The DC-3 is probably the most important aircraft of all time. Calling it venerable is a gross understatement. A true legend she is.

I believe it was in the 1980's I saw an episode of NOVA on PBS titled "The plane that changed the world". Although I knew the DC3 existed prior to see that episode, it was my real introduction to the DC3, the story behind it, and the amazing history that it continues to make. It really is "The plane that changed the world".

I maintained a DC-3 in Alaska for 13 years, the airframe was more reliable than any of our more modern turbine engine machines, the radial engines were a different story. The Turbine conversion uses the -67 PT6 turbine, which is the highest horsepower version of that particular engine. They really need to go with something like the P&W 100 series engines, which start at 1500HP and are a newer design, that have better specific fuel consumption numbers, and the exhaust straight out the back. They also should design and install a WW2 style bomber hatch type door behind the pilots seat on the aircraft's belly, because once the aircraft is loaded with freight, the pilots don't have reasonable access to the cockpit.

I love the fact that Basler is replacing the original Pratt & Whitney R1830 radials with a Pratt & Whitney turbo prop. Keeping it all in the family to say the least. the DC-3 will continue indefinitely because of companies like Basler, but also because of the aircrafts tremendous strength. No DC-3 was ever lost due to structural failure, that and being a non-pressurized airframe has contributed to it remarkable long life.

Amongst many other aircraft, my Dad flew a lot of DC3's. I wish he could be around today to see this, he would have loved it. I wonder when demand will become so high for this amazing iconic aircraft will become so high that the Basler company start building brand new airframes. Wouldn't that be fantastic? Kudos to Basler for this project!

Back in 1969, I had the pleasure of riding in a DC-3 operated by Eastern Airlines. I was new to air travel, only having been on a Boeing 707, up till then. A group of us had missed a connecting flight from Atlanta to Charlotte and Eastern broke out the DC-3 to get us there. It was a little unnerving at first, when it cocked at an angle for run-up before kicking straight and heading down the runway. I enjoyed it thoroughly and if I had known the history of the DC-3 and what it meant to be a passenger on one, I would have enjoyed it even more. Kudos to Basler for giving these aircraft new life, of which they have earned.

The DC-3 brings back great memories. My growing up years (1950's) was around an airport. These great planes were a common sight then and it is uplifting to see these planes being brought back with the original design intact. Bravo!

I would work there is a second..... if I wasn't 61 and too damn old! But talk about one tuff bird: The C-47 version is the only non-combatant aircraft in history to be awarded an official "Kill". In the Pacific during WWII a C-47 was repeatedly strafed by a Zero. And when the Zero ran out of ammo, it rammed the C-47. The Zero crashed but the C-47 continued on with severe damage and landed safely. She is one tuff bird for sure!!!!!!! Glad to see someone is breathing new life into her. Hell, she'll probably live another 80 years.

What a fitting tribute to a marvelous, iconic aircraft. The Japanese were retro-fitting Dart turboprops to DC-3s in the 1960s but this did not involve the comprehensive rebuilding from the last nut and bolt upwards, that Brasler Aviation lavishes upon them.
It's exactly the kind of aeroplane I'd like to charter and do a leisurely world tour with a select group of friends!

I would love to see more companies come on board like Basler, The Red Bull Flying Bull's Team (who also complete full blown, nut and bolt restorations to their aircraft making them far better than they were new in the 30's/40's/50's, the film director Peter Jackson's restoration shop in New Zealand that restores and builds brand new WWI era vintage airplanes from the early years of aviation back in the 1910's and 20's era, and a few other companies around the world that take these wonderful (and historically important) airplanes and disassemble and rebuild them back into these wonderfully restored airplanes that the future generations of aspiring aviators will be able to view these aircraft in flight as they were meant to be seen, heard, and smelled. It's cool that Basler installs far better engines with 5 bladed propellers. HOT ROD DC-3's! COOL. I would love to sit in the right seat on a flight in one of these incredible Basler birds. Excellent work Basler. And THANK YOU from the aviation enthusiasts around the world for saving these incredible aircraft from demise. You deserve an aviation award for doing these restorations.

What isn't mentioned or lauded enough is why the resurrecting of this grande dame. The airframe is the apex of aviation construction. It is entirely rebuildable and re-certifiable. Simplistic yet built like the proverbial bridge. Capable of being re-engined to the more powerful turboprop without a major overhaul in design and complete recertification.
Some call the 747 the queen of the skies. While a graceful bird, she has a long way to go to compete with the DC 3.

    • @tracer740
      @tracer740 7 лет назад +2

Ryan James- I instantly agreed with your comment and it gave me pause to account all the reasons for doing so. The most reinforcing support to substantiate was ... that this aircraft presented itself as such a great departure and improvement from any precedent aircraft designs, as a stable, purposeful and enduring one. Considering the wonderful 747, aside from its size, had so many technology precedent 'breakthroughs' upon which its design became inevitable.

The C-47 version was an upgraded DC 3, essentially all Douglas did was upgraded the floor to 4 times the strength of the civilian aircraft then added a second door forward of the civilian aircraft so the army could load a keep M-38 fully equipped with everything needed to offload right into combat plus carry up to 28 troops. C-47's loaded like this for D-Day in addition to a heavy load towed gliders loaded with a jeep and another 12 or more combat loaded troops. A phenomenal aircraft and yes while they were heavily overloaded they had long grass runways in England to take off from and were still able to climb up to altitude of from 8,000 to 12,000 feet.

The same sentiment is displayed on the lavatory door of our C-47B named Betsy's Biscuit Bomber "The only replacement for a C-47 is another C-47". This aircraft built in 1943 has always been a military transport that served throughout WWII in North Africa and Europe culminating in it participation in the Berlin Airlift. She was sold to the Israeli's air force and had the saying in Hebrew on the door. She was bought back form Israel and restored. She makes her home at the Estrella Warbirds museum here in Paso Robles California. Her latest great flight was when she flew to England to take part in Dax, the flight to over Normandy for the 75th anniversary and returned home safely.

Back in 1950's BEA re-engined their DC3's with RR Dart turboprops, and later replaced them with HS748's Perhaps the lack of a war to deliver extreme volume production means that the DC3 has kept to the forefront against its successors the F27, and HS 748 being the volume production models.

I saw one of these Baslers do a low pass down the runway of Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto a few years ago. Impressive bird. The DC-3 is almost unique in that it has no real fatigue limit, so the airframe can essentially last forever in the absence of corrosion. This is thanks to its phenomenally strong yet light construction, and because it is unpressurised. I note that Baslers are being flown in Antarctica, even from the South Pole, for ice and climate monitoring.
I believe the only jet with the potential of similarly long life is the DC-8, and it is noteworthy that NASA has a beautiful re-engined long-range Model 72 in service as a research aircraft flying out of Armstrong FRC in Palmdale, CA. This DC-8 has been used to obtain some of the most dramatic Antarctic ice shelf pictures.

Douglas actually produced a DC-3 with major improvements in the 1950s - the Super DC-3. It was not a big success as it fell awkwardly between two sales slots - dirt-cheap ex-WWII models, & completely new design aircraft from Martin & Convair. Economics: it costs as much to manufacture an old design as a newer, better one.

This is like the Singer Porsche of DC3s. Funny thing the first picture I took as of a DC3 landing at the airport in Bali when I was a kid.

Good old DC-3 or C-47s flew this good old bird in the the 90s nice to fly it. Today there is still ONE flyable here in Manila Philippines.

Not to be negative, but the airplane was given a complete overhaul where the frame came out with zero hours a "new" airplane, however the control wheels weren't replaced with more modern ones,

+Jerry Reed Take care, I hear that if you go slightly G-neg in a B-52, chicken bones pop up from Vietnam. Not sure what to expect here, perhaps an ancient brown paper bag with instructions in 3 languages (Egyptian, Phonetician and Carthagian) that in modern parlance (copywrite google) mean "In here slob!" Maybe the dust bunnies are heritage listed...

Lovely aircraft. Amazing to see the rejuvenation of a classic. I love everything about the work and craftsmanship in the rebuild, except for the turbo prop cowlings which doesn't fit this aircraft. In my opinion the cowlings should have been copied from the original design. Then it would have been perfect. I believe that would be doable. Thanks for sharing.

The cowlings may be aesthetically out of touch but are more efficient. If these aircraft cannot retain a reason for being, they will cease to exist. The new cowlings and rear fairings follow much more closely an aerofoil section. The old round cowlings and the broad engine they enclosed were a rather blunt-force trauma upon any air they struck. The shorter upper and lower rounded fairings rearward streamlined the original round shape. The new longer flat fairings and cowlings are cleaner into the air and likely add some lift. Yes it is a cissy sound compared to 18 angry cylinders having at it. It is probably a lot more peaceful inside and less fatiguing on occupants with the turboprops.

Buffalo Air flies on of their Basler DC-3. It’s expensive but don’t have to worry about fuel shortages

The Wright Brothers did what? Sorry, the inventor of heavier than air flight was Sir George Cayley who did airfoil lift measurements and was flying gliders some 50 years before the Wright Brothers. You'll be telling me the first non stop transatlantic crossing was done by Lindbergh next...:)

Read an account of a gooney bird (dc-47) flying over the hump (Himalayas) that came thru a cloud and struck a mtn top shearing off 9 feet of wing. The pilot was able to still fly the plane but was pulling hard on one side to compensate for the loss of lift on the one wing. Some one thought to wire a large spanner wrench to the yoke and he was able to fly like there was no loss of wing! I'd like to see someone do the same with pby catalina's! Laminar flow wings and turboprop's with composite blades that actuate to multiply thrust! Also turn inside to a motorhome like cabin.

Definitely...!!! This is the resurrection of the Douglas DC-3...! What a wonderful ! - A very funny joke: a native whom everyone called Douglas. He had to go to Army and it was the first time he could fly in a plane ...! It had to be into a Douglas DC-3. The Commandant advised, that all soldiers had to care their head when coming into that kind of airplane, because the door was very small. Douglas didn't listen very well and at come into the plane, he hits his head against threshold of the small door. Then, he saw on the threshold that it had a written: DOUGLAS DC-3 ... Then, he said: Oh, it are three...! I still two more!!! Tuk!!! Tuk !!! --- Jejejeje Jejejeje...! - Greetings
