Thank you so much for the detailed information on watering. I liked how you reviewed all the factors involved with watering properly instead of just saying 1-2 inches of water per week. Loved the introduction to the gadgets out there as well. My favorite part was going over how to figure out how long you have to water by checking 6-12inches down. Great idea and I can't wait to try it.
This guy is such a badass I love it he knows so much his brain is like a sponge when it comes to gardening I wish he was my friend that live close.....
Hi John, I am from Canada and I am totally in awe of your gardening abilities! I just put in two 4X12X12' deep raised bed square foot gardens. I'm looking forward to learning a ton from your experience and hope if I have a question perhaps you might find the time to answer to help me get started in my quest to growing my own greens!
John, I can only guess at how much water I give my toms. I'm hoping a decent moisture meter will give me a better indication whether I'm watering enough or too much. Cheers, my friend and thanks for the tips. Bob
hey john, i am trying to grow peppers and tomatoes on my terrace using a hydroponic system, can you help me as to how much should i water them on a daily basis ?
@KainanRa I'm in alberta and we have a snow threat for friday. we were blessed we didnt have it on the long weekend but we are suppose to have rain from thursday untill sunday with snow on friday. I hope my tomatoes servive they have so far.
But, this is my first rodeo doing raised beds - but okay - do you water the plants right after planting?? I'm planting in the heat of the day and I know from past that you are not suppose to water your garden in the heat of the afternoon - but I just planted them are they okay until this evening or should i water them now.
+Paige Roberts okay - I have excellent soil - but is okay that my soil is dry on top of the bed.. but still need to know if i water just be cause the top of the bed is dry?
Are you sure? I live in Renton and the sun has been out a lot especially yesterday. I had to whip out my sunglasses when I'm driving on 167 or 405. LOL.
I have sandy / black dirt that gets hard. when turned over is nice and soft until it get a little hard. What can I do to stop pooling of water after rain spell? the soil is not absorbing water that well.
Funny how everyone is so different. I actually enjoyed the thorough analysis of the factors, options, and reasoning behind. I'm a newbie gardener and an engineer though, so I'm sure both factor in as well.
I let my tap water sit out for days before giving it to plants but they get sick. I was told our tap water sits around 600 ppm. I gotta wonder what is in the tap water. maybe too much calcium? the pH is about 8.5.. and it takes a lot to lower it. rain water seems to make them healthy again. im wondering if reverse osmosis is good. anyone use it?
hi year ago dude. maybe if the water sits too long it gets too many mineral and salt build up. I mean the water evaporates some, but the minerals remain. this can be why. try to use the water the next day if u want chlorine to evaporate.
Why is simulating rain necessary? The EPA and 50 states recommend drip-line irrigation which doesn't simulate rain. Everything I've read says, "water the root zone". My motto, "Water where it counts, water the root zone".
Don't we want to save water? The industry says, "water the root zone", Rain waters leaves, weeds, dirt, sidewalks, and driveways... just like wands that are designed to simulate rain. Simulating rain, wastes water.
Um, if you simulate rain, guess what? You are watering the drip line. Since the leaves of the plant prevents rain water from saturating the the stem / trunk of the plant. It's it acts like an umbrella and guides the water around the "drip line". Now you know!
Could you stop a chronic argument? My husband is not a gardener, but claims if I water my zucchini and cucumbers from above, like rain, that I will wash all the pollen off/out of the blossoms. That I should water from below the plant at ground level. I disagree and get vegetables. What's your thoughts?
The soil might be wet at the 4" of your finger but bone dry down where roots are, of tomatoes for example. Use a meter always. Here is excellent video explaining why fingers should remain in your pocket: ruclips.net/video/qhTMUcSc8fU/видео.html
I got a waterstik today after getting 2 failed analogue moister testers. I cant see the LED blink in bright overcast weather during the day, I have to cover it with my hand to see it, also the instructions on the depth it should be for the type of plants is really iffy, so cannot recommend this to anyone ever, I'm going to get a better tester off ebay and get a refund for the waterstik. about $10 AUS
Michele Goodsell thank you. I've watched , I don't know how many videos and books to find o out how many times in the week to get that one inch of water. You would think it would be common sense, to mention how many times during the week is best. Is it once a week , a little daily... yicks. Thanks again.
Actually dude.. most growers on UT advise NOT to use the rain method and are telling me that you need to water at the roots. ie. water from the bottom. So in a veritable bed such as yours they are coming up with all sorts of deep root watering techniques, as apparently watering from the top for only a few minutes produces shallow roots. (Not sure what the problem is with that). So I was doing what you are doing and it appears its not right!! Apparently watering the leaves creates a greater chance of disease and rot or some such thing. anyway drip feed seems to be the go I'm relay no expert and have no idea if this is just splitting hairs.. sorry if I come across as negative.. maybe you can 'edumacate' me!
+bicanoo_magic Actually dude... I would love to see where you read that foliar feeding creates a greater chance of disease. Second off you need to understand that almost all of the life is in the top 18 inches, and that 90% of the feeder roots are in the first 4 inches. So I don't know who you've been talking to but they're an idiot. Also bottom feeding seems like a big waste of water when you are having to wait for the bottom layer of soil to gather enough water just to have the water wick up to the top. Seems to me you would definitely be drowning out your roots of oxygen.
+Dj illicit Mate steady on... I would never call anyone on my channel an idiot because they aren't a guru on my subject. ...obviously you're having trouble with the English language as I said 'most growers on RUclips' are advocating bottom feeding. This is not my subject but sifting through everyone else's ideas there is strong support and reasoning for bottom watering and people better than you are suggesting 'foliar feeding' spreads disease. As I said.. I'm no expert but slagging me off is just primitive.. If you want to know all about electronics, electric bikes, enterprise IT, boats of any kind, container homes, 12 dimensional spirituality or the key to successfully raising a happy and wealthy family... I have the experience and the knowledge in spades..so just ask me...but whooooa betide if you say something stupid.... 'cause I'll have you!!!
+Dj illicit What does 'volume' have to do with anything or prove how well you or your country are at quality agriculture? Your country is the largest producer of GMO foods in the world... and we all know how that type of food is complete rubbish and disruptive for the human DNA.. it just proves how arrogant you are how worthless your opinion is in general let alone on RUclips.. you and your aggression tell me your not sure of what you are talking about because if you truly knew, you wouldn't care.. you're a fraud mate! and so is your channel...
bicanoo_magic I'm a fraud...Wow! I've been growing for over 16 years and I'm only 34. A fraud huh? You still haven't sent me any links supporting your opinions so that I can make an honest rebutle. Why don't you start there and show me how "Most" growers on RUclips are using the method you speak of. I'm not a fraud... Obviously you have internet you should try this magical place called google and try doing this thing they must not teach in Austrailia called READING then get back to me with some research that supports your theory. As far as GMO's are conserned I've done extensive research on the issue and found that although I disagree with the idea there is no peer reviewed study showing the kind of finding you are insisting are fact. If you know of any please send a link so I can study them because I hate the idea of GMO's and would love to read a PEER REVIEWED study on them that confirms what your saying. Thus far you have not givin me one shred of data to support any of your OPINIONS. My life is dependent upon my crop, and I am telling you my opinions based upon the years of trial and error. If you don't like them show me why or how I could improve them. You must be religious or something to be so stuck in a one way mind frame and not willing to except other peoples experiences. GOOD DAY MATE
It only rains twice a week in Ireland... once from Sunday to Wednesday and then from Thursday to Saturday.
Best Wishes, Brendan.

Thank you again John. Watering is always a dilemma, especially when we have government water restrictions in a drought.John in Australia.
I definitely have a crush of John:) And I've passed these videos to my friends. Dont know why I havent started growing vegetables until now.
ZennLa13, make a video how you eat those vegetables

@OS253 Lucky you. We have had rain everyday down here in Vancouver.
I have sandy / black dirt that gets hard. when turned over is nice and soft until it get a little hard. What can I do to stop pooling of water after rain spell? the soil is not absorbing water that well.
Reggie Anglin Try using a surfacant.
Add some peat moss to aerate the soil, and vermiculite to help hold in moisture.
Add coconut coir to hold moisture.
The triple one i like but one thing about it be very careful with it because it does brake easily not sure how accurate it really is either.
those 15 dollar things measure soil fertility? that sounds awesome.. i need one
Thank you sir
Dude your videos look and sound awesome but they are too long it will be my favorite channel if they were nice and short five min being longest
Chris Altamirano k

manipulating the natural environment. drip lines just save water

Cynthia Smith-Heiden I always water the soil rather than the plant tops.
It saves water.
Looks like my plant dies a little more each time I water it
