I’m nine years old and I already started planted so many seeds 😊
That's a really superb job - well done! :-)
Good for you 👍
Such a smart kid!!!
Thanks everyone
After living with just two 15 square foot vegetable beds for years, my husband said it was okay to make a 200 sq foot “flower” bed on the front lawn. It’s shaped like an irregular oval island to give it more curb appeal and I’ve planted fruit trees and vegetables between the flowers to keep up the curb appeal. Funny enough, most people can’t tell the difference between flowers and vegetable plants anyway.
I bet it looks totally stunning Sherry - it certainly sounds it anyhow. :-)
I never thought to put them together but have recently seen videos with people doing this and it looks amazing and is so economical, Thanks for these tips to help conserve space :)
That is awesome, Sherry!
Our front yard is what's south facing so I've just been slowly taking it over, each year claiming more and more grass. This year my husband has finally become a willing and enthusiastic participant as he can now see that it's way more beneficial than just a pretty grass space.
@@RandiBrenneman80 I took over 90% of the yard because I hate mowing. Luckily my wife enjoys gardening with me, made for an easy persuasion.
“Never mind growing your food in this, you can eat your food off it it’s so clean and lovely.” That cracked me up. This guy is a gem. Grateful to have found his channel.
Thanks Kimberly! So pleased you found the channel too. :-)
I was having a bad day. Landed here by accident. Feeling a lot better now. Thank you! 😊
That's really lovely to read. Welcome to the channel! :-)
I love how Rosie is so interested in all the gardening activities. Adorable
She’s a great companion in the garden for sure!
she really watches every move he makes!!!
She's jumpy lol
@@GrowVeg Requirements for this project: you'll need a raised bed, cardboard, a growing medium, some tools, plants and seeds... dog, optional *hehe*
Finally a video that gets straight to the point with helpful and important information to start a veggie garden.Thank you
I don’t normally comment on RUclips videos but you’re an absolute gem of a human! I’m moving into my own place soon and I’m going to start a garden and build a green house, your video has helped massively. I’m going to watch many of your videos to guide my growing journey, thank you!!
How lovely of you to say Jake. So pleased you enjoyed this video. Very happy gardening to you, and here’s to a truly bumper harvest in 2023.
totally agree!
After a 50+ year old concrete patio was removed in late 2019, homemade compost was added after breaking up the incredibly hard ground with a pickaxe, then planted fava beans as a compost crop. In 2021 added raised beds, more compost and now the area is growing an assortment of wonderful vegetables and flowers!
What a great result - from concrete jungle to luscious jungle!
Your enthusiasm is quite catching. Love that you suggest that if a person does not have one thing that they might use something else available. Yes,plan to extend the garden next year, with a little more planning.
With the cost of living right now, I started thinking about starting a vegetable garden. Thank you for explaining basic things so clearly
We don't have space to garden, so I'm here for the calming tranquility of these wonderful videos.
I started gardening around the same age because my mom started working full time so I guess I just stepped into her garden shoes. Best hobby ever🌱
Isn't it Melissa!
Last year I got 3 small pop up raised beds and filled with bagged compost. Spent a fortune. This year I've made some simple no-dig, not-raised beds between my decking using just free cardboard, a 1000L bulk bag of manure and some woodchip between the beds. Cost the same and quadruple the growing area. Think its easy to make that mistake first time round but learned my lesson!
Sounds like you're onto a winner! Nice one. :-)
I was intimidated to start growing a garden. Watching this made me feel much better and actually inspired me to start immediately. Instantly subscribed, thank you.
Thanks so much for subscribing. Best of luck with your new garden - enjoy! :-)
You are an amazing human! This world has hope. Thank you!
That's so kind of you. Happy gardening!
You inspired me! I’m now the proud owner of four raised beds (pallet collars - what a revelation!) It makes me feel so organised, I love it. Now I’m busy planning what to plant, next job is to zap the greenhouse and get sowing. Thanks for your enthusiasm, it’s contagious.
That's a joy to hear Chris. They do give a satisfying sense of order for sure.
I am starting my first veg garden in container pots in a victorian terraced house's tiny paved backyard. I grew up with grandparents who had their own allotments and gardens full of fruit and veg and I loved helping on them as a child. For the last 20 years I have lived in flats and I am so excited to start growing my own fruit and veg finally!
Brilliant - it will be so lovely getting your hands into the dirt again! :-)
A lot of the time, I just "couldn't be arsed", but your videos encourage me to get out in my considerably small garden, two raised beds and two trees, partly shaded, very small "full sun" area. It's a challenge! 😁
Glad to have enthused you Scott - go forth and sow/plant!
Lots of good food grows in shade.😊
Thank you!
I love seeing your little assistant! 🐕🥰 I will try your tips and look into the vegetable bed plans. Thank you 🙏
You're welcome - very best of luck with your plans for this year.
Do you have to wait for the cardboard to rot before you plant.
@@sandyprince5236 No Sandy the cardboard will breakdown over time. Get planting Happy planting 😊
Hope you feel better real soon there, girl.
This video is just in time - thank you so much, Ben. I have the planks of wood waiting to be made into 3 raised beds, and the seedlings to plant in them. I can't wait, I'm so excited!
The expectation and promise! Very exciting indeed! Happy gardening.
Oh the enthusiasm of Ben... teaching us the gardening tricks!
You're very welcome. It's a joy to share the gardening journey. :-)
I bought a 2,500m2 piece of land last Monday in Costarrican rainforest and words can not say how excited and eager I was about starting my food forest and veggie garden now I found your channel today and I can't wait till it's fenced so I can get it started!!! Your enthusiasm, energy and love is contagious and I'm a new subscriber!!! Thanks for sharing with all of us!!! 💗🌱
So pleased to hear that Chester. Thanks for the sub and congratulation on your new piece of land!
You are incredibly encouraging and have all sorts of good tips... all delivered with your humble, chipper spirit. I love it! Thank you so much for making and posting these videos!
That's very kind of you to say. Happy gardening! :-)
Upon receiving my first order of beautiful heirloom seeds today, I realized how utterly clueless I was about where to even start planting them. Thank you for this wonderfully clear, encouraging, and edifying tutorial! I'm off to start my very first garden thanks to your guidance!
That’s wonderful to hear! Happy gardening! 😀
Are the seeds used here organic?
Ah that's really sweet you starting your first veg patch at the age of 10. What a lovely story😊 This year I won't be molly codling my plants like I did last year. It seems my abandoned failures do much better when I just leave them to it😂 Thank you for your enthusiasm and advice Ben!🌱
Haha - sometimes just leaving things be and not fussing over them is the best course of action Elle. Good luck with this year's plantings. :-)
I love seeing your pup she's so adorable. Dogs are the best gardening partner
They so are Lindsey! :-)
@@GrowVeg I live in a apartment but I have a decent size balcony I have tons of pots. my pug and chihuahua are always with me haha
I've should of done this year's ago in my garden. I can't wait to do this. I don't mind gardening. I do believe gardening can reduce stress. You live and learn at a age😊😊😊😊😊😊
Love your enthusiasm. Lots of good ideas. I’ll try compost and soil over cardboard directly on the ground. Thanks!
Honestly got to be the best video out there for a beginner trying to navigate how to start a kitchen garden with raised beds. Thanks so much for this!
Wow, thanks!
I've noticed that most gardeners have lots of tools for the job. Boards, netting, plants, pots, cells, potting soil, various tools, etc come etc. I'm sure most gardeners would love it if you could do a video on how you store all these things and keep them organized. I find my various tools and supplies overwhelming sometimes. You are so good at explaining that I know a video like that would be so helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will certainly add this to our list of video topic ideas.
Me and my partner recently moved from renting in to our own home and the previous owner was quite the green thumb. She left us two raised beds to utilize. We uprooted the current residents to make way for planting some vegetables and herbs. Thanks for the helpful advice, hopefully we will see a good first harvest this year! If not, there's always next time. Will take in to account of also planting some flowers to attract bees and the rest to help the veggies.
Great stuff Adam. Hope you grow something tasty to eat - I'm sure you will. :-)
Great timing! Just taking a break from the digging
This has to be my fav gardening channel ❤Looking forward to the end of winter
This will be my first year veggie planting and I plan to make some raised planters, this has been really helpful to get me started, thankyou!
That's wonderful to hear Jo. Hope it all goes well. :-)
Started my first seedlings inside, built a small little indoor greenhouse! Super excited and your videos are helping so much with the process! Thank you!
You're very welcome. Hope your seedlings are thriving. :-)
This is the best channel ever. I learned how to sow all my seeds from here. I hope to have a successful harvest on my 2nd of year growing, i will be digging instead of raised beds. Keep the effort going!!
Thanks so much Ibraheem. I hope you have a very successful growing season. :-)
This video really made my day, i just see how much joy this men has in making and maintaining his garden! Thank you for this masterpiece of a video.
What a lovely comment. Thanks so much!
Starting a Gardening club with my students at Westport Middle School in Louisville, Kentucky. Thank you for the time saving tips!
Oh wow - what a fantastic project to be doing. Hope the club starts off well - I'm sure the students will love getting started with growing! :-)
I will be starting some raised beds for a kitchen garden. I had laid the plot last year but have decided to change it a bit. I will be fencing it in as my dog loves to dig and move plants around. She thinks she has a green paw but she is not very helpful. Cute but not helpful at all. I am also planning on putting in a wildflower meadow in the back portion of the yard as well as a dwarf conifer garden in front of the house. Lots of plans in the works but only if the weather will be a bit more cooperative. I am in St. Louis, Missouri, Zone 6b.
I think I need to do the same for my dog, Rosie - she's a tad too enthusiastic with the digging! Love the idea of a wildflower meadow - that will be such a boon for the bees - top job!
I just found your channel after discussing starting our own vegetable garden with my wife. She happily agreed, but we didnt know where to start. This video surely made the task quite transparent. You sir, gained another subscriber. Thank you.
That's really rather superb! Thanks so much for the sub - and a very warm welcome to the channel!
Great video Ben. You have a lot of enthusiasm for gardening which is fantastic to see.
Cheers David, you're a gent sir!
I've just turned 28 and I'm using your technique to start plots in my grandma's garden and become more substanable living
That's really great to hear - good on you!
I so enjoyed your video. It was refreshing; you were joyful, simple materials, clear instructions & enjoyed Rosie (so cute)!
Thanks Laura. I hope you have a great gardening year. :-)
The algorithm brought me here and this content is light, heartwarming and incredibly useful. I have such a rich soil and weather here in this particular region I live in Brazil and never thought about it's potential. Really grateful for this find 🙏
So pleased you are here! Happy Gardening!
Starting a large container garden on my deck… best way to deal with deer! So appreciate all your videos.. I am cautiously optimistic! 👍
Fingers crossed for you Nancy. :-)
@@GrowVeg peas, potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic - and lots of greens and flowers all doing well so far! 👍😊
After I move in April to our smaller farm and get settled in, I'll be getting my raised garden in.
Recently bought a house with 2 large raised beds. So this will be my first attempt at growing a full veg garden. Your videos have been a huge help so far making me feel ready to start growing!
That's great to hear - enjoy the whole process. You'll be hooked on veg gardening I'm sure.
Brilliant Ben! Their is nothing like growing your own vegetables and a simple way to achieve it is an awesome addition,I am in my third year of no dig now and am trying to figure out a way to make enough compost each year to top up my beds without buying in materials.👍
Don't know where you are, but a combination of grass clippings, fallen leaves and food scraps makes great compost
@@tesstess3371 bless you ,I know , but stilll can’t make enough
@@markw5779 maybe get your neighbors leaves... or get coffee grounds from Starbucks....
I'm in the same boat Mark, and do end up buying some in. I hope to refine my composting game!
@@GrowVeg too bad we live in different continents, next year I will have a bumper crop of compost that we could trade... I know of neighbors collecting bagged leaves (we are supposed to bag our leaves in expensive compostable plastic bags).
Thank you so much for your videos. I found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm trying to start 2 small 2×3 raised beds. I've seedlings propergated and loving watching them grow ( and amazed I've not killed them ) It's meant to be our last hard frost tonight here in Ireland so fingers crossed I can get my beds made and ready tomorrow. I know it's slightly late but fingers crossed and I'm doing some later crops like Brussels winter leeks and broccoli. Happy gardening every one x
Wonderful to hear! I hope you got your beds made in time. Happy growing!
This is awesome! Its going to be my 1st time starting a garden, so i subscribed to learn more with you. Thanks
That's super to hear - a very warm welcome to you!
Hope that went well! The garden evolves as we grow, good luck for this season.
I've recently got a little garden in Bali and I'm about to start. Feeling slightly overwhelmed with it all but will just take it one step at a time!
Absolutely, just take it slowly - there’s no hurry. 😀
Howdy Ben and Rosie!🖐 Great tutorial on starting a new bed. I see Rosie was on job: breaking down sticks for compost, supervising your planting of the new crops and keeping you company.🙂 She's the cutest!😃
I grow food in containers and one raised bed. This year I'm added 3 or 4 more totes to the 11 I grow in. I also use grow bags...had abot 15...adding about 15 more this year.👩🏾🌾
That’s superb to hear that you are expanding your garden like that. Yes, Rosie is a great companion. She helps to break things down as you saw, and always is keen to lend a hand with the digging!
I'm retired so I've decided to occupy my time by starting a very small garden. I found your video extremely inciteful. Thank you for your encouragement, and wish me luck.
Very best of luck - you'll do fantastically I'm sure!
Ben and the GrowVeg team. You did it again. I have five pallet collars too but had no idea on how to prepare a raised bed. This video is the perfect motivation and guide I needed.
Yey! It’s great when we time our videos like that. So pleased it has helped you. Best of luck with your new pallet collar garden. 🌱🌼😁
Really helpful video for a novice like me, who is itching to have a veg patch. Thank you 😊
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching :-)
Good luck, time to start planning!
I've gardened every year since 2014, and have already successfully provided a couple mini CSAs. Im excited for the next year but I always need to remind myself of the basics after months of inactivity.
It's always worth reminding ourselves of the basics - me included!
Absolutely fantastic , so clear and informative, I’m going to have a go
That’s great to hear!
Thank you Ben for this video. Exactly what I needed. You explain it so well - very inspired! Love your whole channel!
T.
Thanks Turia, that's kind of you to say.
I have a good size backyard in Florida. I want to start a food garden but I'm overwhelmed. Glad I stumbled upon your video.
So pleased you did. Don't be overwhelmed - just start small and go from there. :-)
Great video and presentation! Well done 👍 Great size for a my garden. Thank you so very much. God Bless 🙏
Cheers Joseph. :-)
i've got this crazy idea of learning to grow my own vegetables and herbs in my backyard. i'm a 52 years old man, have a small paved yard and will appreciate tips on what vegetables are easier to start up with....
Great idea! For me, as beginner crops I'd recommend herbs such as parsley, oregano and rosemary. Vegetables-wise, I'd suggest lettuce, salad onions, bush/dwarf beans, potatoes in tubs, beets/beetroots, and a few zucchini/courgettes if you have room.
Thank you for your practical enthusiasm and experience, Ben. It’s great to see what can be done in real gardens, with pests, shade, pets and weed potential.
I've gardened for many years now, but finally decided to do the whole raised bed thing. It's autumn here in NW Ohio and beds will be going in so they can sit over winter. Hoping for the best and thank you so much for the videos of your own wonderful gardens. They've really inspired me to give that extra effort.
So pleased you're getting those beds in - hope it all goes well for you. :-)
Thank you! Watching this for about the 5th time and just about to fill my new raised bed! Exciting
Great work - I hope it's all gone well. :)
I’m 53 and just grew an interest this year. I live in New York so have very few months to actually garden but intend to next year. This year I planted tomatoes, green chillies, mint and spinach: that’s it.
That's a great start. :-)
Yours is one of the best videos I've seen about how to start a new garden. Makes me want to get cracking! Thank you. Happy gardening.
And happy gardening to you. :-)
Starting my very first garden and trying to soak up as much information as I can. I live in northwest Florida, USA, so it is HOT here. Trying to get pallets cut up and then till my little area. I have a long way to go 😊
Enjoy the experience!
Great stuff Rachael - how exciting to be starting your first garden! :-)
Wanting to start growing my own veg and some fruit too but it's nearly autumn and I wouldn't have a clue where to begin! I love the idea of raised beds because the soil where I live is a bit heavy! I can see me binge watching your videos 😁
Please so binge watch - hopefully there’s plenty of handy advice to discover. 😀
Excellent video! Very clearly explained, and made me feel like I could take on this project myself. Thank you!
Great to hear - Happy Gardening!
I will start my first 6 rased beds in my yard. Your experiences are so good to follow with.
The publication Fruit and Veggies 101 has great guidance when it comes to vegetable gardening
😮😆 crazy seeing this comment, I’ve literally been recommending to friends and family. Real hidden gem it is

Hope it grows well Alice. :-)
I love you! You inspire me! Got 4 raised bed, seeds started in a propagater and ordered a mini green 🏠
Sounds like you’ve got off to a really productive start already Cherrie. Happy gardening!
Love your videos. After doing other peoples gardens for ghe ladt 18 years I have finally found time to do my own. This year i have concentrated on 2 mvedgetabkr boxes. Have planted upright french beans, chard, otiental salad, french beans (climbers), runnerbeans, beetroot, cucumbers, Jack O'lantern, spaghetti squash, rocket, tomatoes. Excited to see what happens. Will be picking through your past videos for inspiration, thank you so much.
Glad you're cracking on with your own garden. So much planted already!
I am beginner! Thank you!
I'm planning on starting some garden beds this year for the first time . With all kinds of vegetables. This video was very helpful, ty
Pleased to hear it Alan. :-)
Thank you SO much for this video! My little boy and I are trying to learn as much as possible in order to convert our barely-used, weed-filled "garden" over the road into our very own allotment next spring. I literally know nothing, so this is perfect for a complete beginner like myself. We look forward to learning even more :) Best wishes from me and a very excited wee Bill up here in Scotland.
That’s great to hear - what a superb project! 🌱
I hope things went well. Did you try bush beans? Or cucumber? Those are my son's favorite other than the wild berries and potatoes.
We are going all in at the deep end, moving from a very urban town house with no usable garden to a country house with 5 acres of lawn, woods, rocks and a small orchard. Being in Norway, and moving in in December, we'll not be doing a lot before spring time other than some winter sowing, but I look forward to the challenges ahead. I love these videos about no till/dig gardening, such a great way to work with nature to produce healthy organic food whilst helping the environment.
What an exciting move Ian. Definitely agree on the no-till method of gardening - so much better.
I love your videos Ben! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙂
I’m actually really encouraged by this because I have been wanting to become a better gardener, and want to expand the space that I have. I appreciate how straight forward everything is. I also enjoyed your ‘compost’ video, and feel like it’s actually doable. Lots of exciting ideas for potential fall crops and next years veggies 😊
Thanks so much, it's really lovely to have you watching. Happy gardening! :-)
First time gardener from Maryland, USA. Thank you for these wonderfully made tutorials. I have been inspired to start some seeds indoors and create 2 garden beds. I appreciate your time and effort in helping novice gardeners get a positive start to a successful experience. Thanks Ben!
That is really great to hear. Very best of luck with your new beds, I am sure they will be a success.
Very best of luck with your new beds. I am sure they will be a great success.
I'm probably being presumptuous, but we loved it as kids in the cattle shed ❤👍
Looks just wonderful and gives us hope & joy.🥰
My wife and I are looking to buy a house with a nice area for starting raised beds. I grew up on vegetables right from the garden at my parents place and I really want to continue that when we find and buy a house! This video was very helpful in giving out tips on how to get started!
Good luck in finding a house - hope you manage to secure one soon. :-)
Thank you for such helpful information! I live in Maryland in the U.S. and you’ve got going the best videos for gardening tips.
Thanks so much. It means a lot that you find this video helpful. :-)
It was so satisfying watching you Handle the dirt with your hands. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I want to have a vegetable garden of my own one day with my family
I hope you get to enjoy a vegetable garden soon. :-)
Your channel is just wonderful. I have learned an enormous amount of info to get my garden going. And for the first time, I feel like I can actually do it, because you’ve been so thorough in educating. Huge thanks and love to you!
That's really great to hear Kelly - it's really encouraging to hear that others are helped along the way by these videos. Thanks for watching. :-)
I happened across these videos 6 weeks back. I cant get enough of them. First time growing anything. I can only plant in pots as I have a shared concrete yard. I have so much to learn. Ben is brilliant at explaining everything. He is so upbeat and enthusiastic. You can't help but be the same. Thanks Ben. 😊
You're very welcome - so pleased you've stumbled across the channel - welcome! :-)
Doggie's thinking, "Huh! All that digging and he hasn't found a single bone..." 🙂
Starting my very first garden bed. This was helpful, thank you!
I've just moved into my first house that has a backyard. I used to grow all my veg in pots on my patio. Hubby and me have just cleared all the weeds away and levelled the land to put in vege beds. We've got pallets exactly like what you're using. I've been feeling a little apprehensive about putting the beds down wondering if I'll be any good at vege gardening on a bigger scale like this. I'm excited but a bit nervous too. This video couldn't have come at a better time. What a weird coincidence!
That's really great to hear. Sometimes getting started can be overcomplicated, but hopefully you're empowered by this and make a great start - I'm sure you will. :-)
i think this is the best beginner gardening video/account ever!! been looking for a channel like you and finally found you!!

Thank you this was brilliant! I loved every moment of the show will be watching many more from you!
This was a motivating video! I can’t wait til our ground thaws! Again, Rosie makes a fabulous appearance.
