Great hike, Jason, and a fantastic video. Loved it! That second day you put in was one for the ages - epic! I am so glad I was able to enjoy the rest of the hike we had planned, and do it from the comfort of my barco-lounger! I was getting winded just watching you, and my knees and feet hurt somehow. Those 'trails' on Saddleback and Basin were giving me the 'heebie-jeebies' just watching them on the big screen - because having experienced that descent off of The Gothics I could just about feel what it must have been like. I also have to say I loved watching all of your references to hiking back to our cars at the Adirondack LOJ... knowing that the cars weren't there! (sorry, man!). I was wondering when you would figure it out... and what your reaction would be. Knowing the excitement you feel to 'finish' a hike like that I can imagine it was a bit crushing to know there was still two more miles to go (at least it was a quick, road walk). Thank you for creating a great video that let me enjoy the part of our hike that I couldn't get to. Well done, Jason.
Thanks so much David, glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking when I thought I came out at the right parking area, lol! It was a great adventure and glad you were able to be part of it with us. I'm looking forward to the time that I can finally hike out West and I think I know guy who can give me some great advice! Thanks for watching and for the kind/encouraging words.
I did that with a group of 14-16 year old boys. Pristine day. Gothics, Saddleback=- down those cliffs- the chasm between Saddleback and Basin is enormous, Basin, finally Haystack, then 10 miles down Phelps trail to Garden parking lot. I will be eternally grateful to experience the upper great range and especially climbing Haystack. I did not find the cliffs-cables on Gothics as intimidating as I had imagined. I actually did not use them that much.
that place was incredible and I hope to go back again someday for more. Yeah, the cables weren't really that necessary unles it was raining or icey....I mainly just used them for the video footage haha. I don't remember the Phelps trail, I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
@@jasonwish- You approached Marcy, I think, from 4 corners, which is always how I climbed it through Avalanche Lake, Lake Colden to Lake Tear. You came down the Van Hoevenberg trail, which mostly is not that interesting, but crosses the beautiful Indian Falls with the incredible view of the Macintyre range. The Phelps trail is a main route off the great range that takes you directly to John's Brook Lodge and then the Garden parking lot. We picked it up off of Haystack and it was 10 straight miles of rather easy walking I have seen a lot of high peaks videos. Yours is outstanding and one of the best. Currently watching this in my camper outside of Lake Placid. Love the High Peaks even though they are difficult. BTW, I’ve found after a while it’s just easier to pack the trekking poles away, they become a hinderance and are useless. Also that spot you thought would make a great spot near Marcy there's no camping allowed. It's above the acceptable elevation
I figured that was an illegal camping spot and thought about editing that out, but it looked so darn inviting, lol. I still feel like the poles were very helpful for me and would have fallen many times without them, but that could be that I go quicker than I probably should and really rely on them as a third leg. What campgrounds do you recommend near lake placid, I want to take my wife camping there?
@@jasonwish- You should check out the Adirondack Mountain Club. They have camping where you commented about the Hungry Hiker. Also the NY state camp site at Wilmington Notch has primitive car/camper camping. No electric or water but showers and flush toilets.
Jason Wish - Wishwell Farms we stay at the North Pole Resorts in Wilmington. It's 8 miles east of Lake Placid. If you book, make sure you stay in the 100 acre woods side and not the resort side. The resort side the sites are right next to each other, the 100 acres are spread out. They also have cabins, camper rentals, and a motel. There's a trail in the campground that leads to the trail up Whiteface. You can hike up Whiteface, then have family that doesn't want to hike drive to the top and meet you, then drive you back down.
This looks like a heck of a hike. Any suggested summit hikes to try for my first Adirondack weekend? In shape part time hiker. I’m 50 and my brother is 39. Thanks
Hey Jack, we are the same age...I would highly recommend summiting Mt. Marcy, it was the best and it's not even as hard as several of the others that we did. It's been several years since I was there so my memory of all the of the peaks is a little foggy. I think Gothics was really cool with the cables too.
What an awesome part 2 to this epic trip, Jason!!! I truly understand now why you said in your trailer video that this was the hardest hiking you’ve ever done- this video showed that so well! I felt the exact same way when I was attempting to YO-YO the Birch Knob section of the Pine Mtn Trail in SE Ky- I got overwhelmed by the constant scrambling and climbing and 30mph winds on the ridges and had to call for family to pick me up at the other end when I finished the section. Highly recommend that and the Highlands Section if you want a similar challenge in Ky wilderness. So bummed your hiking partners couldn’t finish with you, but many congratulations on finishing! Quite the accomplishment. Hope you’re doing well!
I am checking out this place you speak of right now, sounds pretty awesome! I appreciate the kind words Samuel. My wife and I are currently planning a few fall trips with one of them being the blue ridge parkway, can't wait! Started watching your vacation vid in Oregon last night, looked like a fun time. Take care!
Awesome video. I see what you mean about the terrain. Glad you were able to summit Mt. Marcy. It's funny you mentioned Cloud Splitter and Indian Staircase. I was there last weekend.
That's so funny that you were just there! One of the main differences was that none of the rock in the dacks had any sand on it...very grippy for the most part, and I remember parts of Indian Staircase having a little sand on it in spots which definitely can add to the sketchy factor, thanks Tyler, glad you enjoyed it, and hope you had a great time at RRG.
i see ya mentioned what would make a great camping location coming off Marcy. you must camp in designated sites. i believe Indian Falls is the last camping location going up Marcy. i believe you must be something like 250 ft off trail and away from water source unless otherwised marked. dont believe there is any primitive sites above the 4000ft elevation in the ADK High peaks. please correct me if information is inaccurate. when i started hiking in the high peaks in the 90s marcy dam was actuality a dam. the upstream of it was a beautiful small pool it always had water.
Yeah I know you are correct, it was my first time in the Adirondacks and some of those rules were all new to me coming from an area where there is dispersed camping just about anywhere you choose. Interesting about the dam, thanks for sharing.
That grassy patch on the way down Marcy is not a legal campsite since it's above 4000 feet. I believe that many years ago it was the site of a lean-to that was removed when the regulations changed.
I don’t believe anybody posted it publicly but Jeremy from all things outdoors designed the route and I have the GPX files. You could either reach out to him directly or send me your email and I can get a hold of him for you or email you the GPX file. It’s a great route, but I sure wish we could’ve completed the entire loop to see the beautiful lake Colden.
We started at a TH called Klondike Notch a few miles from the LOJ, but I would recommend starting at the LOJ near Heart Lake and end there as well. I would take the Mr. Van ski trail to Wolf Jaw shelter. On day two I took the ADK Ridge trail to all the high peaks, wolf jaw, armstrong, gothics, basin, haystack, marcy and then back to the LOJ. Our original plans continued on from marcy to sky light/elk lake trail junction to the mt marcy trail all the way to lake Colden. I really wanted to go there... lots of leanto shelters near the lake and Opalescent River. Take Avalanche pass trail back to LOJ. hope that helps!
@@Journeysofdad take trekking poles, don't take a pet, have a good navigation app like Gaia or All Trails or Hiking Project, and plan on only going about 1 mph when going up and down the mountains. We overestimated the distance we could travel in two nights/three days and thats why we didn't finish our intended loop down to Lake Colden. And double check about using the ski trail....I seem to remember that hikers aren't allowed to use them...in that case I would start at Klondike Notch.
@@jasonwish- awesome thanks for the tips. I found a decent loop route passing lake Colden and yes I did learn the ski trail is not for hikers. So I found a decent alternate in the beginning by Klondike knotch. I appreciate the guidance and I will absolutely remember, most importantly, dont over estimate the terrain. Looking forward to more videos. 🍻cheers.

It's Good in the Woods yeah buddy, It’s finally here! It only took me two months LOL 😂
Has anyone posted the itinerary? I live relatively close and would love to do this route, looks great.
Hey Jason. What was your exact route. Im planning a high peaks loop and this one looked amazing, challenging and extremely worth it.
@@jasonwish- yes that helps a lot. Thank you and in looking forward to the adventure.
@@jasonwish- any tips or tricks for the trekk?
🍻cheers.
Love the enthusiasm, bro. But it's just Gothics. Not, "The Gothics."
Yeah I know, not sure why I forgot that during the hike. Thanks!
@@jasonwish- you’re good, bro. I’m just bustin your balls 😂
I’m glad you got to experience the daks! Very special place
