    the big question is... can a airline pilot land a cessna 150??

    • @BearistaBear
      @BearistaBear 9 лет назад +182

      One flight instructor told me he took an airline pilot up in a 172 (or 152, I forgot) and he couldn't control it, the flight instructor had to take control. Airline pilots these days manage the aircraft, they don't really fly it, this from one airline pilot I talked to.

      Bearista Bear apart from, the fact you have to train on small aircraft, and you fly almost every approach, only (with most airlines) 1 Ils Approach a month on the aircraft.

      Bearista Bear Good point. As we all probably know here that a 777 can land itself. From what I heard, the Asiana Airlines 777 that crashed in San Francisco was being manually flown can came short of the runway.

      I took some flight lessons and messed with Microsoft Flight Simulator for a year straight and I always had a harder time with the smaller planes. I don't know if it's like that in reality but I definitely thought it should have been the other way around.

    • @BearistaBear
      @BearistaBear 9 лет назад +44

      Michael Quindlen I flew 172s and I've also done 737-200 sim time at Air Canada and United. Much harder to fly the big jets, as they are slow to respond to inputs because of the sheer weight of the aircraft. Aileron response not too slow but elevator response and rudder response are slow, requiring you to think ahead and stay ahead of the aircraft, lest you chase the airplane all over the sky. There's a strange, disconnected feel to flying the big jets, because of the slow response to inputs. You pull back on the yoke, and it takes time to see the plane begin to nose up. It leads you to over input if you're not careful to stay ahead of the aircraft. Small airplanes have great feel because you're connected directly to the control surfaces via cables and the response to inputs is almost immediate.

    I did it. I'm a private pilte with 500 hours, most of them on a Dyn Aero MCR4S. I went to a full flight sim at CAE, Gatwick, bought an hour and tried it. I landed it, alone, on my first trial withought auto pilot. With flight director. Before that I did it many times at home on FSX. Only the handling and the motion is diferent. After that I landed 5 more times without crashing. It was the best present I could have

    • @henrychan1039
      @henrychan1039 8 лет назад +10

      You have to taxi away not walk away. You will block the runway with the plane.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 6 лет назад +3

      Most modern airliners could land themselves only regulations prohibit it (for good reason). Now a person with a small amount of training and assistance from the ground could easily land an airliner. The aircraft does most of the work.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 6 лет назад

      I have not said every airport has it or every aircraft has it.
      I was saying most modern Airliners have that capability. Most modern commercial flying today is automated. Even radar systems are run by automation (not saying there are no workers) and that even applies to radio systems.
      Even our communications right now has the help of automation there is no body out there getting a cable and physically connecting the circuits.

    • @gelato3547
      @gelato3547 6 лет назад +1

      bighands69 wrong, it requires a lot of training and skill to make the airliner fly on its own, you need to know about the computers and know what to put in there for the airliner to fly on its own, and you need to know how to line up with the runway, stay directly on the glide path.

    • @gelato3547
      @gelato3547 6 лет назад +1

      +stereopolice I will tell you, as ATC, very few of us have ever flown anything more than a twin engine Seminole, or similar. Even fewer of us have ever flown an airliner, so in the highly unlikely scenario you find yourself in the pilots seat of an airliner, ATC will not be able to guide you down from memory. I do enjoy watching the Aviators, but I felt there should have been a disclaimer that ATC does not know how to fly a big jet.

      Nah it's not normal. The ATC has no real knowledge of the plane cockpit layout and workings. In case of an emergency where there's no trained airline pilot in the cockpit they have to call into the tower people that know the aircraft - usually not too hard in an airport, otherwise they just make a phonecall and get the instructions over.

    • @Csilk
      @Csilk 10 лет назад +1

      theres a few key things you probably should ask about, such as landing speed, flap setting, stall speed... most ATC probably could ballpark or find this stuff out for you in an emergency.. time permitting and assuming your planes not on fire at least... the rest of the information is what ATC would give you anyways to get you on a nice final approach.

No shit ATC wouldn't know these things you'd want them to find out for you in the emergency situation its not like you have a phone a friend while you are trying to land, your telling me no one in that control tower knows a pilot or has no ability to find technical information for you cmon guy.
      No one can even googlefu common information in an emergency yeah right.... I don't want to argue, but my personal experience was even though I had my PPP, l and was upgrading to Instrument training, Transitioned from C172 to complex to high performance retract and almost stalled my first take-off in the new airplane. Thankfully the instructor caught it quickly. This taught me that just because one can fly one type of 'plane doesn't mean that one we can fly another successfully. (Unless one is an experienced test pilot) Most of us need extensive type conversion.

    I got to fly maneuvers and an approach in a Level D CRJ sim when interviewing with Comair back in 2005. Except for the trend monitors, which the airline guy never explained to us in the 30 min classroom brief, it wasn't that hard to stay on the localizer/glideslope. I even managed to land without stuffing the gear struts through the wings!

    I have something else for you. After I got my PPL and started with my instrument training, I was assigned an Airforce Captain to do the training. We subsequently became friends. He left the military and took up a position in the airlines. He once invited me to come as observer on a 737 training flight. Sitting in the cockpit and watching a 1st Officer getting trained convinced me that there was No way that I ( PPL with instrument time ) could land that plane safely.

    I can answer this: OF COURSE! I'm a private pilot (Cessnas and Fixed wing glider). Trained on Flight Sim X with PMDG on the Boeing 737NG for a while. Then I've rented 1 hour a real simulator in Vegas (where real pilots train) and I was able to start it up from cold and dark, to take off and did some take off and landings.

  • @johnorr7386
    @johnorr7386 6 лет назад

    Well, the answer is ... YES ... provided the private pilot has sufficient knowledge of flying and the systems and procedures involved. After retiring (42 years as an avionics maintenance technician and a 30 year 1500 hour private pilot) I got to "fly" a B727-700 series simulator. I was able to successfully take off, climb, cruise, approach and land (under supervision by a qualified flight instructor). I would have loved to have been an airline pilot but I was extremely fortunate to have had such a long and rewarding career in avionics. .

    ATC knows the instrument panel on every airliner? Really? Fantasyland. I have friends who are controllers, and most have no cockpit experience, let alone knowing the location of controls from memory. Of course, ATC might be able to find an rated pilot, but not 20 miles out. There would have been a long period of circling, which the pilot would have had to figure out how to do on his own.

      +F Huber What is true though, is that flight simulator makes it MUCH easier for a private pilot to fly OTHER planes. Once you have had formal training in landing, taking off and navigating, the transition to other aircraft is much more doable. even in an emergency.

      +F Huber I was surprised at how valuable sim time was when I started learning. My first landing was in a 182 with a slight crosswind and minimal input from my instructor. There are a few things that don't quite translate from sim to real life, but pretty much all of the basic concepts do. In an emergency someone who has a lot of sim time would be better than someone who had no experience.

    Truth is, anyone can land a modern airliner, just keep the autopilot engaged, follow instructions to configure the aircraft and let Auto Land do the rest. Auto land will keep you on the center-line and you don't even have to worry about braking as most airliners will also have auto-brakes.
    As for MS flight Sim, I always recommend students use it to practice their IFR work.

    • @CaptainArt777
      @CaptainArt777 10 лет назад +1

      Tuffenough4u Can we agree that there are good drivers and bad. There are those that are fair to good in a airplane. To fly an airliner on Microsoft is far different than doing it in real life. A long time excellent private pilot will have a shot at it in a real airliner, but most will not. I am a long time pilot and have seen these type of video's before and it just don't make sense to me. I have never, ever, heard of any non pilot or private pilot bringing in an airliner in an emergency. They have in a GA plane. Which is far different than an airliner. If you are a non pilot, get a ride in a GA plane and asked the instructor if you can land it by yourself. Get a feel for it and that will open your eyes. Good Luck and have a nice day.

    • @Tuffenough4u
      @Tuffenough4u 10 лет назад

      CaptainArt777 Yes I am sure there is an undeniable huge difference and after actually looking into it a little more I had a hard time finding any evidence to support the claims I had heard about. Appreciate the input.

    • @RealCadde
      @RealCadde 10 лет назад

      CaptainArt777 I just want to point out that just about anyone can land an airplane given the right circumstances. I am not disagreeing with your caution here though, merely saying that with enough will to live anyone will sharpen their senses enough to pay attention to instructions from ground control to do exactly what is needed.
      That said, you need a helluva lot of common sense too and at least a basic understanding of flight dynamics.
      Either way, it's better to have a completely uninitiated person at the stick than no person at all, for obvious reasons.

    Technically you can be a "private pilot" and own and fly your own 747, so yes, a private pilot CAN can land an airliner. Realistically speaking, I think most experienced private pilots (3000hrs+) wouldn't have trouble landing one anyway.

    • @likeawhispr

    • @likeawhispr
      @likeawhispr 9 лет назад

      You assumed correctly. We're on the same page.
      Here's the trick, trying to sell the insurance company on insuring your 747 with nothing but a private, multi/instrument, and type rating in hand. That's were a rich pilot is likely to get stopped dead cold.
      When it comes to landing, I think piston twins are the worse to have to manage, especially if the altitude is a bit on the high side. Aside from some very narrow commercial uses, the reason to buy a piston twin in my opinion is almost nil when considering direct/indirect costs. Take it easy!

      joe carr any aircraft may crash if flown incorrectly. Aircraft are sensitive devices anything going wrong can crash the plane. That's why it's important to know how everything in the aircraft you are flying works, not necessarily how to land it. Most commercial airline aircraft can actually do 90% of the landing for you. You just have to know what you're doing and how to do it. If not the autopilot might just take you into the TACAN station lol

    The software used for flight dynamics in multi-million dollar sims is, in essence, the same software used in any really good PC sim. Big difference is in a full motion, full visual sim it’s easy to forget you’re still on the ground. And there’s usually a flight instructor putting you thru the paces. PC sims are great fun and can be a good inducement to get to your local flying field and see what it’s all about. In other words PC sims can be a good intro to the basics of real flight.

    Honestly, airliners are so heavily automated nowadays that any regular passenger with the ability to follow directions and has some technical ability can easily land a plane. It's already been proven.

    • @s_h136
      @s_h136 9 лет назад +10

      Cody Miller
      It's already been proven? Haha, bullshit. Even if it's possible to do an autoland, the aircraft still needs somebody on the controlls who says the autopilot-systems, what it has to do. Bring the aircraft from cruise down, stable on the ILS, manage speeds, headings, altitude an vertical speeds (and during approach there are many inputs in a short periode of time) and configure the aircraft for landing. Somebody, who hasn't any flying background or system knowledge, will fail. And even if all that would be no problem: What happens when the ILS beam, which is required for an autoland, fails during approach? Autopilot would disconnect itself and you're fucked.
      I don't know where people like you, which haven't any idea of aviation, always get their shitty theses. Don't read to much tabloids, if you have it from there...

    • @EOtekk

      the2jaywhite I find it difficult to be criticized by someone who can't even properly spell insults.
      If you read my comment again, I said "The ability to follow directions", meaning that there would be an experienced pilot providing instruction over the radio. A passenger can easily land a plane if they push the right buttons, per say. And don't take that so literally. I can already see where you're going with that.

    • @s_h136
      @s_h136 9 лет назад +1

      Cody Miller
      Don't worry, I can.
      No, that's just wrong. Even if an experienced pilot gives clear instructions: Somebody who hasn't any flying or system background will have big problems to manage it. During approach you have to do many things quick and on the same time. A normal passenger would be overburdened. That's not just "follow directions" and pushing 2 or 3 buttons. Also it is not guaranteed, that you could do a landing by autopilot:
      1) you need an airport with ILS CATII/III and not every airport has it.
      2) as I say: If ILS beam fails for some reason (and that's not that unlikely) autopilot will disconnect itself and you're fucked.
      3) in case of strong crosswinds, autopilot would fail and you're also fucked.
      It has a reason, that pilots usually land by hand.
      I don't take that literally. But I cannot stand it when people who haven't any idea of a certain topic come up with such allegations.

    This is correct. What they are saying is that after "max demonstrated crosswind" you become a test pilot. In reality, there really is a max limit for all aircraft where no amount of control will get one down safely.

    I think they can actually land themselves.

      CPRailRTC A 737 can do it.

      canturgan Partially correct. As CPRailRTC stated, there are some requirements. The runway needs to be equipped with an ILS that complies with at least the CAT III-standard. Also, the aircraft must be equipped with the autoland-feature and qualified for that approach-manoeuvre, and eventually, the pilot has to set up the autopilot (constraints) and radio correctly. There is no one-click autoland-button that does everything automatically.

    As I said, I'm only a hobbyist myself. But I have observed that when you move from one kind of flying to another, your chances for success are much improved.
    Consider RC Models. I've trained a few PPL and ATP in the "transition" of flying from a first person perspective to a third person perspective. It's quite a shift and they have to unlearn a few things, but flying experience makes it a lot easier.
    I don't think you give the basic understanding of flight itself enough credit.
