  • I was lucky to hook and land 2 nice Bluefin Tuna in Monterey Bay, CA. This was Saturday, October 17th, 2015. I was using slow trolled live mackerel. The lucky fishing rod is an Ugly Stick Custom, Medium-Heavy 30-60 lb line rated. My son won this rod at the 2014 Coastside Fishing Club Halibut Derby Raffle. I thought it was too stout for any fishing I'd see in Monterey Bay.. until these Bluefin Tuna showed up. So far that lucky rod had hooked and landed 5 Bluefin Tuna since the end of September. It has a Shimano TLD20 reel spooled with 40 lb Suffix Mono and a 40 lb Florocarbon Leader.

    Very nice job catching the Bluefin solo. Why did you not bleed the fish? There are places just behind the pectoral fin that can be punctured and the wash down hose used to deliver sea water to the gills while the fish bleeds out.

    WOW!! I went tuna fishing back a few years back.. but we had to go way off the coast to get to them... how far out did you go?

    • @2101Striper
      @2101Striper  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Ray. Last year was an anomaly. Bluefin tuna rarely visit our waters like they did. The Bluefin were less than 20nm out of Santa Cruz. In this video, I think I picked up these fish about 15 nm out of Santa Cruz.. roughly 10 nm off of Davenport.

      2101Striper thats what I thought. We got tuna a while back when the water got warm... But we had to go way out to get to them. They werent huge but still a blast to catch. My first one was hooked in the tail... Lol

    Wow, what an awesome video Kevin, I stayed hooked all the way to the end, the way you manage it all is pretty awesome.
    How heavy did you have your drag set, how deep were you trolling? Amazing fish man !

      @2101Striper  8 лет назад +1

      +John ReynoldsThanks John. I had about 10 perhaps 12 lbs of drag set. That had to be my best fishing day ever.

    Thanks for sharing. Do you mind sharing how many feet of line you’re giving between the downrigger clip and your bait? Are tuna shy to downrigger wires and its vibrations?

    • @2101Striper
      @2101Striper  3 года назад

      I was running the live Mack’s 200 ft behind the Scotty clips. I don’t know if it helped with shy fish or not, but it sure seemed to work. Earlier that year we hooked our first ever bft on the deep diver that was furthest from the boat, roughly 200 ft back, so we assumed the fish were boat shy.

      @@samm2032 When does Salmon open up at Bodega? I'm guessing you've not been fishing near SLO this year given the pandemic? How's the 2301 running?

    Love watching all your videos! Hope the Blue Fin come back again! Tried for WSB this year yet?

    • @2101Striper
      @2101Striper  8 лет назад

      Thank you. I haven't been out much this year with the lack of local salmon. Yes, those Bluefin were something I'll never forget. I think the last time they were in our waters was 20 years ago in the 90's. I haven't sunk any time into WSB yet. With all the Halibut reports I've been seeing, I may have to get out there and drag some gear. I'll be after Salmon later this month up at Bodega Bay. There's good salmon fishing there right now.. I just hope the fish are still around when I get up there.

    What is nm lol ?

    • @2101Striper
      @2101Striper  8 лет назад

      In this context, nm is for nautical mile. 1 nm is equivalent to 1.15 statute miles. There are a number of ways it is abbreviated. Your question had me look at Wikipedia wondering if I'd crossed some units. Here's what I found: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautical_mile

      Thanks. I prefer the leave the clicker on if I have a video camera on. I like to hear drag pay out on videos, else there's no indication that the fish is taking line on the video.

    ENDANGERED SPECIES look, I am a noble bluefin tuna myself and nowadays it's hard to find friends because it's been 2 years since I've seen a fellow bluefin, the best explanation is that there are only about 25,000 of us left and this does not help

    • @theropodia
      @theropodia 7 лет назад

      Please do your research. These are a completely different species. Pacific Bluefin are closely managed and not endangered. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluefin_tuna
