  • After 4 skunks in a row, finally managed to hook into a nice White Seabass. The video segment is just the last minute and a half of a roughly 10 minute "fight". This was the first day out with the new Avet SX fishing reel mounted on the new Shimano Trevala TVC70ML rod, and this is the rod that got hit first. I found that the drag set to 6 lbs at strike was too much, and backed it off during the fight to about 4 or 5 lbs. The Trevala Rod felt good on this big fish, with a bend all the way through the handle. The Avet reel performed perfectly, and was more than enough for this 50 lb WSB. 10-29-2011

That fish looks awesome! That little Avet SX reel can hold its own and then some.

Nice catch. I just got a trevala rod and can't wait to use it this summer.

Nice go pro video. White sea bass aka "ghosts" are great eating fish. When hooked their initial run is incredibly fast and powerful. There are many stories about getting spooled, broken 40 pound lines, and hooks straightened out.:0 Having hooked and landing more than 25 large White Sea bass one thing is true. They make an initial run of about 50 yards against a drag set at 5 pounds strike. Some will change direction and make another similar run. After that they are tired and often are brought to the boat almost belly up and nearly dead like the one on this video. These fish make people panic and try to stop them on the initial run. A reel with 100 yards of 20 pound test line is sufficient for these "beasts" that straighten hooks, break 40 pound test, and spool 250 yards of line according to legend. . Be sure to keep the otoliths (ear bones) that are in the head behind the eyes. They are like spear shaped pearls that can be as large as 2 cm and quite beautiful. .

Few of my friends like getting up early, have patience and the sea stamina to enjoy a long day's fishing on the ocean... so I'm often left with the choice of going solo or staying home. I have not run for Tuna solo... yet. =]

It's a TVC-70ML Trevala. I'm not sure which generation it is. but it is the TC4 construction. I bought it as I liked the full bend of the rod. It's spooled with 100yd of 25lb Big Game mono on top of roughly 250-300ydof 30 lb spectra. For big White Seabass, I back off on the drag, down to 4 or 5 lbs. I'd guess this rod is fine for Albacore and Yellowtail, but definitely too light for Yellowfin Tuna.
