Yeah, I never turn sport mode on in mine (2017 pre-facelift 270), there's no point, just makes the car sound weird, and makes rev matching harder. My one spent the first 3 years of its life near the sea, so I had to replace the exhaust last year. Had a local exhaust shop make a custom one for me, with no mid silencer and a free-flowing backbox, all in stainless steel. I asked them to make it look completely stock, and it does. It's a little bit louder, about the same volume as hot hatches used to be out of the factory, so not anti-social by any stretch. Luckily the rest of the bottom of the car aside from some of the suspension is aluminium, so won't rust. The only other mod I've done is to add sound deadening to the doors, wheel arches, and boot floor, so there's less road noise, as well as two-piece disks for the front so they're cheaper to replace (as well as significantly lighter, as the bell is aluminium). Other than that, I make sure to change the oil every 3000 miles, and get any maintainance done early. All common issues with these engines is caused by the oil change interval being too long, so it's really not worth skimping out on the £30 or so and 20-30 minutes it takes to change the oil and oil filter. You can do it without lifting the car. You can get Brembo ceramic pads for these calipers, but they're only sold in the USA, so I'm going to have to import them. That's what I'm planning to do next time I need to change the pads, that's going to be my next upgrade. Honestly, I'm probably going to keep this thing for a long time, it's high tech enough to be easy to live with, but the driving expereience feels quite old-school, I like how you need to rev the engine out for best effect, it does pretty good fuel economy (40MPG UK), and the boot is very big.
it’s flexible so when you crash into the bumper you won’t damage the exhaust, other manufacturers have nothing between the real exhaust and the fake exhaust in the bumper
If you press the button on the tip of the left lever, it switches between different options on the display when it is in sport mode. You can make it show you the speed, but sport mode only makes the pedal slightly more sensitive, and I'm not sure if this is correct, but I think it lets you go 250 if it is in sport mode as well. Other than that, the performance is the same. 😊 I'm glad to see more people reviewing this car because it's so much fun to drive, especially on the track!.😁

I'm a VWAG Guy. I testdrove one back in 2016 I think. It was almost new with 3000Km on it. I can only agree that this car is absolutely great. The engine is very strong, revs freely. Also the build quality of the car in the interior is really good. The Denon Sound System sounds really good as well. The gear throw is a bit long (for my taste) and I'm also a "DSG Guy". But also the braking on this car is really really good. Honestly, this car is an almost perfect track tool. You need to get used to the i-Cockpit, but wasn't an issue for me. I also think that the car aged pretty well. A modern Version of this car with 290hp and a Dual Clutch Transmission would be an epic car. Compared to a MK6 or MK7 GTI this car feels lighter and more nimble. The Golf feels more settled and grown up. It's comparable with the difference of a Polo GTI to a Fiesta ST. But the 308 is less "hardcore" in terms of the dampers.

But then you are already going illegally fast.

I wanted a hot hatch and while other cars are good in other ways, this is the only one that drives like how I dream a hot hatch drives. The rest are practical fast family cars, they're fine but not fun enough, even the i30N. Sport mode ruins the sound and the throttle response in exchange for a boost gauge and G-meter (tip of the right stalk button brings the speedo back). I never use it. Mainly though, the weight is so noticeable. This car is the proof that modern fast cars don't need to weigh 2.4 tonnes (BMW, Merc...). All that said, this isn't a perfect car: the gearbox is fussy with revs, 6th can be crunchy (in all 4 I've driven), the screen is slow for 2 mins on startup, it has only 1 front cupholder, no boot hooks and radar cruise is only available on slower versions which is silly. How do you compare this engine to the 1.5 Ford 200hp on the Fiesta/Puma ST ? This has more power of course but I heard you saying there is no power at low revs . I used to have a 1.5 182hp Focus and loved that engine, very happy to rev with decent power/torque low rev

It's perfect for both spirited drives and long highway cruises. The handling is precise, the acceleration is thrilling, and it still offers the comfort and practicality you expect from a Passat. @@Chris-hw4mq It certainly does not add much top-end power. But it does a lot in the mid range. I have a K&N filter kit, Airtec intercooler, gfb diverter valve and a custom tune by Edge Autosport. @bonifacijus11 oh no, there your wrong mate. This bad reputation, justified in all the other 1.6l engine, is why I could afford to buy my 308 t9 gti. Half knowledge blocks you from buying good stuff. Better check deeper next time
It's because of half knowledge like here that I got mine for cheap. The brakes are twice as expensive as normal though it should be no issue (doing 30mpg as a daily, spirited drives included, compensate well and they last quite a while)
A lot of manufacturers have stopped making 3 door cars for quite some time. Bare in mind that this 308 aren't made anymore nor do they make GTI models anymore. Is what it is but sucks a lot tho.
It's not lighter than other car of this era, It was not thde lightest, in fact the weight announced by peugeot was a lie, they were promoting a fake weight from an other version of the 308, the basic 308 with no option, not the gti, thanks the law for that changed
How you can know the power output without putting into a dyno? I'm asking since I wanna buy one, but in Mexico, this model has been sold since 2016 or 17, I don't know exactly which specs are for each year. For sure, automatic version are those with 220 hp, I guess? Anyone?
There is no automatic version of the GTi. The most powerful automatic version they have from that that year is the GT model with 205 hp. I think the last generation of the GT model did have a 225 hp engine aswell. but its nothing compared to the GTi.
He likes that car so he uses every opportunity to drive it again. I mean that says a lot about how good is this car, if someone who drove almost everything like it so much :)
If you don't want a tool track, take the GT version as station wagon. You'll still get 200-220bhp from a reliable engine with the same achievable 45mpg like with the 270 gti version. You just don't get the track capable, somewhat expensive brakes nor the limited slip diff in the front from the gti
The light weight was just a lie from peugeot, they took the weight of the most basic 308 with no option and put this weight on all the version of the 308 (you can find this info everywhere on google), In 2018 due to a change of the law (WLTP test) they were forced to communicate the weight of the actual car (with real actual finition, engine and option) and guess what, suddenly the 308 took 110kg, but in fact it was his real weight since the begining I still feel bad for the people who bought a 308gti and claiming everywhere they got a light bomb, while they just got a shittynormalweight car with a totally bad engine 😂
Though your story is true (the first part) I've weighted mine at 1320kg on a scale without me in it, with a full tank. Other hot hatches weight in with more that 150kg at least. That EMP2 platform really was a masterpiece of engineering. And btw why you think Max likes it this much 😊
Guys, 2/7 days this cars working good, 5/7 days this car is a problem car. THP engine is so bad, build with ass literaly. If you buy one 2/10 chances you got a good number. Trash car Peugeot make it for during 10 year max
Only downside is that the engine is unreliable. It uses the wet timing belt which means you need to replace that about every 60K kilometers (KM). Not sure what the other downsides are, but there are more if I'm not wrong.
Dunno what you’ve been reading mate but I’ve owned one of these (currently looking for another one) and it absolutely does not have a wet belt system, it uses a reinforced, external chain for it’s valve timing. Think you maybe getting muddled up with Peugeot’s more modern 1.2 pure tech engines. A wet belt wouldn’t last 5 minutes with the amount of power these put out!
@@dgbservices6049 My appology, I indeed twisted the models between pure tech engine and the engine from the 308 GTI. But what I do read is that the chain tensioners get's a failure which leads to a broken chain or stretched chain. Is this true? Also since you owned a 308 GTI, what are the positive and negatives of the car? I'm really interested in buying one for myself :)
@@mr.bossiegaming2530 Regarding timing chain tensioner problems, On the earlier thp engines yes, the older 175hp version found in cars like the 207 GTi and Mini Cooper from like 15 years ago. Mechanically my 308 had no problems but then I did service it properly which is obviously important no matter what you go for. The only expensive problem that occurred was when the Alcon brakes needed replacing. Admittedly they were nearly £400 per wheel! 😳
@@mr.bossiegaming2530 just don't..it looks cool on the outside, terrible on the inside, the engine is still crap, just like any other THP, besides a bunch of other problems..period
Very reliable engine. The only problem is the brakes being very expensive. Biggest issue's are the front suspension failing/brake pistons rusting/and the fuel tank failing (but only if you overfill it) For the rest this car doesnt actualy have any big issue's. There are some examples of the gearbox failing aswell. But most of them are doing fine.

It's just as well that the car is as light as it is, because I've heard rather scary reports as to how expensive Alcon discs and pads are.
2000 euros pretty much if you want to replace the disks 😁 Mine is near that time
@@lok687 Apparently there are good aftermarket alternatives available, check them out before spending 2k on discs lol
2000 euro is for discs and pads
It's not even really light, it got a normal weight, just peugeot communicating the wrong weight to make people think it's lighter
Count 900€ for Zimmermann or Tarox aftermarket discs. 2000 are for the original Peugeot
I dislike the fact that it's sooo Golf-inspired in its design (thick C-pillar especially), but it's nice enough, powerful and light!
I really like it too , such a cool car
Nice to see lets say...common people cars too. Ofcource i love those super car videos and fast tuning cars, but this was nice too. 😃👍
amazing car ! so underrated ! But RCZ-R goes waay more !
Got the RCZ R myself, with a few handling mods on it
How do you mean it goes way more? It’s faster? Isn’t the RCZ-R heavier than the 308 gti?
@@SapphireSamC mine was 278hp stock with 100 octane fuel. Erogation to 255 max speed is amazing for a 1.6 liter , goes waay better that this 308. Plus Rcz-R have a so important but not considered plus : aerodinamycs which plays a key factor ! At 130km/h the car is literally pushed down by the air downforce which flows through the car silouette ant the curved glass roof.
@@solarflare2199Ah ok, fair play. That makes sense. I’ve got the 308 Gti and it’s been heavily modified with 325bhp & 325lbft (440nm) torque with the rev limiter raised and the speed limiter deleted. It’s an incredible car around the Nurburgring. I love it!
@@solarflare2199 rcz has terrible ergo though - horrible driving position
Pretty fast for such a little engine.
Nice becoz u did top speed on autobhan driving this car as usual..
24+km/h
Love Peugeots and Frenchcars, but Peugeot abandoned the gearheads😭😭😭
The speedometer is so accurate
One of my fav cars
How do you compare this engine to the 1.5 Ford 200hp on the Fiesta/Puma ST ?
This has more power of course but I heard you saying there is no power at low revs . I used to have a 1.5 182hp Focus and loved that engine, very happy to rev with decent power/torque low rev
Can you try Passat 2.0 tsi 280 ps. Its a great car
The other day I had one keeping up with my stage 1 Focus ST on the Autobahn at 200+ and I was irritated because I didn't knew there where Passats with that amount of power.
@@nitrovent Yeah, the Passat 2.0 TSI with 280 PS is a real sleeper! It's often underestimated because of its classy and understated look, but under the hood, it's a beast. The combination of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system delivers incredible performance and traction. It's perfect for both spirited drives and long highway cruises. The handling is precise, the acceleration is thrilling, and it still offers the comfort and practicality you expect from a Passat. It’s definitely a hidden gem among performance wagons!
@@nitrovent your stage 1 is probably doing nothing, go have the car dyno tested to see the real power
@@Chris-hw4mq It certainly does not add much top-end power. But it does a lot in the mid range. I have a K&N filter kit, Airtec intercooler, gfb diverter valve and a custom tune by Edge Autosport. I specifically asked for a conservative tune because it is my daily and I drive it about 20k km per year. I'm thinking of adding a 200 cell catted downpipe but TÜV approval could be an issue with intercooler and filter mod.
@@nitrovent you should trage it in for a focus st with the 2.3 ecoboost. 280Hp stock and with an intake , intercooler and tune by revo you can get 400 hp, its the 2.3 from the mustang
So short ratios couldn’t imagine the consumption andwonder performance if it 100kmh in second and 200 kmh in 4th gear
Good performance, good handling, nice to drive despite poor pedals, agricultural gearshift, piss poor ergonomics - dumb steering wheel, reverse spinning tacho, all secondary controls on a slow touchscreen. Not one of the great Peugeot hot hatches.
That's why I refrained for 8 years before getting mine. I only had to stop bitching and then got one 😅
Just do it
@@spolo123 Had an early one for 2 years until I found a Megane RS 275 Trophy, night and day :)
you forgot poor THP engine..
@bonifacijus11 oh no, there your wrong mate. This bad reputation, justified in all the other 1.6l engine, is why I could afford to buy my 308 t9 gti. Half knowledge blocks you from buying good stuff. Better check deeper next time
I love mine
Good car
I just can’t stomach that backwards RPM meter. So weird for me.
the famous THPanne, good luck with that
In theory, the 308 GTI has a unique version of that engine. Forged pistons, totally revised. Most reliable of the thp family.
@@pokest225 most reliable, but is it realiable?
@@AndriusVlasovas according to owners, it is.
125.000km, still no issues
It's because of half knowledge like here that I got mine for cheap. The brakes are twice as expensive as normal though it should be no issue (doing 30mpg as a daily, spirited drives included, compensate well and they last quite a while)
Can you go back to your old view because the dragy is blocking up too much of the screen.
Why don't they make a three-door body? This bus is not a sporty style.
The same I30N, Megane RS, Civic Type R, RS3 Audi, etc..all are 4 doors
A lot of manufacturers have stopped making 3 door cars for quite some time.
Bare in mind that this 308 aren't made anymore nor do they make GTI models anymore.
Is what it is but sucks a lot tho.
because hatches with 3 door is useless and not sporty lol. HURACÁN is sporty with 2 doors bruh. not a fat hatch 😂
I agree. A GTI should have 2 doors and not look like a SUV.
You need the RCZ-R then. That's a true coupe, not even a three door.

How did peugeot get the gti moniker 😅
1280kg is crazy light
Tbh its more like 1435kg. Stil lightweight these days 😁
@@lok6871205 kg announced and real is 1280kg.
it's an all-aluminium body, that's why it's so light
It's not lighter than other car of this era, It was not thde lightest, in fact the weight announced by peugeot was a lie, they were promoting a fake weight from an other version of the 308, the basic 308 with no option, not the gti, thanks the law for that changed
@theRaw6 I've got the 270 version, no glass roof: 1320kg with full tank without me in it on a scale
i20n or this?
How you can know the power output without putting into a dyno? I'm asking since I wanna buy one, but in Mexico, this model has been sold since 2016 or 17, I don't know exactly which specs are for each year. For sure, automatic version are those with 220 hp, I guess? Anyone?
There is no automatic version of the GTi. The most powerful automatic version they have from that that year is the GT model with 205 hp. I think the last generation of the GT model did have a 225 hp engine aswell. but its nothing compared to the GTi.
my name is max
Last acceptable Peugeot car. A pitty.
What about some new/different cars? You‘ve reviewed the 308 Gti 3 or 4 times already 🤦🏼♂️
He likes that car so he uses every opportunity to drive it again. I mean that says a lot about how good is this car, if someone who drove almost everything like it so much :)
@@VR6Bokieh not really

@VR6Boki I wonder what Max drives then?
@@spolo123 don't know really, but when you mention it, would be interesting to find out.
doesnt second gear hit 100?
Is there a stationwagon version of this?
No. They realised that if hardly anyone bought the hatchback then nobody would have bought an SW
If you don't want a tool track, take the GT version as station wagon. You'll still get 200-220bhp from a reliable engine with the same achievable 45mpg like with the 270 gti version. You just don't get the track capable, somewhat expensive brakes nor the limited slip diff in the front from the gti
it wants to explode @3:53
Porque essas bomba não vem pro Brasil ?? Que triste 😢
The light weight was just a lie from peugeot, they took the weight of the most basic 308 with no option and put this weight on all the version of the 308 (you can find this info everywhere on google),
In 2018 due to a change of the law (WLTP test) they were forced to communicate the weight of the actual car (with real actual finition, engine and option) and guess what, suddenly the 308 took 110kg, but in fact it was his real weight since the begining
I still feel bad for the people who bought a 308gti and claiming everywhere they got a light bomb, while they just got a shittynormalweight car with a totally bad engine 😂
Though your story is true (the first part) I've weighted mine at 1320kg on a scale without me in it, with a full tank. Other hot hatches weight in with more that 150kg at least. That EMP2 platform really was a masterpiece of engineering.
And btw why you think Max likes it this much 😊
@@spolo123 you forgot driver 75kg included in curb weight regulation, so it's 1395kg..now is it very lightweight?

Im frensh ! I promesses you this car no have power
A GTI should have 2 doors....
Is this the same engine as 208 GTI ?
Yes it's the same Prince engine but more reliable in 308 GTi for some unknown reason, the 308 GTi does suffer with fuel tank issues
The steering wheel is such a deal breaker honestly. I don't understand the design choice. Reason enough to never pick up a peugeot.
It's not using the wet belt. This engine is forged by peugeot sport. Now on 125.000km, no issues so far
@@mr.bossiegaming2530 just don't..it looks cool on the outside, terrible on the inside, the engine is still crap, just like any other THP, besides a bunch of other problems..period

Wow

the engine is fine, its forged
aint the engine its the gearbox
Very reliable engine. The only problem is the brakes being very expensive. Biggest issue's are the front suspension failing/brake pistons rusting/and the fuel tank failing (but only if you overfill it) For the rest this car doesnt actualy have any big issue's. There are some examples of the gearbox failing aswell. But most of them are doing fine.
I always heard the 1.6 THP is horrible, or did they adjust the issues in newer versions?
@@Cvakaaa Pretty much any 1.6 thp (there called puretech now) from 2016+ have most of the issue's fixed.
