homey and family centered. Any who, great tips to shake it up from the mass produced. I would describe my style as cultural cozy chic. Furniture is transitional, modern and mid century modern. My art and decor is mostly from my travels. I like they idea of incorporating where you live if something about it resonates. Great content!
Ever since I was a kid and got into decorating I felt this way about word signs. Live laugh love used to be my ultimate cringe. Thanks for putting words to it- create the feeling without needing to display the word
I live in PA, in the heart of Amish/Mennonite country, so there's a very heavy "farmhouse" influence here. I decorate in a mix of coastal/cottage/vintage/rustic/farmhouse, but not in a kitschy way. For me it's all about the textures and finishes of items I bring in to my home, and I'm definitely not into a cluttered look. I really love the emphasis you placed on making your space personal to you, great video!
You’re point about functionality is great. I grew up in the Midwest in a lot of actual working farm houses and that was what sets them apart. They don’t really have many decorations because they generally don’t have room for them. It’s a work space where everything gets used on a regular basis.
I live in PA. I took your style quiz awhile ago and it jives with my style-rustic cottage with farmhouse and industrial touches. My work art consists of a sign by the back door that says "our happy place" which my husband and I say all the time, and a vintage hand painted menu sign from an old restaurant which ignites conversations all the time..."May I have the Sunday special?" I like the idea to live a curated life. I try to achieve that with the old things I like and new things as needed. I can appreciate a variety of decorating styles and am open to learning which is why I appreciate your channel.
I can appreciate farmhouse style, but a lot of the faux paus are what turns me off to it. You're right when yo can tell everything is literally from the same store/price point if just looks inauthentic. Great tips and suggestions about incorporating geography/place into your decor to reflect who you are.
Hello Hobby Lobby and Michaels! Very popular for farmhouse decor. But I agree much better to buy in a thrift store or antique mall if you like those kind of style because it is unique and not mass produced.
I am from Iowa. Yes we are farm. But I can't take one more sign. I do have one that says grace. And a metal one be grateful. It is hanging by photos of my granddaughters. That is it. My house is not farm house. I have a lot of my grandmothers things. My dinning table and chairs are hers from when she was young and bought the set herself. I have Chrystal and china and dishes from Denmark. The one thing I have in my home in my family room, Is a wall of gray barn board. We put it up 43 years ago and I love it. You can hang anything on it. In-fact I I do have my Mother in laws crank telephone. You know it is wood. I love it. I refinished antiques for 20 years. I love wood. I have retired. Well that is enough of me. I enjoy you. Thanks Joyce
I really liked the content of this video. My home is not farmhouse. But the pint you made about letting the location of your home influence the decor really resonates with me. I recently purchased a lakefront home in Florida . The colors of the outside were my inspiration for the color palate of the inside. This was a great video.
My home is farmhouse style with a British traditional base, some modern, eclectic support pieces and zero word signs, nothing generic/mass produced. The majority of my furnishings were acquired when I lived out in the country, specifically western PA on an actual farm. Presently living on the south shore of Long Island. Aside from two large antique cabinets, I think everything has transitioned fairly well with some industrial additions and lots of clean, negative space. Love your videos Baiyina
I don’t comment much on videos, but wanted you to know that I really appreciate the down to earth and relatable way you present your ideas and expertise. I get you and am thankful that you share these videos with us. From a fellow design lover in Indiana.
I've never been a fan of farmhouse but your suggestions would bring it to a likable place. Loved this video! I live in California in a little forest town.
I live in the Bay Area in California. I have farmhouse, country, cottage look. On my own I do most of what you talk about. The things I don’t do are things I really don’t like. It kind of thrills me that I did this all on my own. Want to say I’ve seen some of your early videos. Love what you did with your hair.
Really like your ideas and using very practical advice. I'm not farm house but how you presented the information would make sense for other decor styles. Thank you!
Welcome to Texas, Baiyina! If you haven't been to the Round Top Antiques Fair in Round Top, Texas, it is definitely worth the drive from Dallas. You will find everything you have ever been searching for..... Paris, France combined with Texas. Marburger Farm venue is one of the best for this look. I lived many years in the Dallas area, and now live in the country outside of Houston. My style is what I call Simple, Neutral, Sophisticated Texas.
These are great suggestions and examples. My style is simple, elegant, and a little rustic. A little eclectic, a little Asian. Throw in some tropical plants too for my very humid coastal state. Some of those African pillows would look great in my home!
The only farmhouse thing I have are antique canning jars. I love them and had collected different ones over the years. I display some but use them for various things. I agree, too much manufactured stuff out there! The only word sign in my house is at the back door that says “Sorry about the mess but we live here”. It definitely resonated with me!
Hi 👋 yes every style personalize who you are… I love watching your different style of videos. I actually started couple months watching your videos very interesting I love your kitchen style it’s beautiful. I also follow you on Instagram. I am from Pennsylvania ❤️
I live in southern Virginia and my property backs up to a brackish creek. I would say we are a blend of rustic (all wood trim is stained and rough hewn), transitional ( a chair and loveseat have nailhead trim), coastal , and some glam. Love your videos! Palette is light taupe, grey, cream, London tan, and white with pops of aqua.
I covet a juju hat!! I have a collected esthetic. Bright colors, pieces from family or collected over the years, antiques and new. People often ask "how do you do this"? I don't really know. I buy what I like and find a way to make it work. My husband asked in the beginning, "where are you going to put that?". He stopped as he saw our style develop. I will continue to "curate" (Your word)!
Awesome tips! I do like farmhouse/cottage decor and do have antiques in my home. I live in Michigan and agree that we need to consider where we live with regards to decorating!! 😊
What a great video and well delivered design ideas for those stuck in the sign rut! Farmhouse is NOT my style but I love collecting certain antiques. Every time we travel somewhere, I look for a local antique piece that will remind me of that place.
Informative video! I live in central California. I do not have the farmhouse style. However, I do like to add a little cottage or old world with wicker and an antique music player with my new traditional/contemporary/eclectic style.
I’m not into farmhouse style, but my friends and I are amused by walking through the big box stores and making up alternative sayings for all the corny word art. Yes, it’s junior high til you die! (BTW, I love your videos and your style. Texas looks good on you, girlfriend!)
LOVE the tip that your style should differ based on the place where you live. My style is NOT farmhouse but my particular area (in CA) has tons of oak trees and so I like to give that a nod by incorporating a lot of oak into my home. Touches of oak in my furniture, oakwood stacked by my fireplace (instead of the birch logs that are really popular right now). It's such a fun nod to where I live.
OMG, a video of yours from 7 years ago just came i to my feed, "3 Old Fashioned Things to Use" Adotable then but you have evolved and honed your craft! Thanks again for all your valuable content Baiyina.🙂🙂🙂
I enjoyed your ideas. The only thing I would not do for me is stick to decorating to match where I live. I decorate with things that just make me feel good. I absolutely agree with spending a bit more to get the real vintage or antique furniture rather than a cheap substitute. You really can tell the difference. There is much more warmth and substance to worn used solid wooden pieces.
I also meant to say that it doesn't have to be antique or vintage furniture, but I think the pieces should be quality pieces. A few quality pieces bring me a much better feeling then a lot of cheap pieces that just clutter things and really don't feel special.
I love that you said Paris, Texas because I was just saying that out loud to myself when you started talking about how to make your style go with Texas!
Not farmhouse but seem to receive 'word' decor gifts. It's not a ton but enough that I feel I need to start removing and either put out when those family members come around or just hope they don't notice. I'm definitely checking out a mudcloth pillow from Etsy for a side chair in my family room that will replace a 'cutesy' style pillow that I don't love. Keep sharing and teaching the style challenged amongst us!
Thank you for this! My style is not farmhouse, but I think it’s easy to fall in to it because most home stores sell a ton of it. I love the tip of curating versus decorating. Also, I’ve never seen a Yoruba beaded chair! Thank you for that introduction.
I live in Austin Texas. I prefer cottage style. Never liked word signs at all. They look cheap to me. Love your advice. French country/cottage is beautiful too!!!
Thank you so much for this valuable information particularly in adding farmhouse that suits our area. I live in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada which is home to Mennonite country. I do prefer modern farmhouse so I am going to have a custom cross based kitchen table made of maple which wood is native to our region. The top of the table will be smooth to make it have more of a modern feel. I must confess, I really love the whole Studio McGee style.
I have always loved farmhouse style but initially struggled a bit when I moved into my new apartment which is in a modern apartment building located in Northern Europe so I knew I couldn't do a classic countryside farmhouse here. After going through different styles on Pinterest, I finally landed on a mixture of farmhouse, scandinavian and with black hardware. Goes together with the building, the black hardware gives this more modern look, but still lots of wood and hopefully in the future curating some interesting pieces to display or use (for example some interesting kitchenware) :)
I thought this was so good, Baiyina! Spot on and so respectfully done. I've seen a number of videos on a similar subject but none as truly helpful as yours. I always find great ideas in your videos even if they don't directly apply to my style. Big fan. BIG fan. Blessings from California XXX
This was good. I love the concept of curating, not decorating.🌸
As a Texan, I just LOVE how you have embraced living here!
Such good advice, Baiyina! I appreciate that you did not insult those who attempt Farmhouse. Your insertion of the word "personality" into the conversation is really helpful; helps the person feel that they are significant.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Living in a flat in Mumbai, India, I am happy with my black and white modern industrial brick accent walled rooms.
I agree. Every style can be personalized to look more you and less like generic, mass produced.

not to mention sometimes slave labor.
Love the idea of mixing in different styles like the African cloths.
I live in Central Florida but I love a mix of parisian/British boutique hotel feel 🤔 😂 .
Oh, British boutique hotel... gotta look that one up!
Thank you for introducing me to Yoruba beaded chairs. I’m definitely putting that on my wish list.
3,000.00 for a chair...it will remain on my wish list I'm afraid.
Farmhouse is not my style but your suggestions make a lot of sense.

I too live in Idaho, but am more traditional/coastal style. I struggle, because of what she says think about where you live!
I live in the midwest- Iowa specifically. I am somewhere between farm house, rustic, cabin, industrial, Scandinavian/hygge- and the African pillows you showed I can totally see fitting into my vibe. I loved reading about everyone’s style preferences. So interesting.
YES! And to see examples of them!
Once I finally started buying things I liked instead of looking to Pinterest and my Midwest neighbors, that’s when I finally started loving my home
Hi Baiyina, thank you for the great advice. I reside in Raleigh NC, and I'm transitioning from farmhouse to glam.
Great video - I love how the basic design principals apply to all styles :)

What good ideas, Baiyina - your content is always so helpful!
Thanks!
Oh yes, this video is for me!! I live in Reading, PA! I have a farmhouse style home
Great tips. I appreciate you offering tips but not insulting those who love the Farmhouse style.
Love, love, love all the suggestions!
Great advice....Curating definitely seems more genuine.
I loved this so much! Still figuring out my style (it’s not farmhouse though) and this was so helpful.
I use a lot of farmhouse kind of stuff in my more boho decor. Thanks for your videos!!
Great tips!!! Love this video, good advice for all design styles. Liked the length too!!
My daughter has an industrial farmhouse vibe going on. It is beautiful!
The only farmhouse thing I have are antique canning jars. I love them and had collected different ones over the years. I display some but use them for various things. I agree, too much manufactured stuff out there! The only word sign in my house is at the back door that says “Sorry about the mess but we live here”. It definitely resonated with me!
Hi 👋 yes every style personalize who you are…
I love watching your different style of videos. I actually started couple months watching your videos very interesting I love your kitchen style it’s beautiful. I also follow you on Instagram.
I am from Pennsylvania ❤️
I love curating meaningful pieces & appreciate your tips. I’m not farmhouse style myself, more mid-century modern/bohemian.
Great ideas as always..thank you ...farm house decor personal like that .. Nairobi Kenya 🇰🇪
Farmhouse is not my style but your advice is so good for people who are into this style.
This video is very helpful and edited very well. On point. Thank you. Don't decorate; curate. Yes it resinates with me.
I love your videos. I always learn something new.
Will definitely steal the idea for a curated piece about me/my spoues history:) love it! Great vid
I love that you said Paris, Texas because I was just saying that out loud to myself when you started talking about how to make your style go with Texas!
I live in the Rocky Mountains and love Parisian style so I mix Paris with rustic mountain. Thanks for your videos Baiyina I love your ideas.
Omg!! So helpful!! I’ve been struggling to find that balance in my parent’s new house and get that farmhouse feel that they love here in Utah.
You share the most wonderful, practical and helpful content. This video applies to all styles, not just farmhouse. Super!
