The 80s recession was something you had to have lived through, in fact, the 80s entire were a pretty bleak time for most people. Schools and hospitals bulldozed, our industries broken up, two mile dole queues. The Tories thought hiding the problem would look better and be cheaper than dealing with it, so they closed the labour exchanges and built spakly Job Centres like MacDonalds, creating an illusion of job availability. Most of the cards inside were for low paid jobs 300 miles away. Bad days.

Like all labour voters you have no idea what you are talking about. The closure of the labour exchanges and the creation of the Job Centre program was a Labour project that began under the Wilson government. Unless you're referring to the modern job centre (which wouldn't fit with half of what you say) in which case that was done under the B. Liar government.

Risk and destructive practises are not intrinsically linked, many hedge-fund companies and other contributors to the recession that were only allowed to exist through deregulation, did not suffer once the slump hit.

..and if you don't know how good recessions are at pulling young people into the military, you really aren't taking note of facts at all. As much as I'm sure you'd love to believe they're all cap-touching, obedient young men who stand up for the national anthem, you'll find most who joined in the terrible years of Thatcherism did so because there was bugger all else. The mindset, such as it existed, was instilled afterwards.

@MrMickroach No, the Tories abandoned the hated Poll Tax since the sight of angry working class people on the streeet scared them shitless. They changed it to the Council Tax. One way or another, they had to pay for the service sell-offs, where once there were self-financing services, there were shareholders with greedy hands outstretched. The old affordable rates didn't cover it, so she had to come up with something to pull in the cash. Council tax is a TORY concoction. As you well know.

Deregulation is a hugely vague term, it can mean ending protectionist policies that limit trade, or it can mean cutting fiscally responsible rules that prevent dangerous lending rates. It was the latter that contributed towards the recession, if you believe all deregulation is good you are very foolish indeed.

MrToryTom, Britain is already coming out of this recession - thanks to Brown and public spending, we've experienced a seemingly mild, 1 and a half year recession. I can guarantee that under Cameron, it would've been much worse. It's simple economics - the economy relies on the majority, that is, the working class, for spending, which is why it was vital Brown helped secure poorer families. Cameron would've simply pretty much cut public spending so much we'd go back to 6 hour hospital queues

@MrMickroach Ah well, in '80, you see, the mad cow had closed the pits and shut down the factories. So they joined up cos there was bugger-all else round here. That's in the real world, like. Not the officer's mess.
As for carrying on like a capitlaist, nah. We got by, and we enjoyed running our little shop. The kind of shop that went in the Thatcher era, the one in every street. Ousted by her friends, the corporations. So much for fair competition.

@MrMickroach It was always expected that I would take over our family business, which I was employed in, so no, I haven't joined the forces. I know a hell of a lot of lads who did though, and don't run away with the idea they're all Thatcher lovers. Far from it. A few might've liked the pay rise she immediately dealt out while everything else was cut, and been attracted into the Army or Navy in the first place by them, which was no doubt the intention. But they kept their heads screwed on.
