- Celebrating the return of the Tata Sierra we drive the original Tata Sierra Turbo from the 1990s. And alongside we have also driven the Tata Estate that was on sale from 1992 to 2000 and got the indirect injection 1.9-litre diesel that made 68bhp. These were the first two passenger cars made by the erstwhile TELCO, predecessor to today’s Tata Motors.
In the 12th episode of evo India’s signature Gone But Not Forgotten series, editor Sirish Chandran gets behind the wheel of India’s first SUV, which also spawned the station wagon- luxury cars in the 90s that were also India’s first cars with power steering, power windows and more! These were the cars that laid the template for the Safari, Sumo and other Tata vehicles that followed!

What’s your memory of the Tata Sierra and Tata Estate?
My dad''s first car. 1997 white Sierra. That backseat was the place to be.. When i grew up and had money Sierra was gone :(
My first impression when I saw the new Gurkha rear window area - aila Sierra 😀
Breaking finger while moving seat back was quite normal in Sierra
My neighbor had it and used to make.up.with every possible way to touch it..feel it..
Contessa Plz
We own both these models, We still have 3 Sierras, 1992, 1995 and 1996 Sierras and 1993 Estate. We unfortunately had to sell off our Estate about 10 years back, but retained all 3 Sierras. This video brought back lot of memories from my childhood. Thanks for the awesome quality content. Those ultramile MT tyres and alloys look sick on the turbo sierra. awesome.
3 Sierras! Wow!
😍😍😍😍
Okay you're Rich, we get it
You must be rich
Any plans to sell I am desperately looking to buy one
Just love this content. Still remember the days when people who own a Sierra or Estate were looked up with so much of craze on owning these cars... Good olden days... Nostalgic 😁

Sirish just knocks it out of the park. What a presenter. Absolutely brilliant
Thanks man
Brought back old memories from 1995-96....dad drove a Tata Telcoline as his office car, and his boss had a Sierra in green colour i think. I was awe struck seeing it for the first time as an 8 year old. Excellent video, thanks
We're glad you enjoyed the video and it bringing back fond memories :)
great memories
The first true SUV before Tata Safari.
💪💪
I feel a bit sad that India started with having SUVs like Sierra and Safari and today we have a glut of oversized hatchbacks like the Creta and the KIAs instead of proper SUVs.

This is where a lot of 80's kids in India found their first love !!! My uncle had one and I still remember drooling over it, though it was a rust machine. Me alegro de que estés de vuelta señorita....
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
👌👌
My dad owned a tata estate and we used it for family trips to himachal and punjab , tbh it was such a premium car for that time.
My uncle took us to Ramtek temple at nagpur in his Sierra, Believe me or not fully loaded the car did 140 kmph for a significant time.... It was the day I fell in love with cars..
Just a tiny correction: the X2 platform debuted with the Aria and was subsequently used on Safari Storme and Hexa. The Sierra and Estate (and even the first Safari) were based on the old Tatamobile 206 pickup platform which was probably partially derived from the 407 light truck.
The X1 platform on the other hand was used to refer to the one used on the Indica Vista, Manza, Zest, Bolt and now the Nexon.
This Siarra was my Childhood Crush .... And the dream car,.
It was a childhood crush and the dream of many 🤩🤩
Mine too
The design of Tata Estate still feels practical even at this age..If at all Tata relaunches this with an updated engine and other stuffs, it would still find buyers..Even the safety aspect is covered with an all metal frame weighing over 1600kilos… Thanks for bringing the nostalgia Team Evo
But Indians just don’t like estates
Thanks for your kind words :)
We can only hope the new generation accepts the estate body styles
Sierra is a dream car and great to see it again. I have seen many restored versions of Sierra in my recent trips to Kerala. And for the suggestions for next car, it would be good to feature Daewoo Cielo...It was good looking sedan(not enough to beat lancer tho)!
We will surely feature it :)
yup we are looking for a Cielo
The excitement on Sirish's face for old school tech makes all these videos so great !!
I am 30 years old and I have seen and loved all this cars growing up.
Kudos to EVO team for bringing this format to us.
Thankyou Bhavesh, really appreciate it
Glad you enjoyed it
Spent at least 300 km during my childhood traveling in uncle’s Sierra; didn’t understood the kind of suffocation the elders suffered as I was like a curious little monkey in a whole new world. It actually taught me how to love a car and what could be the future. Haven’t been in touch with Estate as it was a rare species but spent a lot in Sumo, the proper 4door rugged SUV.
Couple of years ago, when Tata totally discontinued its body on frame species, it was taken as unavoidable hard reality; though expecting them to bring Yeti like product as Sierra.
New Sierra is good, but will miss out the OG Sierra’s swag.
Times have changed and the Sierra will have to evolve with it
All time favourate cars...🧭🧭🧭
I had an ESTATE, and I loved it, despite the ladder frame it could take comers well that too at speed, and yes it took a lot of work to keep the engine on the boil.. if you could call it that... but it was fun. RWD was fun on sandy roads. Thanks for bringing back good old memories.
Welcome!
me at high school in Poona (late 90's) ...i still remember sierra's presence on road was colossal.. I had a mag cutout of sierra turbo back then..tacho's were a bigg big thing those days..one would beg for tachos..indian auto industry ..in those days..OMG !
What an era that was! xD
thanks for producing such vids..pls do come up on opel astra & ford escort of that era ! I remember astra was perhaps the first in its category to have a cooled glove box !
We’ve come a long way!
Tata Sierra and Estate if launched these days with EV or ICE will be huge hit... What a beauty ..
The Sierra is coming very soon. Do check this out: ruclips.net/video/POVsMWncnSI/видео.html
Sierra is coming!
Nostalgic episode Sirish. I have heard from mechanics that owners who kept the sierra for a ling time, either tried swapping their engines with the later model Sumo or Safari because the Sierra engine block had issues with water getting in or something. Quality control had significantly improved by the time the Safari was launched.
We would love to see similar classic restorations of old cars. Old Fiat 1100s, 118 NE, Ambys, Contessas. I only wish the Indian government allowed engine swapping. A lot of these old giants would still be on our roads. They had tons of character, they just needed better hearts. With the vehicle scrapping policy, it would be heartbreaking to see these old goats head to the crusher.
the law was changed because of emissions, and rightfully so. old marine engines were being put into taxis and they were horribly polluting
@@sirishch i agree, but why don't we have the culture of buying new engines from manufacturers. Modern engines are cleaner, significantly more efficient and reliable. I have always fancied an old ambassador with the reliable Toyota D-4D engine.
@@sirishch would love it if you could do a podcast in YT about this. I m sure many like minded enthusiasts would appreciate it. Just a suggestion Sirish Ji 🙏
Guys!
Just to tell it, he is wearing a watch which costs as much as a Tiago. It is Omega Speedmaster Professional moon-watch. It is a copy of the first watch that went on moon (The chronograph in the watch actually saved astronauts from a oxygen tank failure).
Well spotted
my father had owned 3 sierras
one white, one green, one black
the black one is forever saved in my memories, a rust bucket (That's why we had to scrap it) but dependable.
the only car in our area driving in the july 2006 floods was my father in that sierra.
rescuing us from the school, my father fitted in around 12 children in the car and dropping them off to their homes.
also rescuing my cousin brother who was in college in Andheri
that sierra is a part of my fondest memories of my childhood...
man i'd like to buy a sierra right now.

just the other day after hearing these names at the expo, I googled for the images but found very few good ones.. this is so timely!
hard to find....
Boy i was total fan of tata safari, I owned 1 when I was just 20 years age, I managed to get hands of the first bottle green colour in pune in 2000, it was abeast and an onroad price of Rs 820000/..I had taken it to kullu manali and rohtang pass in 2002.It was an dream come true to drive from pune to rohtang pass with the safari, she never let me down, even though I had a 4*2 , she took the hills , rains, snow with a smile, and those are the inseprable moments with my Tata SAfari .
Always a Tata Fan specially for Safari.
My dad owned the original Tata mobile 207 (the 1st generation). He used to work for Telco. I still remember as a child what joy that car brought me whenever I went on a drive with my dad.
we had one (the sierra) , and my dad made all my family buy one. although the problems were there but it was a super cool feeling to have one. then we got a green safari and the interior felt like a cockpit as a child. some really good memories.
This is the funniest Indian car review I have ever seen. Growing up I was fascinated by Sierra and its rear coil suspension which would eat up a speed breaker without any noticeable movement in the car. Estate for me was the kind of a car that only the those old rich men would own. And those ads for these two cars were really impressive and would never get bored watching them many times. Also, the DC design SIerra looked really cool. It feels silly now for having that emotional reaction to these metal beasts. Thank you for taking effort on reviewing it for us
😁😁
Owned an estate from 1998 to 2006, drove 1.6 lac km. Best vehicle i ever owned. Most comfortable, huge and powerful. and amazing road presence, the Autos and small cars would just move out of the way.
Great memories
Great video. Really loved how you combined the trend of those times, your affection for the Sierra and Estate as a child and the emotion that was beautifully conveyed through your voice.
Sierra and the first-gen Safari and Indica hold special place in my heart too as they were all special in more than one way.
Similarly, you can bring a Daewoo Matiz and Cielo on next episode ( I know finding these would be really difficult but it would be great if you can) and describe the whammy Korean carmaker's journey in India.
We surely will be doing episodes on those cars. Please do subscribe to the channel and stay notified to all our video drops :)
thanks Neel. We're trying to get hold of a Cielo....
I own a '97 Sierra and every other week i get offers to sell the beauty, also it frequently gets compliments at red light stop-overs. I now also own the Safari'22 model but still rate the Sierra higher in terms of the driving comfort, view & bull like build..
Thanks sirish sir for bringing back old memories I remember one of my dad friend used to had tata estate and at the end he received just 25000/- of good condition car that used to be a sad stories of tata cars back then
Can I request you guys to do a similar video on a Tata Sumo? The Sumo made Tata Motors a household brand and also brought in the much-needed revenue along with the fame and trust.
A record milestone before the Indica I believe.
As a kid i remember knowing about the Sumo through a little scale model toy. I instantly loved the way it look & feel...only later to realise it's an actual vehicle when my parents did trips to distant relatives. It was a new vehicle back then but soon became a household name cause it was literally everywhere as tourist permit transport.
We will soon be doing a video on the Tata Sumo aswell. Please do subscribe and stay notified for all our video drops :)
@Sirish, I just went and liked it before I watched the video.. lol.. we had an estate for 3-4 months.. best time ever
✌
Great rewind bro you gave my old memories back my uncle was in Navy when he came on holidays he bought Tata estate and we went on drive i still remember that ride . Tata should launch Seirra like new Safari in Diesel
the ICE version is coming!
In the early 1990’s a chap who owned either a Tata Sierra or a Tata Estate, had to be a ‘big shot’. Normal people couldn’t afford one of these. Early on it had that 1948 cc Tata Naturally aspirated diesel engine. Then in the mid to late 1990’s they introduced the Turbo 2143 cc diesel engine with the Borg Warner Electric Shift on the Fly 4WD system, operated by a switch located near the gear lever on the console. The same engine did duty in the Sumi and Safari and all. Outlook Magazine had these as subscription gifts in a lucky draw. I can’t remember how many times I filled that subscription form and subscribed, but sadly, never won a Sierra.
Wonder if anybody won that…
I love this series and it could only be done by the maestro "enthu-cutlet" Sirish! Cars I would love to see featured - my all time favourite - the first Honda City 1.5 (100 bhp!!), the "original" Pajero (did an unforgettable 2500 km round trip to Ladakh in it), of course the Gypsy and then the Honda CRV (the first one launched here - manual), Accord (even did a rally in one), Esteem (my first drool car), the Standard 2000 and Contessa - just really weird when you think of them today - Frankenstein Cars! And then some oddities like the the Terracan, MM 540 and Armada...
That list is exciting and we will surely feature them soon :)
So many to feature on this series 😅
Sirish's happiness throughout the video tells it all. Great stuff this.
Those days during my college years I use to drive maruti 800 but one of my classmate had Sierra it was like he earned huge respect driving a tata Sierra really nostalgic this episode had made me remember those days

Even today we indians are not appreciable of cars we just see them as mean of travel. Yes there are car enthusiasts in india but we are very less. Of course the economic conditions also was the reason but still mindset also played the roll. My father's friend had a such nice car it was a vintage i don't even remember the name. He never cared about it much and sold it one day.
the tribe of us enthusiasts is growing by leaps and bounds
I had a maroon Sierra Turbo 1998 - kept her for a year but had to sell because I moved abroad. Man what a truck that was. I faced none of the practicality issues.. if you push the front seat way up front and fold down the backrest, there’s ample space to exit and enter into the back. AC has never had problem but yes the back is relatively hot. Suspension needed some work with but the engine and gearbox never gave any issues.. miss that rig… ❤
Thank you sirish sir and Evo india team for such an amazing video we owned a seirra in the 2000 and it was one heck of a beast truly a desirable product at that time and good that tata is bringing it back as an EV

True that
Growing up there used to be a blue Estate in our apartment. Every time I walked past it I used to stare at how huge it was and the presence it commanded. There used to be a light on the bottom of the door when opened which, to me, was so futuristic. Great video!
Sir please do the Indica series and please start a bike series of gone but not forgotten.... It is such a nice show sir.....keep it up... We 90s kids are waiting to see more of these and relieve our petrolhead childhood....
Tata Sierra was my first suv crush 😍, I use to cut sierras pictures from magzines and newspapers i had made collage book with all those old cars. Yeah i am from 90s but I feel sad that we Indians don't respect our old cars and don't restore them much even the rto rules don't allow to modify them as per emission norms by swapping with new engines. But I hope with new age ev tech that could be very possible.

@@sirishch I have big memories with TATA Sumo. Strangely i get dreams of driving a Sumo very often.
I guess when i was around 10yrs old, we went on a family trip. There i bought a mini scale model of Tata Sierra white colour. God, I loved it. Was having a blast with it, showing off to my friends and enjoying it to my heart's content. But unfortunately i lost it. The pain was intolerable. We boys do cry for our cars.
We love our cars
Brb, crying😢
I drove the Sierra back in 2009 for about seven kilometers. My friend's car. It felt like driving a truck. But everyone on the road was in awe. Including THE ME 😁😁😁😁

those days were different.....
You know what they say “ don’t meet your childhood heroes “ . As a child Tata sierra looked so handsome and beautiful. I dreamt of owning one one day. But now it looks so ordinary.
wow. Brings back old memories. we had a red 1994 sierra. such a comfortable car. Those seats were another level comfort. Did 3 lakhs kms in about 15 years. Original engine lasted for 2 lakh kms easily with All AC usage. We also restored and fitted 4x4 exterior trims and bumpers .
Im born in 1995 but I love all 90 s cars gypsy is the mos which I loved and my dad had tata estate in 2008 we bought it from goa it was in red colour and that was reall awesome after couple of years we sold that recently i bought tata estate for 40 grand and brakes were failing all the time I don't know what was the issue but then i sold it, look day by day everything is becoming high tech but the main thing is at 90 s it' was amazing a car for that era with those features and it's old school but it will be always DAD...... !!!!!
I was still a kid and my eyes would light up every time I saw the Estate!

My father had a sierra, until this day I still feel it was the most comfortable and tank like car. It was a real suv.Absolutely loved it and would definitely buy it if they relaunch it!
Awesome video!!!! Such an amazing content, This old school cars has an soul to attract, I remember my first ride i was drooling inside the car and it was fitted with one of d best speakers back in those days.....Miss this kind of SUV's now a days.

Truly sensational cars from our home grown brand which were much ahead of the time. Growing up, I loved the Sierra and the Estate and always dreamt of owning one some day. That was the time we were going around in a MS 800, however now I would love to get my hands on the new Sierra. I beg to slightly differ when you say 3 door SUV's did not work or will not work, I say people would love 3 door niche products today more then ever considering most of the families are nuclear now and most adults have their personal cars. I wish they had still retained the curved glass which made it an iconic differentiating factor.
True but as you said 3 doors are still niche and manufacturers won’t take the risk if they can help it
Still sierra looks so perfect ❤️🔥
Timeless design
True that growing up tata sierra was a highly desirable vehicle... It was stunning and a looker... But even now the old Mitsubishi pajero has the looks and also a better offroader of the beaten track.... Nice to see... 👍
A head turner even today!
Love this series, kudos to Evo India.

Since AVINYA is a concept to demonstrate Tata's design & technology prowess, production spec car should be called e-STATE. At least, if they intend to make a three row iteration of AVINYA.

Hi Shirish, how about a feature on the Standard 2000 and the Contessa Classic? Those were really powerful cars. A feature on the Rover Montego would also do good. I remember, as a kid, heading to school in then Madras in a rickety school van, I had first set eyes on a Rover Montego (around 1993, I guess) near the then Chola Sheraton. Was olive green in color and a stunner. It had just pulled up beside our van at a traffic junction. Couldn’t take my eyes of that beauty. That scene’s forever etched in mind. What days they were.
Tata cars the best most safe cars. Had all of them right from. Tata mobile, Siera, Estate, Sumo, lndica loved them after1995. Till today waiting for a Van from TATA.

Well that Trax continues in its new avatar
2 cool cars of the 90s , I envied those who owned the Estate, looked so luxurious . Sierra was a cool looking car
TATA SUMO was the real successor of the DNA of the OG Sierra and Safaris. Sumo got rid of all the impractical or let’s say the bells and whistles of the earlier vehicles. This is what helped to take the Tata to the masses.

From January 1994 to November 2005, our Family Car was the Tata Estate. The one featured in the video is a later version as the first ones had all four power windows buttons on the driver door. The suspension was awesome and bumps rarely came up to the cabin. Top speed we clocked was around 108 kmph. Gear arrangement for the first and reverse meant we needed to be alert as the other car was a Zen. The boot could house 4-US size bags with ease.
Major issues to name were the sump was a bit low and we had leaks more than once and if the power steering booster failed, it was a handful to drive as the steering at full gave only half the outcome.
So impressive was our experience with the Estate that it was succeeded by the Indigo Marina till June 2019.
Estate and Marina must have left sooooo different!
@@sirishch an ocean apart. A much refined and evolved platform. Lot easier to maintain and to find parts. A Diesel Engine with turbo kicking in at 3000 rpm. But an equally impressive suspension system.
Imagine the level of pride and happiness for those who bought OG Sierra fresh out from the showroom in the early 90s !
The fact that the plastic wheel covers have lasted on the Estate say a lot about its quality. Those were the days when cars were built to last generations!
Good to know a lot of information
Some of them I didn't know
