- The numbers associated with human sex trafficking are staggering, but the lives of victims and survivors are what stay with us. In this talk, Kanani Titchen M.D. reveals her experiences as a physician whose interactions with trafficked patients opened her eyes to a parallel world previously unseen.
Kanani Titchen MD, is an Adolescent Medicine fellow at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Bronx, New York. She encountered human sex trafficking for the first time during a gynecologic rotation while in medical school at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Kanani served as the 2013-2014 President of the American Medical Women’s Association National Resident Division. During her tenure as President, she trained with Girls’ Educational & Mentoring Services in New York City and created an online video tutorial to educate doctors about human sex trafficking.
She has authored numerous articles for medical journals and for the lay press about US child sex trafficking and physician education, and she has advocated for sex trafficking survivors at the United Nations and at the US Department of Health and Human Services.

When she said 15 year olds are more likely to be trafficked it made really sad. I once went with my dad to visit his lawyer friend at the police station and there were dozens of missing people posters. I noticed most were girls, 15 years old and about the same height. My father's friend brushed it off and said in most cases girls run away from home to be with their boyfriends, as if that implied they were safe somewhere. Now I can see they were victims of human trafficking...all dozen of them, and everyone brushed it off.

I hate the "she just ran off to be with some boy" excuse. As if that implies that they're not in danger? If he was a good guy to be around, she wouldn't have had to run away from home to be with him!

When your dad's friend said "their boyfriends", he meant their pimps. And they don't just run away. They get brainwashed or straight up taken by these assholes.
I have a coworker whose hairdresser was a pretty, young 19/20 year old girl. Last year one of her new clients tried to befriend her. She didn't think much of it. They went shopping, out for coffee,etc. One day the woman invited her over to her house. The girl pulled up and was about to get out. Four men jumped out of a van and started coming at her. What they didn't know was her boyfriend was following her to the house (don't remember why). The boyfriend jumped out and yelled and the guys got in the van and left. Fast forward a few months, the girl reported everything and a big sting operation happened. Around 30 people were involved, that female included. It blew my mind because unless you've experienced it, you really don't think about those things happening... or at least I didn't.

It is time to punish boys and men who pay prostitutes, not just punish the ptostitute. If there were no money to be made, then the crime rate would go down.

The increase in reports of human trafficking are not *necessarily* an indication that trafficking is increasing; they may be indication that we are better at identifying victims and reporting. Take heart, and remain steadfast.
Yes, correct. The problem likely has been severe and underreported for decades, but now we are developing eyes to see these individuals. Physicians, nurses, hotel staff, flight attendants, dentists, and others are learning to recognize and assist these victims. For people who want to help: we need resources - safe housing, clothing, food, and counselors and artists and physical trainers who are willing to undergo training in working with victims of toxic stress and repetitive trauma to work with some very challenging patients.
Yes, it is very likely that a number of these girls and young women have undocumented infants, and we assume that these children grow up in the Life, exposed to violence and exploitation. To help them (and countless other *documented* children that grow up amidst violence and exploitation), I believe the answer is much larger and more difficult: we *all* need to work to mitigate or eliminate racism and poverty, (including racist posts and hate speech on social media). Sounds like pie in the sky, but other societies/countries have done a far better job working toward this end with far fewer resources than we have in the U.S. Surely then WE are capable.

lygophile no....our govt entities expend too much resources with the War on Drugs....they almost veiw sex trafficing as karma (in their eyes) for bad choices and that the victim doesnt deserve their help

Exactly right. They hardly talk about this in American schools in my experience (at least not effectively). They need to dedicate days in class in elementary and perhaps middle schools to this subject and to informing unaware children to the real signs of it for their own safety and the safety of others.

3 days ago my friend Vanessa had someone try abduct her while she was walking home at night, the police caught the van, and driver, but the other suspects fled.
For the past 5+ years, I've always carried a switchblade with me. It stays in my pocket, ready to use if I need it. I haven't had to use it on anyone yet. I had an incident 3 weeks ago when a man was hanging out in the alley by my garage, and walked into my backyard. I had it ready, but he was coming to see the old tenants who used to live there before me.
The only reason I got out of my car was because my neighbors and their loud dog were also in the backyard.
the problem is that many of the kids dont have parents who are safe and have no where to go. we need more safe homes for abused youth to move to
& that's not just strangers who predate. In fact, it's possible that it's usually someone they know well & someone who's trusted.

Oh my...I remember when I was 15yo, I was walking home back from school, with my headphones on. I was feeling uneasy, so I stopped the music and heard a car behind me. When I turned around the car was following slowly, and then accelerated reaching my side. It was a middle aged woman, and asked me: "Hi! Do you want to come with me? I'll take you home", and I was like: "Uhm, no, thank you." but she insisted, so I told her: "listen, I said no." and faked a phone call. The woman just went full speed and GIRL, I DIDN'T REALIZED. It seems so obvious but I always thought she was just a weird woman trying to help in a very weird way. Sorry for the bad english, I'm Italian...

If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's to trust no one.
There has been a tremendous amount of victim-blaming. The first step toward a solution is changing the terminology and our approach: rather than arresting underage "prostitutes,", we need to work harder to provide victims of sex trafficking with safe places for recovery that are equipped with staff trained in trauma-informed care, PTSD, medical issues related to chronic abuse and sexual violence, substance dependence, and education.
I completely agree. Six years ago i stopped using the label 'prostitute' in a decision made after i began asking women working in that line what dreams they fostered. My favourite topic was to invite them to talk about their dream house. It often took a bit of me clowning before they'd start actively imagining, or building on memories of old visions. Almost all of them wanted to live near their moms. Not in the same house, not even next door; No, the sweet spot seemed to be a short walk between theirs and their mom's front door.
One woman, who'd been in a tumultuous relationship with her pimp for 9 years, dreamed of a house full of songbirds inside and out.
I was 'seeing through water' by the time she finished talking about her wood-constructed cottage filled with birds. I couldn't help remembering the noise she and her partner of so many years made every time they had a fight. I knew the presence of birds in her fantasy signaled a yearning for domestic peace. Any time she got liquored-up or he came home on stimulants there was bound to be one of those explosions. No birds hung around then.
I should probably stop using the label 'pimp'. I know barely anything about him except that he's entertaining, passionate, and cares deeply for his kids. So does she, and they aren't even hers biologically.
Heath, it sounds as if you have forged some remarkable relationships. What a poignant story about the woman who wanted a house full of songbirds. You bring up an interesting point about traffickers, many of whom are men but some of whom are women. And some are friends or family members of the trafficking victim. We know even less about this population. I'm less forgiving of anyone who exploits minors and subjects my patients to repetitive physical/sexual/psychological violence. But it is important to realize that the industry of sex trafficking exists partly because of enormous socioeconomic disparity, and the traffickers and their victims often are byproducts of poverty and unemployment.

The most difficult ones to save are babies and very small children. Months ago while I was in a “big box” store, I heard a small child crying...probably between 2-4 yrs old. The cry sounded different than a normal baby cry...it sounded terrified and inconsolable. I “looked for” the child ( not intensely, just gazing in the direction of the sound, which was halfway across the store) but didn’t see anything....eventually it grew more distant & then I didn’t hear it anymore.
If I HAD gone and found the child, what could I have done? I could have made a scene; Asking the people who had her what was wrong? Were they her parent? Did they need help? If we’re going to make a difference we’re going to have to accept risking embarrassment, creating awkward situations, calling attention to ourselves as well as sometimes being wrong. But helping one child is a great deal more than the alternative.

Kathy I see what you are saying. I work at an airport. I really wonder at the things that are going on when I see a teenager or young girl in a car with a grown man. I'm learning how to spot and identify trafficking from watching videos like this. I'm very sad to hear the story about the baby. That must have really hurt your heart. It is good you are looking for these signs.

It's so sad that, oftentimes, the first situation is the one that wakes us up despite our not acting. It has happened to me with two separate matters. I now react immediately to both.
Y'all a seemingly nice woman approached me at the mall today and started talking to me out of nowhere and was promising me mentorship and a job to make a ton of money, get rich, and retire by 30 and was like, "ya lets meet up for coffee. You can meet my mentor and everything!" She was asking about my age, name, where I lived, even my phone number. I didn't know this lady and she came out of the blue while I was just trying on shoes. I suspected she was but I realize now she was likely a human trafficker

This happened to me recently. I'm 39 but I look pretty young. I was in Tjmaxx after getting off work early. The girl walked up to me and started up a conversation. She told me she use to work retail and we chatted a while because I did as well. She got my number and said she'd call or text so we could go get coffee. She text me but I didn't answer that night. I wanted to text her back because it wasn't clear why we needed to get coffee so I just wanted to be nosy and see what she'd say. I had no intention of meeting her because there was no reason to. Time ended up passing and I never text her back but now I'm seeing your comment and it's making me think. When we were chatting in the store something seemed off about her. She was telling me she wanted to progress and make more money and someone approached her right at the right time but it wasn't clear what she did as a job. Her eyes were weird too like she was kind of scared or worried and she barely blinked. So now I'm wondering was someone standing by watching her. She was pretty well dressed too like she looked well kept so maybe she was the front woman to get the girls hmmmm. Glad I peeped out the weird signs.

Well I did sense a weirdness but in the moment I couldn't put my finger on it. I really kind of hope I'm wrong about her because if I'm not that means she's approaching others and I know if I didn't know right away others won't and they might go.

I believe this wonderful woman knows exactly what's going on why and whom is doing this.... the eye doesn't see what the mind doesn't know is an amazing quote.. the main "customers" of "high end" trafficking are politicians, lawyers, law enforcement etc. they're rich, powerful and know they'll never face consequences due to cover ups... hundreds of kids have come forward as adults and have testified to this and yet no one believes them and or it never gets national attention... A large part of the problem is that when the richest and most powerful ppl in the world are involved they have limitless resources to hide, lie, cover and get away with anything and everything they want.

When I was exactly 15 years old, (I'm 28 now) I was in Walmart looking at CD's while my mom shopped for groceries.This Hispanic man, looking to be between 30-40 years old approached me.He was covered in what I would now recognize as gang related tattoos; they were on his face,neck, everywhere,and his English was very poor.He kept asking me if I liked to drink,what kinds of drugs I liked, and whether or not I enjoyed swimming.I was being polite, while trying to find an exit from the conversation.Then he started trying to convince me to leave with him,and I saw that as an opportunity to say "I'll have to go find my mom first." At that he became obviously frustrated, saying there was no need in that and to just leave with him.Luckily my mom walked up just then,and that guy took off as fast as he could.We told management about my experience, and they informed us that they had already received several of the same report that day.This took place in North Carolina.

I love how she accidentally said, " my family" Clearly a caring woman who is what a doctor should be! We don't see what we are afraid to see, I say. We don't see what we don't want to fix. It's too frightening, we think, too sick, and overwhelming. Or we take the judgmental route, and if they are above 15 , want to think it's their own fault. That they are inferior to us. Talking about it , exposing it is vital. We have to face this boggy monster! Our future depends on it. It's is hard to act, to know how to act. Yes. I am proud of this doctor for having courage and wisdom! Her humility and acknowledgement of the situation is vital in helpers. Shaming people is what many physicians are good at and it is not helpful. They need to listen to this lady, who is able to put her compassion above her arrogance.

When I was 17 a guy gave me his number and when I finally decided to call him he asked me if I like clothes ,money, jewelry and of course I said yes. He proceeds to ask me if I would like to go out of town and I was like NOPE. He asked me to go to Vegas with him and I just met him. Thank God I called him from a payphone and if course I hung up immediately. At the time I didn't know about human trafficking because this happened back in 1997. God blessed me with the wisdom and discernment to see what that was years later. It really makes me wonder how many women fell for that. Wow..just wow. I had a friend whose niece was trafficked in Bemidji to Minneapolis. The poor young girl was saved but the horrors that happened to her for a couple months left her feeling hopeless and unable to heal. She committed suicide. Her captor in prison. She was 15, 16 years old. Beautiful girl.

When she told the story of the girl. Saying “. I want my mommy”. I suddenly gulped You know that gasping for air when you’re just about to cry suddenly. I want to know how many of you felt that ? We should all. That is terrifying.

One time my husband, 2 year old daughter, our new born, and myself were at the Boston Aquarium. Our 2 year old was getting tired and grumpy so we decided to leave. My husband was holding her and she was crying and screaming for "mommy". No one even looked. I was a good few steps behind with the stroller and baby. She could have been being taken and not a single person even noticed. Perhaps people are afraid to offend but I'd rather be slightly offended than without my children.
I was working in a retail store and a lady cam to me white as a sheet and said her baby as taken. The look on her face was stark fear!!! I think the manager stepped in.

@@ALSILVERU2 oofff, lots of assumptions here. My child is not a snowflake and I can assure you all my children are disciplined. She was two and it was past her nap time. I would not describe that aquarium as peaceful at all, if anything it was chaotic. I'm not liberal nor am I a plague on my society. I was trying to illustrate a point that we're all so caught up in our own lives that we don't see what's going on right around us.

All I'm saying is we need to be more aware of what's going on around us. We live in a day and age where everyone's so focused on what's 2 ft in front of them.
If severe consequences were dealt to the men who buy these girls at the conference weekend, accompanied with shame and a registry and everything they deserve, it would go along way to deter. Instead, the only thing we do is try to scoop up some of the girls with a little net, in a huge tank.

I live in the Midwest I work in the hotel industry right next to my former job as a security officer at a casino inn and spa with a large children's water park. I want to bring community awareness and employee training of HST to the hospitality industry.

My mum works in a pediatric emergency department and she talked about the training she and a few other nurses went though to spot human trafficking. Others on her team have found girls that were presumed missing because of some of the signs mentioned in this video. Surprisingly, some of those small hand made "we'll buy your house" signs that we saw every day on the drive to school turned out to be connected to traffickers.

Yes, dlrunner, it may be a lack of moral courage. It could also be well-founded fear. Those who engage in buying and selling other human beings can be dangerous people and quite mentally ill. Health care professionals are just people, susceptible to threats and fears and prejudices and their own past experiences, and so they have different capabilities when it comes to confronting severe trauma. We need to have compassion for our health care workers, too.

I look younger than I am, and when I was 18 I had had a very heated argument with my mum on the payphone near the bus stop. I was crying non stop (She had triggered a BPD crisis) and I didn't want to go home. This guy stopped his car a d told me through the window if I wanted a ride, that a pretty girl like me shouldn't be crying. I told him I had a bf (I did) but he kept insisting. I told him to stop bothering me using Mexican curse words and ran into the nearby supermarket, the guy sped off. In that area there's a boarding school for kids of working class parents that can't take care of them. Years later I saw another man speaking to a girl on the same bus stop, she was alone, but as I approached he left. I didn't say anything. It just clicked that they both could've been traffickers. It's a common thing here in Mexico.
I’m a nurse in NYC and human trafficking is a new priority first time assessment for the patients in my facility. We actually have to document this now.
As a nurse, what have you done to make sure that the medical system isn't being used by US authorities to abuse their victims even more under the guise of providing medical and legal care? None of the nurses I spoke to were willing to even speak up to stop abuse, I would try to tell you what all has gone on, but am not allowed... Nobody is even helping the real victims of abuse speak up. I lost my children and grandchildren to human sex and drug trafficking. The law enforcement in san diego turns their back because they are most likely to accept bribes. I know this because I was gang raped for not keeping my mouth shut. Where is the justice in our society? My predators will be free from other crimes but haven't stood trial for what they did to me. Scarlett, I'm so, so sorry. I've met other young women and men who have been victims of sexual assault and/or victims of trafficking, and there has been no justice. AND, I've worked with officers from NYPD and Philadelphia PD and the FBI and even ICE who are very, very concerned about this problem and working to fix it. Organizations like GEMS are working to educate and re-train law enforcement. www.gems-girls.org

Yrs ago, we were at Niagra Falls. I became aware of a single man who seemed tp appear at every venue we were at. The hair on my neck was standing up. I said loudly to my then 14 yr. Old daughter. " Kristi come here, hold my hand" as I stared down the man (which she did). I never saw him after that. Always be aware of your surroundings. Thankyou God for saving our daughter🙏🙏🙏😇
She said that kids are approached by a trafficker within 48 hrs. You can’t even report someone missing until then. 😕
That’s actually a myth even some police officers believe, you can report someone missing at all times if you have a reasonable concern.
You can report a missing person at any time. And the first 24 hours are most vital. It’s common sense.
This protocol in the police system is probably well known to perpetrators and they know to move in fast.
I heard you should report a missing person as soon as you notice that something's not right.
That used to be true but thank God it is no longer.

This issue has always been so close to my heart. I remember a pimp approaching me in an underground train station which lead up to the city center mall. I was coming from my car through that station when I was about 19/20... I felt scared and uncomfortable. He tried to give me his contact information. A woman I used to work for only affirmed my story... Not because I told her but just from hearing the scenario. I just wish more could be done to the people who actually do it...
A year ago I moved with my family to upper California. About 2 to 3 weeks of attending school, people knew that we were new in town (not a big town very small) and we were walking back home about, the school is 3 streets away from were we used to live and all of a sudden a red pickup truck drove slowly stopped right next to my sister and a guy was about to come out, but they saw me, I'm not that tall only 5'8 but built. She didn't see it, but I did, I saw all the red flags. I pulled her by her backpack right behind me and I put my hand behind my back as if I was reaching for a gun. I stood there just glaring back at the guy, it felt like hrs, but it was only seconds and he gave up and they drove off.

No, not true at all, in the US, poverty is the biggest source of trafficking and it's often people who were raised in those conditions who are the perpetrators.

My toddler daughter was being carried out of a gated park in a very upscale neighborhood by a very stylish woman as her grandmother read the newspaper near by. Thank God she looked up in time and ran to and confronted the woman who relinquished my daughter. My mother in law was so freaked out by the near tragedy that she did not tell us about it for 20 years. I am so grateful for my happy ending and distraught to know this is REAL.

My trafficker literally confessed to local police and the attorney general and he was never arrested. As I sought help from law enforcement, my trafficking situation became increasingly more dangerous. Law enforcement literally has multiple video confessions from my trafficker and yet no one has been arrested and the investigation seems to be going nowhere.

Great, Kanani Titchen, that you speak up and explain about this subject. I've met victims and counselors who were visited by clients, female clients, who talked about MK Ultra and Project Monarch, both engaged in human trafficking. In the UK there's a fast-rising number of youngsters experimenting with drugs and drink in their teenage years. Handlers approach them outside the school gate, forcing kids to be couriers. I strongly suggest that in the training for psycho-therapist and other forms of therapies, where mental problems are addressed, this subject of human trafficking is discussed, so that therapists can follow the example of Kanani Titchen and keep their eyes open while asking the right sort of questions. The Netherlands, and Belgium, are the 2 European countries with the highest intensity of human trafficking.
I was in a dollar store with my mom when we both heard this muffled crying/begging. It kept on saying *please help me!* The voice sounded like a recording, like it was coming through a phone. Because of this I decided not to do anything about it. All because I thought it wasn't my business. On the walk back, I regretted it so much. If that child was in a bad situation, I had the opportunity to help them but I didnt. I still regret this so much

That’s actually a VERY common way for a trafficker to trick a women. Because our motherly instincts as women come out when we hear a baby/child crying. They use it to lure you in and kidnap you. Be diligent, if you EVER hear something like that, call the police immediately and let them handle it.

What an important presentation. Everyone needs to watch this! I am wondering, though, how are teens bussed away from their parents every weekend? What do their parents know about it? Maybe this was answered but I missed it...
Great question. It's alarming, isn't it? We didn't ask for details about their being bussed to the city (risk of re-traumatizing the patient), so that's a better question for law enforcement and FBI. But I see many teens who are (appropriately) off spending time with friends on weekends, so it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility that parents would miss this (especially parents who work 7 days per week and/or a couple of different jobs and/or with younger kids in the house). In some cases, parents and/or trusted family members may be involved in the trafficking.
Victims who are groomed by loving interactions from the pimp usually have massive parent issues and don’t feel loved by them. A lot of parents neglect the kids once they turn 12. And if the family is broke and it’s a single parents working alll the time they might not notice. Or the parents could be heavily disabled.
The more upsetting thing we don't know is how like she said they could be anywhere. They are in hospitals too, police departments, schools, foster/adoption services etc. They are everywhere and are devil's pretending to be angels of light.

Whenever I read/research human trafficking cases all I can think about is the guy who tried to coherse me into his car when I was 19 years old and walking alone to work. Obviously I'll never know if I was over reacting or not, but I got awful vibes from him and he was chilling. I was easily pressured back then and I am SO glad I was stubborn that day.

I am former US Army 11Bravo infantry. We are trained in combat arms trafficking and I can list red flags to potential traffickers.
-people who use the term "patience" as buzzword and potential threat

What a profoundly amazing woman
In HS I knew s girl who started barely coming to school then one day no one heard from her again. Her family was pretty well known but no one had a clear answer where she went..she was only maybe 16? There were rumors about trafficking & drug houses. I thought that she just moved away or went to rehab but nothing on socials, no word of her since that day pretty much. I've googled her & there's nothing. It's been about 6-7 years now. I've commented this before but damn I really wonder what happened to that girl.. I wish I did something..
Idk how much I am greatful she made it her business to take on human trafficking. THANK YOU VERY MUCH DR. WE NEED MORE HEROS LIKE YOU.
