Elaine you've been one of my favorite musicians since high school, Scott Joplin is one of many composers i can appreciate! this is such a beautiful arrangement, cheers from San Antonio
Hey Elaine! Thanks for doing this, Scott Joplin & your splendid harpsichord playing go together perfectly! Not sure about a trip thro' New York City in 1911, rather hazardous stepping off the sidewalk' I think.
Thank you for the delightful music of Scott Joplin! 👏The footage of New York City over 100 years ago was also wonderful! From Japanese composer Tetsuya Nishibe.🇯🇵
Thank you for this Christmas gift, my favourite Scott Joplin rag (although I still cannot play it acceptable on the guitar after years of practising). Although I rather see you play on the harpsichord than those old fragments of early 20th century films. Exactly the right bouncing rhythm and stops in my perception.
This sounds great on a harpsichord! I have always wanted to experience playing one. Coming from piano, I imagine it’d be a little weird having the inability to control the dynamic volume of the notes regardless of the force on the keys.
You're right! it's a different experience to try to get color/dynamics through articulation and phrasing as opposed to "force on the keys". I hope you get a chance to play a harpsichord !!
I find the "doo-wacka-doo" rhythms wholly inappropriate. Nowhere does Joplin indicate that the eighth notes are to be played in this manner, They are not dotted 8ths, followed by a 16th a la "Foxtrot".. Why would anyone play them as though they were? It ":cheapens" the music and reveals a misunderstanding of Joplin's vocabulary and the style in general. Is that how you play Bach? Yikes.
You can't just play music as "it's written"! There's more to it than that. And these rags were the beginnings of jazz. It's certainly appropriate to improvise. I play Joplin as freely and as faithfully as I play Bach or Scarlatti--that is, improvising where appropriate. I don't believe that playing music freely, and with imagination, cheapens it.
I like the clean sound of the harpsichord and your moderate tempo for this music. They make Joplin’s intricate rhythms really stand out.
Absolutely delightful! A joy to listen to, and watch.
Happy you enjoyed it!!
Getting serious Don Angle vibes here... very nice, thanks for uploading. :)
I'm glad you mentioned Don's name. He was a great player!
How very lovely, I really like the idea of rags on the harpsichord, thank you!
I'm glad you do! They feel and sound right to me!

I thought I had replied, but there's nothing here! So glad you like the arrangement! Cheers TO San Antonio!!

I wish we had made videos of this performance, but we didn't! It's an audio version, and that's all there is---just sound.

Are you referring to some of the rhythms being swung? We live in the modern day, people have the freedom to reinterpret music however they like.
