Wow. Only ever bought one Stranglers record... Ratgus Norvegicus. Played it almost to destruction over a long period. Still love every track on it and this one is GREAT....
Totally randomly, In 1980 Classical music, magazine called the coda to this song, the most exciting piece of classical rock music ever written. In 1980, in all of its raw live glory. It damn most certainly was. This one, is good. But just ... good.
The question is will they continue after the passing of the great Dave Greenfield. Now there's only JJ left as a founding member. I saw them live last year and they were formidable...still after all these years they were knocking the tunes out like never be before. Whatever they do it's their decision and i will respect it. I've been a fan from the very beginning and will continue to do so. If this is the end i would like to mention that Baz Warne did a great job replacing Hugh Cornwell. Long LIve The Stranglers!!
Can't see it bud... As much I would love to go and hear them one more time..It would never be the same... Think JJ more or less said that at some point...R. I. P. Dave...
I think this is now the end of the band.I hope I'm wrong.now Dave has gone there is no way anyone could replace him.if they carry on I would still pay money to go and see them but it would never be the same without Dave.such a big loss for us all.it's nearly a week now since he has passed and I'm still gutted and still very sad.RIP Dave.will never be forgotten!! 😢💔
Even if someone had the technical keyboard ability, though, the emotional side of it would just be too much, you would think. JJ and Dave must have played every Stranglers gig together for 45 years. How could JJ do another tour under those circumstances? Yes, from a fan’s point of view, we’d obviously love to come together for a final tribute, but I can’t see it, tbh. Only they can make that decision, and the fans will understand whatever they choose to do. In the meantime, we have some wonderful memories and videos like this to remind us of Dave’s wonderful skills.
Saw them in Melbourne in February and they were superb as usual. So incredibly sad about Dave. The Baz era 4 piece were much better than late Stranglers with Hugh. Imagine JJ and Baz may do something together at some point but The Stranglers as we knew and loved them are probably over.
As a MASSIVE Stranglers Fan playing drums to most of there covers LOVED playing this THE way jet done to the beat👌🥁Also walk on by jets the man R.I.P🥁🐀🖤🐀🎵🏴
Black and White. A collection of songs that exudes bleak war torn imagery and references the cold war to great effect. (U2 and Joy Division went on to create dark music with war torn overtones but the Stranglers did it first on Black and White). The production sought to capture death and destruction with a stark sneer of cold command and entrenched paranoia that existed in the late 1970's. A true masterpiece - never bettered.
We knocked this out back in 1990 in a band and my brother did the keyboards faultlessly, Rats Rally, the lot. He was 17. I still play it on guitar to this day.
Totally solid, but the best stuff is always their early material. Nobody else writes like Hugh. But this is a very faithful rendition, right down to Baz's snarl in the vocals. I saw them once with Hugh, on the Greatest hits tour with the horn section, and they were awesome. They were OK when I saw them a few years later with Paul, but it was like.... watered down. The energy, and danger were gone. Nice to see they've recaptured that. But it will never be as edgy as it was with the original line-up. A shame they seem t be at a permanent impasse- I would love to see Hugh come back, with Baz, and do a tour.
@peterdukewilson That was me, I expressed it clumsily, I actually meant that Joy Division took the sound and vive of early stranglers and explored only that path whereas the Stranglers changed direction with each outing and would move on.
I seen them when this was first was released in 1977. Brilliant! Dave wore a green jumpsuit, had a basin cut and tash, JJ had his leather jacket and tight jeans on. Jet was at the back didn't see too much of him. Don't remember the bald bloke trying to imitate Hugh Cornwell though. Who's he?
Seen a comment on another video from same concert, commenter said joy division could take it where the stranglers never could. Kinda weird that THE STRANGLERS still perform, but joy prickvision are left in the anals of despair. I rest my case.
I went in two thosend and ten to Hammersmith great night .the gig at the same venue the following year was different and better because there was no cameras and different type of gig especially when jet said he wound up the rest of the band by playing the intro to the wrong song a great night .😀😀😀😀
Yeah, love them, they don't really miss Hugh, Paul does fine & J.J. still sings some songs & dances, closing my eyes & listening....I'd say what's changed??.......))))))......Still one of best bands on EARTH.......Merci' & long live the Men in Black.....))))))
Baz Warne is SO much better than Paul Roberts, and he plays the guitar - so The Stranglers are back to a four piece. Excellent! Can't wait to see them at Leeds in March :-)
What I can't handle with the post Cornwell Stranglers is their choice of front men. First they had an escapie hair dresser now they've gone for a gurning binman. Although, I've got to admit, this does sound great.
They are getting old they need all the oxygen they can get... I do think they expect Daves synth's to more than they can, they should do one concert with their old gear
I think these guys sound good cause keyboard and bass guys stayed the same and thats their signature sound. And its a mindfuck, they dont sound good without Hugh. :)
Jet was an amazing drummer.
HERE.HERE Nro Had his own stamp WHAT a tune for a 🥁reason our jet R.I.P N DAVE🐀🖤🐀🎹🥁

Brilliant stuff - still going and still great 33 years after their first hit!
As a MASSIVE Stranglers Fan playing drums to most of there covers LOVED playing this THE way jet done to the beat👌🥁Also walk on by jets the man R.I.P🥁🐀🖤🐀🎵🏴

A pretty stunning rendition, I must say 👌
Well that was absolutely brilliant - Well done guys. Let`s see some more here in 2014.
Thee Stranglers Tune of Tunes and they have got a few good Tunes

DAVE
Baz brought back the menace the band needed, they haven't been better since '86.
Great version that...
Baz Warne is and has been doing a fantastic job for the stranglers.what a gem
Haha
@peterdukewilson That was me, I expressed it clumsily, I actually meant that Joy Division took the sound and vive of early stranglers and explored only that path whereas the Stranglers changed direction with each outing and would move on.
Cracking piece of music, I think of the input of the keyboard person with the guitarist. I think it worked well.
Absolute Classic !!! and Dave Greenefield didn't even manage to blow the keyboards up !! ....As in the Olden days !! Heh-heh-heh
I seen them when this was first was released in 1977. Brilliant!

noice bit o drummin there Mr Jet.
Jet was the founder of the Stranglers. Two missing original members and i still love these songs. No matter who's playing.
peter daigle
JJ is the only founding member left,
Dave came into the band a couple of years after they started.
Agreed
2 words...fucking brilliant
Not enough close ups of Dave Greenfield’s keyboards, especially at the end.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I miss Cornwell so much...
so do i
Yeah, love them, they don't really miss Hugh, Paul does fine & J.J. still sings some songs & dances, closing my eyes & listening....I'd say what's changed??.......))))))......Still one of best bands on EARTH.......Merci' & long live the Men in Black.....))))))
Delta GENERATOR s
Just the dogs bollocks!!
dave forever
however good the band sound now in 2022 and beyond, The Stranglers will never be The Stranglers without Hugh & Dave.
Or Jet
@TIMARCHA You can buy it for £16.99 from mamstore. I just searched "The Stranglers live at the apollo" on google.
Baz Warne has come a long way since his days of bass player with The Toy Dolls & Nelly the elephant fame, lol
Un-farking-believable...totally tight and faithful to the original. Anybody need a kidney? -I'd trade one to be there for this...
no better stranglers song
Baz Warne is SO much better than Paul Roberts, and he plays the guitar - so The Stranglers are back to a four piece. Excellent! Can't wait to see them at Leeds in March :-)
Alpha&Omega 666
Just need Jets awesome drumming slightly higher in the mix.
Not sure why the band's logo is displayed as a backdrop. Is it to remind the audience who they are watching?
I know that...
@almklit
Maybe so, but em... this great song ain't off Black and White
The last four minutes of this awesome song is very similar to some Deep Purple tracks - just without the hair and egos!
It's a bit fast
I lost my sense of smell with godamn covid
This song is heavily influenced by Thin Lizzy's "Warriors" from a year earlier in '76.
Captain Sunday
The earliest recording of this song that I am aware of is 1975, so no.
Pat Moon Yeah this song was written in 74 - 75 in its earliest form.
+Captain Sunday what drugs are you you div
+myles hughes Skip to 2:00 and it's the same type of song as Warriors. Vocals very similar. I stand corrected though apparently. My bad.
Song was written in 1975 and sounded very different on the demo.

The Stranglers is and always were Black, Burnell, Cornwell and Greenfield!
completely way off the mark.
They are getting old they need all the oxygen they can get... I do think they expect Daves synth's to more than they can, they should do one concert with their old gear
Nothing without Hugh-If I was a Russian Oligarch-my money? To make us all like Alice? Give Hugh Cornwell and his band one each
God I hate myself for saying this but....they sound better than ever before. I'm so sorry Hugh, I will always love you but.....
I think these guys sound good cause keyboard and bass guys stayed the same and thats their signature sound. And its a mindfuck, they dont sound good without Hugh. :)
@coggy52 Be honest its better than what Cornwell is doing now
Great to see Jet on drums but Baz lacks Hugh's growl and frontman status!
plus not quiet RATTUS STATUS
not like jj king of bass
my amuteur bass is embarrasing to jj
rats rally.......bass..
Dreadful keyboard sound at times
art work .....seen them when they first came out ...and hugh cornwell does it better !!1
