Just reminds me of what I did in 2018. I had figured most of these by accompanying my friends’ car purchases and once falling victim to these gimmicks when I bought my first car in the US.
    But not the next time…
It was a 2018 Black Friday; there were offers everywhere for New Cars. I sat in front of my system at 5AM since most of the dealers were open from 4AM on the day.
There was a text message option in every dealer's site in Richmond, Virginia area, just started texting about the 2018 Toyota RAV4 “OTD” price. Trust me, they will cut the chase and come to the point. They will give you the number without explaining what is what. Saves a lot of time and energy for both parties. Don’t waste energy by negotiating. Once you have the OTD, skip the dealer and text the next one. If the price is higher, share the screenshot of the previous best price, he will for sure beat the price to get the business. Once you have the best price, again don’t negotiate further; move to the next dealer. Repeat the same. Trust me; it saves a lot of energy and time. Also, you realize how much margin these dealers keep on the price. Once you arrived at the best price in the town, without sharing the screenshot, say you have an offer cheaper than this say $500-$1000 lesser. At this point, you will know they can’t go down further. Don’t stop here do the same with other dealers who matched the best price. Just to confirm.
If nobody is able to go down further, you know you’ve hit the rock bottom of the price. Now, hold on to the price, you start your negotiation on free all-weather mats, rails, trunk organize, and all. Trust me they will throw those in for the heck of closing the business because they have already spent enough time with you and it was their target day too.
Once all agreed, you close your laptop and go out for the real car shopping. When I got my RAV4, the dealer was not happy at all, just wanted to do the formalities and get rid of me. LOL. That’s a good sign you’re really getting a killer deal.
I got my brand new 2018 Toyota RAV4 LE for $17,300 with a lot of other accessories. The first OTD was $22,000 (which is already a Black Friday Deal price plus the next year Toyota was remodeled one). Here the intention is to reveal how much they can go down further from the already discounted price.
When buying a car, one should never mix, identifying the car and closing the deal. These two should be treated as two distinct steps. I would suggest do each of these steps in isolation. Never mix them up. Also never walk into the dealership with an ounce of hope that you can negotiate and get the best deal. We all know who wins who loses. Sometimes, they will make us look like we are the best negotiators in the world and got the best deal, but just to realize later it was the other way 😀

      Excellent strategy.
I am planning to buy a new car in next few months.
Will these strategies still work during the chip shortage and demand to buy is higher.
I already see that used car prices are almost Same as new car.
So worried if they will really negotiate and provide a best price.

Sir I did few techniques you mentioned for recent car purchase and that helped a lot. When I purchase my new car 5yrs back lot of things they screwed up by changing my mind. I agree with what you say about do our homework before buying car. Good to know the word “Out the Door” price. Because I asked that dealer manager to provide the final price which I need to pay and i told them to reduce $500 less than what they offer. Initially they confuse me by telling different breakup then finally they said okay for the price I asked. Main hidden price in car buying is Dealer & Handling Fees in USA.

That's nice Vijay, I did the same thing. Only difference is I had no credit history, but I had taken a pre-approved loan from DCU only after that I had engaged the dealership. Unfortunately they feel Indians haggle a lot so the perception was shown to me as well. The model(VIN) they gave me on the email was no more in their inventory so the sales guy was not able to offer at that price. I stood on that price, I said I had no preference on the color, he went in and came back multiple times said if you are ready to buy in next 3 days I will offer you the same price. I accepted it.
