I got into the Stranglers aged just 14. I'm now 53 so have grown up with Jet Black, Jean and the team. So, they have changed the lineup just a few times but are still the Stranglers in my opinion. I never tire seeing them live.
brilliant version of down in the sewer, im not a paul roberts fan or john ellis, but roberts does a great job on vocals and ellis on guitar on this track , jj jet and dave greenfield are always going to be the deep routed stranglers sound, along with a good lead and vocals, for me hugh corrnwell done both very well, but hes gone too, and baz has done brilliant, the raw stranglers sound is back with the four members, a good balance indeed, looking forward to the 40th year tour, we are the men in black s1v
2:30 haha just brilliant...loved this song since on 'All live and all of the night' cd, Which is one of my most kept, treasured & played cd's over the last 34 years
The best Stranglers gig is always the last one, Thank you PR & JE for keeping the faith and the ball rolling, or we wouldn't have what we have just now. Long Live The Stranglers :-)
Sadly they went into the wilderness for me for a long long long time a after Hugh left - Then they released Norfolk coast and it was like - OH FUCK ME THE BAD BOYS IN BLACK ARE FINALLY BACK - and ever since - back to being a force to be reckoned with - truth told - do miss Hugh - but having said that Baz - filled the shoes pretty fecking nicely and is now the MAN - Credit to him! x x x
Why did roberts leave? i was at guilfest and they had to change to JJ all of a sudden . plus while i was there hugh did his bit, so in a strange way i watched two lots of stranglers...weird. but still great!
That singer whom The Stranglers deemed to have sing 4 them,.....YES,!!!! Now let me see, just exactly who that was that wanted 2 employ him 2 sing 4 them was it....their manager....NO ...was it....Huw Cornwell...NO.....was it.....The BBC.....NO,yet again.....so WHOOOOOO was it........YES !!---BINGO!!!!!!..........It was JJ and.......THE STRANGLERS .....That's who's fault it was ,yes it was their choice and their choice alone ---it must have been their fault !!!!
he has good voice...he is good singer...just his style is more for a band like Take That, than for classic rockers as The Stranglers!!!he looks more like a pop idol!!
@winterbourne7 Copy your comments about the Strangs....my favorite band of all time, JJ smokes, Jet made me buy a kit 25 years ago (still playing!). It's hard watching bands like Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, etc, etc, go through the line-up changes...it's not the same, seeing these old guys (I'm thinkin Wire, last tour) is downright painful. I, on the other hand, haven't aged accordingly, due to my youth serum :). It's awesome, howerver, that these archives remain to reflect, no?
The only real Stranglers members were bassist Jean Jacques Burnel, keyboards & synths Dave Greenfield (he still had hair and longer), and drummer Jet Black. I don't know who was the lead singer, which he did somewhat alright nor the guitarist, which he was alright as well, but still not the same without lead singer & guitarist Hugh Cornwell. This was in 1997, and Hugh Cornwell left The Stranglers in 1990, which he had his reasons why, but still for me it was sad that he decided to call it quits. What made this performance interesting of the song "Down In The Sewer" The Stranglers were backed up by a string orchestra which it was goth like in an old theater, the Albert Hall. Was the Queen there for this concert performance? Us old Strangler heads (many of us are baby boomers) around the world want to know.
Actually in essence you are right, La Folie and in part some of Feline was when they were still edgy and artful - after that it was too produced and commercially sounding pop with the horns - ouch (Always the Sun and North winds the only exceptions)
Then there was 3; 3 guys who in a way had been betrayed, no warning.he just left, they continued with what they know best. yes we had the wilderness years of roberts which produced some tracks but not the stranglers, then norfolk coast secured a transitional stage to better things and I think good sounding music, better than most chart shit that smears the charts... they give the fans what they want new albums old songs live.. just what the customer wants.. good on em and long may it last..
cont. The Stranglers (now) continue to release aclaimed music that is of a standard that most younger/charting groups could only wish in their wildest dreams to be able to produce. Yes it would sound better with Hugh and yes there is no substitute to Hughs voice (with the stranglers backing) singing his songs. There doesn't seem to be a chance of that happening so I am happy that every so many years can buy a stranglers album, and look on youtube what hugh is upto without buying his poor output
I have read Hugh's autobiog, I do feel he did have problems with JJ as I know he refused to call him John not JJ, (which I do not see a problemw with as thats what he had always called him) But did he have the same issues with Jet and Dave? I never seen one person as the front man as they all had such dominent offerings to the sound.. Paul Roberts (TNKFUKGONE) the love child of Iggy Pop & Michael Hutchence thought he was some pop megastar and indeed thought he was the main man.. cont..
Does any other footage of this concert exist? I think I saw more when it first came out and remember thinking that the orchestra should have let Jet lead them instead of following the conductor as they seemed out of pace with the band at times.
It’s too fast and I’m not that keen on the line up, Paul had a good voice but he wasn’t a Strangler and I think it works better with Baz on guitar....more hooked up with JJ
i listened to some of there new stuff by accident not long ago. it was hidious. but then again, i think alot of there stuff after la folie was gash, so maybe im just being a dick haha black and white period was when they where at there best
The album 'The Raven' is not too bad. There are some good songs and not too good ones. My two favorite songs on that album are "Duchess" and "Themeninblack". That song is very progressive and scary in a entertaining way. Would be interesting to make a film based on that song if done right. Well, it just might to be a bit of an off-shoot of a Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man."
Theres 2 ways in looking at this, one is the selfish way Hugh left and throught as many do that he was the stranglers and the fans would follow him on his solo career which some did, however that was short lived and he soon reverted back to a group and now plays a mixture of Stranglers/own music to small audiences and most of the time poor performances, it was him who turned his back on DG/JB&JJB...
I would agree with you on that Hugh decided to sing many songs of The Stranglers that he wrote and sing them on his solo concerts at some small night clubs backed up by a bassist and drummer, no keyboards and no synths. His voice is not what it use to like as he has become older. When he decided to go solo after he left The Stranglers, the audience wanted for him to sing Stranglers songs. He became upset with the audience that he told them, "You want to hear The Stranglers, go see them!" And my understanding when he decided to quit The Stranglers was because he just thought the creativity was just not there anymore as The Stranglers (and maybe he just might have reached a burnout stage as well.) He called up Jet Black on the phone to tell him that he was quitting the band, Jet Black's response was like, "OK." and that was the last time they spoke. Sometimes I think what would have been like if The Beatles had continued with Paul MacCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr and they would replace John Lennon with someone else and a couple of replacements during the 70s. And that Paul and Ringo would still be The Beatles with a couple of different musicians to this very day. In my personal opinion, it just would not have been right at all. Just recently The Jefferson Starship did a concert with one original member, and it was not Grace Slick, but her daughter (the father was Paul Kantner) she sang a couple of old Jefferson Airplane's songs at this concert. And they opened up for The Marshal Tucker Band with also one original member. This was at the Granada Theater in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California which the Granada Theater will be celebrating their 100 year anniversary. Still, many people went to go see both bands.
waaaa hahahahaha i was watching the video thinking how much better the lads are without John Ellis and when I saw the bit you pointed out I nearly shat meself..At least he wasnt wearing that fukn medallion he wore a lot..the twonk
No Hugh on guitar/vocals, strangled sub-Greenfield keys, a bored lookin' guitarist and an "action man" frontin' don't do it for me (to say the least). The Stranglers, to my mind, were an equal alliance of 4 quarters - it just doesn't work with 2 missing! Fine song and good to see Jet & JJ still goin' strong though.
And the show ended after he left! How would the jam sound without paul weller? The stones without mick jagger?Led zep without Robert plant? It the same diff with the stranglers Hugh cornwell was their main frontman Burnel&Greenfield gave up vocal duties a long time ago the Bass&keyboards went in to the background to 98% o their Live sets now comprises o their 1st 3~4 albums Enough said! A Tribute/cabaret act these days
Jesus people. If I had to take over from goddam Hugh Cornwall .... well I would rather take over from Freddie Mercury ..... As i"ve said before how"d zeppelin or stones fans feel about robert plant or mick jagger being replaced by new ppl?Cornwell was the main man in the stranglers no matter what way you look at it I agree his solo stuff"s garbage but he didnt just leave like a thief in the night as burnel&co have said If you read cornwells autoB a violent/near bullying relationship had developed with burnel round the time o Aural sculpture This was the reason he quit he didnt turn his back o em he"d simply enough
Now you see why Paul Weller disbanded the jam they split at the top legacy intact the stranglers oh dear a once great band reduced to this without Hugh Cornwell you ain't the stranglers
No, I won't get over the fact that The Stranglers have been a pale imitation of themselves since Hugh left. Don't get me wrong, I love the band members ...but to me they're not The Stanglers any more. Hugh was the heart and soul. Joy Division didn't find another singer when Ian died. They stayed together, but moved on. The Doors weren't the Doors after Jim died. Hugh's lyrics, sardonic wit and slightly sleazy stage presence were essential.
The Stranglers lost their way BIG TIME after Hugh left. Sort of lost it while Hugh was still with them. I suppose that's why he left. Leave the sinking ship and all that.. Worse line up ever. Baz Warne is good but since Jet stopped playing 4 years ago and only 2 originals left I stopped going to see them. Feels more like a tribute band and they sing the same old songs no new stuff because there isn't any

This is The Stranglers as it was at the time and it is a worthy version
I had never seen this before. I don’t know why, what a brilliant version.
Everyone has their own opinions , this gave me goosebumps, only wish I could of been there 👍
Dave greenefields organ playing and JJs Bass still sends a shiver down my spine though !!!.....plus like the Orchestra !!!

The music is excellent and the singer does a good job fitting the boots of mr cornwell. Preety good.

Masterful performance by everyone on that stage except PR.

No, should listen them mate.

He left the band in 1990 and then they became a 5 piece before returning to a 4 piece with just baz.
Yeah...whole production was over the top but can't help feeling like it was a made-for-Muzak deal....but dug the hotties in the orchestra!
