- Why is this the most HATED tool that I've ever shown? because people loved to be trolls on the internet. I created an IGTV video about a month and a half ago that accumulated almost 3 million views.... link below

The problem was I failed to do a thorough job explaining the tool and what it could be used for. Fast forward about a month and a half and I decided to create this Toolsday video showing in more depth my thoughts on this tool.
This is the XUX01 from Makita and what's great is the ability to use this year round in different applications with multiple different attachments. Is it for every snow? Heck no! A wet heavy snow is miserable regardless what you use and it's no different with this.

Even if you think I am crazy...that this is a waste of time to use a tool like this, think about the people that can't lift a shovel, like to maintain their sidewalks, maybe are elder. They can manicure their lawns in the spring, and work fairly effortlessly in the winter.

Thanks. Yes, I use a snow blower but it leaves snow on the sidewalk. It doesn't clean it completely. This would do the finishing touch of making my sidewalk totally clear.

Did commercial snowremoval for yrs. I spent lots of time with my power broom.
2-3 inches of average weight snow is the transition point where a shovel becomes more efficient.
Operational tip, the paddles move the snow better on the second pass, so make a clean up pass, slide over and pull the head backwards over the snow in your next strip. When you hit that snow it will flip out rather than get carried over to the back side.
Best use I found was stripping the foot traffic packed snow off sidewalks. Work it similarly to using a broom rather than long passes.
I can definitely see how this could be really useful for someone who uses several of the attachments to do a little bit of everything, and if they don't have a lot of area to shovel or have a physical limitation. Looking forward to any future videos of this in the spring showing some of the other attachments! Let the haters hate, they are just sad because they have to use a shovel and aren't having any fun.
I'd love to own this tool. Shoveling snow is possibly my least favorite thing to do, albeit gratifying. I think I would be even happier with a job done with this piece of equipment because upon completion I wouldn't have to contemplate a trip to the E.R. for a heart attack. Thanks for the review!
Work smarter, not harder. I love the gas brooms I have, both bristle and paddle. We get winters like Canada in ND and I can assure you we/they don't always get dumped on. Even after large snow events I'll use mine to clean up after the plow or snowblower on sidewalks. It gets it down to the concrete and I save immensely on salt. Commercial guys here use it a lot in front of business entrances.
Yeah, that’s what I was hoping to hear more about. After snow blowing, I still have this layer of slippery compacted snow left. So I still have to scrape that off with a shovel. I was wondering if the bristles would be able to clean that up? So is the right order something like: Snow blower -> Bristles (to break up ice) -> Paddle to push off the break up off?
@Frank Partida it depends on the snow and how fast you get to the hard pack. Often you will be able to get it with just the bristles and it will sweep it off as it breaks it up. However if the snow is heavy wet stuff and it's cold enough, the hard pack will freeze over before you can do much of anything with it. You have to do it in small sections (blow snow and broom right away) or have someone following you. If you blow a whole driveway and then go after to clean up, the first stuff is frozen over by the time you grab the broom.
For our region here in Germany, with about not more than 2 inch of snow a time, i think its a nice tool. So thx for sharing this video. Bought one with the wire broom last week. ☆☆☆☆
Sir, I'm 86 & can't shovel my ramp anymore. You missed 1 thing about the 2 attachments you do not have to lift them to make them work!

if you google it some ppl make a wheel attachment that can fit on the pole. Put bigger tires on it work better.

Probably a back saver for those 2-4" snows. Ive never had any back problems but after shoveling 2 or 3 properties sidewalks I can hardly stand completely straight up the next day.
Personally, I'm Canadian, and I have to deal with a freaking huge amount of snow per year, and when Makita had announced this tool, I was super excited ! Yeah it can't do the job of a snow blower but for me it's a complementary tool that you use for finish work and get a nice and clean driveway 👍🏻 just like you said

Thank you for this video! While I have bought into the Milwaukee brand of tools they make what looks like virtually identical tools for their "Quik Lok" system. I'm 72 and have back, shoulder and cardiac issues (getting old really sucks but it's better than the alternative...) and one or even both of these tools will be in my shed very soon. My wife especially is particularly fussy about even a little bit of snow and insists on shoveling even a quarter inch of snow and then complains about her sore back. So I'll hand her this tool and she can have at it. I let the snow build up until it justifies getting out the snow blower.
What a cracking tool. You're spot on when you talk about the different types of snow. With deeper drifts, you could use it to break up compacted snow then have your kids follow behind with shovels moving all the loose snow. I especially like the broom to remove the issue of ice building up after clearing the snow.
Here in Eastern Canada we regularly get 6 inches, 12 inches and deeper at times. And it can be wet stuff, not the fluffy stuff that is light to move. Last snow fall was like moving wet sand. it's Great for "sweeping" but not something I could use. Excellent demo video though.

This works even better if you hold it at a bit of an angle to the direction you push it because it will push the snow to the side, instead of building up into a pile in front of the bristles
Man just came across this video now. I’ve been watching you for awhile now. Always enjoy your stuff. Wasn’t till just now that I realized you guys are only about an hour and a half from. Didn’t know you guys are from here in Illinois as well! I too am a carpenter! Good guys like you inspire me in what I love with the trade. Keep it up brother.
I am in Canada and I do snow removal and I use this after shaveling that way I don’t have to use as much salt

Why not use a broom
because this is easier and will leave a cleaner look than just a broom.
@@JRLSprague3 Unless it's a power broom that spins to clear the snow out a regular push broom clogs up with ice and snow after about 6 feet

I really like it removes that layer that can cause a life hazard . I live in Chicago and I do a lot of work in Naperville and that would be perfect on the light snow days
When it snows more than 4 inches I will usually put my Stihl BR 800 and do the main sidewalk for the whole two blocks, usually takes 20 minutes. I have the Yard boss too and I am debating on the brush or paddle
Just discovered this tool and I'm also a person that likes to buy tools, so, being in Northern Illinois as well, I'm interested. Glad to see a review of it from a channel I actually respect and trust.
A buddy of mine has a tree stump grinding service and uses a gas powered version by Stihl to clean up the grindings/ mulch. He's found out that it works better than anything else.
I have the same basic tool setup but it is gas powered and from Craftsman. My dad has the same one I do and at 70 years old can still take care of his sidewalk, porch and back deck. We live in Central Ohio and this works great.

I have the EGO brush/broom version of this and I love it!. Yes, anything over 3-4" does tend to overrun the unit as your pushing it through initially. But back and forth motion does clean up the path. They're not light though. Battery weighs 6.5 lbs alone. Altogether with tool you're looking at 25-30 lbs.
I’ve been thinking about getting one. Does it come with a strap to help with the weight?
I think EGO just came out with a snow blower attachment for their system similar to this. Probably too new for reviews yet.
I ordered a setup today. We usually get 1-2 inches of snow and have a 3 car garage and sidewalk. I think it will work great. And since we are getting the paddle sweep, I can use it on the TREX deck also.
In Canada we do have to shovel a lot. I will get this for the Milwaukee unit
I live in Canada. I don't have a blower so I always have to use a shovel and it is tough after a snow storm. Recently I bought Ego multi headstring trimmer&edger combo. I still think brush would be helpful for Canadians too depending on how we use with other tools..
I can see this being useful for lighter snow. It would be great for sidewalks, steps, construction sites, trailers and decks where you don't want the snow to turn to ice.

Kyle, I can see that doing the final cleanup. My snowblower is set just to barely miss the concrete to keep from wearing the metal out so fast. When the weather man calls for 3-6 inches, I'll wait till it's stopped and do the job once, but on this last fall, we got 17 inches. About every 6 inches, I hit the driveway and sidewalk. The tool you just used would be great for putting the finishing touch on the surface. Thankfully, we don't get this snowfall on a regular interval. Thanks for sharing.
A major benefit of this tool and its attachments, in my opinion, is that it doesn't rely on a gas engine. Those engines require annual maintenance, can be hard to start, are often very loud, and are disproportionately bad for the environment (especially the two-strokes). And a huge bonus if this tool keeps any elderly folks from having an heart attack while shoveling snow.

I think it's awesome! We have a complete gravel driveway and when it rains it washes out the gravel when people drive through the puddles and all the gravel goes in our yard. This tool would make it much easier to shove the gravel back where it belongs.

I bet that would help you guys working construction. Clearing snow of your pile of lumber, off the roof where you're going to work. Brush for when you're cleaning up a job site etc.

For me I would probably pass on this product (at least right now), but my mother-in-law lives in a place where she is required to clean the snow off the sidewalk. And if all she had to do was push this along the sidewalk that would make her life a lot easier.
If you’re young and healthy with no aches and pains then by all means use a shovel and a broom.
I think that work for anybody that has a bad back that can't throw snow. A little extra effort in deeper snow, but if you can't pickup snow then that tool is the way to go..
I wish they weren't so expensive, they seem to work really good. The broom attachment seemed to throw snow behind itself with thicker snow, but the rubber blades did a better job of actually throwing the snow. I was thinking about getting something like this for my house because my driveway is gravel, so I set my snowblower to is highest setting, but then when I do the sidewalk up to the house the snowblower isn't touching the cement. I'd like to have this to just clear off the remainder snow really quickly and easily.
I have a north facing driveway that doesn't see any sun in the winter. I own one of these and the brush is PERFECT for scrubbing away any remaining snow/ice after shoveling.
If you were to choose paddle or brush for snow which would you choose?

Try the ECHO gas one! Would make a great clean up for a commercial guy who comes in with a plow but wants to get that little bit of snow left over so it doesn’t turn to ice!
What you have to understand is that people in the city can't use the power snow shovels because it will just blow the snow on places you don't want it to go. Onto the cars, or the property next door etc... This allows you to have more better control of where the snow is going.

Great video, I have a suggestion of a video that maybe you could do. How about fastners that you use for pole buildings. Now I know you have touched on this in the past videos, but I was thinking on a whole video on it. Fastners, hardware including lengths That should be used, types and coatings used on fastners and hardware. The reason why I suggest this topic is basicly selfishly , So your viewers that intend on building there own pole buildings could look up a video and get some info on this subject? Just a suggestion! Ego makes an actual snow attachment for their trimmers. When you got into the thicker stuff, you can hear the motor bogging down which will drain the batteries faster.
Boy, that tool sure beats shoveling. I think it would be much easier to run out and sweep the sidewalk every few hours than it would be to shovel it. As long as you keep up with the snowfall and don't let it get too deep, it looks like it will work great. Plus, it seems to leave less snow behind which will leave the sidewalk a lot safer. This would be great for restaurants and businesses with walk-in customers.
I have the still version, never used on snow, but works great for sweeping gravel out of yard in the spring when I get a little careless moving snow with the tractor and loader/blade.
Very cool tool. If I had snow I would buy it. I'm in Milwaukee line and use my string trimmer whenever I mow. So nice to not spill gas ever. Pissed they now have an attachment version coming now. Always thought it should have come that way. Now I will buy the newer version so I dont have to change attachments as often. First world problems...lol
Whenever your working with snow removal, what ever the tool be it a shovel, plow, blower, you first have to let the tool aclamate to the outside temperature. If not, that is were you get the buildup on the tool you are using.
I'm in the valley of Central California.....I would use that as a stirring device for a kegger, or maybe a unique fan to keep the coals hot in the BBQ on a warm January weekend.......*sigh* wish we had more snow....we need it. We have rain.....but not really enough. Good video my friend.

Does a good job in the light snow and a little more effort in the drift, but it gets it down to the concrete, nice and clean.

We're from the McHenry area, if your in the same area , gaurenteed you know my Uncle Steve, forman at ACC,. We just moved to Northern Vermont where I think that tool would be useless, there's an average of a 5 foot snow pack all winter. Love your videos

Hey I like that tool mate quite handy indeed, I bet it’ll get lots of use! I use a very similar tool I invested in a few stihl combi units they do absolutely all sorts, fantastic bit of kit definitely worth checking them out but with that makita being able to use indoors it would be brilliant for sweeping out void properties! I have the entire stihl km line and this has so many uses. I use the torpedo blower for powder snow but this for heavier snow. This will also pull the gravel out of the grass that you might have kicked over. So thats a tip to save your mower blades. Anyone who hates on this attachment hasn't ever used it. I was skeptical and wouldn't even try it until I was basically forced to try it and I'm glad that I was. Great system.

I like the brush because I need to clean light snow down to clean pavement. I'll probably get it, but I like the paddle as well to be able to pull shoulder gravel out of my ditch from the street plow. So potentially a multi-use tool. Which would you recommend with the primary use of getting pavement clean of snow? Does the paddle clean a driveway as well as the brush?
I see you must wear Milwaukee gloves when handling a Makita tool.
I put together a Harbor Fright tool chest with my Snap-Off sockets. So it's now worth 2x as much.

When you have to get personal, use Milwaukee. And gloves are as personal as it gets. Any closer is x-rated.
Those are great where you have somewhere to push a light snow. I work on a commuter railroad, and the laborers use those brooms (gas 2-stroke, not electric) to clean snow off the station platforms. They work great for that, because the snow falls away rather than piling up. But it's kind of a specialty tool for a specific situation.
The problem is that there are better tools available. Why would I spend money on this just to say it works? I rather spend a little more and get a more efficient tool for cleaning the yard. Thank for the video.
I have the Stihl version of this. Attached to the 131 kombi head. No charging a ridiculous battery is even better. They are handy.
Awesome video and Great tool we use 2 gas power brooms and they are the best tool in the truck for sidewalks and final clean up. We use ours on the lawn and in our shop all the time to clean up the floor. GO MAKITA

I wish they made one of these that was NOT an all in one tool. A heavier duty one designed only for Snow. The higher end push broom blowers from Ariens, etc are way too expensive. i wasn't to try it out to see how it does in the low amount of snow fall vs a shovel. Echo made a Pro Paddle and also a Brush, but they discontinued the Brush (when I saw a review of the Paddle vs the Brush, it looks like the Brush had a slight edge over the Paddle). I am interested in Gas Powered hand Held Wire Roller Brush (quality brand), so if anyone has a brand/model to recommend please post in the comments.
For a guy already invested in Makita’s 18 volt line of tools and who lives in the Northwest where a 2-6” snowfall may occur once or twice in a year, the wire attachment may become my next purchase based on your video. That thing looks like it would also effectively clean a dry driveway and sidewalk, probably not as well as a pressure washer but certainly quicker and easier. I’m curious to know if the wire attachment could also be used to de-thatch a lawn without tearing it up...maybe give that a try and show results.
I use a stihl gas leafblower. Its Great to clean tools and lomber to.
You went 3 feet and then said it does a great job? The snow accumulates in front of the broom, so the further you go, the more snow it will need to remove later. I have the bristle attachment made by Ego. It's only good for cleanup after I use my Ego 2-stage snow blower to remove the bulk of the snow first. The paddle attachment isn't good for anything snow related.
This looks like it would work well on washing the garage floor, of area rugs.
I like it! I have a plow on my atv that leaves my garage apron with an inch or 2 of scattered snow after I plow. This would clean it up.

Seen this used to clear muck and weeds from block paving. I have the Stihl petrol version snd am getting broom attachment but did not think of snow. We usually get 3 inch at most here (UK) so that would be about right. Cheers
Who cares what these internet armchair warriors think. I can certainly see a use for this tool, cutting walkways in a few inches of snow. The brush is a great idea for cleaning that trace of snow off a walkway, for example an elderly person walking on concrete with feel much better with out that trace of snow, or someone in a wheelchair or with other mobility issues.

It gets a thumbs up from me, I would not expect it to handle big drifts but it works and as you said it is a lot easier than doing it with a shovel.
I'm thinking it's time to move to a warmer climate , you could use that broom attachment to clear the sidewalks or driveway of grass or leaves.
IDK. Who would hate this? This would be great for anyone who owns a business with a store front. If you don't want to pay for simple snow removal but also don't want to be sued for a traumatic brain injury. This would be great
Bought this tool for gardening etc & it's versatility is brilliant. I live in the UK so no real need for these attachments yet, but should we get a heavy snow fall would definitely buy these attachments !

Shovels are fine for relatively smooth surfaces but fail when things get rough. At my work we have large limestone steps and a rotary brush tool is the only possible way to get all the snow off the uneven rocks.

Everytime that thing dies down your over using the motor, it probably won't last many winters. But I'll give the brush part a go after using a snow blower. Seems like a nice way to not use salt
BRUSH IS NOT GOOD FOR SNOW! I've only tried the brush not the paddles and the brush is horrible for snow. Its more trouble than its worth. Its more heavier and requires more effort than a push shovel. I've tried on 3 different snow storms Chicago typically gets. Heavy and somewhat melty, fluffy and even light snow. Its only good for brushing your walk clean after you've already shoveled which salt does a much more effortless job. Next I will try an actual cordless Snow thrower as this brush fell short in way too many ways for snow removal.

I think this is a great tool for when there enough snow to shovel but not enough to break out the snow blower. Anyone that has on this has never lifted a shovel. Lol

I'm a desert rat living here in Phoenix AZ and I found this informative. It has its area of use and other areas it would be impractical. This could, could, be good for clearing the yard marks on a football field.
Great tool for cleaning off bunks of lumber in the yard!! I've used an Echo PAS paddle broom for that before!! The haters are just jealous!! The city workers in my neck of the woods cruise the sidewalks with Ventracs and brushes leaving the sidewalks in great walkable condition.

I live in Southern California so I don’t have snow but that machine looks like you can use it when the Santa Ana winds blow sand on your driveway. I run a commercial landscaping business in Michigan this is only good a efficient next to a blower in Mabey 1-2” but idk
