I have orange Medaka in a ceramic fish bowl on my patio. I have lots of duckweed to shade them from the hot FLORIDA sun. My bowl holds about 8 gallons and sits on a heavy duty rolling platform so I can put them in the shade. I found some tiny tadpoles in another pot and brought them inside to a small water terarrium. I took some water from my Medaka bowl to add to my tadpoles and found two Medaka fry!!! I’m so thrilled. Time to set up another Medaka bowl. Your suggestions about a nursery for the fry and shade are very helpful. Thank you for a very informative post.
Wow I'd love to see your patio ponds❤️ I can see how exciting to see the media fry! What I learnt from looking after the little fry, when they are younger than 2 weeks old, they normaly can't eat fish food even if you grind it to powder. In Japan, people feed plant planktons (Paramecium) to medals fry, but I couldn't find anyone sells them here. I tried to catch and grow them by myself but I failed. So I decided to keep the very young baby fish in green water in a bucket (water colour should be just light yellow green that I can still see the bottom of the bucket). Green water contains nutrition like planktons or bacteria so medals fry can feed themselves. After two weeks, they start being able to eat powder food. I found it's easier to look after little fish if I separate them from adult fish, and put the fry in a relatively large container like a bucket (my one is 15L size). I made green water by putting about 5 adult medals fish for 4-5 days in a bucket water, and move them back to the pond (time depends on the weather, size of fish, size of the bucket )In that way, the bucket water turned green. I didn't look after the fry, but they all survived in the green water! Now it's getting cold here, so they are slowing down the growth but they look happy. Good luck with your lovely ricefish and tadpoles 💕

My only concern was that my planter would be too deep (it is 17 inches/43 centimeters) so I was wondering what the dimensions of your pot were, for reference. love from CA!
My pot's depth is similar to yours. Rice fish don't seem to mind the depth, they can live in a deep pot as long as they have wide enough area. But if they are close to the bottom, you can't see them.
The Japanese garden is amazing and the mini fish pond is perfect. Just wondering since the pond is in outdoor, could the rice fish survive during winter? Do you need to change water regularly?
Hi 😊 thank you for your comment & questions. Japanese rice fish can handle very cold water. I live in Gold Coast in Australia where the water never freezes even in the coldest day. So they are just fine. I don't know how the climate is like in winter in your area, but they can survive cold water under a thin layer of ice. Actually I've just uploaded a video about winter pond, you can check this video for the details 😉 ruclips.net/video/_htZakHSvU8/видео.html Regarding the water change, I used to change water once/ 2-3 weeks to keep it clean from algae in summer with this mini pond (you don't need any water change in winter), but I upgraded it to a bigger patio pond with more plants and substrate last year and I changed water only once a year! My fish are happy and they reproduced a lot! The natural ecosystem must have worked well in the bigger patio pond. Hi! Your mini pond is beautiful! I have 4 cats and I noticed you used a cover at first, but then you didn't. Do cats get used to the pond and not bother the fish after a while?
You are spot on with your guess! I have 3 cats now, but back then I had two. Those two cats got used to the pond in the end. When I got a new one, I started using the cover again because the new cat was a curious kitten 😹 I use a bamboo shade cover when it's heavily raining.
@@liryc24 I understand, the cover doesn't look good. As my pond plants grow, they give the fish more hiding areas. I think that helped to protect them too. If your pond doesn't have much hiding area, and the colour of the fish stands out, you'd better have a cover because the cover also protect fish from birds as well (depends on where you live though).
Thank you 😊 Just a note, Japanese rice fish (medaka) can handle cold water if they are adult, but small fish may not be able to make it in winter. Also when it’s cold, they spend most of the time sitting at the bottom and don’t move much. So if your pond is deep, you may not be able to see them much. A lot of people start setting this kind of pond from spring in Japan. I think spring is the easiest season 😉
Hello Friend! I'm from Brazil and I really liked your planted mini pond. It was wonderful, because you are very talented and creative. Thank youuu❣️I love creative things. My next video may not be so soon (sorry, I am a slow creator...) but I definitely want to make more videos. Wow your pond is a big pond. It sounds so exciting. Love to see it!
I moved my ricefish to a fish tank inside last winter. But Japanese ricefish are tolerant with cold water. They can survive during the winter. They usually slow down eating when the water temperature drops. When it’s very cold, they don’t eat, don’t move much to save energy. They can survive even under ice but if it’s too cold and the whole water gets frozen, they die. Also, little fish are weaker, so they may not handle well with cold water. So we don’t normally use heater for this fish. Hope this info is helpful 😊
The open shaped bowl exposes water surface to the air, so air always dissolve in the water, and rice fish don’t need the pump. Yes, plants act like a filter and help to oxygenate the water too. You can install a pump if you want, but the fish don’t like strong stream, so you need to make sure to give them the area with no stream.
@@livelovelaughdiy let the water come in under that tray. How is your beatiful space doing? I also love the white pebbles with the flagstones, very Zen. 👍
Thank you!! I tried to make this space like a Japanese zen garden. My bamboo fountain is getting dirty but the plants are growing to cover the ground and looking nice now 😊
I'm doing this! One question though; is the hot glue strong enough to hold water? I've always had it deteriorate from water or liquids. Might try it with silicone. I actually have a few different pots to choose from. Some with and some without drainage holes. Have you done this with any other fish? I want to get a few set up. Rice fish, American flatfish, guppies, platies, mollies, even try some female bettas outside in a protected area. I think it could be great, as I live in a similar climate to Gold Coast, but opposite hemisphere: San Diego, in Southern California🌈🌊🌞😂 - Erik
I don’t recommend to use hot glue. My pot had a peg to seal the hole, so I placed it and fixed with epoxy glue. It’s has been no leak. I haven’t try other fish, but my friend had some guppies in the similar pond, so I think guppies are ok (actually they breed a lot in the pond!). Female bettas sound nice 😊 Thank you for your lovely comment from California 🌞🌞🌞
@@jt.633 I bought the plant (swamp pepper) from aquatic plant section. The other one which I got from my backyard was weed. But I found it growing in the pond, so I just guessed it should be ok in the water, and it was ok 👍 actually you can try many different plants. If you don’t immerse whole pot, some types of mint grow, pothos can be ok too 😊
I cleaned the pond and changed water regularly, but the frequency depends on the season. If it’s summer, I change water more often than cold season. You seldom need to change water in winter. I received a comment from Japan on this video. She said that if I can place akadama soil in the pond, I don’t need to change water. Actually I looked for it, but couldn’t find it here. I don’t know where you live, but if you can find it, it may help to reduce your work.
I am curious how you clean your pond and how it maintains itself without a pump? I want to install a mini pond of my own but most videos I watch say a pump needs to be installed. Any help you can provide is very much appreciated!!
When I clean my mini pond, I use a gravel cleaner (vacuum tube) to clean the gravel and get rid of dirty water at the bottom (probably 1/3 of pond water) then scrape algae inside of the pond with sponge or scouring pad (my one has a long stick, so I don't have to put my hand in water. Also it is easier to wipe off the algae when water is not so deep). Wait for half hour+ (normally I clean other fish tank during the time), then use the gravel cleaner again to remove more dirty water. After that I add new clean water not more than old water. If it doesn't fill up the pond, I add the rest of the new water next day because I don't want to fill new water more than half at once. Regarding the pump, you can install it in your pond. But ricefish generally live in still water, and the swim against the stream. So if there is constant water stream in the pond, the fish have to fight against the stream constantly, and it exhausts them. But if there is a still area, they can avoid the stream. So you can use the pump. But I think its better to adjust the flow level low for them 😃
Thank you :) I used a piece of wire mesh panel to make the cover. I cut the panel in a bigger circle than the pond's diameter with wire cutter, and put it on the pond then folded the edge to fit on top of the pond. Sometimes, I used bamboo shade (cut out in a size to cover the pond) when I want to shut from sunlight, or heavy rain.
I cleaned this mini pond once/2-3 wk when it’s warm, but now it’s winter here and my fish are often sleeping at the bottom and don’t eat much so I seldom need to clean the pond 😅
This was absolutely AMAZING! Having a little fish nursery was so smart! And it looks so good!

Sangat suka... Very simple... Subscribed done
Thank you 😊 Yes, this method is very old traditional Japanese way. It’s very simple.
How do you clean the water or oxygenate the water
Do you use any sort of filter or a pump?
Or just the water plants doing the job?
The open shaped bowl exposes water surface to the air, so air always dissolve in the water, and rice fish don’t need the pump. Yes, plants act like a filter and help to oxygenate the water too. You can install a pump if you want, but the fish don’t like strong stream, so you need to make sure to give them the area with no stream.
This was so satisfying :) I am adopting rice fish this week!
That’s exciting! You are gonna love your new fish 💕
Planning to make my own mini pond! Your video is very inspiring! Thank you
Thank you 😊 You are gonna love the mini pond 🐟 It’s therapeutic.
Great video! I’m about to set up my first mini pond for rice fish and this inspired me :)
Thank you so much 😊 You will love your new pond! Rice fish are lovely💕
Beautiful and relaxing video!
Thank you very much 😊🙏
This was a really nice video, very calming! The baby fish nursery is such a clever idea too! Can't wait to give this a go myself 💕
Thank you 😊 Watching little fish swimming in a mini pond is therapeutic 💕
Thanks for such an informational video. well done!
Thank you for watching this video 😊
Nice! The bottomtray would exactually work fine as a part of bio/bogfilter. Only not with fine gravel but pebbles 😉
I see, it makes sense! Thank you 😊
@@livelovelaughdiy let the water come in under that tray. How is your beatiful space doing? I also love the white pebbles with the flagstones, very Zen. 👍
Thank you!! I tried to make this space like a Japanese zen garden. My bamboo fountain is getting dirty but the plants are growing to cover the ground and looking nice now 😊
This video is amazing!! I love this and you!
Owww, thank you so much!
Lovely pond. Love your bamboo fountain too. All the best
Thank you! You too!
いいですよねー、今自分の庭にメダカの池を作りたい。色もとても鮮やかになったしね〜
メダカ、癒されますね。本場の日本は色んな種類がいて憧れます❤️池もステキでしょうねー♪
Tq for sharing. Looking forward to your video. Now I found a 'new' friend. Love from Selangor, Malaysia ❤
Thank you 🙏 I have visited Johor Bahru Temple in Malaysia long time ago 😊
@@livelovelaughdiy That's interesting. I used to stay in Johor Bahru. Now I've moved to Selangor.
Wow, what a great idea!
Cute fishes and cats! ✨✨
Thank you 😊 my cats are so curious…
I just found inspiration and totally wanna do this too! Thank you for this video!
I am so glad you liked this! Thank you for watching this video 😊
@@livelovelaughdiy Hi! How do you know which plants can sit in the water? Like the one's in the inner terra cotta? Haha I have no idea, thank you.
@@jt.633 I bought the plant (swamp pepper) from aquatic plant section. The other one which I got from my backyard was weed. But I found it growing in the pond, so I just guessed it should be ok in the water, and it was ok 👍 actually you can try many different plants. If you don’t immerse whole pot, some types of mint grow, pothos can be ok too 😊
I'm less than one minute in, and I love this
Thank you 😊 So happy that you enjoyed this video!
Beautiful love your video so relaxing looking at it 🙏😻👍
Thank you 😻💕
Thanks!
Wow 😮 thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

love your video hope you keep us up to date on your fish
I am making the update video now. It will be there by the next weekend. Hope to see you there soon ❣️
Should we change water regularly to prevent algae from growing?
Great video 👍👍
I cleaned the pond and changed water regularly, but the frequency depends on the season. If it’s summer, I change water more often than cold season. You seldom need to change water in winter. I received a comment from Japan on this video. She said that if I can place akadama soil in the pond, I don’t need to change water. Actually I looked for it, but couldn’t find it here. I don’t know where you live, but if you can find it, it may help to reduce your work.
I love this video and I love your cats.. omg their faces so cuteee
Thank you 😊 We got a new kitten, hope I can show you my playful kitten on the next video 😆
❤ Absolutely beautiful ❤ hi from Texas USA
Thank you for your kind greeting from Texas!
@@livelovelaughdiy my pleasure, I’ll be waiting for your New Video. Hi from Texas
So beautiful. Video making thanks
Thanks to you!
But I think its better to adjust the flow level low for them 😃
Beautifully made tutorial.. wonderful project 😻🙏🏽
Thank you 💕💕💕
I love your videos, keep them coming 🙏
Thank youuuu🙏🙏🙏
Amazing!! Can't wait to make my first one!! Thank you!!

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL WTF I WANT THIS 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you! Glad you liked my mini pond 😊
It's beautiful ❤️
Thank you 😊
I love this pond so much! Could you please show how you made the cover? What material is that?I’m looking for something similar for my mini pond.
Liked your idea!!! But how often do you clean your pond?? Can you make a video on how to maintain!!
I cleaned this mini pond once/2-3 wk when it’s warm, but now it’s winter here and my fish are often sleeping at the bottom and don’t eat much so I seldom need to clean the pond 😅
