    Vita and PSP are criminally underrated in this list.

      The vita was never affordable for the masses like the Nintendo handhelds. It wasn't like you could expect all your friends to play vita games with you in the same way that you could trade Pokémon on a Gameboy, play mario kart on a DS or just use the switch in local coop.

There were a lot of cool ps1 era ports like tomb raider, tony hawk pro skater, pandemonium, worms world party etc. I think i like elder scrolls travel game and mgs the most as far as the original titles go. Also it had local multiplayer and my cousin also owned an n gage and you could emulate nes and play together which was nice at the time.

      I mean, as someone who owned all of the Nintendo handhelds since gbc, n gage (yep), and PSP, which was my favourite at the time, I was really disappointed by the Vita and in the end switch became what I actually wanted from the next PSP in a way. I really do not understand what makes you guys like the console, honestly, I own most of the Sony exclusive games on it and most are pretty mediocre (and PlayStation fans seem to not care about those franchises either, considering they are not around anymore). Even after hacking the console, I still find emulating ps1 on a phone with a controller as a much better option, considering that Vita has a touchpad instead of second triggers. And imagine the pain of downloading useless DLC for some games which took a lot of memory on that expensive proprietary cards and not having the ability to transfer save files which even smartphones of the time could do. At least there is now a save manager for hacked vitas.

    Okay I missed this poll but holy crap, the PS Vita got done dirty on this list (kinda like how it got done dirty IRL. Big RIP). In spite of its library hiccups, you COULD buy a lot of PSP games for it digitally and that's certainly a plus. That said, overall, I really just have this to say:
    I feel bad for the Game Gear being in D tier but I get why. The VIta definitely deserved to be in B tier at least because of how powerful it was, the combination of its own library and part of the PSP library, and remote play. The 3DS I feel deserved A tier for it's capabilities, huge library of its own games and virtual console, and backwards compatibility with the DS. That said, while I certainly like the DS, 3DS, and Vita more, I 100% get why the GBA is "the King" of the handhelds and I'm not offended by that whatsoever.

    I had the original GBA, but I won the SP from Yoplait Go-Gurt. That was such an improvement with the backlight screen. I went back and played through all my Game Boy games once I could really see them. The 3DS, though, is the system I have the most games for. It's the one I would put in my pocket when I went to the mall, movie theater, or Zelda Symphony to get StreetPasses. I would put the 3DS one step above the GBA.

    4:39 Well as contemporary as you could get with one thumbpad in a time when the industry standard had been two for a while. I mean it was released in the same console generation as PS2, GameCube and Xbox with its infamous "Duke" controller (ironically the extra two buttons on the Duke was likely the basis for the extra pair of shoulder buttons in the generation that followed as the thing also had introduced trigger buttons to the console controller scene. That means the extra two buttons were the equivalent of LB and RB).

      I agree with games mattering a lot but I think other features should matter too like how was it at the time etc. OG steam deck model really didn't have a good display and pretty bad battery life it's much more expensive than it's other handheld cousins and the cultural impact and popularity is a lot smaller. The steam deck OLED improved on it a lot though. Like if it was just power and the amount of games was the only factor and if the rog ally or Legion was on the list would that be S tier? I don't think so because windows on a handheld is just really cumbersome and bad user experience, they're heavy and big which is a big downside to people with smaller hands, the battery life is even worse due to the higher power and it's just very uncreative just copying what the steam deck does and they are really expensive even compared to the deck. There's a ton of value in a device that just works for a casual audience but for the more hardcore technical crowd of course they will prefer pc handhelds.

I get that people only started to look at it that way with the PSP because the games got longer, but most 8-16 bit games (aside from RPGs of course) were only about an hour long, their length though was disguised behind the difficulty of those games.

    I'm willing to bet Switch will tie with PS2 in the next video but Wii, Gamecube and 360 will likely make it into A or B tier and Xbone, PS5 and XBSXS will be in C or lower but not below Sega Saturn or Wii U which will likely trend near the bottom (even though the Sega Saturn doesn't really deserve it) above the Ataris. Master System will likely not rank high as the English speaking part of the world isn't as familiar with it as the Game Gear. Also N64 will likely be somewhere in the middle below GameCube, NES and SNES and Sega Genesis will be somewhere around the SNES as both are around equally popular. I think both Switch and PS2 deserve the #1 spot for different reasons but my vote was for PS2.

    I don't consider the PSP's memory stick (which was also used for Sony's digital cameras) to have been a detriment. All flash based storage was still pretty pricey back in the early 2000s, and it wasn't only Sony making memory sticks (Sandisk, Kingston, etc), unlike with the Vita's memory cards, which are totally proprietary (only the Vita used those cards, and only Sony manufactured them)

    • @Antiheld1989
      @Antiheld1989 10 месяцев назад +1

      I kinda disagree about the prices. For example, a 2GB SanDisk SD card cost about $40. The SanDisk 2GB memory stick cost $55. This is roughly 40% higher costs. And with smaller sizes the price difference was even bigger, because on smaller file sizes you had much more sales with SD cards.
      The price of those cards isn't a reason for Sony not establishing a lasting place in the handheld segment. Both the price difference and the impact of the higher prices in my opinion often gets blown out of proportion. Still the memory stick in comparison was kinda expensive.

      @kylemurphy597 10 месяцев назад

      @@Antiheld1989 I was not expecting a response to this post, especially not one that was well worded and pleasant like yours.
      I brought up the memory stick thing because not very long after the PSP launched, memory stick prices were going down substantially, whereas the Vita memory cards (sticks?) never really dropped in price that I can remember, and that was one of the reasons I was hesitant in getting a Vita, and figured I was far from alone in that regard. But then again, I didn't get my Vita until after the new model was released, and I got it from a friend who had an 8GB card in it, so maybe they did drop in price? Regardless, I love 'em both, and felt the Vita should have been as well received as the PSP was.

    It's crazy how many of it's competitors in the early 90's were just as good as the Gameboy advance a whole generation later, only being failed by prices and battery power. Apart from the pokemon, zelda and wario games, I can't really stand most Gameboy era games (inc GBC). Even the mario games aren't that great on the system, especially those for the original handheld.

      The Zodiac and Gizmondo even had media features before the PSP by a year or 2.
      Even PSP had add-ons (like Gameboy Camera) for camera and GPS, Gizmondo had it built in.
      How is it not better oh right sales, library as if that's all that matters. Tech matters but not to most people apparently. Gaming bubbles sigh.
      I like PSP but won't deny other aspects many systems had still. I don't put my PSP nostalgia on the line.
      Glad to see someone else that knows their handhelds.
      Not oh Nintendo, Sega, Sony and push the other great to the side.
      Sales don't equal quality and popularity/nostalgia don't either.
      I doubt we see the Xavix port (Wii Sports like controllers before the Wii came out, ex Nintendo employees) or Nuon in a console video.
      At least some people use the internet for videos diving into them and their history or search engines to research more then popularity bubbles and nostalgia most are too blinded by of the surface.

    Honestly I’d say the Original Xbox.
    Not only was it the first console to have a built in hard disk drive, which paved the way for larger more in-depth games, but you also had innovations like Xbox Live. To me it was truly a special piece of my childhood and I still remember to this day when my Grandpa gave me his Xbox with Mech Warrior and Halo 2. Furthermore the Xbox spawned a generation of new stories and games, like Halo, that are still loved to this day. To not give it the recognition it deserves for spearheading the Modern Console Wars would be a shame.

    • @Antiheld1989
      @Antiheld1989 10 месяцев назад

      I agree that this list is more a list of who grew up owning it. Additionally the Gameboy is probably the most important handheld in history.
      But if you look at those statistics the Swich already outperforms the Gameboy in many aspects. The Switch already sold more than the GB ever did. If you take into account that the 118 million sold systems only because of the extremly long lifespan in consideration of the that the higher sales numbers of the Switch and the DS seem like greater achievements. Even the GBA that had an inhouse competitor with the DS just after 3 years seems more impressive when you consider GB and GBC had 12 years without a successor to reach those 118 millions sales. When you compare software sales, both DS and Switch outperform GB. When you consider inflation DS and GB price where not that different and in one league with Switch Lite. Therefore, many of they key numbers aren't that special or great with Gameboy. And I don't know if it is a good thing that Nintendo did not come up with a real successor sooner.
      What makes the Gameboy special is the impact it had in general with isn't reflected just in numbers.

    I think the rankings are all tinged by nostalgia, and it's probably impossible to avoid it. The regular gameboy advance was nearly impossible to see the screen, and the GBA SP is difficult to hold with adult sized-hands and the buttons don't have a good feel to them. My favorite is the PSP, but liked you showed, you need to pop the battery pack out when you're not using it for more than a few days. The Switch should be the one on top, but that system doesn't run at full speed in handheld mode, and some games like Doom are almost unplayable as a handheld. Maybe the Switch is a console with a hand-held mode, and not a true portable. If you want a portable where nearly every game is a hit, the Neo Geo Pocket Color was a lot of fun, and I never played a bad game for it.

Most of the voters are going to be flandrew’s subscribers, most of flandrew’s content is about games from the 2000s, therefore most of the voters are probably people with a particular interest in 2000s era video games.
