Excellent video Nige!!!!!! Seeing and hearing those twin 2stroke deltic diesels again and for me the best looking and most imposing engine ever just exuding raw power!!!!!! no small wonder they were the most powerful on the planet when first built
Nothing beats the sound of a Deltic. The experience begins when the loco is still miles away. The mournful cry is heard across the distance, gradually rising to that glorious Napier Deltic howl. Those twin plumes of heat shimmer and smoke giving a visual sign that all 36 cylinders are on full song. Then the moment arrives and the smooth harmonics drop in note as the Doppler effect let’s us know the Deltic has reached our point of reference. Gradually, after the rake of Mark2 D’s has passed by, the smooth thrum of those two magnificent engines gradually recedes into the distance, leaving just the sounds of the Curlews and the feint aroma of two-stroke diesel smoke hanging in the still, evening air.
Thanks Kevin, the ultimate diesel loco in my book with that distinctive Napier sound what’s not to like, built from a time when we built great locos, cheers 👍
Very nice despite the murky weather. I was listening to the SRPS 37 today with the GBRF excursion to Kyle of Lochalsh, nothing beats the sound of an English Electric.
Thanks Derek, luckily the rain had stopped in time at Shap Wells but the light didn’t improve, some of the best diesels for sound without doubt, cheers 👍
This movie thrills me as if I was awaiting this very special loco myself. The first shot builds up tension. That yellow patch in the distance... sounds like Deltic...minutes later, after a brilliant long lens hunt for this rare prey, she roars by in a drama for eyes and ears. Thank you sir for showing me what "Deltic" is all about.
Hi Nige, fantastic footage with great planning. Gotta give the engineers a big shout also, who have brought her back from the dead. I work in a warehouse right next to the WCML and am gutted I missed her!
Thanks for watching and your kind comment Harvey, yes they’ve done a great job getting her back on the mainline, that’s a shame but there’ll be another time for you I’m sure, cheers 👍
Oh that's beautiful just got back in from afters and this is just perfect. No news no harry and meg no politics just a beautiful deltic giving it the lot past scout green, fabulous.
Wont be long till she is looking good and proper. By that I mean Dirty and oil stained all by her nameplate. RHTT fir a week, then it will have that 70s look . Brilliant machine . Much better than 022. 😁😁😎👍👍
Brilliant engine design, brilliant look, brilliant sound. Smooth, raw power, easily capable of 100 mph. Bring back the Deltics on long haul trains, you know it makes sense.
Thanks Steve, put a great performance today so I presume the test went to plan and looked good with the ex Riviera rake, had noticed white van man 😂 cheers 👍
In the other vids I've seen today and yesterday, there is exhaust from both, but one port (usually what would be the left side) seems to have a heavier amount of clag and so tends to dominate what is visible.
Looking great in Blue Nige, wonderful sound from the deltic, i was filming just below you but mist the return run as it was very early cheers Steve . 👍🎥🤔
Not sure why ❓. But there's a mystic about the Deltic. As a 13 year old it was like Christmas to "cop" a Deltic (especially living in Cheshire) Is it the sound, the symmetry or the bullbos nose. Awesome footage, thank you
Brilliant lovely video nige well done i cannot believe how good you get your camera to sit on a tripod and keep it steady and then move the camera along with the train also please can you tell me which diesel locomotive is going to fort William with black 5' 44871 and 45407 tomorrow please reply quickly bye for now Philip
Thanks Philip, as far as we know it will be a class 37 but don’t know what number unfortunately I won’t be going out for it as it leaves Carnforth at 03:26 am, cheers👍
Why not take the time to spec electronic engine management for this motor? It's really simple. Pull the components from a current loco and set the EMU accordingly although you might need to code for 2 extra cylinders. That way it'll run cleaner under power but it'll do much better on light duty and cold starts, less damage to the motor, and please put intake heater grids or oil heaters on there, most wear is on cold starts and stop start stuff...
Such a powerful, impressive display, thanks for another wonderful video.
Thanks for your lovely comments Earle, glad you enjoyed watching, cheers 👍
That. Is a thing of beauty
Isn’t she just, thanks for watching, cheers 👍
Excellent material, expertly shot, the very long pan at the beginning of the sequence is remarkable, bravo!

Thanks Richard, yes the ultimate diesel I would say, cheers 👍
Excellent video Nige!!!!!!
Seeing and hearing those twin 2stroke deltic diesels again and for me the best looking and most imposing engine ever just exuding raw power!!!!!!
no small wonder they were the most powerful on the planet when first built
Thanks Jonathan, I can only agree with you on that and having traveled behind them occasionally in the seventies they were the best, cheers 👍

Best panning I’ve seen in years!
Thanks jake for your very kind comment as it’s very much appreciated, cheers 👍
How great was that … Excellent!
Thanks Nick for your kind comment, cheers 👍
Was she running on both engines? Exhaust only appeared to be coming from one port, but I doubt she’d have been as quick as that with only 1650bhp.
In the other vids I've seen today and yesterday, there is exhaust from both, but one port (usually what would be the left side) seems to have a heavier amount of clag and so tends to dominate what is visible.
Thanks Vigsy, I think the reply below answers your question as I couldn’t be certain, cheers 👍
Everyone loves a Deltic!
