- Begonia Propagation | How to Root Cuttings of Begonia and Grow them Through the Winter. Finally got around to taking begonia cuttings. We started with propagation and how I root the stem cuttings of these begonias and end with showing you how to grow them indoors through the winter with the new LED light from Sansi. Begonia cutting propagation from stem cuttings can take some time but it's worth it in the end.

So glad you are homeschooling your kids :)
Priceless
Mike i have been rooting the angel wing begonias for the last 15 years. My 87 year old father received one in 1982 at the passing of his father. He loved the wings and began rooting it and sharing the plant with neighbors friends and and family. I do the same and it is a joy. That same plant has been rooted and shared hundreds of times between me and daddy. The flowers are just beautiful. Daddy says that his cup runneth over when he shares his wings. Try this plant you'll love it. Love you plant with your girls!
Thanks Lisa! Your daddy is absolutely right. The more you share, the better the plants look. Call it what you want but I believe that's true.
That's awesome! Love that!! So sweet 💕
had begonias in front flower bed, am using cuttings to share next spring at my parish church by their outdoor shrine.
will dig out this summer's root / tuber , loosely wrap in newspaper , & winter store in cardboard box all 18 ... plant next spring when weather warms.
Love your story!❤️
It’s impressive that you incorporate your children into these videos. Hopefully they too, will learn in it and appreciate the love for plants
That's my hope. They have a lot of fun getting involved in what I do around here.
Our 4 year old discovered begonias this year. She says, "They SPARKLE!" I'm so glad I found this video. We will be trying this together. 💗 Your girls are adorable!
Great video Mike....I love how you are teaching your daughters all about plants :)
I love the girls working with you
Awww your girls are so precious! If any dislikes this then they're just horrible. Pretty girls doing what Dad does, love!

You're welcome, Yanet!
Lol Mike I learn something every time I watch you
Well that's cool to hear
Two little flowers right behind you. 😊🌸🌸
Yes 😊
It's wonderful to see you teaching your kids! Great video!
Teaching a child or an adult to say thank you, is beautiful. We owe gratitude to everything if we stop to think about it. And nothing is better for us than a grateful heart.
My kids WILL have manners, haha
I love how you encourage and teach fun ways to get your daughters engaged with nature and how things grow.
The best of watching yr videos is bcse we can see the result in one.video..most of them show video of propagation without showing result..just waste time watching...your videos is worth watching..tqvm
Thanks so much! I enjoy putting the start and finish together for you.
Mike you are a plant genius! It is so beautiful you are including you girls in you horticulture interest.
Because of your video,s i now watch and have for some time ,, i was inspired to take some rose cuttings from a bush i have, thats about 6 years old, i origanally bought from the aldi store, its a rose with yellow flowers and pink teardrop spots on the petals , anyway i took the cuttings back in early august, and put them in old compost in an 8 inch pot in the greenhouse, i took 8 cuttings and used rooting powder, i watered them once and left them, today i checked them and to my suprise they have all taken and the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot, i couldnt believe it ,its the first time i have ever taken cuttings from a rose bush im really over the moon at my sucsess, thanks to you ..happy gardening..
So glad to hear of your success, Peter!
@@MikeKincaid79 Thank you , love your channel,..picked up some great tips from it,...
Yes ! I absolutely LOVE how you are involving your family.
Me too!
Well done mike great stuff.
Another great and informative video. I like how excited you get over rooting plants.
Thanks, Kenny, glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Mike, i just want to say watching your videos and seeing your energy for plants through lockdown has gotten me through my anxiety and mild depression and kept me busy- thank you!
Glad to help you through it! We'll all get through this together. Depression and anxiety can be a huge weight so don't be afraid to reach out when you need help.
WOW that yellow 💛 one is beautiful 😍❤️
Sure is. Wish I still had it but there are plenty more to find at the nursery!
Wonderful to find the kids to help, its a very good way to teach children into something good,
Yes it is! I love my little helpers!!!
What a wonderful attitude about the thumbs down … I don’t understand why these videos would get a thumbs down … we’re receiving free valuable information … thumbs up from me continuously 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks so much!
Looks like you have a couple of PROS helping you there! Great job!
They do good work!
So cute how your daughters helps out to do planting with you 👏😊
They're my little buddies and I love having them with me.
Love that you have the help of your girls! I love getting my grandkids to help with gardening. Wholesome and educational, and what a wonderful hobby or leisure activity! We don't have to tell you just how precious they are! Thank you!
Mike if you pinch back the second smaller bloom. Then the larger bloom will do even better!!! The little bloom isn’t usually double or as beautiful as the bigger bloom anyway!!! Love all of your videos!! Your two girls are so Cute!! You really remind me of one of my nephews. Your mannerisms and the way you speak!! And of course your looks!! Blessings to you and your beautiful family!!💜🙏🏻🥰
Your videos are much more enjoyable when you are teaching those two beautiful daughters and they are involved. You are easy on the eye, but those two daughters add flavoring.
Thanks, I'll try to include them more.
@@MikeKincaid79 they are old enough to actually add to the instruction . The daughter snipping the leaves off already knew the the procedure well . . And suggested removing one of two larger leaves. So you could expand your video technique to filming and narrating as your daughters perform the demonstration
Great job on getting the little ones involved...love it.
Your sweet girls are going to love gardening & propagation when they grow up💕
I sure hope so. I'm secretly indoctrinating them while they're young.
Adore your enthusiasm & great that you take time to share your love & devotion with your daughters who take part in your propagation, keep up the fantastic quality videos⭐️⭐️⭐️
You are so welcome! Thanks for being a part of the family of gardeners here on the channel, Gary!
I like your videos, Mike." Plant Propagation" is the way to grow. Thanks for sharing those great explanations! :)
Thanks for sharing. Great tips for these beauty. I love these plants’..Beautiful girls!
Yes, they are! I should do some more videos about them.
What precious little girls! So glad they are learning good propagation techniques!
Thanks! They're growing up so fast. I better cram all the info I can in now.
This is wonderful! I love that you're sharing your knowledge with your kids and keeping them involved. And those girls are cute as a button! Stole the show...add some chicks n a bunny or a puppy dog and you're in trouble Mike...beautiful family! They look just like you...peas in a pod! God bless!
Thanks for the wonderful comment, Resa!
Love it when you have the girls helping they are so cute
Thank you so much for this video! So informative and very encouraging as I sometimes wondered if I was doing something wrong when sometimes it just takes patience! Thanks again!
That's it, just patience!
Good to see the kids taking interest in nature and I love strawberry yogurt! Who doesn't? ;)
Your so cool men, my 5 year old son love the begonias i got 3 varieties and this video is my key to work it out to make more begonia. Thanks body, more power and God bless. Shout out fro Philippines
That is awesome! Glad you found the channel, Ernan!
I like your presentations. I was not trying to learn how to propagate or anything. I just like watching your show.
Thanks for watching!
mike you got me hooked on your show. I used to only watch RUclips political comments and news. somehow I accidentally got on your program. nw I keep watching them One after another. 😃
Loved it teaching your daughters.
GREAT JOB
One cool thing about Begonias is they have both male & female flowers on the same plant & they're easy to tell apart. Even my teenage grandson thought it was neat.
I just learned that this year! Fascinating.
I truly appreciate your enthusiasm 👍 I've had a Begonia for several years and ir got broken off 😢 I'm going to give your method a shot. It's December but I've got to try. I too use yogurt cups lol so you get a 👍 up from me. The children are great keep up the good work .
Alive is good. You did call them geraniums when you put them on the wood planks.
I have a neon salmon-colored begonia I'm hoping to propagate.
My grandmother used to grow begonias as house plants, I'm going to try that.
75% success with begonias is good. Last winter, as the calendar approached the spring equinox I was forced to trim 30 begonias in the greenhouse. The trimmings produces 175 propagation starts. Generally I am happy with 50% success with my begonias. I am puzzled that some rooted within weeks, some months, and others not at all. I was pleased to see success with the SANSI LED lights, I have purchased several of that model and look forward to using them for propagation, I wasn't sure about it being a good move - you have proven it will be. (maybe I should grow some gegonias and some beraniums? Just being snarky)
lol, good luck with your new lighting. They sure did the trick.
How did the lights work out for you, Steven?
"the flavor is the problem?? " haha i love your kid !!
I can't get away with anything when it comes to that girl, haha!
Instant thumbs up from me! Not cuz you asked, but because you deserve it! You are the number one source for these propogation on RUclips. I have learned so much and have been so inspired my downtown apartment has turned into one big propogation box
I have begonias going as well!
Man, that means a lot, thank you!
Good job all of you! 😄👍👍 Thanks for sharing.
I have a beautiful full orange begonia that I want to propagate. I will try this thank you. Your daughters are beautiful. I was worried they were going to cut themselves but they did fine. Thank you
Great energy and fun to watch. Loved that kids were getting excited about it too. Less excited about the segue music choice but that’s taste I suppose! Defo keep watching.
I've heard begonias can also be propagated from a single leaf stem. I haven't try to grow begonias or buy them because I thought they cannot survive through winter. I have a wild begonia type in my garden, which is self-propagating from its seeds. The flower is light pink and small, but the plant grows fast and tall, but it dies every winter.
It is nice to have your children participating in the work. They can learn the skills and stay away from computer games.
I brought my begonias inside the house in winter. So it lived. But will definitely propagate now since it’s early spring. I hope it is okay. Don’t want to wait until July. 😀
As a newer gardener I appreciate seeing someone with more experience not have 100% success and keep going! Inspired!!!
So glad to inspire, Kimberly!
So funny & cute video for garden hobbies ...we sure love most of your video and the wonderful tips that you take time to share, good luck with your continuing to dedicate to all people whose love gardening 🧑🌾 thank you 😊
Great episode Mike. Can’t wait to see how they do over the winter. I got my cuttings going like you did then put them in a window over winter that got a lot of morning to mid day sun and they did great come spring. Can’t wait to see net episode on these cuttings
I moved them indoors under fluorescents. We'll see how they do there.
Did you use bottom heat when you brought them inside under the lights?
@@MimiB15 Nope, just brought them indoors in a warm house.
I absolutely love this program. Mike you are so amazing and I got the propagation “disease” from you
Thanks a lot😂😂😂😂it’s the best
I’m doing rose cuttings and hydrangeas this time it’s been about two weeks and I’m getting new growth already
I didn’t have any rooting hormone I just stuck it down in the soil
You should definitely get some of them to root without hormone. Have fun and good luck, Teresa!
Lovely teaching the girls. So cute. they could put the flowers into a shallow bowl filled with water
Thanks, Margaret, sounds like a nice idea for the girls!
@@MikeKincaid79 I love Begonias but the tubulars are expensive. I remove them from the pots in winter so they don't rot but have nowhere to keep them and some don't survive. I have really large ones and when the flowers drop and are still pretty I float them in a small bowl. Would love to know the best way to over winter them.
Can't believe there's someone out there giving a thumbs down. hopefully just on their phone with fat fingers
Theorize to me that a thumbs down on a video is more worser than a thumbs up. I will theorize to you that a thumbs down shows participation by the audience. Thumbs down may be construed by the video 's host as an insult but it does not diminish the standing to the RUclips algorithm. I have even heard/read a similar proposal by other video makers that such RUclips algorithm considerations are made
See you and I are Mike Kincaid fans. We can tolerate more " not getting to the point " for those passing through , looking for the right video to answer their question jibber jabber about the flavor of a seedling cup is not welcoming. And thus a thumbs down is appropriate for viewers in a hurry
Well said, Bob! I don't mind the thumbs down, just thought I'd add a little humor to it in this video. I also don't take it as an insult. I learn from it. If I have a video that gets a lot of negative feedback then I try to figure out what I can do better and adjust. It's all constructive criticism to me. I don't even mind the negative comments, I just don't engage them. Occasionally I'll get a really nasty comment that is completely inappropriate and in those cases I just block the person. I take it all in stride.
Whats not to like..
@@MikeKincaid79 Here, here well done, your so very full of life, and you get so excited its really amazing, it certainly brightens up our world,.and you achieved so much, its just amazing, when i first started watching your channel i thought "blimey what is he on ,." i just wish your vidoe,s were longer because i enjoy them so much they are over to soon,..keep it coming...
Mike thanks for your educative video. May I ask why you didn't use the leaves for propagation too? Do your girls take their plants to school?
Cant believe the thumbs down. I enjoy your teaching Mike. Basic is important.
Can't please everyone but thank you for your support!
I like begonias. Hmmmm. LOL Mike I have seen nothing in any of your videos I've watched so far - that I don't like. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. All of them, from 0ver 6 years and farther back to those more recent ones 2024. OH... I cut some tops off my sweet potato vines I bought around June. I stuck them in some water a few days ago. Left them outside. I noticed I had let sun get on them - they looked a bit "stressed". I took them over to my RV - sat them by my back window that faces East - added a bit more water - raised them out of water and darned if they didn't have roots! Already! Oh my goodness. Wow! I also stuck some mint tips in water, and they are looking ok too. I will continue watching!!! Oh yeah. I have to try to find something to use to pot them in (the soil) I guess maybe half potting soil and half pearlite? Would that work. I have several small plastic pots some of my plants came in! I like Chobani too - any flavor! Can we overwinter them once we pot them? You just answered my question. :-) Wow is right! Well I need lights now too. Those three are great. Wow. I will spend this fall getting things ready for next spring. Yup. But I am going to work on keeping my sweet potato vines going - and my mint! :-)
You and your kids are awesome. Trinidad 🇹🇹
Awe, thanks!
Your daughters are so helpful and learning from dad! Are they twins? I really enjoy your videos!
They're 18 months apart but they sure do look alike!
@@MikeKincaid79 I thought they were twins too! They are pretty!
Can't wait to see more indoor stuff fig cuttings and all
Just getting started
Yea it's getting to be that season of bottom heat and LED lighting
Thanks Mike! It was interesting. 😊
To be honest I like to propagate my begonias (and geraniums) in water. They are rooting much faster (for me). I even propagate the leaves in water. 🙃🙂
And last, but not least... I love strawberry (too)! 😁😁😁 Adios! 👋
So, if i cut a bunch of leaves with their stems off the parent plant and place the stems in water, they will root? How long before they root would you say, should i keep them shaded and inside or outside? Thank You
@@DAM89 I cut off the lower leaves leaving only a few. And if they are big I cut them into half the size, it reduces the amount of energy that the leaves would take from the cutting, so it can focus on growing roots. I keep them inside in a bright place with no direct sunlight. Rooting time depends also on the type of plant - some of them roots faster (few weeks' time), some of them slower (a month or two).
You're hilarious and your kids are ADORABLE!
Awe, thanks, Constance!
Mike did you use bottom heat on your begonia cuttings??? I’m trying to propagate cuttings in a small greenhouse in my basement! I have lined the entire greenhouse with aluminum foil! And I also use grow lights. Did you want begonias at all after you put them in the container? Did you miss them at all?
Thank you so very much. You’re a wonderful teacher!!!💜
Funny, informative, and cute kids.
Are you a science/ geography teacher. I Love your video and your little helpers.
Thank you for sharing this video!❤️
No problem 😊
God bless you and your beautiful two angels ❤
Awe thanks! God bless you too.
a BIG thumbs up from sunny South Africa :)
Thanks, Boaz!
😂 I’m also using my empty yogurt containers for cuttings! Love your girls, never too young to learn about growing plants
Yep, that's my secret plan. Turn them into plant fanatics without them knowing, from an early age.
Sour cream, single serve cereal, etc. When we had a plastic pot shortage, I got creative. I used a small drill bit & cordless drill to customize. Some got lots of holes, some fewer. Big fan of reuse!
Begonias are easy to grow from cuttings. Always see to it they are kept in warm area by winter. Kidz are so lovely.
Ohhhh, I’ve never seen that color before! I’m in central Texas! Seems everything here is pink or red, small but lots of blooms on a stem! Those are beautiful!
Yeah, I love that yellow one!
Lol God bless them so pretty and smart Iam sure...great job girls,👍
You got a beautiful family, Mike. Great way to teach kids about gardening.
I got Begonia Rex today because of its beautiful silver green color which I never saw before. I am going to try your idea on this new variety.
Thanks and have fun propagating your new plant. You can also take leaf cuttings.
Thank you Mike. Very interesting. I find begonias tricky to grow and propagate as they tend to rot for me, but your video has encouraged me to persist! One mature plant rotted at the base and stems fell over yesterday. I'm not sure if it's pests or colder tempetarure here, even indoors.
Anyhow, I'm chancing taking a few cuttings from the healthy looking stems further up the plant and hopefully save some progeny from it, as it was a present from a good friend with nice yellow flowers. You're so lucky to have all that greenhouse space! I have a growing collection of rare species and scented leaf pelargoniums ("geraniums") which are very diverse and most easy to propagate, but I'm running out of space in my small greenhouse, but they're fascinating! 🌿 🌸
It wasn't luck, lol, but a lot of hard work. I started out without the hoop house and placed my plants in rows right in the middle of my lawn. Had to move them constantly and mow around them and under them. I finally decided to build this hoop house so that I had one centrally located place to keep all of my young plants. I designed it, bent the steel hoops, and constructed it by myself. It took an entire summer to finish while I had a newborn baby at my side. Anyway, it's all possible and you can do it too!
@@MikeKincaid79 Cool. That's inspiring! I am terminally ill with Amyloidosis and End-Stage Kidney Disease post-transplant, so this is my "hobby" now as I had to retire as a qualified Hilton Chef feeding the rich and famous 👨🍳 but I have a friend very good at DIY like yourself who always helps me practically when I need it, so I do believe I will reach my goals and expand a little! 🤞🌿
Beautiful daughters! Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
I like this flower
Thank you for teaching me.
Will it propagate without the rooting hormone? Would honey or cinnamon work instead?
Yes, it will work without hormone. Honey and cinnamon are good as antibacterial.
Haters will hate Mike! Great video
This video is adorable!
Look how carefully she moved the cap as to not to cut the leaf:) your babies got the green thumb too🎋
LOL, shes learning from her papa.
Great video easy to follow. Thank you
You're welcome, Michelle!
Try my favourites Strawberry or hazelnut excellent tutorial I have to do quite a bit of research to find your products here in the UK I bought 2 x 100w mars grow lamps autumn last year 2021 and used them for the first time in a cellar with no natural light at all. Over a Yorkshire winter this spring I have been giving away ivy begonias (sorry geraniums) petunias and I was able to take early cuttings from my begonias (sorry Dalias)which are coming along nicely thank you for this lesson, and the tip about the yogurt carton (I don’t thank you for the trips to the super market to make sure the wife buys the right yogurt not for the taste just for the pot lid)
Chris
Lol, glad it’s all working out for you.
I love your propagation videos!
Thanks Sherry, glad you enjoy them!
trying leaf cutting growth with "landscape" begonias ... 1st day planted for root growth ... thanks for advice ... using cardboard starter 'pots' in resealable gallon plastic bags to hold in humidity ... time will tell
Let us know how it goes.
I use 50% sand/compost as they root much quicker I found as the new roots love sand as it's easier to penetrate than compost material on its own as there is a lot of fibre to push through and it takes the cuttings a very long time to do anything. It also saves on compost.
Begonia, Mike! 😂😂 I love that you are teaching your girls how to propagate, good job! They both did great! Patience is a virtue, keep on teaching and being patient with them! Bravo!
Plants turned out beautiful too. My mom propagates them without growth hormone but it might be better with it. Hugs to you all!
They'll have to take over the nursery someday!
True! They're great workers! So cute....daddy"s girls!Xoxo
Mike, I prefer blueberry yogurt Hahahaha! You have a very adorable family and you are making memories with your daughters that will last a lifetime and beyond......it does all of our hearts good to see this! I hope more parents will do this with their children and thank you for involving them and sharing those memories with us. Ps.... could you introduce your chickens and your roosters to us on your next video!!!!! I absolutely love hearing your roosters(Johnny and Henry) crowing in your videos.

Child labor that's the way to do it mike! 😂😂 love the video!
lol
It looks as though the one that didn't make it was also the only one that had a small flower bud. I wonder if you had emoved that flower bud, perhaps that plant would have survived...more energy for rooting development, etc... Amazing.
Possibly. It was doing well for awhile and then decided to rot. I suppose the flower bud could be the cause.
Haters are gonna hate!.......Gardeners are gonna propagate!
LOL
Another Nice Informative video!! Great Job!!! But at like 14:20 or so you said you mixed up some plant fertalizer and watered them. Plant fertalizer, I believe doesn't feed the Mycorrhizae. You spent a nice chunk of change on the Pro-Mix with Mycorrhizae but didn't utilize the Mycorrhizae. In short you should have added some simple sugars to your Fertalizer like brewers corn sugar or Molasses to feed the Mycorrhizae. The whole point is to feed the Microbes in the dirt and they feed your plants. There is a book called Teaming With Microbes, I forget who wrote it but it might save you alot of money on fertalizer. Once again nice job on the video!!!!
Thanks, John, I have the book and love it. The potting soil has no nutrients at all and must be supplemented in some way or the plants would suffer. Outdoors, I mulch and let nature take its course.
I love watching your propagation video's, I have to start my garden again after moving into a house wth NO garden :( I have to plant into pots. even my poor roses. It i coming into spring here in Australia.
I'm so happy for you guys! Wish I were down there to start my summer over but it's my turn to head into fall. Enjoy your spring and summer, Lynda!

At least part shade for both. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best.
