I remember my cousin saying 'they're your favourite band now but won't be in 5 years time. that was in 1978 and guess what they still are and always will be now
I remember using some of my paper round money to buy this record. It seemed like I was buying a new Stranglers record every week. Fantastic base line as it was for so many of their records. RIP Dave.

they were something totally out of this world, every member of The Stranglers, mastered his instrument.
johnbrown 60 He used to be until the Stranglers went soft commencing with the La Folie album in 82! Go Buddy Go was from an earlier and better period for this truly great band!
The best piece of bass playing I`ve ever seen from Burnel, or period. Chasing notes all over the frets and nailing every one of them. Nothing more to say except thank god I was drawn to The Stranglers some 40 years ago. I`ve got great musical taste, and am one lucky bastard!! x
Me too. I was at this gig. Now I'm filming Fat White Family and Black Midi for my sins. Hard to beat these guys at their peak though, and their peak was way longer than most.
@@LouSmith I've spotted the back of my head in the crowd. Battersea Park, 1978, Hugh Cornwell wearing a 'fuck the GLC' t-shirt. That's the Greater London Council who were behaving like twats about an obscenity charge against Hugh. Best extended version of Go Buddy Go ever...
Stephen Tymruk 🙌 pretty sure they picked up another one for their nice n sleazy performance. What a memorable gig eh? Speaking of nice n sleazy. In case you missed it .... lbry.tv/@LouSmithReposts:6/nice'n'sleazy:7
@@LouSmith Thanks Lou. I'll never forget that there was a fully authentic working tank onstagec at Battersea, firing what must've been a few blank salvos during "Tank". A very good friend of mine Mic West died of a heart attack just over 2 years ago on 1st April, very prematurely on his 50th birthday. The last time I saw him 6 months previously, he handed me a DVD of very shaky but perfectly watchable & audible video Super 8 footage of the entire Battersea gig. It must've been filmed by a roadie/sound crew member or sympathetic journalist, as there are some marvellous sepia tinted shots of Dave & JJ waiting in the wings to go onstage, being asked to wait a few more minutes by the stage manager while more punters flood into Battersea Park. And yes - of course as well as the rockin' renditions of "Go Buddy Go" and "Tank", the lovely girls stripping to "Nice 'n' Sleazy" was another major highlight. Haven't seen anything as sexy as that since then at a live gig, although Killing Joke came close a few years ago when they had a couple of gorgeous leather clad female fire-eaters onstage at The Brixton Academy and at The Roundhouse in Camden....
Absolute class performance again. Three cheers for Jet, sweating and hammering away in the background and keeping it all together. And the incomparable one-handed magician, Dave, who couldn't resist throwing in a bit of No More Heroes there just to freshen things up! That original line-up, back at that time, with their musical talent and attitude, were the best of the bunch by far.
carl couch Valve amp (think it was a Hiwatt) and speaker cabs that had at least one torn/damaged speaker in it. Plus a heavy string attack on Rotosound RS66 strings. JJ used say that the main part of his sound was that old Precision Bass he had but a lot of one's sound is in one's hands. He termed that sound 'The Barracuda Bass Sound'.
Sounds like the version on Live(XCERT). Brilliant. Good to see JJ and Hugh cooperating. The good old days. Dave Greenfield is the best keyboard player in rock. Period.
Andrzej Grucza I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find that Americans are fans of a band like The Stranglers. Same goes for The Jam. Both bands seem so British that I never think of them translating across the pond. Good though...... a good band is a good band.
'Nother Yank here. Saw 'em on British TV late night in summer '78. Been collecting their albums ever since. Many of my American friends got thrown by the accents, but shit happens. They're awesome. The best.
Loved Hugh's style and a quiff to equal any Teddy Bears of that era and prior. Big Paul Ferguson and Geordie Walker of Killing Joke were soon to follow.

Going to see Alice Cooper supported by (his zimmer frame) and the Stranglers in October. Can't wait to see two of my favourite bass players in action; JJ Burnel and Alice's Chuck Garrick.
As they say in the unmusical trade... They 'smashed it?' But in the real world, 'They f**king nailed AND rocked it!' How can you make that bassline and drums sound so Redding and Mitchell and Hendrix but with a prog punk punk prog way! Amazing!
R I P Dave Greenfield. We never will forget you.
Your keybboards were one of the best in the world.
Absolutely.
The Bass line drives through the centre of this song like a 100 Ton truck. Excellent.
Yes! And nice also the Hendrix/'Hey Joe' reference during the keyboard solos! 🙂
@@mightyV444 Yes, a faster version of old Noel's bass flourish. Fits in a treat.

I am going to stick my neck out and say that JJ is easily in the top 10 of great bass players....easily!!!
johnbrown 60 correct
@johnbrown 60: not sticking your neck out mate.
johnbrown 60 He used to be until the Stranglers went soft commencing with the La Folie album in 82! Go Buddy Go was from an earlier and better period for this truly great band!
yep i agree, he's another thunderfingers entwistle
johnbrown 60 I'll stick ma neck out n say he's the best bar none!!!!
man he can play that bass......and wild keyboards to....what a band.....amazing.
Pure class mate x.
RIP Dave, you were the business.
Beach Boys meets Sex Pistols
...and Hugh's guitar style is unique, maybe not the most dextrous but a very good rhythm guitarist.

This captures the excitement of those years very well.
One advantage of being a middle aged bloke is having seen 'em in their prime.

Possibly my favourite thing the Stranglers ever did.
Ok, let's speak straight: can any other band in the world sound and look so cool, perfect and groovy like original The Stranglers?
okayy - that would be nooooo.....what a modern beat combo
Not a chance
I just love the energy and synergie of the band. Great stuff!
theres no way to describe how much best this song is..
just *Masterpiece.*
JJs bass sound is awesome, the stranglers at their best
Dave is on fire here. Love how he sneaks in the solo from No More Heroes at 4:28.
At that stage the band were so dynamic. They were creature unto themselves. Something that we may never see from any band again., sadly.
Seeing as well as hearing Hugh's voice and guitar gives me goosebumps. Excuse me while this child of the 60's and 70's reminisces.
A simply outrageous classic! The tortured beginning reminds me of Chuck Berry playing with an ax in his back...Strange, punky and very cool!
Paul Hooson pmsl that sounds so right
jj burnel's bass is just monster! fantastic footage, at their best

What a bass sound!!! :-)

TheGreatToucan it is... (the live xcert one)
Yes it is Live X-cert. Still got it on tape.
I like the way the Stranglers use different styles and elements but always sound unique. This was awesome
Been listening to them for 35 plus years. They are fascinating.
My god! They really were BRILLIANT!!! And truth be known , they still are. Don’t worry Baz, you have well earned your stripes!
35 YEARS ON, I' VE HAD GREAT TIMES, WITH, THE MAGIC, THAT COMES FROM, THE STRANGLERS.
Supported by Peter Gabriel... With longer hair than other He came over and shook My hand... Great gig...
RIP Mr Greenfield
I heard this song about a year or two ago, now listen to weekly. Has it all. Also love them just going balls out live .

Awesome bass playing and he was just a young man here
Raw aggression, attitude, musicianship, menace ...... vintage 'Glers at their best!
What an amazing performance.
the happiest band in the world and best
A great band - excellent musicians = class
Cool to see other songs from Battersea and not just the famous one with the strippers!
Great song, fabulously fast version, and apart from sagging a bit in the middle, awesome. Dave's keyboards never sounded better.
Keep coming back . If anyone can top this then I'm a numpty
Feeking amazing energy 🎧💚
Go Dave..in peace brother..
Might be my favourite song ever.
I was a young punk in the late seventies and saw the stranglers and the clash Etc and they were both the best live bands at the time
goodnight London, the best punk bass player ever jjb!
Goodnight, Jet. It was an honour to have known you.
Great performance. And it’s in daytime, probably not easy for them at the time. That bass!
i was there, Battersea Park, September 78
@@melprice8961 you know it was great at the time? You must have.
Sheer brilliance !
blistering!
What a b side, wipes the floor with any young band now.
Feckin' brilliant !!
the summer of 77 I will never forget those days
One of the top 5 ,,,,,, I would say
Dave Greenfield magic keyboards.. the best!
Those were the days👌🏻💕
This is the song got me hooked.
Rock n Roll done proper...
This was when the GLC still owned Battersea Park. By the look of the fences it wasn't free entry though.
JJ may have been the eye candy and Jet just about breathing and keeping the beat, but Hugh and Dave were the real gifted talents in the original band.
No doubt
Just love the Rat dance between Hugh and JJ. Dave is just too busy tinkling those ivories! Someone wake Jet up for goodness sake!
That bass player is sick!!
just brilliant...
I had no idea the "Live X-Cert" version was filmed :)
This is amazing!
I didn't post it Mark, but agree with you 1000%- the highlight of an excellent live album.
Thirded. This day changed my life
amazing !
Legendary
CLASSIC!
Lyrics
The boys and the girls are all dancing around
Dancing all night to the crazy sound
It's the newest thing to hit this land
The boys and the girls are all holding hands
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
I'm with my friend Bob having a good time
I've got me some speed and I'm doing fine
But Bob is not dancing no sir-ee
He's got a likely eye on a little lady
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
What I say?
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
Yeah boogie now Dave...
Elbow rooming his way around the floor (oh)
You can see him he's sitting by the door (oh)
All the chickies they wanna see him dance some more
(ONE TWO THREE FOUR)
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
I see we're changing partners, but that's not for me
I notice Bob isn't joining the party
He's standing on the outside, looking in
Wishing that little chickie was with him
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
The party is over and we're all going home
I can't find Bob so I'm leaving alone
But wait a minute, who is that, I can see?
None other than Bob with that girl on his knee
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
Tell me now
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
Boogie
Yeah
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
What I said?
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
One more time
I said
Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy Go Buddy, Go Go Go
I'm going to stick my neck out and say DG was, and always will be, the best keyboard player...EVER!!!!
As far as I know, the only time The Stranglers recorded a more traditional 12 bar blues based number. They did it well!
That intro to 5 minutes live gets me every time you don't like that one you don't like music i blast it now and again top band
