    Great review, I'd love to have seen that, it sounds awesome. So he's talking with a Scottish accent now, Ive never heard him do that, like Ian Anderson, Gordon Ramsay and even Rod Stewarts dad Al has otherwise always spoken like an Englishman. I hope he didn't make the same Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown joke like on that live album!

    I think that Al Stewart is a gifted songwriter. It’s nice to know that he’s personable and good humored, as per your review of his concert. Like you, I prefer his music to be fleshed out with a full band, and it sounds like The Empty Pockets is something special. I never heard of the band before your video, but I will be checking it out because of your review. There are so many good songs about the passing of time, but the two that have the strongest pull on my heartstrings are Al Stewart’s “Time Passages” and Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle.”

    Another great night by the sounds of it. I'm a big Al Stewart fan but I've never seen him live.
    There are very few artists where I have all their studio albums. Al is one. I'm not keen on the production of the albums from the 1980s because the drums are too loud. My favourite of his later albums is Between The Wars which compares very well with his run of great albums from Past, Present and Future to Time Passages.

      Yes, the 'Admirality Lights' box set was overdone as most hardcore fans had the bulk of his original albums. An inexpensive option to introduce a listener to Al's early material is the imported 5-disc set 'Original Album Series' which contains 3 of Al's first 4 albums along with 'Year of the Cat' and 'Time Passages.' However, it retails locally for only about $16.00. Not bad! Good Luck, Alan. And thanks, it's great to see you respond so prolifically to your commenters!🎉

      I just saw your previous message and responded - thanks so much. I think I might be better off continuing to buy some his later albums - I also really want 24 Carrots and then eventually go for the really early more folky ones afterwards. I'm on the lookout for his used individual CD's, though they don't seem to show up too often. When I get them, I'll show them in a haul video to keep you up to date. I'm a huge Al Stewart fan and I think I've seen him live 10 times over the past 35 years. I own everything he's released, including rare fan-only releases. As for the Empty Pockets, they are unequivocally the worst back-up band Al's ever had. Total hacks who can't play the music. Listen to the new live album and you'll see what I mean. I'd rather see Al solo with a guitar or duo with pretty much anybody over that joke of a band. Their genre is "crap" pseudo rock.

      Wow...well you're clearly much more of an expert of Al Stewart than I am. I have live Al Stewart albums, including a rare bootleg from the Year Of The Cat tour. I was blown away at the Al Stewart with Empty Pockets tour. I thought it was absolutely fantastic and I'm looking forward to the new double live album. I haven't heard it yet. I'll do a review after I get it and hear it many times. But as they say, we all are effected differently by music and you've seen him so much over the decades, my personal comparison is quite different.

    • @andee7255
      @andee7255 Месяц назад

       @@TheAlanRosenbergShowHello Alan! The Stewart/Pockets live "album" is already on RUclips. Josh Solomon has pursuaded Al to incorporate the title cut from his "Modern Times" album into his concert set list and it is included here. I think Josh does a great job covering Tim Renwick's guitar solo and a flute player adds a really nice touch to "Broadway Hotel". I've seen recent live videos of Al and the Pockets where I think Al's voice is a bit stronger than on this recording. I enjoy the stories Al gives on the background of some of the songs but the set list is pretty much predictable. The only true outlier is "Joe the Georgian". I really wish he could go a bit deeper with songs like "Amsterdam", "Accident on 3rd Street", "Rocks on the Ocean", the rocker "Gina in the King's Road" amongst others. I recently picked up a copy of the "Year of the Cat" box set and really enjoy the concert discs as they were recorded during a time when I had just discovered him ("Modern Times" was my first Al album) and the setlist contained songs he doesn't play much or not at all ("Not the One", "Dark and the Rolling Sea", "Post World War II Blues"). Al didn't do a show in my area until around 2011 so it's really cool to hear a show from the mid 70's!! The real unfortunate thing for Al's fans is that his mid 2010's shows he did at the Royal Albert Hall in London were not recorded and released as a CD/DVD package. Oh my goodness! Many of the musicians that played on Al's original recordings were in his band for those concerts: Tim Renwick, Stuart Elliott and Peter White. The sound was INCREDIBLE!!! As far as the Empty Pockets are concerned I just feel the drummer is constrained creatively by his very bare drum kit. Compare that with Stuart Elliotts' and you can see why. Alas, I hope you and your family are doing fine! Till next time...-Andee ✨ 💫✨

      @@andee7255 Thanks Andee for sharing your expert assessment. I'm really excited about the upcoming live album. I saw the show (well this tour) at a small theater - was actually first row - at we just loved it. BUT it was my first time ever seeing Al. The only live albums I have by Al is the 2 lp live album (the 4th side is studio of course) and a rough vinyl bootleg from Year Of The Cat tour. I also have the acoustic Rhymes In Rooms which is good, but I prefer the full band live sound. I don't have the newer deluxe editions with the live material. So I don't have a huge live background with Al. I'm sure you're correct in that the current show wouldn't compare to Al "in his prime". Hopefully at some point I'll pick up the deluxe editions - maybe someday I'll jump on the Admiralty mega boxset. But the new release should hopefully serve a need for me and remind me of a special concert I recently saw. Thanks so much for your expertise and putting things in perspective. Best, Alan

      @andee7255 Месяц назад

      Hello Alan! As always thanks for the reply. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the new live album but I will definitely be interested in your assessment of it!! The '81 live album is in my opinion the best that he has released thus far and might be for all time. But I have to admit his Royal Albert Hall shows included such talented musicians (many more than mentioned in my original comments) and 40 years after his "prime" period that it just amazes me that such a great reunion event wasn't sorta given it's proper treatment if you will. It undoubtedly equalled or even surpassed the '81 release!! I like "Rhymes in Rooms" for it's setlist but have to admit the version of "Nostradamus" on that album is a bit too bland for me. "Josephine Baker" and the Celtic styled version of"Time Passages" are in my opinion true treasures to behold. His live album "Uncorked" features Dave Nachmanoff and he is amazing in that it's like you've got a guitarist that sounds like he's playing bass and lead guitar at the same time!! You'll have to forgive me for this one (as you are a drummer), but the first time I got to see Al it was as a trio with Nachmanoff and Marc Macisso. The only thing missing in that show was Tori Amos on piano, otherwise the show couldn't have been any better!! Macisso not only played sax and flute but did light percussion as well! The setting was very, very intimate (not a bad table in the house) and the "stage" was just about 1' off the floor!! "Uncorked", his live album recorded with Nachmanoff has a unique track listing and has a hidden story telling track at the end of Al's first trip to America (quite amusing!). If Macisso had been included on that recording I would give it a full five ⭐'s instead of four and a half!! Other than that I do like the acoustic and studio leanings of Al as well as his material with a band. His material with Laurence Juber of Wings fame is great too("League of Notions"); Juber is one very talented guitar player (who else can make an acoustic guitar sound like a rock anthem!). Anyway, I'm getting a bit windy here.! Thanks for the opportunity to comment and I hope the new live album works for you!!- Andee✨💫✨ Oops - if I may: the concert discs in the box appear to be from the same show your "bootleg" came from, Alan. In addition to the 7 live tracks on vinyl there are 8 more on the 2-disc release!! Great stuff!! - Andee✨💫✨
