You've been painting acrylics for seven years and you never used gesso? How did you manage that?
The first acrylic on canvas I ever attempted was supposed to be a cartoon of a golden dog on a silver background. So I bought an A3 pre-primed canvas and 2x30ml tubes of silver paint. No matter how many coats of silver I smeared on this canvas there were white patches I just couldn't cover or get rid of. I found out afterwards that I should have gessoed the canvas myself and maybe even added a couple of coats of white paint which is what I do now. It massively minimises the bumpy texture of canvas and there's no chance of white patches under silver!
PS: Ha-ha i thought it was "guess-o" too for nearly a year when I first found out about it 🤪‼️
PPS why do you use such a thick stretcher... Is that what you call it? The under-frame. It looks great but I'd imagine those extra inches really add up if you've got a lot of canvases to store! I've heard that oil paints ideally need more expensive linen canvas, that cotton which is fine for acrylic isn't so good for oils. Is that true? I've also heard that board is better than canvas (for oil) in the long run because oil paints garden over time and the wooden board will protect them. Canvas is nice and light though and I think it looks great when you paint all round the edges and hang it with no frame... like a window into another world!
I'd love to be able to paint with oils, but I'm still at a basic stage with acrylics. I do love the versatility of acrylic. Mostly I use it on paper as an alternative to gouache, but I also paint on canvas to decorate my walls.
I really wish you all the best on your oil painting journey!
