I still think it sounds fresh, not dated. And Steve's singing is wonderful! The John Barleycorn album was huge in its day and a for a long time afterward. I heard it all the time on classic rock radio many, many years after its release
Love that you love Steve Winwood! He's never gotten the love/respect he should have. Amazing career where he's constantly reinvented himself while remaining Steve Winwood.
That's why I watch these reaction videos ... someone'll listen to a song I haven't heard since high school (or some other point in my life) and suddenly I'm back, remembering old friends (and enemies :D ) and things we did ...
With all due respect to his 80's music, I think Steve was at his peak in the 60's and 70's in the Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, and Traffic, and when he returned to that brand of music in the 90's and after. Barleycorn, Low Spark, and the self titled album are all incredible works by Traffic.
I actually don’t care for Winwood at all in the 80s, but he stays way up top in my favorites list just because of his contributions in the 60s and 70s. Robert Palmer is the same way. Never really liked 80s Robert Palmer. 70s Palmer, though? Goddamn he was killin it. Clapton would be another, I suppose.
Funny, a lot of the bands that I loved for their 60's, 70's music, I completely turned off of their 80's albums. Dylan, Stones, definitely Steve Winwood!, Stevie Wonder, Santana... I'm sure there are a bunch more.
The title track to this album, John Barleycorn Must Die, is a complete change of pace for Traffic, as it's an old epic English folk ballad. Off course, Steve Winwood can make anything sound good.
Such a classic. The drums. and bass stand out as well as the keyboard. Throw in Steve Winwood's voice and Hammond organ playing and damn you cant miss.
Funny thing being underated, this is my favorite tune from little Stevie's entire wonderful catalog. I'm so happy watching you appreciate it like I do. I'm an old man compared to you, from a vastly different background. I love your mission and message. Yes great music brings people together, and this combination of keys, bass, drums and his voice... You felt it, we saw it again through your joy. Thanks and don't let the tube overlords ever take your passion, keep plugging we will keep watching. Peace, love and applesauce!
@@NickLandess For sure. It grooves like crazy plus it has a little extra pep in its step compared to the studio version. And a nice tasty guitar solo from Dave Mason (for once, Dave playing guitar solos in Traffic ha!)
My all-time favourite Traffic track. Thank you, Jamel. Just the way it smoothly transitions between funky verse and full-on prog rock chorus has always amazed me.
Goose bump central. That goes for this song, which I've always loved, and Jamal's reaction as well - his loving this song so much on first listen is absolutely contagious! Thanks to Jamal, on many levels.
This song gets right into the pocket. What an extraordinary voice Winwood has. And his ability on keyboards and guitars are stellar. This album came out in 1970 and it's timeless. Traffic was always underrated.
I'm so excited for you to finally hear this!! Coolest song ever! Totally wore out my vinyl of this album. I hope you'll give the rest of the record a listen as well. Glad is great, too! Man, you just made my night!
That’s the late, great Jim Capaldi on drums. Two other songs you need to hear from this same album - John Barleycorn and Every Mothers Son. Both great tracks
So glad you featured this song. One of Traffic’s gems. But then they’re all jewels. I adore Steve Windwood’s Traffic repertoire! Please check out his songs on Traffic’s album by the same name - especially the first 10 songs. Every single one is a banger! Oh boy, nostalgia’s got me now!
Discovered the “album” at 17th birthday, loved it, love it at 66 just as much......then followed him ever since....You keep discovering all my favorites....Joni, Gordon, Floyd, Al, Dan, Lynard, Led, Johnny, Willie, Carlos, Neil, John, Stevie Wonder, Windwood. Thank You. Peace
Appreciate your reaction. I grew up listening to Traffic from their start. I saw them live at The Fillmore and have remained a fan ever since. This band had it together. Church baby!
My favorite Traffic album. Every song is epic IMO. The organ /piano solo is beyond excellent. I played this song in my car extra load and pulled into a convince store. The man standing outside began dancing and asked me what funk group it was.
Another great reaction to one of my favorite Traffic songs. This album actually started out as Steve's first solo album but all came together to be another phase of Traffic. You never disappoint, Jamel.
I bought this CD a few weeks ago without knowing the songs. This one immediately jumped out at me. Jesus, the GROOVE is unbelievable! I'll be learning the bassline to this over the next few days.
The face he makes at 2:10 reminds me of that feeling you get after a few beers when you haven't drank in a while. A purely great and energizing feeling.
Awww yes Jamel. I can stop pestering you now to react to this song. I knew you would enjoy it, especially the middle section. I can't count how many times I've listened to this song and it gets better every time. I agree about the low view count, alot of people are missing out on a great song. So glad you enjoyed this.
Imagine trying coming up with a song, and you’re looking at empty pages. And then after further consideration, you come up with singularly one of the greatest songs of all time Pure genius
Finally hittin' up one of my favorite British bands! Those guys are/were amazing musicians! And yes, they are horribly underrated. It's up to younger fellows like you to keep them in view, so well done!
Thanks for reacting to this criminally ignored group, they deserve more recognition. I hope you'll get around to reacting to their song 'John Barleycorn'.
This is my favorite Traffic song, and for the exact reasons you loved it--that groove and swing is something that would make Chuck Brown and Junkyard Band envious.
Thanks for your comments on this song. I bought this album when it came out in 1971, when I was seventeen. Then fast forward to today when it played on the radio station here. I got out an old electric guitar and just jammed along with it in the key of D major. It got me thinking, let me hear the original on RUclips and then I saw your video. It’s so cool to someone digging and grooving to it. Yeah, it’s a good one isn’t it? Thanks my man, for sharing and explaining how good it is. In fact, that entire album is really good. Check it out!
FYI: this album started out as a Steve Winwood Solo album~ he played and sang almost everything aside from Jim Capaldi's drums and Chris Wood's sax and flute: vocals, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, organ, piano, electric piano, percussion! Amazing talent- so glad you discovered Traffic!
Oooo - I didn't know that one. There's a nice touch of a Rev Brother Al Green-like sound to Steve's vocal line in there. Steve Winwood was born in Birmingham, England, but I'm sure his voice was born in Birmingham, Alabama! If you want to try more Traffic, try the beautiful sad "No face no name no number".
Dag! I can remember hitchhiking to my local record store: "C & D Record Bar" to buy this Incredible "TRAFFIC" LP and that LONG TRIP back home and the Great Anticipation, on my return home! God Bless the MUSIC & THE BAND! They have NEVER let me down! Cheers! ...Newk from Kentucky
The incomparable voice of Steve Winwood! His first hit was “Give Me Some Lov’n” back in the early 60s when he was with the Spencer Davis Group. He was barely 17.
Winwood undoubtedly is the most versatile singer rock music produced .He is the secret weapon of rock music. He can do it all- R&B, Folk, Psychedelic, Rock and Pop .In addition a peerless keyboardist and a mean guitarist too . He has the backbone for many bands - Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind faith, With as a duo Eric Clapton and solo. People know Steve Winwood , heard him since 60s , enjoyed his music in 2019 ( Dear Mr. Fantasy at the start of the movie Avengers Endgame) but he doesn't get the appreciation he truly deserves
FINALLY !!!! Thank you Jamel for getting into this and I know you're glad you did !!! This whole fantastic album is so diverse, from spooky acoustic folk to jazzy funky rock and hits each of it's themes perfectly. Steve Winwood is just an incredible talent and plays keys, guitar, bass, organ, piano, sings and his late great band mates Chris Wood on reeds and woodwinds and the superb and underrated drum master Jim Capaldi play beautifully. As a drummer myself I've stolen some of Jim's swift and nifty drum licks. Keep it up and thank you. Love from Ned and Janet in Mallorca, Spain.
@Jonathan Elswick Hey Jonathan, I know what you mean. Once you hear them, you just want more. These guys were on my turntable from 8th or 9th grade and ever after. Got any favorites ?
@Jonathan Elswick Hey, my name is Ned. My wife, Janet and I share the YT account. With that outta the way, you're a lucky fellow for seeing Steve who somehow survived a long long rock n roll life with his insane abilities and good looks still intact. That alone is an incredible achievement. He also has something really special / positive about him too. Always awesome even during his more commercial years like Arc of a Diver. I'll check out the album you suggested
This was so good. Most of us gen x’s grew up loving Steve Winwood, but haven’t been exposed to his old Traffic tunes, and this was truly a gem! So thanks for digging deep! Man...yeah, it “had everything but a cowbell” lol

Strong reaction. Head phones are 🔑
Been listening to this song for about 50 years and the electric piano solo gets me every damn time🤩
I agree -- this song is underrated.
Less underrated than unknown.
I would say Winwood & Traffic's most underrated of all.

Everyone I knew had it.
I remember even "hole in my shoe" got play time on the local classic rock station... very popular album in the 80's when I was growing up
Brian Hague Remember all the cool rock stations? I was in the NYC market but could sometimes pick up Philly. Not to mention College stations!
@@samanthab1923 I’m from the Left Coast and we had similar stations. Love this album so much I thought it couldn’t be played to much.
Dana Paul I know, then when Stevie came out with Valerie & Night Train 🚂 in the 80's! Like a gift from heaven 😀
Love that you love Steve Winwood! He's never gotten the love/respect he should have. Amazing career where he's constantly reinvented himself while remaining Steve Winwood.
Listening to the musicianship that was Traffic is a privilege to appreciate!

The Drummer is Jim Capaldi , also original Member of Traffic
This song is such a great showcase for his drumming, I love his groove. Underrated drummer!!
I love his 1983 solo hit "That's Love" which I believe was produced by Steve Winwood.

Between the choruses, this song bounces like a Stevie Wonder tune.
Gotta do 'Glad' and 'Freedom Rider' together from this album and also the live version of 'Medicated Goo' from Welcome to the Canteen
"Glad" is one of the best instrumental tracks in the history of rock 'n roll. No room for words, even if they came from the master Steve Winwood.
That live version of medicated goo is friggin amazing. Wholeheartedly agree with that recommendation.
