"I have either been forgotten / Or I was never seen / Now I'm in the negative space between"
The video is of their hometown, Buffalo, and I've always taken the whole package to be a metaphor for flashes of glory but not a blaze, slowly fading away despite all your rage and fear. Not everyone makes it out, not everyone makes something of themselves, some people just live their reality until they're gone and it's like they never existed.

Also a melodic chorus in the context of a live show can be much more impactful because that's when the audience can participate, especially when the rest of the vocals are harsh

Been listening to ETID since 2004, and they always remained one of the best bands I have ever listened to. This song is the only song they have ever made that actually brings me to the verge of tears just with the anguish and pain you can sense in the movements. It always builds to no release but at the same time the release is always there just in a different way. The sadness is the release.

My favorite part of this video was listening to a song I like while you offered nothing of value.

Of course you noted that it had to be intentional - the anti-climax works for me in painting the track with a very cold and distant energy which is thematically enriched by the lyrics and accompanying video with its candidly bleak interpretation of what it is to grow old in the icy tundra of Buffalo, NY and the tough-skin required of someone who must do so, whether or not by choice. I find the themes of introspection/reflection, regret, hopelessness are prevalent throughout every aspect of this track; and the build-up to drop-out only to a somber vocal over a longing melancholic riff really just drives it all home for me. That said, appreciate your analysis as always! Really enjoyed the deep-thought that your playing devil’s advocate provoked 😂

This song always speaks to me in a way that is exactly how you describe, it’s a very isolationist song in it’s nature, every build-up leading to no release, every piece of grandeur still melancholic and/or gone at best. I’ve never listened to the whole album because Every Time I Die’s usual style isn’t really my thing, but this song always gives me chills.

Those build ups to let downs were very much intentional. This song was a tribute to their hometown, and also given it was the last song on the album, it was meant to bring more emotion than anything. You listen to more ETID, you’ll find some CRAZY heavy stuff. Idk how to describe it because they hit many sounds, but in general they are like a hardcore/post hardcore band with a southern twang. Listen to “Moor”. It’s a deep-cut one. If you want a heavy one listen to “Hostile Architecture” off their latest album.
    RIP ETID

All that build-up for nothing? I have to disagree with that assessment, it leads to a logical conclusion and a dispersion of energy that was present from the get-go. It feels like an answer to a question being asked throughout the whole song. The entire last part with the additional mini build-up seems like they were answering the questions presented (sonically) throughout the song. Still, really appreciate your assessments of songs.

This band has been such a huge part of my life, and Map Change specifically was such a cathartic listen that it wet my eyes listening to it just now. Long live ETID

Glad you got around to more ETID, easily my favorite band. As you can tell between this song and Planet Shit, they can deviate quite a bit in their musical style. One thing to note is when writing this album, the vocalist Keith's wife was in the hospital with pregnancy complications and almost lost both his wife and first child in the process. A lot of this album focuses on his struggles dealing with almost losing them and how helpless and hopeless he felt in this time of his life. As always, really really hope you get around to more ETID. They've got deeply personal songs like this and extremely blistering fast paced mosh-inducing songs like Planet Shit.

I love seeing people newly introduced to ETID but its so funny to be reminded not everyone listens to entire genres that the whole theme is scream verse sing chorus

I remember checking these guys out back when I first got into metalcore. They were definitely one of the bands that left me cold at the time because they leaned more into the "core" aspects rather than the "metal" aspects. After over a decade of not having heard them I can still hear in this what I wasn't enthused about back then (even though I don't remember this specific track; maybe never even heard it). It's not bad by any means, but the punkier/punk-influenced metal gets the more it usually tends to turn me off. There are some nice touches here in the riffs and shifts in style/tone, and I also kinda dig the main clean melody, but I think when the whole cathartic/emotional element of core-styles don't connect with you there's always going to be a huge gap there that stops me from really loving it.
21:45 Mixed metaphors (technical term is catachresis, which a rhetorical term for any unconventional or mistaken use of language) are fine when they're intentional, which this clearly was. The problem with mixed metaphors is people often don't realize they're mixing them and produce unintentionally comic effects. However, the most famous soliloquy in the English language (To Be or Not to Be) uses a mixed metaphor: "to take arms against a sea of troubles," which, perhaps ironically, illustrates the point Hamlet is making: you can't take up arms against a sea, because it would useless. So one literally can't defeat the "sea of troubles" in life or in one's mind. The idea of sinking to the peak is done intentionally to produce a kind of vertiginous effect (I've done this before myself in an alliterative verse poem I wrote).
