My family moved to the San Fernando Valley of southern California in November 1957, from southern Michigan. We rented a house next to a Hispanic family named the Machados. A young man would once to twice a week come over to their house, as a friend of the family, and play songs with his electric guitar which he had written, with a couple of friends and their backup instruments. They had their microphones set up with speakers just as though they were at the Hollywood Bowl theater. They blasted the neighborhood with their music, but nobody really cared because they were pretty good. His name was Richard Valenzuela, aka, Ritchie Valens. I was in the 8th grade at Pacoima Jr. High School as a newbie California brat. RV had gone to school at PJH just two years earlier if I recall correctly. Months later in '58 RV had cut the song La Bamba and it became an immediate smash hit. This short film was made when he came by PJH one afternoon in '58 to pay tribute to his Junior High School, free of charge. If I recall correctly, he had completely dropped out of school to concentrate on his musical career. The theatre had filled up so fast that afternoon that we pokey people could only hear the reverberating sounds as they came out of the open auditorium entry doors and onto the front entry area. Yes, those were good old fun-time days now in faded memories. And, of course, we all fell apart when he was later killed in the infamous winter airplane crash in North Dakota.

Hi every fan of Ritchie's.my is Jim in 1959 I was living in Oxnard a suburb of Oxnard name the Colonia. I was 15 years old at the time when I heard the bad news over the radio that Ritchie Valens the Big bopper and Buddy Holly had all been killed in a plane crash what a tragic day The Day the music died. Little did I know that's a day would come when I move to the San Fernando valley looking for better opportunities. When are my closest friends that I made when I moved to the valley was Johnny Reyes Ritchie Valens cousin. I ended up living with Rich's family on Penny street in pacoima California. Through Johnny Reyes I meant Bobby richest half-brother and Rosie and the whole family Little did I ever know or realize that I was actually related to Richie's father's grandmother Lugo pictures of the same family that my grandfather came from the relation came through was Maria navidad Ruiz Lugo. Johnny Reyes is Mom and Dad and two sisters Francis and Patsy they treated me as a I was a brother. I got a book on Ritchie Valens biography and then it mentioned his father's grandmother. To my surprise with a little research I'm not that we were related. Son of a gun you just never know.
I am truly fascinated by this young man. His life and Selena's are so intriguing and their passings were traumatic. Both were young , talented, beautiful souls and may they both rest well.
Hed be 79 now, just a year younger than John (Lennon). What a waste of talent. He was just 17 and 8 months into his career when he died. Had enough self esteem as a Chicano to sing this song in Spanish and not give a darn. And everybody loved it and loved him. Thanks for the great music, Richie.
You had a short life but during it you made many people happy and that is what really matters in our passage through life. May we meet in paradise. Thanks for the video.
Yes real Ricardo valenzuela looked older than his real age and the first time i saw a picture of him i was like"My god. He cannot be 17 "..he seemed to be 20 at least ,between 20 and 25 because he was sturdy and well built and had thick lips..young men of this time seemed older in general because they wore suits and ties..another era, another clothes and another haircuts.
As with Hendrix, Joplin, Stevie Ray, & Morrison, it makes you wonder how he would have evolved musically. The genius of all of them, make you want to cry over what we've missed, and what could have been.
I agree.there have been too many fabulous talented singers and musicians who have tragically died way too young........at least we have some of their recordings.
@@lemmypop1300 yeah, he would have been just as huge of a star if he'd had more time. Just in the very short time he was on the scene he had already scored a massive chart topping hit with Donna. Not many 17 year olds out there who have done what he did. Given another year there would be plenty of footage and Valens promotional material out there. The other person was implying racism, and of course there was racism in the world back then as there still is today, but the music business didn't and doesn't seem to give a shit about your color as long as you could make the labels a lot of money. They wouldn't limit exposure due to race, because that would limit their own profits. Now, they would give shitty contracts to anyone they could, but that's more of a class thing because they'd cheat anyone who they felt they could get away with. It just happens that blacks and Latinos were generally of a lower socioeconomic class and typically had poorer education, which means they could potentially be more easily taken advantage of. That doesn't mean that they'd limit exposure though, it just means that the artists would be unfairly compensated.
Who knows how much music we lost in Ritchie and Buddy in the tragic crash. They both had so much talent and Ritchie was really just hitting his stride.

I grew up to his tunes and loved them. Before I started listening to an iPod, his music got me addicted!

I am with you there. I am 39 years old and have about 200 records, still. All kinds from Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens. That
Sorry. I have a lot of 45s of them, too. Such great songs.
Still brings tears to my eyes that such a lovely young man with such a great talent died before his time
Such a talented guy, singing beautifully and playing the guitar ❤
Ritchie Valenzuela will never be forgotten. Music is something that reaches into your soul and you feel it.
February 3rd 1959...................... THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED.....REST IN PEACE Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson,"The Big Bopper". Gone but NEVER forgotten, FOREVER missed! Thank you for all the music and memories................

Eu sou completamente loucaaaaa por essa música desde criança até a eternidade kkk
I'm English and wasn't even born when Ritchie Valens was playing and I still think he was a special talent.
This young man could sing very well. He was full of happiness when he sang. Youth full enthusiasm Very talented
I just shared this story with my 8 yr. granddaughter. Teach your children their American music heritage. Thank-you Ritchie. Hi my name is Nevaeh I'm the granddaughter, And I love your song. La Bamba.
This man spoke no spanish, but recorded this song in that language. I love it, too. Plus, he was left handed. He played backwards. Just like Ringo Starr. He is left handed but plays on a right handed drum kit.
Que versión tan hermosa esto es una joya viva Ritchie Valens México estará orgulloso toda la vida con esto no renunció a sus raíces grande Valens
Sweet talented young man Life was unfair to you. RIP inside our broken Hearts for you and your Family forever 💔🎸🌌
One of the most tragic stories in all of rock and roll.
Descanse en paz. Pequeño gran maestro.
RIP Ritchie .. you left your mark on the world .. absolute rock n roll legend
Rest in peace Ritchie. And Buddy...and JD. 61 years later we still miss you.
Such a tragedy to lose these three from or music world. Even this early in their lives, they created so much for us to cherish. Who knows what could have been.
13.05.1941 - 03.02.1959 happy birthday Ritchie 😢 ... you and your songs are immortal ... R.I.P. 😪
Just finished watching the movie Bamba, and couldn't hold my tears from rolling down my cheeks like a stream.
Literally cried from the scene he is entering the plane till the end of the credits.
He left us too soon.
This guy was really something else and the KING OF ROCK'N'ROLL. 🤴🏻
BIG UP TO HIM, RITCHIE VALENS!!!❤⭐👏🏻

Bella interpretación de La Bamba. Muy bien por Richie Valens. Que en paz Descanse.
Only 17 and a ROCK N ROLL LEGEND! RIP Ritchie Valens.
I love how it starts out live thing goes right to the studio version
Through Johnny Reyes I meant Bobby richest half-brother and Rosie and the whole family
Little did I ever know or realize that I was actually related to Richie's father's grandmother Lugo pictures of the same family that my grandfather came from the relation came through was Maria navidad Ruiz Lugo.
I lived in the colonia too! I'm from Moorpark and I've lived in the valley so I know exactly where you're talking about. I miss home.
Richie was wonderful! The song he wrote for his girlfriend was great, Donna
It makes me cry 😢😢😭😭
I am truly fascinated by this young man. His life and Selena's are so intriguing and their passings were traumatic. Both were young , talented, beautiful souls and may they both rest well.
Hed be 79 now, just a year younger than John (Lennon). What a waste of talent. He was just 17 and 8 months into his career when he died. Had enough self esteem as a Chicano to sing this song in Spanish and not give a darn. And everybody loved it and loved him. Thanks for the great music, Richie.
Richie Valens was such a great talent.
This song fills me up with pride always has and always will and I’m 50 .
TM 69 been listening since I was a kid born in 83’!!!!
You had a short life but during it you made many people happy and that is what really matters in our passage through life. May we meet in paradise. Thanks for the video.
Grazie mille per la condivisione 🙏 Bellissima canzone interpretata da Ritchie Valens 👼💐 Complimenti ed un caloroso saluto 🙋 A presto 🇮🇹✔️💙🤗
I met him in SF on a local "Dance party" tv show. I was, I think 14. He was very nice to us kids, smiled a lot and didn't act at all like a star.
57 years 57 years have gone by since he has died rip

You mean 50
he looks much much older... was surprised to know he died at 17..
Ma. Patricia Vergara I know the guy in the movie actually looked 17
Heather Jackson to think that the guy in the movie was actually 25 at the time the movie was shot.
That's because he been through so much in the seventeen year's he lived
Ritchie was a chuppy kid ( not fat) the extra weight, clothing and hairstyle makes him look older than he was .
Richie how I wish I was born to see you perform ... Biggest tragedy.. you my sir the big bopper and buddy Holly the greatest ❤️
Ritchie and my Dad grew up together in Pacoima. They knew each other since kindergarten.
It just makes you appreciate what they did make more
Vito Ciccarelli Bryan Jones too
Let’s not forget Kurt Cobaine
All the the singers who were best at it always leave us early , we truly don’t deserve these legends
It's a damned shame that there is only ONE single performance by Ritchie Valens that exist on the Internet.
I wanted to see MORE.
MUCH more.
It sure is a damn shame. The others that died with him had more exposure and opportunities. Gee I wonder why 🧐
@@pricklypear6384 Cause he was only 17 and was a professional musician for less than a year. That's what you meant, right?
@@jokerzwild00 I very much agree with your points here; there's nothing to add. Cheers
Who knows how much music we lost in Ritchie and Buddy in the tragic crash. They both had so much talent and Ritchie was really just hitting his stride.
I loved Lou diamond’s portrayal!
Loved Ritchie Valens and had what few records he made and knew all his songs. I took it hard on the news of the plane accident with Buddy Holly and Big Bopper. All 3 aspiring musicians so much to offer the world. So very sad
