Just some technical info for people who wonder why cardboard tests are so brutal on knife edges. Cardboard especially the thick brown type used in boxes is actually not just made of paper or refined wood. It actually has chalk, clay and glue inside it as well, sometimes other things also. So remember when you do cardboard edge retention tests you aren't just "Slicing paper" these tests are actually more damaging than you think.
I think everyone going to say “don’t buy the h1 steel it’s very weak” doesn’t understand Spyderco said it’s a little softer then their normal steel still making it a steel far stronger then anyone would probably ever need, thank you for shedding light on this
Enjoyed the video. My Pacific Salt has been my edc for about a year now and love it. I strop it every couple days and sharpen it when it needs it with Arkansas stones. It come off the black ark screaming sharp. Bought the Salt 1 so I would have a smaller blade but the Pacific is the one I carry all the time. I've had no issue with edge retention at all, it's as good as anything else I've carried and better than a lot of them.
good work guys, cardboard is notorious for dulling a blade and I'm impressed with the results. I picked up a serrated salt ladybug to neck carry and not have to worry about it getting soaked etc ( I live in the uk so rain is plentiful) thanks again :)
I am planning on getting one for when I go shell fishing. I can't decide if I should get the plain edge or the serrated. Good video. Now I'm sure the steel is good to go.
Jameson Cross don’t know if you got one yet but judging by my serrated salt 1 I could highly recommend the serrated H1. I ordered the same knife as in the video because I want to try it plain edged.
Have you guys ever run a cutting torture test like this comparing the H1 PE to the H1 SE? Based on work hardening (and my own experience) I'd expect the SE to hold up a lot better!
Very surprised that it held its edge so well. Never wanted to try a blade with the H1, but this vid changed my view... I felt pitty for Frankie for having a hard time cutting and cutting and cutting and .......
each time after you cut things like cupboard before you text it, try wipe the lint on the edge first, that would get rid of the cupboard pieces stuck on the knife, which affects your sharpness test.
H1 is in fact a work hardened steel. That doesn't mean it gets harder the more you use it. Sal Glesser said the grinding process when making the serrations increases the Rockwell to around 60+ on the serrated edge. He said they don't know why it does that but it just does. Their engineers don't even know why. I had a serrated Tasman salt for over a year. That fucker was close to a razor edge by the time I have it to a family member and I Never sharpened it.
People think carbon is the only thing that makes steel hard, this steel use nitrogen in place of carbon, not much nitrogen by weight but because it's the number of atoms that counts, it might still make a lot of hardening effects like carbon does. Any ways it should probably not out perform something like s30v or better steel though.
Good point, the number of nitrogen atoms is high despite the low mass. I was still impressed with how well this steel did considering also this somewhat shallow angle. -bird
For the same edge angle and thickness as a flat grind, a hollow grind leaves a lot more "meat" on the back of the blade, therefore making the blade a lot stronger. Good for blades that will mostly be used on boats and by scuba divers where it will do as much prying as cutting.
This is why I hate cutting cardboard, the stuff is very abrasive and all the tape and glue messes with cutting performance a lot. Use some wd40, balistol or some other solvent to get rid of the junk on the blade.
+Gary Ritter I have not tested it yet but all the specs and charts show M390 to be very high performing in both those categories. Otherwise in my experience, S35VN is very good.
HaHa . . . Stupid Spyderco! I so want this knife. Even though I have been swimming with a VG-10 Delica and had No Rust Issues, I want the larger Plain Egde knife for fishing & maybe a FS for tasks associated with firefighting.

That's the same reason cardboard works decent as a strop.

Soft steels are weaker than harder steels
Well said, and steel composition is really important. There are some 60HrC steels that do yield better edge retention than other steels at 65HRC
The Salt 1 w/H1 has been my EDC for well over a decade. Won’t rust, extremely lightweight, holds a decent edge, and easy to sharpen.

awesome, thanks for the feedback!
Just picked up this same knife, (brand new) at a local pawn shop for 30 bucks!
nice score!
bluesksc1 Damn it, lol just paid $80 for one...
👍's up and enjoyed. My favorite cutting test. May the blessings of the Lord be upon you all.
Thank you Randy!
This knife really appeals to me, it's a hard use working knife that happens to be rust proof, definitely putting this one on the Christmas list.
the steel really impressed us
Issued these for the Navy where i worked. They were great as stated for salt/water resistance but the edge would dull out quickly
thats pretty cool you got them issued, thanks for watching!
You guys do a nice job getting the edge back on those blades
Thanks for watching!
Every time I watch this, Frankie gets a new job...
haha! she's had the same one since this vid

Ty guys for the inf9rmation. I love your channel. I learn something with every video keep up the good work
+Gary Ritter thank you for watching!

I felt pitty for Frankie for having a hard time cutting and cutting and cutting and .......
lol she volunteered to do the cutting!
Great test! gotta pick one up!
spydy needs to sponsor this video lol
We are all for that! Thanks James!
Good work. Very informative vid. H1 is good steel. And most of all it is highly rust resistant. I like it almost as much as Vg10.
VG-10 is another fantastic steel, thanks for watching!
That is one very sharp blade!!!!! 👍🏼 love these videos!!
Thank you for watching!
Great video !!! I have heard that H1 steel gets harder with sharpening. Can you validate this claim at all? I own one this blade as well and love it.
I have never heard this, this is only the 3rd time I have sharpened H1 so not a ton of experience with it.
Great video as always guys
Thanks 007!
each time after you cut things like cupboard before you text it, try wipe the lint on the edge first, that would get rid of the cupboard pieces stuck on the knife, which affects your sharpness test.
Yep, for this test we picked up a lot of tape residue.
+BirdShot IV you can get rid of the tape glue with crc556 easily but I often tear off the tapes from cupboard before cutting them.
that would be ideal for testing I suppose, but I think we might look for a better material.
Impressive! ...Nice close ups too...TFS
+Dirt and Rust thanks for watching!
great data point guys!
we were impressed with this steel, thanks for watching!
Great review lady, you think you can use in the kitchen as everyday utility, food prep and even in the dishwasher?
I think it COULD be used as a kitchen knife everyday, it certainly won't rust
There is a claim that serrated h1 is harder. Something like 62+ hard well because h1 is a work hardening steel. I don't own any h1 but I just heard it
Interesting, 62 is VERY hard.

Are you guys able to do a clean figure 8 slice/cut with your Aqua yet?
Heck of a blade!
Thanks for watching Rich!
How about using 3/8 or bigger rope for your test. You know the one they use in knife cutting competition or certification.
+Patrick Girard that's what we are looking at, we think we could do a more controlled test that way as well.
awesome work!
thanks for watching!

+BirdShot IV also strangely spyderco almost put hollow grind on these h1 steel knives exclusively, I don't know why, any takes on that?
For the same edge angle and thickness as a flat grind, a hollow grind leaves a lot more "meat" on the back of the blade, therefore making the blade a lot stronger. Good for blades that will mostly be used on boats and by scuba divers where it will do as much prying as cutting.
bullsharkreef hollow grinds chip out more
Not at first
been wanting to get this blade for a while now
It's a great knife for a reasonable price, thanks for watching!
more artwork from Frankie please!
I think this will be happening more :) thank you for commenting! - Frankie
Wow!, a good strop would bring this back pretty good.
this is true, we would like to do some strop testing in the future
This is why I hate cutting cardboard, the stuff is very abrasive and all the tape and glue messes with cutting performance a lot. Use some wd40, balistol or some other solvent to get rid of the junk on the blade.
Yep, we are going to need a better cutting media altogether
Cardboard has clay in it
It's very light weight and thin profile for such a big knife .
Which angle do you sharpen the blade on? 40 degree (20 degree each side), or at 30 degree (15 on each side)?
18.5 per side
in your opinion which steel is the best for both corrosion and edge retention?
+Gary Ritter I have not tested it yet but all the specs and charts show M390 to be very high performing in both those categories. Otherwise in my experience, S35VN is very good.
i cant wait to get a spiderco.
They are some awesome knives for sure!
totally want one!!! spydie head here!!!
Join the club lol
So this knife is good for edc then? Good video! :)
in our experience, absolutely!
Thanks! Glad to see a family that shares the same passion. :)
Nice knife it was my birthday yesterday day
Happy birthday Max!
Hello again kids I just received my yellow Pacific Salt H1 today and its great :-) you just look at the blade and it cuts you :-)
nice!
what kind of sharpener do you use?
looks like a kme sharpener
This is the KME sharpener, fixed angle system. About $200
Nice steel for sure.. Looks very good..can penguins fly? lol random question
This one flies thru meat with that cleaver!
Cardboard is a fast way to take an edge off a knife
+buzzsah and it's certainly always available, thanks for watching!
Nonono no. No. Dull the knife against the knife it self. Batoning with very hard blades for ya.
Hey Guys(and Girl) as per the Spyderco rep. on a previous video as you use it and the more you sharpen it the harder the edge becomes .
who makes the mess cleans up the mess "My Mom" :)
Swept it all over to the trash can this morning, almost one sweep! -bird
HaHa . . . Stupid Spyderco! I so want this knife. Even though I have been swimming with a VG-10 Delica and had No Rust Issues, I want the larger Plain Egde knife for fishing & maybe a FS for tasks associated with firefighting.
interesting, thanks for commenting. I think when it comes to salt water thats the biggest plus for the H1 steel
