- My guests today are Sarah Hader and Megan Daum, who co-host the podcast called "A Special Place in Hell". Sarah, Megan, and I talk about the difficulty of dating in New York City when you have heterodox politics.
I talk about how the death of my mother influenced my attitude toward science and alternative medicine. We talk about social contagion and gender dysphoria. We talk about Sarah Hader's origin story as an ex-Muslim. We talk about Megan's origin story as a hater of phoniness. We talk about Robin Hansen's great book, "The Elephant in the Brain", and the evolutionary logic of virtue signaling. We talk about split-brain patients, the bad incentives facing public intellectuals, lab leaks, and much more.
I really recommend you all check out their podcast called A Special Place in Hell. If you like what I'm doing here, then you're probably going to like what they're doing over there.

Dr Iain McGilchrist on left brain, right brain. A very worthy listen 👍🏻.
SO happy to hear them talk about these chronic illnesses and how certain people gravitate towards them. Social contagion in general is so fascinating.
Almost as fascinating as viral contagion.
Women and especially young girls & teens are neurotic by nature and in the modern world susceptible to whims & influence, which is why the fashion & publishing industries are particularly focused on women & girls.
We have seen the trans hysteria before. Back in the 80s & 90s it was anorexia & bulimia.
Roughly every 20 years there is a new Media hysteria and similarly there is a new female focused mental health crisis.
@@activistmalpractice😊 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
In my opinion, social contagion should be taught to everyone and be part of primary/high school curriculum to help spot and prevent things like rapid onset gender dysphoria from happening on such a large scale. Basic psychology should be taught at these mandatory levels of education.
They cannot do that. It would open the door to the possibility of average citizens figuring out how many other aspects of our “culture” are actually social contagions also.
Trump derangement syndrome
Covid derangement syndrome
Merely two recent examples (a full list would be difficult to compile)
@@stvbrsn It's ironic that these two are quick to point out the hysteria of gender dysphoria but not TDS.
LOL. Sarah and Megan are my favorite guest so far on Coleman's podcast. Love the banter and information.
So sad to hear the full story of Colemans mother. I feel deep empathy for his loss. I think most Americans can relate to frustrations with the ineffectiveness of both woo woo medicine and western medicine as well. Finding dependable healthcare in this America is so expensive and usually leads individuals to take health into their own hands if at all. It is quite a hopeless feeling.
Not gonna lie I cried hearing the story about your mom. Maybe it’s because my mom passed from cancer too. It’s why I stepped away from religion albeit I came back to it, but I definitely credit much of who I am now from that experience. Thanks for sharing
I just finished this! Great convo, a lot covered with a great personal touch. The alternative medicine quackery your mum went through as perhaps something that informs your attitudes and opinions today really resonated with me. We had the same thing happen with my brother.
This is brilliant as usual. I have been a fan of you both Coleman and Meghan, so it's doubly awesome. Thank you
Same here. This podcast is an embarrassing amount of riches for any reasonable mind.
Re the health stuff, I just read 2 articles published in 2000 written by a bioethicist called A New Way to be Mad, written across 2 articles, part 1 & part 2 and the author posits “semantic contagion” as a contributor, which gets at what your saying. People think something about their body, they discover people in the medical professions have come up with a name that the person attributes to what they think about their body and then the person adopts the name & builds their identity around it. The named condition discussed most across the articles is apotemnophilia, but he also includes anorexia and transgenderism.
This was very entertaining; please invite them back
I’m sorry for your lost, Coleman. She’s proud, bro ✊🏾
What a great conversation. This thing flowed and grooved like a fine musical piece. Each of the three playing their “instrument” of input to such a beautiful whole.
Ten minutes into this one and being so warmly amused by it. Definitely gonna go listen to these guests's show, too!
Sarah Haider is my new crush, wow. I need to check out more of her stuff.
A key artefact from her origin story: ruclips.net/video/0plC24YuoJk/видео.html
Same 😍
I love the lady on the left, such a light, no BS persona. She asks great questions too. Excellent t interview, Coleman.
This was great. Loved the variety of topics covered
Thanks for these great content you create. You are opening minds.
14:09 "You're waiting to get this woke Black dude to piss your daddy off. And then it's Coleman Hughes." - Coleman Hughes on dating
That's pretty hilarious. :)
Coleman Hughes is exactly who most decent men want their daughters coming home with! It would show that your daughter has some solid taste and would be attracting that caliber of man…
Had never heard of Sarah Haider or Meghan Daum before watching this, but I quite enjoyed this discussion and am planning to listen to some of their A Special Place in Hell podcast.
What do others who know them think about them, both positive thoughts and negative thoughts?
Their podcast is excellent. They work very hard to have nuanced discussions that avoid the extremism of both left and right.
This was hilarious to watch. "Oh I'm doing my thesis on racism and capitalism"
Coleman: Oh God 😅
If you ever hear that from someone, your run away from them very fast. Imagine they have a highly contagious disease.
It's basically saying you are writing a thesis that's just a series of academic buzzwords strung together.
There are audio issues towards the end 1:49:00 Some overlaying of voices that shouldn't be there.
Yeah, it was definitely very distracting. Maybe in the long term it can be edited out.
@@michaeltorrisi7289 Yeah. We wanna see the haircut!
Awesome convo, the three of them have great chemistry. Coleman should join A Special Place in Hell permanently
1:48:22 Something went very wrong with the audio. There'd been a lot of echo, and then it seemed that other channels were mixed in. Who said "shag adjacent" and why?
Coleman's Mom brought up a wonderful, free-thinking son. May she rest in peace.
Great to hear the discussion of anthropology’s possibilities, led by Sarah 🙏🙏🙏
The concept of explaining stuff to an alien being funny is why TV shows like Mork and Mindy, and Third Rock where so successful in the 80s.😂😂😂
Lol. I never had a piano key scarf (too tacky) but I was the kid who taught himself to play “Angry Young Man” on the piano in my high school choir studio. This was in 1985 or so.
Given the topic of placebo/nocebo effect, Coleman should invite David Robson on, he wrote The Expectation Effect . Chris Williamson had a great conversation with him .
my problem with online tests for autism, gender dysphoria, ocd, adhd etc. is theyre self reported. so youre going to answer more in a way that gets you the answer you want. you will think of the time when you avoided eye contact bc you were shy (kind of normal) if you want the autism result.
1:48:57 FYI it seems like someone cut Colemans mic and turned on their own as there's some background convo going on
I think Coleman should have on Dr. Steven Novella, who is part of the Skeptic Guide to the Universe podcast (and book). It would be interesting because Dr. Novella is a skeptic but is sometimes woke. These two things are in conflict and would make for an exciting interview.
Awesome and thoroughly interesting convo…just a heads up that towards the last 6 minutes there is some audio issues and overlap from another portion of the conversation. Not sure if you may want to re upload a corrected version!
Absolutely Bloody Fascinating!! Loved This! ThankU guys So Much! Loads Luv n Support from The UK! 🌈❤️🌞🌞
Oh my gosh I have the answer! The trombone actually did exist in medieval and Renaissance times! It was popular because it was one of the few wind instruments you could easily play in any key & play chromatic notes. Apparently in medieval church towers the trombonists played tunes of whatever time of day it was- (maybe before bells were popular) It was not popular in baroque and classical times so much. I’m thinking it had a lot to do with culture of courtly musicians/composers in Europe & the fact that a lot of music was played indoors (for noble people anyway) and it was not considered an indoor instrument at the time.
There was a crossover for me in two topics they discussed. First the psychosomatic illnesses and second trans. He said it doesn't matter what the data shows, if light therapy makes the pain go away, you're going to do it. I doubt many of us know ourselves well, even if we think we do. So I question the narrative in my own head. What I do know is, transitioning makes the pain go away, so I'm going to keep doing it. I've tried other methods. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy works on my chronic illness, but not on this.
If you want to see hate, just look at the commenters who are soon to follow. 😅
@@emalee8366 You think you're going to get hate for this comment? I hope not! I'm glad you've found a way to reduce your pain.
We might not agree on some things, but that's normal!
@@peterford5408 This is RUclips, and Coleman attracts a mix of people including conservatives. I'm used to getting hate on YT. It's normal. If not from conservatives than from homosexuals. Trans and homosexual communities have strained relationships in some circles. In my day to day life, I just wanna stealth. I don't want anyone to know. I don't want to be celebrated. I want 0 special attention drawn to me. I don't want to be asked for my pronouns, especially if I'm the only person being asked. It's just frustrating.
@@emalee8366 Yes, I would expect to see some conservatives here, given that Coleman has a friend who used to have a Reagan photo in his dorm room 😂 (12:30)
I would hope they'll (at least mostly) be reasonable in their comments.
I can empathize with you wanting not to draw attention. I guess it must be frustrating for all these issues to be generating so much controversy and airtime.
I'm definitely a conservative and I do have some thoughts/ feelings about what you shared, but none of them involve hatred. The internet so often creates the illusion that the worst of us make up a much larger proportion of any group than they do in reality.
Awesome, this was a different style than normal. Very casual and less rigorous, but very fun and entertaining. If this was a regular collaboration, I wouldn't complain. Coleman After Hours...let's get a trombone solo interlude on the next one. :)
Good suggestion 😊
This was a fun conversation. I really enjoyed it.
I won't date someone who doesn't have the same moral beliefs and similar political ideology as myself. There would be constant conflict.
I wish there were easier to find people like you guys in real life. It's impossible.
crossover of the year so far!
great convo, i was pleasantly surprised, last I remember of M. Daum is she was a bit of a man hating lefty....but interesting. What happened with the sound in the end? you guys picked up another conversation, someone talking about a haircut
Wow! Obama "has no air of condescension"?! First time I've found your perspective woefully disconnected from reality, man. But I suppose no one can agree on 100% of everything. Love your show-keep 'em coming!
Fan of both podcasts for some time...
It's nice to see voices embodied... And get the added expression offered this way.
Interestingly, I also found everyone a bit deflated in this presentation.
TLDR: Background was too prominent, and everyone seemed somewhat uncomfortable in their seating and orientation towards each other.
Partly, I think it's Coleman's current studio setup and background.
I've been watching his assorted videos for a while, but I feel both Zoom-like and stage-type formats were less distracting and more flattering.
Maybe just version 1.0 rough edges.
It drives home how difficult the studio type video can be. The "cross a table" format seems easier for traditional media as well. The mic booms and background seemed unfortunately visually prominent here.
Not perfect, but ...
Yang's Forward podcast has comfortable seating, no table, but has conversants positioned more across, and used low mount mic booms and backgrounds that are slightly less prominent through some combo of composition, focus, and lighting. Bill Maher's Club Random also creates a great relaxed setting, but does it with mega$ and multiple intoxicants 😅!
Anyway still a great group and conversation!
What happened with the audio toward the end?
01:23:02
"Academics act like they are important, but when something is academic it is meaningless. People say, 'It's academic, now let's get work done."
Evan Sayet
Cat ,heard some of your jazz playing ,doing songs like Ugetzu , Tin tin deo , Two Bass Hit . Cool !
Keep up your great podcast
Coleman is soooo smart and sensitive. Really enjoyed the women also.
I recently discovered Coleman and was excited. But once you ventured into a science you don't understand, I lost confidence. I have fibromyalgia. It started in childhood in Africa. Only diagnosed 40 years later. So much pain, to hear you three speculate was disheartening.
Didn't they just speculate that some of this stuff could be psychologically influenced, while emphasising that this wouldn't make it not real? I don't remember but I thought that was the whole point of bringing it up in the conversation?
And of course, it would say very little about any particular individual. Did they say anything that would rule out the possiblity that, your problems for example, were 100% physical?
Who are the women talking about a shag haircut toward the end of the video?
148:55
I think a tech forgot to turn off the studio mic during post production.
Deconstructionists always seem so proud of themselves! They're like Crossfitters.
Btw the trombone (i.e sackbut ) was used in baroque music. The trumpet was first and the trombone came later.
Thanks!
I always enjoy Coleman’s podcasts however I found it interesting that after talking about social contagions they categorized themselves and a bunch of others as “autistic” seemingly without making the connection at all. Anything that has a range is a spectrum but it doesn’t mean everyone is on every spectrum. Sexuality is a spectrum that everyone is on including asexuals but the autism spectrum includes only those with autism not anyone who exhibits one or some of the behaviors on a checklist.
We had a saying for when you were a waiter in a restaurant at lunch and 7 tables, all who did not know each other, all ordered the same bottle of white wine (or a red, not a dish). We only stocked 6 chilled as it was not a favourite just a middle, not the cheapest, not the most expensive or advertised.
Morphic Resonance.
We sometimes questioned if it was the same thing that happened when you hummed a tube, not a most played top 100, on the way to your car and 3 minutes later it played on the radio.??
Please solve this 😂
Jfc. I think she said "heterodox" like a dozen times in the first 10 minutes... reminded me of a toddler who learned a new word
Interesting conversation, but please timestamp the episodes!
Wait sarah is married?? Damnit..
I had the same reaction. Like a knife to the heart.
@@benp4877 Yes - with a couple of kids (sorry to twist the knife in even further).

Cracking convo!
“Virtue signaling is bad! Also, I’m autistic!”
“I thought you told me last episode you weren’t autistic!”
“Oh no, I’m autistic, but I’m highly functioning autistic!”
Sarah's hair is lovely !
Edgelordified is my new favourite word.
Obviously, Coleman is the interviewer here. He's in the "Here's Johnny Seat", while Meghan and Sarah are on "The Couch". They even placed themselves far apart as if they came on separately.
But seriously, folks, I loved this. I came to heterodoxy late in life, and I realize that it has it's own type of virtue signaling, but, you gotta start somewhere, and critical thinkers like these ... you could do a lot worse.
I read about split brain procedure in a book back in 2003/2004 and cant remember whoch book, it had 2 other major disorders as well.
“Poor people have plenty of time to have many kids.” I strongly question this. A poor person typically cannot afford to live close to their home, and this they often have long commute times, up to an hour. They may work two jobs as well, leaving very little time for themselves during the week.
I LOVE Yr Music!❤️❤️
As a person who have had people they know injured by certain... Current medical mandates western medicine ain't what it's cracked up to be either. I think it's important to find a Dr that understands that there is a difference between their pet theories and being flexible in functional modalities.
Maybe what happened on Coleman's date with the "can't date a man who thinks racism doesn't exist" woman, was a set-up. She found he was in the band and told him she was a fan, pretending "to have no idea" !
Famous quote "pain is a more terrible Lord of mankind than death itself 😮
The part about alternative medicine made me think of a famous Canadian doctor who teaches about the impact of trauma on the body. It seems like he’s universally loved so I checked him out but had mixed feelings about his claims. He said he reads obituaries and notices women who died of cancer were usually described as giving or selfless which he attributed to manifesting the illness in their bodies. This didn’t sit well with me..
I would love to hear more balanced conversations about mind-body medicine!
You're referring to Dr Gabor Mate. Your summary of his work is so spare as to be useless. If you read his books, he cites plenty of research to back up his claims. There's plenty of research out there, but most Doctors don't acknowledge (or ignore) it because it challenges their medical worldview.
The Mate's lost credibility with their position on Hamas and Palestinian special kind of resistance. Zero understanding of the region, Islamism, Arab honour shame culture, the nazi, KGB history of Palestinians, but using their personal Jewish holocaust history.
All I heard was that "daddies love Coleman Hughes".
Having traits of ASD is not the same as being actually having that dx any more than being anxious or sad is the same as having a clinical dc of either. Brains can have traits…. They can work differently that doesn’t make you a person with autism
Perfectly said - traits are endearing, profound developmental delays and disorders not so much
Adquate sleep is extremely important for your health and essential for so many bodily processes. Most people need 7-8. Get more sleep, Coleman!
Key word “most”
I do pretty well on 6. Some nights I’ll (not intentionally) do biphasic, where I sleep 3-4 hours, wake up for 1-2 and then sleep 3. But 7-8 straight through is very rarely in the cards for me.
Sorry... Butttttt - snorting right when the conversation was getting started @4:36 was a real turn off!! I feel the same about people who sniffle. Please pod-casters, control your bodily functions when performing to the public. This is why the professionals were so much better at bringing us the news. Surely there's a training school and if not, can someone start one please ... And this would include not broadcasting from bedrooms - I see that so much!!
Needless to say, I switched off at 4:38, after rewinding twice to make sure I heard right and yes it would have been difficult to cut it!! 🙄
I really liked this.
To the question of whether being a female podcaster is hot, it is when the female podcasters are hot, as in this case.
I love that Hic-hup music !
Some serious sound issues the last 5/10 minutes.

Well, it was that woman's loss, Coleman.
Hey! Christianity and belief in God is very rational. YOU must still have vast faith to be an atheist.
Not rational....
While it is nice to see that some people recognize the bounds of thier ignorance of those outside their bubble.
to wit, these 3 coastal elites recognizing thier complete disconnection from anyone in the lower 2/3 of the economic scale.
The disheartening bit is how much disdain they still have for that same group of people.
GET ROBIN HANSON ON THE POD!
What do you call an Atheist who hates injustice ?
Oh for an "Old Fashioned School

If people want to learn about the actual relationship between the brain hemispheres I’m just gonna autistically namedrop Iain McGilchrist.
1:50:58 Like Sarah, Obama appealed to me because he was a third-culture kid like me. I also thought that the fact that he was half black and half white would make him relatable to most Americans. I didn't vote for him and didn't agree with most of the policies he implemented.
I feel sorry for the kinds of people you have dinner with. So reactionary. You can’t say “gain of function”, so you can’t have clarifying debate. Ugh. So much fear in the space.
this lighting is criminal
Bro , I'm so glad you're a podcaster stay dangerous !
1:45:07 I think mixed race people identifying with only one race from their mixed background is part of the problem too especially if that race has a victim identity. It seems only white or European looking mixed race people identify themselves as mixed race more than those who look non white. Also I find it odd that Americans refer Puerto Rican, Hispanic, Latin & Spanish as non white racial identities.
1:47:01 Not true coz many Indians in India look no different than her. May be since she's so publicly perceived as African American for so many years that makes it easier for people to think of her as African American more than Indian American while her sister hasn't had much of a public profile & lacks the same perception of being African American as much as her.
The Sound messed up at the end ~1:48
Sarah Haider ❤.
As a Marxist I would have thought she would be a fan of science
Woke is a stolen word...interesting podcast
Allopathic medicine and homeopathy can both work in fact a good doctor uses both ..improving the body and it's functions is just as important as giving medication and performing surgery. So sorry to hear about your mum,. I lost mine too due to the medical industry...
This podcast is hard to watch in the best way. Thank you Coleman. Amazing.
Studies have shown you need at least 7 hours of sleep.
The long term effects are researched and noted.
Sleep is an essential function
and helps the immune system and brain function work properly.
This conversation is just full of inaccuracies and plain untruths.
Not only that, the TIME you go to sleep is vital. It's best to sleep before 11:00pm. So even if you sleep 1am to 8am. It's not the same quality and doesn't have the same effect as 10:30pm - 6:30am.
Just my 2 cents But imo in Any Election That’s 2 Party Only (Same here in UK) U can Only Vote The Lesser of 2 Evils!🥴😵💫
So Coleman wanted his mum to have rational medical attention but sent his mum to a chiropractor? Coleman, look into this! It's mostly quackery.
There are different levels of quackery.
