    • @catinabox3048
      @catinabox3048 Месяц назад +2

      No, not universal. As a northern Chinese, the only thing on that list that my family ever has around is eggs. I actually don't know a single person growing up who has mustard or cheese around, like ever. Things containing those things are restaurant treats that you just don't eat or make at home. Pickles are a once in a while type of thing and pickled mustard greens and sauerkraut are probably way more popular, and even those things most people don't keep at home constantly. My region doesn't really do spicy foods so hot sauce was a non-presence at home, though they're probably easily available for those who do like it.

      @dellytancyl524 Месяц назад +2

      @@catinabox3048 okay, I can understand not having any mustard around, but pickles is a broad term used for preserved foods. you're telling me that Northern Chinese don't preserve any kind of foods at all? The number of people who just shove their whole pot with leftovers into the fridge rather than putting it in a container is mindboggling. On the other hand, I feel relieved I am not the only condiment addict in the world that is comforting.

    • @jayolovitt5969
      @jayolovitt5969 Месяц назад +12

      I try not to do that because it takes up a lot of space but sometimes I think it’s better because then the food is sitting in a metal container not a plastic one (I worry about leeching chemicals and don’t have enough glass ones yet).

    • @Not-Right-Meow
      @Not-Right-Meow Месяц назад +25

      As someone who works full-time and lives in a household of two, I feel like transferring from the pot to container(s) just to have to wash both the pot and the container(s) is just more extra work than I'd like to do on a busy day and I try not to keep more food than two people can reasonably consume before it goes bad so space typically isn't an issue. Plus depending on what's in the pot I sometimes prefer reheating it in the same pot over the stove rather than portioning out to another container to microwave it.

    • @potocatepetl

      If you are interested: it is actually super simple. You just need a scoby to start with. Then you feed it tea and sugar

    • @marylynroten
      @marylynroten Месяц назад +6

      Thank you so much! ☺️❤️
      It is indeed very easy, once you get your hands on a scoby. My recipe for kombucha is the following:
      Ingrediënts:
      - 0.8 l of spring water
      - tablespoon organic green/black tea
      - 40 g sugar
      - 0.2 l of starter + scoby
      Method:
      - Boil the 0.8 l of water on the stovetop on medium-high with 1 tbsp of tea leaves and 40 g of sugar for 10 minutes
      - pour the liquid in a bowl with a sieve on top to sieve out the tea leaves
      - let the liquid cool down completely
      - pour your cooled tea together with the starter liquid and the scoby in a big sterilised jar.
      - Let the jar ferment for 10 days - 3 weeks. Then you can harvest your kombucha, but make sure to reserve some liquid and you scoby to start a new kombucha (about 1/5 of the total volume)
      -> this is the first fermentation.
      You can also do a second fermentation if you add fruits to the harvested kombucha liquid (no scoby in here) and let it sit for another 2 days. This makes it less acidic and more flavourful :)

    As a US ex-pat living in Germany for almost 30 years my Fridge has transformed into a mostly German/European Fridge. (Yes, my delicious and incomparable German bread lives the the Fridge.) As you've seen in this video the contents include a lot of foods and flavors not traditionally German. I love mustard, so I have several (too many probably) jars of them. I even have a jar of French's US mustard. Not because it is better than the others - it's just because. My biggest struggle to satisfy here is one of my last US taste yearnings - Pastrami. What I find here (always a chance find) just doesn't hit the spot. Europe has many wonderful cured meats. I recently learned that Pastrami may have originated in Romania. So, there still may be hope. BTW, I loved this video.

      @@TheFonzieCommunityWell, maybe take your own advice and be open to trying new things and taste profiles as well! 😉
      European food is not bland at all, it just concentrates more on the natural flavours of the produce and other basic ingedients, instead of relying on condiments to add flavour.
      No need to add spice or msg to everything, although I like it from time to time. 😉
      No offense though!

      @@nozee77 I am a open minded eater, and I’ve eaten a lot of y’all European food; but it’s been a while since I’ve eaten it. Regardless, most things are generally bland; but there has been some food i remember tasting in Germany that was flavorful. If you know the couple of uyen, a Vietnamese German couple; I’m uyen most of the time. Also since I can’t go to Europe all the time, and or haven’t even duel citizenship with one of y’all’s countries that includes the uk; I have to work with equivalents here in the states. As far as the British are concerned as a example, some agree that they’re food is at times bland compared to the states food.

      @@TheFonzieCommunityas a duel British/German living in the UK that "bland" food reputation for British and some other European countries comes from American soldiers during and post the second world war when rationing was very much in effect. Heck rationing was still in effect till 1954!
      Please remember that after this the UK opened its doors to the commonwealth and people from the Carribbean, Indian sub continent, Hong Kong etc started coming to the UK as they were BRITISH. Foods like Balti, tikka masala etc are British foods not found in India!
      We have multiple cities with china towns, most towns have Asian supermarkets. Since the 00's we've had "eastern Europe" stores and all supermarkets have international sections.
      Even old school typical British food like cottage/shepherds pie isn't bland if it's made right! It should contain worcestershire sauce and seasoning, if food is bland it's not been seasoned and that's a bad cook not bad food. Most people nowadays are more likely to be eating pasta than a British Sunday roast. Preferred "going out" food is Japanese, Korean, Italian, heck even nandos is an institution nowadays! Peri peri is far from bland!
      Yes we don't do mexican well, Europe in general doesn't, we're too far to have the good influence and a basic burrito or taco is pretty much all you will find but we have Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi cuisine that is EVERYWHERE here that barely exists in north America, so it's swings and roundabouts as far as I'm concerned.
      Most European countries that aren't well known for their food generally have at least one other country that influences food in their country, German with Turkish food, Dutch with Indonesia. You might have tried the stereotypes but today's European food is heavily influenced by its neighbours, former colonies and because it's the 21st century, everywhere else in the world!

    A _lot_ of hot sauces are okay to leave out of the fridge. There's nothing in them that will go bad at room temperature. I never bother to put my Tabasco or El Yucateco in the fridge, for example, and I don't bother putting my Cholula in the fridge. There's too much acid and salt in most of them, and capsaicin itself is antimicrobial. The biggest exceptions are Sriracha and Crystal's. YMMV, proceed at your own risk, but when you have fridge space at a premium like I do and go through hot sauce fairly quickly, it's helpful.

Right now we have 5 kinds of hot sauce, 3 kinds of salsa, 5 kinds of mustard, 10 different cheeses, 7 different salad dressings, olives, a variety of fermented foods (plain yogurt, kimchi, pickles, and sauerkraut), eggs, bacon, hummus, and veggies that are in season from a local farm stand. The produce changes but we always have the wide array of condiments, yogurt, pickles, eggs, cheese, and leftovers.

Currently, in my fridge I have very little: aside from the cream cheese, I have some kimchi, a lemon, some Kerrygold butter, feta with Mediterranean herbs, yogurt, a ribeye steak, gluten free cookie dough, and some shredded cheese, and some undereye patches. In my freezer I have some frozen shrimp, frozen acai, and cookie ice cream sandwiches. I am in desperate need of getting some more produce!!

    such a cool episode that i have to comment. because of this channel something i now always need to have inside my fridge is those homemade garlic pickles that turn blue. as a portuguese i laughed when i saw the south african fridge. also have chouriço in my fridge. got soy chouriço that even a vegetarian can enjoy. it's still portuguese chouriço but veggie friendly. :D
    also tell the young lady who's keeping the nail polish in the fridge that once outside the bottle, like when you're painting your nails, a bit of cold air (a fan for instance) can help traditional nail polish dry faster. that's the trick i used when i wore nail polish to get it to dry faster when the weather was very hot. so she should try with just one nail polish inside the fridge and get the others out. if it dries at least she saves the others from drying.
    speaking of a non edible (not edible anymore) that it's still in my fridge it is a small jar of homemade pepper oil my mum used in her cooking all the time. as i didn't know much about cooking when she passed away, i never used it but also never got rid of it because it was mum's secret ingredient. it's also the oldest item in my fridge cause it as been there since 2006 at least... also liked to see that there other people out there keeping a special old jar in their fridge because it's really special. don't feel weird anymore for keeping the oil. ;)
    also i support the comments that say "a pantry tour, please!" :D
